Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps

I thought the people who came were very professional, and I think they did a reasonable job. I have no idea if their price was competitive because I wasn’t able to shop around. That being said, I do think what they charge for a chimney sweep is fair.

Excellent communication, both by the office staff and the individuals sent to perfom the cleaning. The workers were prompt, tidy, and exceedingly polite.

I originally had appointment for 6 December between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. Sixppenny called to see if I wanted to move the apointment ahead one day to December 5th during the same hours. That was only good experience with this company. I took the time off from work to wait the four hours given to come by and inspect my chimney to see if it is safe to burn wood, 3:00 rolled around with no calls of either being on the way or running late. I called the office to find out what's going on. The young lady that answered the phone is very polite and understood my frustration. She got ahold of the tech who was supposed to do the inspection. Come to find out he had been sitting in traffic for an hour coming back from Alexandria and was about half here. WTH????? He or Sixpenny couldn't give me a courtesy call saying he was running late? She did offer to make me another appoinment but unfortunately I cannot take another four hours off of work. That would equal an entire day of worked missed if I had rescheduled. If this company actually gave a d*** about their potential customers I would have received a phone call as soon as the tech approached the traffic. I will never do business with this company again and nor will I ever refer this company to anybody I know. Maybe this company needs to find workers that acutally care about their customers!!!!!

Overall, the experience was very good. The only problem that was encountered was in the area of verbal communication. One technician appeard to not speak english at all, and the other had very broken english which made communicating a bit of a challenge but workable.

The crew arrived on time, explained what they were going to do, and did it. They answered all my questions, were very professional, and I'm very happy with the result.

I was told they would come on 11/17/2011 between 10-12. No one showed, no one called. I called them and they said the scheduler was new and did not alot enough of a time window, so I re-scheduled for 11/29/2011. I was given a 9-12 window. Again, no show, no call. I called back, it took them a little while to verify that I actually had made an appointment. Once they did, they said because of the rain they were behind in their schedule. I asked why did I not get a courtesy call. No real answer. I had rescheuled my work/meetings around TWO appointments, which they missed with no service and not even a courtesy call. Not recommended because of basic customer service/courtesy.

The two workers from Sixpenny Chimney arrived right on time, were courteous, double-checked what I wanted done, and then set to work right away. While one worker took care of cleaning out our fireplace and lower flue, the other climbed onto the roof to inspect the chimney/chimney cap from that end (as well as cleaning from that end). The work was very well done (I checked the flue myself later on), and did not take much time at all. They cleaned up extremely well. I would certainly recommend this firm to others and plan to use them for periodic maintenance.

Two individuals came out. One person went on the roof. The other cleaned the wood stove and pipes.

I discribed above: they arrived a little late, Laid out protection for the floor from door to hearth. Quickly set up the equipment. cleaned the chimney and stove efficiently, and then were on their way. I would use them again. Very good.

The service that Sixpenny provided was timely and professional. I was very pleased with the work that they provided, and will use them again in the future.

When I called SixPenney the person who answered the phone was polite. She scheduled the chimney cleaning for about a week after I called. She said she was able to have them come that soon if I scheduled for a weekday. The two people who performed the work were prompt and very polite. The whole process took a little more than an hour. They charged me $75 to change one chimney cap. That seemed steep to me, especially since I supplied the cap myself. They pointed out some cracks in the chimney liner, and places where mortar was missing on the chimney between the bricks. They said I needed a new liner, and needed to replace the mortar. I declined to have them do that work, feeling that I could probably do it myself, which I did the next weekend. They used something that looked like a snake to clean the chimney from inside, and ran a vacuum to suck up any debris and dust that fell down. There was not a lot of debris in the chimney, and they kept everything clean, and cleaned up all of their equipment when they were done.

