Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps

Sixpenny contacted us quickly after we selected an Angie's List deal. After a brief scheduling mixup, we arranged a cleaning for a convenient time. They arrived within the given window and worked quickly, cleaning up afterwards. The cleaners were pleasant and professional. We've used them several times and will use them again.

Despite their company name, Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps does clean gutters. Right now many gutter cleaning companies are booked through May and some into mid-June. My gutters overflowed in the last storm, rain is predicted for tomorrow, and I couldn’t get my regular gutter guys. So, I was very pleased that the woman, Catherine, who answered the phone really cared about my situation. She reached out to the technicians and fit my house into their schedule today. I usually pay $100-120 for one gutter cleaning. For same-day service I didn’t mind paying a bit more, $135. Catherine called me when I was the next house to be serviced. The technician, Denny, arrived promptly, was polite and efficient. My gutters are ready for the next storm. Yay!

The technician, David, arrived on time, and the company gave me the heads-up beforehand that I had requested. He went right to work, looking at the clog in my dryer (it had stopped several days earlier and the fault code told me there was a blockage), and then setting up his ladder to do the cleaning from the vent outside. He explained the process so I knew what he would be doing, and didn't seem to mind that I watched him closely. First thing we saw was a sparrow fly out of the vent, so as he noted, we could expect a bird nest. He then proceeded to pull out about a foot of nest material (thankfully only one egg and no babies). After he got out all of the big stuff, he ran a brush all the way to the dryer. Running the dryer then pushed out all of the lint. He bagged up as much as he could and took it away, but a lot of it disintegrated on touch. He assured me it would disappear in the next rain, and I'm sure it will. I then asked him about installing a bird guard, and he told me how much it would be ($85) and showed it to me. I liked the design since it does not appear it will collect lint, like one I had in a previous house, and it was metal so it should last. I had him install it. He then wrote up the invoice and I happily paid ($125 for cleaning, $85 for vent). No hidden or extra charges, no attempts to upsell. He told me that they usually recommend cleaning every two years, but given our small household size, three should probably be fine. I will be in touch with SixPenny in spring 2022.

Professional and courteous service, no sales pressure nor gimmicks. Sweep looks great, inspection comments were thoughtful, and technician provided on the spot advice regarding deficiencies. Will be using service again in the future.

They did a great job. The dryer vent didn't appear to have a problem yet after cleaning the dryer was much more effective. They do both senior and military discounts. Would definitely use them for regular, more frequent cleanings.

Well, they didn't have the proper equipment to get to our back gutters (too high and on a steep incline) so they sent another individual out the next day to finish the job.

We hired Sixpenny because we needed an urgent cleaning done on our newly purchased house after burning one fire and they said they could be at our house within 2 days, but only provided a 4 hour time window (12pm-4pm), requiring me to take the day off of work and stay home. The day comes with gusty winds which slowed down all of their appointments that day. This would not have been a major problem in itself if the company communicated that to me proactively, but by 3pm I called to confirm we were still on the list to be cleaned. By 4pm I called and was informed that the cleaner was on his way, at 4:30 I called again was told he was still on his way but no known estimated arrival time. Finally arrived shortly after 5pm, rushed through the cleaning as quick as he could, wasn't really able to answer any questions about how to reduce the fireplace smell in the house, from the concrete slab or from the hardwood floors and left in less than an hour. I understand he had a long day and was slowed by the weather, but the lack of proactive communication to keep us in the loop, as well as the limited knowledge either possessed or shared, is why I rated this company lower.

They never answered the phone or returned my call.

So the company answered and set an appointment very easily. The person came on the day and time agreed, started cleaning and told me that our chimney had a lot of creosote and expose briks and he recommended relining chimney, something of $3550!!! I should have discussed with him the price he charge me, it was just too much to take all the money, He should have only charge me for the inspection.

The staff member who came out to give an estimate took pictures of my chimney cap and what work would need to be done. When the work was done, it was in a timely manner and all materials were cleaned up from the work site. The technician again provided pictures so we could see the finished project.

Very good. He came when scheduled, did the job and took off. Actually came earlier than scheduled. Not exactly MR. Personality. Maybe paid a little high. But overall I was happy with the service and would use again.

