The Woodbridge, VA, office of the Chimney Doctor NOVA (Tel. 703-551-0005) promptly dispatched Mr. Uda to do the requested estimate. He came on time with ladder, flashlight, tools and experience to do the estimate the same day. He responded knowledgeably to all questions. Similar diligence was demonstrated after the company won the contract, and Mr. Uda and his team returned with appropriate tools to do the work, which required four hours the initial Sept. 11 workday and one hour four days later to apply waterproofing to repaired chimney masonry. Team members worked consistently and cleaned up well after they finished their work. We delayed reporting on the work until about two months later after we had built a fire to confirm the fireplace and chimney were drawing properly.
Description of Work: Mr. Uda led the three person Chimney Doctor NOVA team from estimate through completion of work. Estimate: Mr. Uda very ably did the initial estimate and subsequently led the team that did the work. He went on the roof to examine the condition of our chimney, including its masonry, crown and uncapped flue. Inside the house, he inspected the fireplace, its flue and damper. He also examined repair needs to loose masonry on a low retaining wall along a back patio and the replacement of several cracked or flaking bricks in the house's brick veneer. The willingness of the company to do similar masonry work beyond the chimney and to undertake it promptly at a competitive price were key considerations in awarding the contract to Chimney Doctor NOVA. Work Done: On the chimney, two team members confirmed the overall integrity of the structure. In the upper 3 masonry courses they replaced several bricks with similar bricks provided by us the home owners and replaced degraded mortar with new matching mortar. They also tuck-pointed some existing bricks, constructed a new concrete crown for the chimney masonry and affixed a stainless steel cover to the flue to keep out birds, etc. For the r etaining wall, Mr. Uda himself cleaned and relayed about 20 bricks with new mortar and drilled several weep holes in the wall to facilitate water drainage and protection of the wall. For the house's antique brick veneer, the team repaired 5-6 cracked or flaking bricks with replacements and new mortar. Four days later, the team returned to waterproof the entire chimney with a 10-year warranty for masonry repairs and a 5-year warranty for the crown replacement.

We were extremely pleased with all aspects of our recent chimney brick and mortar repair by The Chimney Doctor NOVA, Inc. Robert Uda and technician Ryan Hall were fabulous. Robert from Chimney Doctor provided us with a prompt and detailed estimate for the repair after inspecting our crumbling aging brick. His estimate turned out to be significantly less than another I received, but he had not included replacing a "liner" as had the other estimate. I called Robert to ask him about this and he explained that he did not feel it was needed in our case but wanted to re-inspect the chimney. He promptly returned to our house for a thorough repeat inspection and explained that he felt the existing liners were in good condition and did not need replacing. We were impressed by Robert's honesty and integrity in not adding unnecessary charges and providing us a budget-conscious estimate. Robert, Ryan, and crew completed the repairs exactly as promised and the results look fantastic. They left the surrounding yard area neat and clean and they were pleasant to deal with. We couldn't be happier!

Robert came out and performed a complete inspection and provided a detailed estimate. He took pictures of the problem areas and showed me before and after pictures. He was very professional and knowledgeable. They replaced only the defective hardware even though I asked if more items should be replaced since they were here. He advised me that the other hardware was in good shape and did not need to be replaced. I found his honesty refreshing considering my experience with other companies. Robert and his team came to my house on schedule and did an excellent job, and left my house spotless after they finished the job. I would definitely use The Chimney Doctor NOVA, Inc. again and recommend them.

Chimney Doctor was one of 4 chimney service providers I contacted to receive estimates to repair my chimney. Originally, I only thought that some of the exterior masonry on my chimney needed to be repaired. After having 2 estimates done by other companies, the Chimney Doctor came out. In order to fully evaluate the state of my chimney, they recommended a video inspection of the interior and performed it free of charge. The video inspection revealed many cracked clay tiles and Chimney Doctor recommended a full stainless steel reline along with the exterior masonry repair. I was pretty impressed by the fact that the Chimney Doctor took the time to fully evaluate the interior of my chimney - the 2 other companies I contacted never said anything about the interior and only wanted to to exterior repairs (and their estimates for the exterior repairs were much higher than Chimney Doctor's estimate for the exterior repairs). At the same time, I didn't feel sales pressure or anything like that from the Chimney Doctor - just an honest assessment of my chimney and recommended repairs. After getting one additional quote, I decided to go with the Chimney Doctor. They just seemed like the most thorough and professional of the companies I got quotes from, and I had the most confidence in their assessment of my chimney. I also learned a lot about chimneys in this process. Note that Chimney Doctor is one of the few companies in the area certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. There are a lot of companies out there doing chimney work without this certification. Scheduling and having the work done was a breeze. I was on the schedule for the work within a month. The reline was completed on a Friday, the exterior work on the following Monday, and the application of the waterproofing to the outside a few days after that. I just had my inspection with Fairfax County (relining a chimney requires a permit which Chimney Doctor pulled for me for an extra charge of $200 which is included in my total cost above). Of course, the reline passed inspection. An overall great experience dealing withe the Chimney Doctor. I wish all service companies were as easy and professional to deal with. I will certainly be looking to Chimney Doctor for my future chimney service needs.

