He couldn't give an estimate but provided many useful suggestions and questions for us to ask other places. We were impressed with his honesty and advice.

Melvin was excellent. He gave me a price upfront to install the basement window and stuck to it, even after discovering it was more difficult than he originally expected. The basement window was to a 45+ year old house with a metal encasement. I then had him trim the bottom of an interior door that did not open/close properly. He fixed my front door just because I think it was bothering him, and then I had him return later in the week to flip the swing of an interior door. All of his prices were upfront and I believe to be reasonable. He was punctual, he cleaned up after himself and his work was very neat. I definitely plan on calling him for future work.

Melvin had installed 2 ceiling fans a couple weeks before, $300 per fan. My husband and I then decided to add another one so we can have one in each bedroom. Melvin was on time, professional, and did a great job. We will definitely call on him for future projects.

We were disappointed because he told us he'd give us an estimate for some work and he never did. We had wanted an estimate on a bathroom fan installation and some repairs. They left a bad taste in my mouth. He had previously been out to give us an estimate on another job and the job went to someone else. So he said when he came out this time that he didn't want to deal with us again because he didn't get the earlier job. So he just left. He shouldn't treat customers like that. He wasted our time coming over. He could have known that before he spent 40 minutes. It was rude and not expected. It was unbecoming a contractor, especially someone who advertises his services widely like that.

My Mom has used Melvin several times. Now after meeting him, I'm a bit concerned. He came over to give me an estimate on painting the entire interior of my house. He said he would have to "get some guys together" to help. I said that was fine as long as they knew how to paint and did a good job. At that point, he said he didn't want to work for me because I didn't trust him. He copped a total attitude. It looks like I'm not the first person to give this same review. Just a word of caution for you, that Melvin doesn't like you to ask too many questions.

Melvin did an excellent job. He charged us only for the labor and went with us to Lowe's to help us buy the toilet, vinyl flooring, vanity, sink and faucet. He was able to advise us on good quality but not expensive items. (We are on a budget) He also bought some of the small materials himself which were included in his labor. He was knowledgeable and could explain to both my husband and myself the work that needed to be done and the problems that were being encountered, which he knew how to solve. He was professional and prompt. Our powder room bathroom looks fantastic now.I highly recommend his services.

Called a few days before the appointment to review the items I agreed to purchase and have available for the job. On the day of appointment, called to say he was on the way. Arrived on time and ready to work. Sit down and reviewed the work to be done and asked if I had any questions about what would take place. Gave me an approximate timeframe in which the job would be complete. The quality of the job was superb and extremely professional team. I got the outcome expected and the job was completed in the timeframe estimated. Great guy! Quality work! Dependable! Gwen

The work went very smoothly. He worked by himself and worked continuously. Very happy with the work.

The contractor returned my call at 1:30pm. From the time he began work at 3:30pm until the work was done at 6:00pm Melvin and his helper worked like busy beavers. They cut out all the damaged wood and replaced it and caulked the joints. On a scale of 1 to 10 I?d give the quality of work about a 7 or 8. The total cost of the labor was $230. I collected all the lumber for the project myself and that totaled up to $50. I am very pleased with the outcome on such a short notice. Out of 12 contractors I left messages for, Melvin was the only one who called back during the same day. If you're in a pinch like I was, Melvin is your guy!

Everythng was done promptly. The work was excellent. Melvin has a great attitude. He explains what he will do; gives the price that is fair; and works hard. He is a perfectionist. The garage was a disaster. He scrubbed the floor; removed items from the walls; and painted the walls and ceiling. Excelllent jpb. He performed the other tasks as described with the same efficiency. This is the second time I have used Melvin's services. The last time Melvin replaced gutters; painted, cut down a tree; cleared shrubbery. I rate him an A+. He can do any handyman task with skill.

