He was good. He came really quick with very reasonable price.

I have used Mr. Dunn every year for Dryer Vent blows and chimney inspection and cleanings if needed. He is a retired fireman and of course he knows all about fire potentials with dryer vents and fireplaces. You cannot go wrong with Mr. Melvin Dunn.

I sent a request for an appointment from their web site and received a prompt response. Mr. Dunn was on time for the appointment, did a good job and even provided a cover for the outside vent to be included in the agreed upon price. He was professional and also pleasant to interact with. I would definitely recommend him.

We asked Mr. Dunn to clean and check on water issues we were having with our two chimneys. On his first visit, he cleaned one chimney and said the other didn't need cleaning. He checked and found both our 36-year old chimneys needed new collars and lids and recommended waterproofing the brick. We agreed and the work was done promptly. The masons finished the demolition and new collars on a Friday. Mr. Dunn returned Saturday to replace the lids and do the waterproofing. It started to rain lightly and Mr. Dunn stopped work, saying the moisture would interfere with the waterproofing process, and returned Sunday to finish when it was dry. We were pleased that both the masons and Mr. Dunn covered an adjacent sky light to protect it. Mr. Dunn and his crews were capable, efficient, professional and personable. It was a pleasure doing business with them.

It is my experience that sometimes when companies get high ratings on websites like this one, they get a backlog of business and their customer service suffers. I waited weeks for this company to come to my home. It snowed lightly that morning (1" at most, with no freezing) and they canceled on the day of the service. They rescheduled the work a month later without speaking to us. I replied to their email and said the roads were not that bad. My wife had just driven into work and reported the roads were OK. Since some companies do chimney cleaning from the bottom up, I was suggesting they could still get here and do the work. I also said I might not be able to wait another month, so they should call before coming, to make sure the job was a go. They replied that they do the work from the roof, so it was unsafe. That is fine -- I get that. What bothered me was this unnecessary added comment: "He (the owner Mr. Dunn) is concerned that you let your wife go to work in the current conditions." That is an exact quote. Then they told me the follow-up appointment was now cancelled. I do not "let" my wife go to work. She makes those decisions. I don't appreciate the remark and neither did my wife. We also don't appreciate them cancelling the postponed service without bothering to speak with us. This company may do a good job at chimney cleaning, but their customer service needs a lot of work. We are going with another (much less expensive) company.

Mr. Dunn is the only professional I trust with my chimney. He promptly notifies me of any issues during cleanings and always has a reasonable approach to address any problems.

They found a birds nest in the outside vent area, and did a good job cleaning out the vent.

Absolutely wonderful. Melvin confirmed the chimneys were in fine shape despite another company's $8K inspection/repair report which seemed suspicious from the beginning. Melvin is the only one I trust. We are so lucky to have him servicing the Metro area. New customer's: don't worry if it takes a day to get a return call for an appt. Wait as it's well worth it. Can't recommend him enough. He's a godsend.

Kept to schedule. Moisture had formed inside chimney due to owner neglect (mine). Had never used fireplace since move in Oct 1986. Price was extremely competitive, Mr. Dunn and crew were very meticulous in their work, which was done in chilly and damp weather. Rather than do it all at one time, they came back a couple times in order to make sure the concrete and sealant meshed properly. Wrapped in in a plastic cover each time. Painstaking work done right. Highly recommend.

Highly recommended by my friend. Now highly recommended by me. Scheduling was simple and handled quickly. Professional service with oversight by the owner/operator Mr. Melvin Dunn. Former fire fighter who understands the importance of a safe fireplace. Added a chimney cap on this one time visit, rather than making me schedule another visit. Cost for cleaning and inspecting was more reasonable than another vendor wanted for just inspecting the fireplace.

It went perfect. I had called because I had noticed some loose grout at the crown of the Chimney. Mr. Dunn and his crew showed up within the scheduled time frame. Looked over the chimney and even checked out the flashing around the chimney and the air vent. He said it was a minor fix and took care of it right away and did not even charge me for the repair.

We were very pleased, they were punctual, friendly. They gave us an estimate for the repairs and came out the following week when we decided to have the work done. The work took about 1 1/2 hours & they took pictures of the repaired chimney.

This is our third year in a row to have Mr. Dunn clean our chimney. He has always done a great job for us.