I contacted the Chimney Doctor of Nova to look at my chimney after discovering that a leak was coming in through my basement from the chimney. I already had had a roofer come out to seal different leak and he told me that the crown would probably have to be replaced no later than spring 2015. Robert was my estimator and was very courteous and took time to answer my questions and explain things. As mentioned in another review, they had brought out a ladder and took their time to look over things completely. We scheduled a time for them to come out the following week. They showed up Monday to do the masonry work and accomplished it fairly quickly. They allowed it to set and dry for day. They came back out on Wednesday to do the washing and apply the sealant. I asked them about a part that they had built up on a ledge, so that the water would run off instead of sitting, since it had already cracked in a couple places and they fixed it right away, no complaints. I can't actually say whether the priciing is fair or competitive as they were the only company I contacted based on reviews but they did honor the Angies list discount. I'll follow up here only if the leak in the basement comes back; I have to wait until the next heavy rain. They do provide a 10 year warranty on the sealant. Overall I was pleased and as long as there is no leak in the future, I would use them again.

chimney repair, dryer vent cleaning

I was an idiot and forgot to tape the rods together and the brush to the end rod of the do-it-yourself vent cleaning kit I bought last year. I read and followed the instructions last year. I try to clean the vent once a year. So, I was going about the cleaning process when I realized that I had goofed when the rod with the brush didn't come out of the vent. I had a moment of panic and then thought about a remedy. I couldn't do this so I went to AL and looked up the dryer vent cleaners. I contacted one of them and they referred me to Chimney Doctor, thinking that it may be more difficult than they can handle. The appointment was made for the same week as the loss of the brush. They arrived on time, within 15 minutes of the start of the window (815).I spoke with the job boss and talked him through what happened. He gave a worst case scenario of pull the ceiling and removing the vent to get to the rod. I wasn't listening to that, it couldn't be that bad. They removed a connector and pushed the lost rod out of the vent. Once the lost rod was removed they did a proper cleaning of the vent. There must have been a lot of lint in the vent because I'm still finding some in the laundry room. They did a good job of collecting the lint and general clean up. It would have been better of they had a vacuum to clean up the residue. The entire operation was about 30 minutes. I'm happy.

Based on a recommendation, I engaged with The Chimney Doctor to fix a water leak from my chimney into a bedroom closet beneath the chimney. An estimator named Ryan Hall came and in a proposal dated 5-19-2014, it was stated that the leak in the chimney was "a result of the pipe not exceeding the crown or top foundation of the chimney. So when it rains water that hits the cap or the crown is forced into open holes around cap. The chimney crown needs to be reconstructed using crack resistant concrete and should be crowned over." The estimated amount to fix: $2,367. I did not obtain any other estimate, and approved the work to be done. On the evening of the day on which The Chimney Doctor declared the work complete, it happened to rain quite heavily. To my great disappointment, the chimney leaked just as much as before the work was done. Upon informing The Chimney Doctor, they came out and did a "water test", in which they sprayed water on the side of the chimney, and this confirmed that the water was indeed coming in the side of the chimney. The problem had been mis-diagnosed, as confirmed by The Chimney Doctor, and The Chimney Doctor then proceeded to give an estimate for an additional amount ($1,557) to fix the problem. I understand that mis-diagnosis can happen in contracting. However, this should happen in the vast minority of cases, and correcting such mis-diagnosis should be considered as the cost of doing business for a contractor. Instead, in this case, The Chimney Doctor is expecting me to bear the full burden because of their mis-diagnosis. This is not fair, and The Chimney Doctor has been inflexible in coming to a fair resolution to this problem. As the original proposal clearly identified source of problem and repairs to address it, it seems that The Chimney Doctor was either incompetent in their estimate/proposal or incompetent in performing the repairs they deemed necessary. We tried to escalate this at the Chimney Doctor and Victor (we understand is the owner) would not speak with us. Elizabeth ("Liz") relayed this message to us. We were also told that they were going to put a mechanics lien on our property. I strongly recommend not doing business with The Chimney Doctor of Northern Virginia.

We understand the frustration a customer has when additional repairs are necessary to resolve a leaking chimney. Victor, the owner, met with with the home owner personally. The manager and service technician, Ryan Hall, discussed the fact the the mortar below the area that was repaired does not show deterioration, even though water is still gaining entry. There is not any level of incompetency with either the estimate or the repairs. A considerable discount was extended to the estimate for additional repairs to attempt to resolve this problem. As customer satisfaction is paramount, it is very unfortunate when we are unable to come to an amiable solution. This does not alleviate the responsibility or the customer to pay for the work that was provided.

Chimney Doc was responsive and pleasant to deal with. The crew was unfazed by the height and pitch of our roof and completed the job easily. The appointment was set for a convenient time and they came when they said they would show up.
Description of Work: The Chimney Doc crew of 2 came to our townhone to re-attach a piece of the chimney pipe flue that had become disconnected, possibly during a chimney cleaning. We had contacted several other companies, including the one that had cleaned the chimney, who were unresponsive and cited the height of our roof and the small job as impediments to their servicing our request. To us, it was important because we were unable to have fires in our fireplace throughout the past winter (2013-14), which was extremely cold!