I'm sure it will go fine when they get here. I was angry they put me off for a week, but I now understand that the person scheduling the 11/9/11 appointment didn't have all the information needed to schedule me so soon. So I'm happy they'll be coming on 11/14/11. I was just too hasty in my evaluation as I wanted a fire this weekend. Please cancel my last review. Thank you. Cathy Winsor

They did the work fast and a good job, the only thing is that they showed up 2 hours past the 4 hour window that they gave me.

Sixpenny came out and examined our chimney and gave us an estimate for the work. They called to confirm their appointment and prior to arriving and did superb work. This chimney was in bad shape and more than likely never serviced before. It was amazing to see what the debris stuck behind the damper. They maintained a clean work area throughout the job and this wasn't easy as the sticks, leaves and dirt were removed but this was no problem for this company. They cleaned the glass on the front of the fireplace screen and were superb! This company is great and a must hire!

The two technicians from Sixpenny arrived on time and were very professional and courteous. They came in and set up drop clothes to protect my carpets and the area where they were working and setting tools down. They did a cursory inspection of the unit before cleaning noting it had some significant build up and then cleaned the chimney very well. During the inspection, they noted that a piece of the firebox was missing. The lead technician showed me the information on the fireplace so I could order a replacement part. During further inspection, he found that the piece in question had been unbolted and knocked underneath the firebox by the previous owners. He promptly removed the front plate of the fireplace, pulled out the piece, inspected and reinstalled it. I would recommend this team to anyone needing chimney services. They are prompt, professional, and quick. The technicians worked conscientiously with a goal of doing a good job.

I got an excellent job! The price was well worth it! I now know that if I have the same problem, I can call Sixpenny and they will come and fix it. We just had two inches of rain and NO leaks. Even the owner came out and worked on the job. I will have them inspect the chimney every year and highly recommend them to my friends and neighbors.

The two gentlemen who came to clean the chimney were very polite and respectful of my home. They were very willing to show me the reasons repairs were needed. I gave them a "C" for professionalism because only one of the men spoke English and his English was limited. In his defense, he twice made a phone call to the office so someone could translate for him. After doing my own research related to the types of repairs recommended, I realized that there were several liner options and styles with different pros and cons. None of this was explained to me. They gave me a price estimate but I have no idea what type of liner they would have chosen or why they would have recommended that particular liner. I believe that in order to be effective and allow the homeowner to be fully informed and able to ask questions, at least one of the men should have been able to communicate with me. The company I ultimately hired to do the repairs noted a tile that still had a significant amount of creosote after the cleaning done by Sixpenny.

Two technicians arrived. They asked if it was ok to come early in the AM instead of the scheduled appointment time in the PM . I agreed. The tech's were polite and professional and prepared the area with drop cloths. They removed the metal chimney cap, cleaned the cap and wire brushed the chimney flue from the top and then came down and wire brushed the flue again from the fireplace up. They observed a 1/2 inch gap all around the inside front of the firebox so I requested that they repair it with cement. They also repaired a small hole in the cast iron damper. They took their time and did an excellent job. They spent about 1 hour 45 minutes to accomplish everything. A job well done.

I had called and received a voice mail and did not leave a message since the voice mail did not indicate a company, just a first name of the voice mail owner and thought I had the wrong number. If this happens to you do not let the abrupt voice fool you, I received a call back in just a few minutes after hanging up and set up an appointment with a gentleman from Six Penny. Just a day or two before my scheduled appointment I had to call and cancel at the last minute due to my work. I am a Police officer in DC and with the 9-11 threats my days off were canceled and my scheduled changed at the last minute, and then changed again and again!!! The female in the office I spoke with was very understanding and said she would do what she could to get me another appointment as soon as possible, due to the resent earthquake, they had a very busy schedule and after I canceled (I spoke with her more than once) my time slot may have been filled. I called her back after my schedule changed yet again and she was able to get someone in the very next day at my original time slot. I can not remember her name, but if she reads these things, THANK YOU. Two men showed up PROMPTLY !! and were very professional and kept my home clean while they did the work. I would use this company again if I ever need any repairs or the next time I have my chimney cleaned.