This was the third time I hired Mr. Dunn and once again I couldn?t have been happier! First it was vent cleaning, next it was chimney repair/cap replacement and now gutter cleaning. Mr. Dunn is personable, professional, efficient, and clearly committed to delivering high quality work and outstanding customer service!! While Mr. Dunn and his team were cleaning my gutters, I inquired as to if it would be possible for Mr. Dunn to come back at a later date and apply a roof mold/mildew cleaning product that I had purchased. Mr. Dunn agreed and once again he's solved a homeowner challenge for me. This guy is really top notch!

Arrived on time. Mr Dunn was professional. He cleaned our two chimneys and provided an estimate for some additional work I wanted done. He even cleaned the gutters on the back of the house for free while he was on the roof.

Mr. Dunn arrived an hour after the arrival window I was given. Mr Dunn and his team were professional and did the required cleaning in a professional manner. They covered their shoes/removed their shoes while inside my home which I appreciated. I had purchased a new flexible aluminum dryer vent and it was installed after they had removed the original plastic dryer vent for cleaning and inspection. My understanding is that the old plastic dryer vents no longer meet safety codes.

I sent Dunn's a message thru Angie's list. It was worded very carefully and was specific in saying we wanted to know if they would let us know the cost to replace our existing dryer vent hose. I received a message back thru Angie's list that said "I would like to take a look at the hose. Please call (703) 680-3015 to set up an appointment." I called that phone number and left a message. In a return call, as an appointment was in the process of being scheduled, the person I spoke with said that "the cost to clean the vent hose would be $XXX". I said I did not want my dryer hose cleaned and explained what had transpired via Angie's List. She then told me that their company only does cleaning and does not do the work I described. I told her I was completely dissatisfied with the misleading message that I had received and said I would report this matter in a negative review on Angie's List. That is what I am doing. Other companies I contacted thru Angie's List wrote back and said they did not do this kind of work. Not so with Dunn's. Too bad they could not have been more forthright in their communications.

Mr. Dunn and his crew do an excellent job every time and are so pleasant. He always provides helpful tips, and is a delight to invite into our home each year as we get ready for winter. If there were an A+ in the menu of choices, I would select it.

I hope this review sounds like gushing because it is! I haven’t been this pleased with the services of a contractor in a very long time. At no time did I feel like Mr. Dunn and his team were rushing through the work or trying to sell me services I didn’t need. As a bonus, Mr. Dunn is very personable and professional. He is also extremely gracious to those of us homeowners who want to be “helpers”. On top of this, he is a former Fairfax County firefighter- so he knows about fire safety. Mr. Dunn arrived at my home as scheduled and after a short introduction of himself and his two helpers, took off his shoes and entered my home. I indicated that taking off shoes was not necessary, and he explained that they always take off their shoes when working in someone’s home. Mr. Dunn got right to work and it was obvious that he was an expert! One of his helpers was outside snaking my dryer vent and he and Mr. Dunn were collaboratively working to navigate the angles. I recently bought the home and was expecting that I might need some additional work. Mr. Dunn assured me that me dryer lint system was fine, just that one of the pieces was a bit wobbly. After brushing and vacuuming the system, Mr. Dunn proceeded to secure the vent properly, to eliminate the wobble, and told me that I should have no problems and that it was in good condition. Mr. Dunn’s helper then whipped out a vacuum and cleaned up the bits of dust that had come inside. Mr. Dunn next moved on to examine my gas fireplace from inside. He determined that it too was in good working condition. After mentioning that I didn’t really know how to use the gas fireplace, he generously took the time to walk me through the process and then watched as I successfully turned the fireplace on and off. While he and I were walking though the operations of the gas fireplace, one of his helpers had climbed on to the roof to examine and take pictures of the chimney. The chimney photos (which they gave me to keep) revealed a cracked and deteriorating chimney crown. Mr. Dunn explained how moisture can get in through the cracks and generate damage. He suggested that I should have the cracked crown removed, replaced with crack resistant concrete, and have the chimney waterproofed. The photos and detailed explanation were so helpful, both in educating me about my home and in my confidence in Mr. Dunn as an honest, ethical and very competent service provider. The very next day I received a (very reasonable) quote for the chimney crown repair. I will be scheduling this work shortly. I asked about what other work/services they provided and was informed that they also clean gutters. I’m delighted to say that I will be hiring Mr. Dunn and his team to clean my gutters too. It turned out that our dryer vent is plastic (which is no longer allowed under the building code) and has decayed beyond cleaning or repair. Mr. Dunn diagnosed the problem and refused to be paid since he couldn't actually clean it. (Note, that he does not do dryer vent installations, so you can trust his opinion on this).
