Ryan Latullippe misrepresented himself as licensed & insured. His license number 2705112004 is for a Class C contractor and expired 12/31/2010 (http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/LicenseLookup/). He showed up to work around 10:30, spent the majority of his time texting on his phone, and his work needed constant monitoring for quality with lots of do-overs even after he was given specific instructions on what we wanted. We told ourselves that tile was supposedly his forte and things would be alright when we reached that point in the project. Again, his confidence exceeded his ability. Tile was installed unevenly with inconsistent thickness of grout lines. We had to buy extra materials as he was wasteful with what we supplied and disrespectful of our home while he worked leaving a mess for us to clean up daily. Our project which was projected to take approximately 3 weeks began June 4, 2012 and is still not completed as of July 15. Within 3 days of projected completion, I again asked Ryan for a contract so we would have something in writing to hold him responsible for any problems. He balked and made more excuses. This prompted Internet searches which revealed an expired license and a website with his claim to be a "custom home builder" (http://www.buildzoom.com/contractor/ryan-latulippe). Ryan was asked to leave and we are still finding structural problems with his work. He had installed plumbing (again no license) and we now have water damage on the first floor ceiling from the 'flood test" of the shower pan which was performed by a licensed plumber. Our mistake was trusting his word that he was a professional and not insisting on a detailed, signed contract with license verification before any work began. We were duped into believing his excuses for doing things a certain way and about delays with the contract due to computer issues, wife out of town, etc. We only had his written estimate which was vague except for the payment plan. He received almost 75% of the total payment which we now plan to pursue in small claims court if he does not choose to refund of his own accord. He will not be allowed back in our home to even attempt any repair. We are now searching for a licensed/insured contractor who is willing to take on this project and some are telling us they will not touch it. After our experience with Ryan Latulippe of Floored Again Inc, we subscribed to Angie's List and found a disturbing, very similar story from another homeowner who was abused by Ryan.
Description of Work: Small master bath renovation on the second floor to remove the existing door and replace with a pocket door, build a 3 x 5 custom tile corner shower with two knee walls topped with granite sills, a granite corner seat, 2 shelves, a soap/razor niche, and heated marble bathroom flooring. Homeowners supplyied the tile, granite accent pieces, trim, shelves and grout. Shower was to be built with Kerdi Board walls, pan and drain. Plumbing tasks included the installation of Kohler shower system with handheld on a slide bar (supplied by homeowner) and kerdi drain.

We had a home that had ceramic style originally installed in 1992 incorrectly over luan plywood instead of cement or hardy board. The grout and tiles eventually started to come loose. The existing luan was also glued to the floor boards with liquid nails. This made the removal of the existing tile more time consuming than the contractor originally planned, but they knew ahead of time what may have been lurking. The tile we picked had a lot issues and the foreman hand-picked the tiles to be sure a correct match and we deeply appreciated this. Because the factory messed up, he promised to reimburse us for 1/2 the original price of the tile. Always get this in writing!! This reimbursement never happened. They seemed like a couple of good guys having been referred from a close friend. The owner balked when it was time to purchase the Spectra-lock grout, a special grout that is more expensive. We were adamant that they use this grout and it was in our contract. The owner called complaining about the cost and rather than argue I agreed to pay for 1/2 of the grout. After the tile was installed, (except for an area under the dishwasher in the kitchen; why bother they said, no body sees it), they realized the shoe molding was a problem. We have a custom kitchen with custom molding that has 12 arced pieces. They asked and we agreed to pay for the project accept for $500 to be paid after the shoe molding was installed. NEVER PAY ANOTHER PENNY UNTIL THE ENTIRE JOB IS COMPLETE!!! We wrote that check less $500 on 2/23/2010 and that's when the trouble began. Calls to the foreman and the owner were mostly ignored. I had to call the owner's residence and try to get messages to him through his spouse, only one that was returned. They would answer my calls if I used a strange cell phone number other than mine.. We had to hire another contractor, the same company that installed the kitchen cabinets to install the stained shoe molding. They WALKED AWAY from finishing this project. I took the owner to small claims court and the fabrications he made were astounding!! I don't how he puts his head down on a pillow and sleeps at night!! Anyway, the judge felt I didn't prove my case. I should have had the cabinet company as a witness but you have to pay for their time as well. I would've gladly split the difference with them for the additional costs but they weren't interested. They got what they wanted out of the job and it was a tough project, perhaps too much of a project for this amateur-ish company. They could have had plenty more referrals had they been fair-minded. NOT A GOOD BUSINESS DECISION!