We had been having recurring problems with doors to our to deck and patio not closing tightly. We had another service provider work on them, but only made it worse. Melvin expertly fixed the problems, completely eliminating the gap created by the previous provider. He clearly explained the problems and how he would fix them. Based on his recommendation we had him completely replace one of the deadbolt locks rather than live with the recurring failures. He also replaced the weather stripping for our front door. He was highly professional throughout and we would highly recommend his service to others.

They configured the vents and made sure everything was okay with that. He was excellent and punctual. He returned my call right away to schedule. He showed up exactly when he promised. He was very conscientious in doing the work. He did excellent work.

My husband and I have used Melvin's service on numerous occasions in the past 2 years and have always been happy with his work. He has done extensive electrical work, wallpaper removal, drywall repair, siding work, and other misc work for us. He is always on time, very professional and charges fair prices. I will continue to use him in the future. He was scheduled to do this work today, Friday 5/16/14. He called me on 5/15/14 and asked to do the work a day early since it was supposed to rain, which it did!!. He takes good care of his customers.

We had Melvin come out to give us an estimate on remodeling 3 bathrooms. He showed up on time for the estimate and told us that he was going on vacation so wouldn't be able to get back to us with an estimate for two weeks. We said that was fine and that was the last we heard from him. Very disappointing because we really liked him.

He was there on time to give the estimate. While looking at an outdoor outlet that needed replacing, he mentioned that more than replacing the outlet may be required, and was looking a bit doubtful about it. I asked if he was able to do it and he looked at me indignantly and said, " I don't think I want to do this job" and started to walk away. I asked him why. He said "I'm licensed, insured and bonded. I said, "That's all I needed to know". He said he would get back to me with an estimate, and I haven't heard from him again. I think he has an attitude problem.

I don't write reviews. But Melvin is the *total package*. He is the exception, so I made an exception. When I looked up "handymen" in Angie's List, I was skeptical about a Mom & Pop business having 18 "straight A" reviews [the one "F" wasn't there yet, that reviewer must have been having a really really bad day, go figure]. But I called him anyway. Don't let his broken English set you off. Out of 4 quotes, Melvin was my first. He was the single most prompt, most professional, kindest, most courteous of all 4. His formal estimate was most professionally prepared. He was OK waiting for me to get other quotes. But his was 20% below his closest competitor, a good referral from a good friend. The others weren't even close. One guy was triple. Then he cooperated when I asked for a contractual completion deadline, "weather permitting" of course. He also allowed me to append, to the contract, photos of my HOA violations that he was fixing, so that there would be no misunderstanding later. Then he printed it, signed it, scanned it and got it back to me sooner than I could sign it myself. He checked the weather and worked around it to make sure he got it done on time. He and his crew were *very* courteous and gentlemanly. My wife, who stays home with my kids, felt comfortable with both him and his crew. This means a lot to me. My wife made the mistake of leaving him the check before he finished. This is NOT recommended because many a contractor would take the money and run. But not Melvin, he's honest. I asked my wife to please never do that again. We've been burned once before. When I do my job, I do it well, I do it conscientiously, and I do it courteously, professional and honest. It felt really good having Melvin on the job with my same work ethic. Melvin Hernandez is Woodbridge, VA's best kept secret when it comes to handyman repairs.

I called Melvin on Fri, 3/15/13 to provide an estimate for some handyman services. He came to my house on Sat, 3/16/13. When he arrived, I asked him where he parked and based on his response, it was in one of the reserved spaces in our townhome community. I told him to park in a visitor spot. He refused to do so saying he would only be there for 5 minutes. That was the first red flag. What estimate only takes 5 minutes? We walked through the house and I indicated what I needed to have done. When I asked how much it would cost to have my bedroom ceiling and guest bath ceilings painted, he said $300 for the bedroom ceiling and $200 for the bath. After I asked a few more questions, he said, ?Well, it doesn?t sound like you want to spend a whole lot of money, so I think I?m going to go now before I get towed.? Then, he walked out. I was thoroughly disappointed in him and would NOT recommend him to anyone. He probably thought I didn't want to spend ANY money (not true) and decided I wasn't worth his time. I have no idea how this guy got an all-A rating.