This experience went better than I could have hoped. Working with Sixpenny, every individual made me feel at ease. I was happy with not only the quality of work performed, but knowing the man who rebuilt my chimney is an artist. I would not hesitate to recommend this company for similar and related work. Superlatives seem inadequate to describe and heap praise on this company and its workers. Suffice it to say, I am extremely satisfied.

They called me back promptly when I wanted an estimate and gave me a good price since I was an Angie's List customer. They were supposed to arrive between 12-2 and I received a call at 1:00 letting me know they would not be there until 2:30 since I live about 1.5 hours from Washington DC. I appreciate that they called to let me know but I wish they had taken that into consideration when booking the appointment. Both of the men who performed the service were very professional and got right to work. They cleaned up any mess that was made so you couldn't even tell they were here. They showed me an area of my chimney to keep a watch on but said it didn't need to be repaired, so I appreciated the honesty. They took photos of the air ducts before and after so I could see the difference. Overall it was a positive experience and I would use them again.

They had difficulty speaking English. I had a little stain in the driveway which they attempted to clean a couple of times and they never got it out. The last time that I called them, they weren’t in town anymore. The phone was down. I don’t know if they move from one place to another, but the place in Vienna was really good. They were really good as they were always coming here, but I couldn’t get them all of a sudden. The only problem was that they didn’t give me the result which was really strange. I had no information about the cleaning and when I asked, they told me that they don’t do it. Other than that they were efficient. They came in and cleaned everything and left everything nicely, but they never told me how much they took out of the house and I was confused on why they didn’t tell me that. Even on their paper work it sates that they need to inform about how much they are going to do and the results or whatever they take out. When I called them about that, they never responded. I also called them as their tuck had leaked on my driveway and it had stained my driveway. The stain has never come out. They came and tried to do it, but they never got it out. Once they even said that they were going to come and never showed up to get it out. They never told me when they were going to come although they asked me for a window. I’m not absolutely disgusted, but I wanted them to tell me what the results were when I’ve asked for a service. Also air duct cleaning is like scamming a lot of times as it’s all over in the news and my husband suggested not getting it done unless they are reputable. It is possible for some of them to be reputable and not even tell people how much they took out. I don’t know about the quality. I just know that they have done it. They were good about cleaning the visual ones, but the ones that I can’t really see, they were really careful with that and did a nice job. I’ve used Angie’s List several times. They were very responsive and completely wonderful except that last time when everything was shut. I don’t know what happened to them. I would use them again if they correct the issue that I have and tell me how much they are going do and what the results are. They told me that they did a combined set of things and they couldn’t tell so I decided to measure within their truck when they come and when they leave.

They showed up on time with a crew of three, did all of the work quickly, and cleaned up everything when they were finished.

One of the back panels in my fireplace had a large crack and needed to be replaced. I had previously worked with SixPenny Chimney Sweeps (to sweep the chimney in the spring) and made an appointment to get an estimate. SixPenny contacted me on the morning of the appointment, approximately an hour before the appointment, to tell me that a situation had come up and that they would have to reschedule. No one was available that day. Having taken time off of work to accommodate the service window, I was not pleased and stated I would have to look elsewhere. SixPenny called me back minutes later to tell me that someone was available and would be over shortly. On-time, a very polite professional arrived to conduct the estimate. Unfortunately, he did not speak English. Thank goodness for a smartphone with Google Translate. In the end, I was satisfied with the estimate and set up an appointment to have the repair work conducted. The team arrived the day of the repair appointment on-time. They were polite, professional, and worked quickly. The team took the time to answer my questions and even showed me how the panels fit together in the fireplace. I was very pleased with the service delivered. The price matched the quoted estimate. Despite the difficulties in obtaining the estimate this time around, I would work with SixPenny again. This is my second time working with them and the overall quality of work provided has been strong on both occasions.

The price was average. They were pretty responsive and right on the money for punctuality. We agreed on the price and they came out and took over the living room for about half a day and left. I would use them again.
