Lance from Backriver came with a young assistant and flushed my coil and it's made all the difference! They were terrific!!! When I need more work done I will definitely call them back!!! I recommend Backriver A/C very highly!!!

Lance and his team did an amazing job of helping us out with our HVAC issues. He was on time and very helpful in explaining our options and the cost of each. We opted to upgrade the entire unit of our upstairs. When the unit arrived from the factory, it had an issue. Lance quickly ordered a new one and had it installed in just a few days. Amazing service at a reasonable price. I can not recommend this company enough!

While it did take a few days for the company to get to me, I respect that. Would you rather eat at an empty restaurant or wait in line at a busy one? Scott was professional and exuded technical competence. He spoke a trade language that showed money was not his prime motivator. I will not hesitate to use in the future.

The repairman responded ON A SUNDAY within a couple of hours. He diagnosed the problem just by listening to the unit and fixed the AC in less than an hour. Just outstanding.

BACKRIVER COOLING AND HEATING SAVED ME $4,400! During the recent cold snap, my house would not heat above 62 degrees and the furnace ran constantly. I have a dual fuel heat pump system with AC and gas heat back-up. When the temperature drops below a set point, my auxiliary gas heat turns on. My normal service provider was bought out by Miller's Heating and Cooling so I called them for service. After examining my system, the Miller's tech told me that my gas furnace was working but that my heat pump control panel and compressor were dead. With replacement of those two parts at $4,500, the Miller's tech recommended a new AC unit for $4,400. I decided to get a second opinion and called Backriver Cooling and Heating based on Angie's List reviews. The owner examined my system (with no background on Miller's assessment from me) and found the problem. A circuit board had been installed upside down so the compressor was off and faulty wiring of the auxiliary gas heat relay kept it from working at all. The compressor and control panel were working fine. The only other company that has serviced my system since my original company was Miller's. The fix cost me $105 instead of the $4,400 Miller's wanted to charge me. Lance, the owner of Backriver was extremely knowledgeable, thorough, professional and friendly. I highly recommend Backriver Cooling and Heating and am so grateful their honesty and experience saved me $4,400. I will be using them in the future.

My 26 year old hydro HVAC system was leaking so I figured it was time to replace it. I had 5 proposals to convert my system to a heat pump unit. I selected Backriver due to Lance's professionalism and a very good proposal. He patiently answered all my questions before installation (and I had a whole bunch of them). The installation was completed in one day. Lance and an assistant used the garage access to the attic, even though the hallway access was right next to the air handler. Lance did not want to take a chance of dirtying up the carpet in the house. My wife was very appreciative of that. I know my system presented some difficulties like extreme corrosion but Lance and assistant were very cordial throughout the entire process. Clean-up was more than satisfactory. After the install he made sure I had all the documentation and explained what I needed to do to maintain the system. At first glance Backriver C&H may seem like a very small operation that can't possibly handle system replacements, but when you listen to Lance you can tell he has the experience to handle any cooling/heating job out there. I highly recommend Backriver C&H and would not hesitate to use them again in the future.

I met and spoke with Scott on several occasions and he proved to me that he's as honest and knowledgeable as they come, and the most helpful HVAC pro I've ever come across. His rates are also very reasonable and among the lowest compared to others in the area. I really can't say enough great things about these guys. I had an issue with my '06 heat pump tripping the breaker repeatedly, and while other contractors simply wanted to replace the compressor or entire unit, Scott wanted to do things the right way and find the root-cause before replacing expensive parts. On several occasions, he took time out of his busy schedule to talk me through (over the phone) possible repair options that I could do myself. His concerns always had the customer in mind and he saved me thousands of dollars. For that, I'll never use another HVAC contractor.