From the moment Melvin came for an estimate, early one Saturday morning just at the time he said he would be there until his last task he and Raphael, his co-worker left they were punctual, neat about their work and fantastic to work with. They arrived every morning at just the time they said, worked diligently and left at 4-4:30 each evening. Each time they left they had completed the tasks they had said they would complete for the day. During the first part of the job Melvin and Raphael picked up our bathroom cabinets and the door at Home Depot for us and delivered them to our house. During the last project they returned a purchase my husband and I had made on a damaged door and picked a new one up and installed it for us. During the course of the two weeks, Melvin checked in regularly on the weekend or an evening to be sure that the purchases we needed to make were coming along on schedule, or if we had any questions. He was quick to offer help on other items that we hadn't even asked him to do. It is all the little things that Melvin and Raphael do while they are working in your home that make a huge difference. An example of this is that some former contractors had not completed a tile job properly and he showed us where it would be a problem and we were able to have them come back to fix it in a timely fashion. Melvin takes great pride in his work and it shows. He is very reasonable and fair in his pricing and a pleasure to work with. I would never hesitate to have Melvin and Raphael come give me an estimate on any projects I planned to do in the h ome and know he would answer honestly about whether or not it was something he could do and that his estimates were right on target. I plan to have him back in a few weeks to install kitchen cabinets, strip wall paper and paint and tile a backsplash for me.

Melvin was great to work with - very professional, punctual and thorough. The entire job included finishing drywall that was already hung on both the walls and ceilings and painting them. We did baseboards and finishing work ourselves. He came across an issue during his work - part of the framing had to be extended to accomodate for new sprinklers that were installed. He explained it clearly and the final job looked great.

Melvin has fixed several problems here in my home and these projects were completed efficiently. What I like most about Melvin is his professionalism and also his since of pride in his work. He puts in the extra effort to not only make sure it works but makes sure it works properly. He goes the extra mile and when he sees issues that should be addressed, he ensures you are aware of those issues even if it were not on your list of things that needed to be fixed. As in the case of the roof while cleaning the gutters.

It went great! Melvin takes pride in his work, is punctual and gives a full day of work. He will fix things along the way if it makes things look better. My house was being prepared for sale.One of the first buyers actually bought the house. I personally believe it was in large part due to the sparkling finish to the house that Melvin helped to provide. Even if I was called out of town, he kept in touch and updated me on progress. I trusted him with access to the house. I have known Melvin for about 14 years and have always entrusted him to perform repairs and painting over the years. 4

It went well. Melvin showed up promptly to paint my front door. He removed all hardware prior to painting the door which I greatly appreciated.

Mr. Hernandes came to my house twice in March and did the following things for me: 1. Installed a pull-down attic ladder. His fit and finish were impressive. 2. Installed flooring in my attic. It was a challenge because of the number of electrical wires running over the naked joists. He had several good ideas that enhanced my instructions. .3. Installed a new door between a guest room and adjoining bath. By "new" I mean he had to first hammer throught a wall, frame the new space, and then install a door/frame I bought at Home Depot. Again the finished work was superior. He had to overcome a height difference between the flooring of the bedroom and that of the bathroom. He did it quite well. Even the carpet in the bedroom was cinched close to the jam and looks ad good as the rest of the room. .4. Built a work bench in the basement that is very sturdy. .For all of these projects, he had told over the phone what materials to buy, and I had them ready to go. He had with him all the power tools needed to do the work. He said he could either give me a cost estimate for the work or charge me an hourly rate from when he showed up to when he was done. Since the work was of unknown complexity and subject to change in process, we agreed on an hourly rate of $50. Mr. Hernandez worked steadly with no wasted time. Mr. Hernandez did all work in a highly professional manner.