Services were completed in stages over three visits, a few days apart. After the work was complete, we noticed some of the final caulking was not properly finished. I sent a couple of photos to Chimney Doctor showing the areas we were concerned about. They were very quick to respond and sent a team out to redo that part of the work. We are very happy with the final result...no more water leak! Highly recommend this company.

Thank you for your allowing us the opportunity to provide service and for bringing the area that you were not pleased with to our attention. Glad to hear this has resolved the problem.
My house was built in 1984 and probably never had the chimney serviced. The mortar was falling out between the bricks and I was sure the inside needed to be cleaned. They gave me a estimate of $2,800 for those two items as well as a rebuilding the crown. They were the only company that actually brought a ladder and looked closely at the chimney from top to bottom before giving the estimate. When they came for the initial service they additionally found cracked tiles and some creosote on the inside. They said it was a fire hazard, had to be replaced, and quoted me a price of $2,000 removing the tiles and installing a new sleeve. I was a little nervous about the "up sale," but I didn't want to take any chances with the saftely issue. We use our fireplace regularly and didn't want to have to worry about any hidden damage in the future. The work to be completed was described to me as a two-separate day process. Mortar one day, water proofing another day. Both days the servicemen arrived on time, they were polite and professional. They worked quickly and neatly. The chimney looks great on the outside and should operate safely for years to come. My only complaint would be that it was a little pricey. The two quotes I received were vastly different, but I choose the Chimney Doctor because I felt they were going to do the best job. I think it was worth the extra cost. Only time will tell. There is a 10 year warranty with the work and lifetime with the chimney sleeve. As time passes, I hope I don't find out that I was taken advantage of, but the day after service I don't think that will be the case. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Text from estimate: Grind out the entire chimney and shoulders and tuckpoint, matching mortar as close as possible. 10 Year Warranty. Remove cracked/deteriorated cement crown. Relay mason crown using concrete. 5 year warranty. Replace top section of terra-cotta clay tile. Apply Chimney Saver water repellant to entire exterior of chimney. 10 year warranty. Seal roof to chimney flashing Sweep/inspect masonry fireplace flue and chimney. Cleaning/inspection of fireplace flue revealed cracked terra-cotta flue tiles. The fireplace is unsafe for use in the current condition. Remove existing terra-cotta tiles to install an 11"x20' UL listed stainless steel liner. Cut a hole in the back of the chimney to seal the liner to the smoke chamber and insulate the liner with Premier Mix insulation. Discounted estimate Stainless steel liner installed with a Lifetime Warranty.

Ryan and one other came out last summer to clean my wood stove pipe. I called them based on Angie's list reviews. They did a great job and made some recommendations for this summer which I will have them take care of next month. It was $125 after the Angie's list discount for the job. We were happy with whatever they did. The only thing was whenever we initially called to get a quote, we were told one thing and then whenever they came out and they looked at our chimney cap, they said they can't fix this kind; this kind you have to have welded in order to get it back on and we don't do that. Instead, you're going to need to buy this other one.

I asked three vendors for quotes. Of the three, only Ryan of Chimney Doctors NOVA took the time and made the effort to put up a ladder and climb onto the roof to look at the chimney problems close up. The other two made similar diagnoses and recommendations without going up on the roof. However, Ryan discovered that the seal on the chimney flashing had broken open and this could only be seen by going up on the roof. Anyone working on the chimney would have noticed this eventually, but Ryan's initial inspection on the roof reassured me that I was dealing with a very thorough and professional group that is not inclined to cut corners. The three-man work team was punctual and polite. They put down numerous drop clothes on my patio and the lawn outside to prevent cement and mortar messes. Clean up afterwards was excellent. They also gave me a price reduction because it was a period of slow work due to snow and bad weather. I was very pleased from beginning to end.

They gave us a deal to use them within a month but because the weather was so bad, they had to reschedule a few times. This was fine since they still honored the discount they originally gave us. All went fine and they were very good about explaining what work they did. They did us a favor and removed the old unused antenna (perhaps it was stuck on to the chimney). I only wish they also put it out for bulk trash for us (not a big deal but would have been a nice extra). Overall good experience and friendly workmen!

In the first appointment Chimney Doctor personnel did the majority of the rebuilding and repair. This was followed by several appointments that had to be rescheduled due to weather. The office was right on top of the schedule and all the work was completed. The quality is excellent and the chimney functions better than it ever has. We are particularly pleased with the flu which stopped the cold air leaks when the furnace is working. Great work Chimney Doctor.
Description of Work: Ryan Hall of The Chimney Doctor of NOVA inspected a chimney that had not been used in several years. We wished to return the chimney to service. The chimney crown, shoulders, flu, and lining needed to be repaired or replaced. The exterior bricking needed to be repair and the exterior sealed.