It went great! I am very pleased. Here are the highlights: 1. Backriver has responded quickly to my every request. 2. They have quickly resolved every concern I have raised. 3. I couldn't be happier. The details: Backriver replaced the compressor in my 15+ year old heat pump last July and it provided good cooling all summer. In October I noticed that the unit was not providing heat. I was worried it was the recently replaced compressor. it wasn't the compressor, the flexible return duct to the old unit had completely separated under the house. So I decided to just have the old unit replaced mostly because we plan to be selling our house soon and I thought a new unit would make it easier to sell. Due to their excellent performance in July, I did not hesitate. I called Backriver on a Friday and the new unit was installed and running by the next Thursday (see photo 1). Installation took about 8 hours and included a new pad and a wall thermostat. Additionally, Backriver repaired the separated duct and rehung it (see photo 2). They also completely sealed around the duct work (see photos 2 & 3) where it penetrates the cinder block foundation wall which the previous contractor did not do which led to rabbits and the like getting under my house in the past leading to duct damage. Backriver did a first class job at a very reasonable price. They were super responsive and very easy to talk to. Again, I couldn't be happier.

They arrived and installed the ac and we have had no issues. We got 4 bids on the replacement and theirs was the best bang for the buck, primarily because they do not have a fleet of trucks and more than one office to pay for. They are a father and son business, good people!

I was drawn to them because of their high ratings, their location near where I live and the fact that they were a successful very small business (a dad and his son). When I called I got the owner (the Dad, Scott) and he took time to speak with me and help me think through my options. I had used another company to determine that the compressor had failed and I was leaning toward buying a total replacement unit from them for about $4600. Scott offered to replace the unit for about $200 less (I did not tell him about the amount of the earlier quote, his estimate was just lower). Scott was so friendly and positive over the phone and he stated that either he or his son would do the work. I felt good knowing that I was dealing directly with Backriver's final authority (not a middle man). A man good enough at his craft to stay in business for years and successful enough to entice his adult son to continue with him in the business. So after two phone conversations with Scott, I decided to have him replace the compressor in my existing heat pump unit. As noted above, the work was done quickly, professionally, on schedule with no surprises. I couldn't be happier.

Added required coolant, dye, checked all components verified proper drainage and will follow up to check on potential leaks early next week. Price, combined with response and knowledge is best seen to date. Highly recommend to anyone needing honest, timely, HVAC troubleshooting.

It went very well,.. Lance came out, diagnosed the problem. Made a temporary fix until he could get the part in. He came back promptly and completed the job. I could not be happier.

As new home owners this has been our first cold weather using our heating system. On the coldest day it decided to stop working. We contacted them and they came out the same day. Very professional and helpful making us more aware of our heater functions and even relieving us of worries about our gas fireplace in the case we needed to use it. At that point the system seemed fine and just needed to be restarted. On the next cold night it cut out again. We contacted Lance and he came out the same day. He ran some further test and found the circuit board was faulty. He ordered it and 2 days later he was back to install. In the meantime the weather had been moderate so we had no issues. The board was actually cheaper than he had originally quoted us, and he was honest in making sure we paid the right price! The repair was done quickly and he did a great job! This company is great!

He and his associate did a great job!!! On time, went to work. I could not be happier with the installation, even added a wireless thermostat so I can keep an eye on the comfort level of my dogs while away from home. I recommend them for any work you need done.

Honest, thorough, efficient. I haven't found a better deal price wise. They do more for the money than most places.

Noticed cold air blowing from our vents. Called the owner to set up an appointment early on 1/2/15. They had a technician out to the house within 30-45 minutes of getting off the phone. Lance was very professional and diagnosed the problem quickly. He worked up a price quote and was very thorough in explaining how he came up with the final figure (break down of labor, parts, travel, he had to drive out to Ft Eustis to get the new compressor, etc). He performed the repair and was open to answer any questions we had. We have used Backriver twice now and will definitely go with them again for any future work.

. last two month cannot find problem from other heating company but finally we found the right company BACKRIVER COOLING AND HEATING LLC. Good Job and Try this company.

Those guys were phenomenal. I called them back out to have them replace my water heater about three weeks later. They were on Angie's List. Lance, the serviceman was very good.

I called on a Saturday ~12pm with a frozen evaporator coil. He asked if it had a clean air filter. It did so he said turn off the AC and let the air handler run to melt the ice and he would come by at 3pm. He did come at 3pm and cleaned the outside coil and recharged system. Very professional. It could not have worked more smoothly. I highly recommend him.

The overall experience was extremely rewarding. This company responded rapidly and provided us with repair to our heat in the same day. They did not charge us any extra fees nor did they charge us weekend rates. If you pay in cash, they also provide you with additional discounts.