On October 9, Pest Now came to my home to treat for carpenter bees. The same technician who does my annual termite and general pest control arrived. He asked me whether I heard any squirrels in my attic and the issue of the screen came up. He said by pulling the cover off the vent, I could potentially void my warranty for the squirrel abatement performed. Upon returning from out of town October 15, I called Ryan Farthing of Sixpennys and explained my situation and he told me he would have to charge me an $85 service call to put the screen back on. I’m a senior on a fixed income. I think this is so unfair when I didn’t ask for the screen to be removed in the first place and didn’t know it had any impact on my warranty with Pest Now. His technician never mentioned a new fee. I am asking for Sixpennys to come over at their convenience and reinstall the vent screen. The technician didn’t seem to have a problem doing it at all since he lived close by. I plan to keep my dryer vent serviced every year.

Very pleasant and informative experience. SixPenny Chimney visited to inspect the chimney attached to oil burning furnace and hot water heater. He looked in the chimney and took pictures with cell phone and showed to me. He also reviewed the photos I had from another vendor and gave me a competitive price for a chimney liner, as requested. The price was less than half the price that Chimney Doctor offered. Took time to explain the process of adding a liner and answer questions. Their price is much better than the other chimney companies that I have interviewed. I will likely hire them. They offer a discount to seniors I believe and a lifetime guarantee that is transferable once. Pleasant experience

I can dry clothes again and they do not smell musty.

Purchased an Angie's List deal. Waited over a week and heard nothing from vendor. I called vendor and was told there was no record of the order or the payment despite my having received confirmation/redemption code from Angie's List. I then scheduled an appointment with an arrival time of between 9 a.m. and noon. No one called at any time to confirm appointment the day before or the day of appointment. At 11:00 a.m. the day of the appointment I called vendor to confirm they were indeed coming as my husband and I had scheduled the morning off from work. I was advised tech was just finishing up another job and would be on his way. An hour and a half later at 12:30 p.m. I called to see where the tech was and was advised the vendor would check and call me back. Received call back and was told that tech had to stop at Home Depot for a filter and would arrive in twenty minutes (which would be well over an hour beyond the appointment time). I waited another half hour and called back. While the phone was ringing the tech pulled up. I went to open the door and watched from our front door as he sat and checked his phone and then proceeded to make a phone call. When he finally came to the door he was all sweetness and light and asked my husband how he was doing, My husband replied not well as we had taken the morning off work and the tech was an hour and a half late. The tech made no apology. This made me angry and I told him I did not appreciate his sitting out in the truck on the phone when he was as late as he was. He shouted "Five seconds! I was on the phone for five seconds!" (Obviously using the same way of telling time as they do when making appointments.) I said we were mad with any further delay as we had been waiting all morning and he did not apologize or even acknowledge how late he was. He replied angrily that he did not need this so I told him fine, then just go. He shouted fine, he did not need our business as he slammed out the door. I let him know I would be letting Angie's List know which I have. I was surprised to see great reviews but then the surprise was mitigated by the last review being from last year. We can only assume something has not gone well with the company in the meantime. As long as you do not mind lost orders, lack of communication and total disregard for your own schedule, these people might work just fine for you.

I was very pleased with the dryer vent cleaning. arrived on time and did a great job getting on the roof and cleaning the vent all the way down to the vent opening on the dryer machine. Carried out all the cleaning from the roof. It was fairly dirty and I could see all the stuff / lint coming out. Excellent job. The vent / ac & heating cleaning was okay but not great. Great job on the major vents and cleaning the opening by the unit. However only cleaned the top / short distance of all the other vents coming into the rooms. Will probably not use them for this work next time. Will use again for the dryer vent cleaning. Really good.

Excellent. Did the job, all the lint gone, dryer works great. Our dryer vent turns and goes out thru the front of the house from the back, no idea why they designed it that way, but it's a long mess. These guys did a great job.

Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps cleaned a very dirty dryer vent. Because the dryer had not been cleaned in a while the job took a lot of effort, but I was not charged more. The dryer immediately started working much more efficiently. I consider the work a bargain and I have the peace of mind that I don't have a dangerous build up of lint in the venting. i definitely would use this company again.

Company was prompt and reasonable. Chimney was cleaned. They gave tips on future maintenance and the condition of the chimneys. They pointed out other areas where they can provide services.
