Description of Work: My wife an I shopped around for several months and found Culby to not necessarily have the least expensive cabinets, but a good balance of quality and price. Also, we convinced ourselves we were doing the right thing by shopping local and not buying from the big box. | |We picked them out in late June in our custom finish and style and brought the tab in the neighborhood of $4500. Due to them being custom, the lead time was 3 weeks, which wasn't a problem seeing as we did not plan on installing until late August/ early September. | |Our entire bottom floor was demolished and redone, floors refinished walls painted, etc. We were ready for the cabinets. We had not communicated with Mike, as he said if there were a problem, he would have called. So, we took no news as good news. | |First week of September, I had a close friend come to my house from Charlottesville to install my cabinets. Not only was he cutting me a sweet deal on the install, I knew he would do an immaculate job. I called Mike and told him to deliver the cabinets. He said, "OK, be there this evening." | |He called back a few hours later and told me the cabinet finish was incorrect (we ordered a dark finish, these were natural and light). He admitted to the fault and tried to sell us the wrong cabinets anyway and give us a $2000 discount. Seeing as how the floor finish, tile, countertops, and paint were already in place and matched the pending kitchen cabinets, we had to deny them and demanded the correct ones. Again, they were going to take 3 weeks to get, which ended up being 4. Additionally, the friend that came to install them was now out couple hundred $ because he took off work from home to more or less, spend two days driving for nothing. | |That was my last real communication with Mike. He would not answer my phone calls from this point on. If I called him, he wouldn't answer and would immediately call my wife and feed her some line of BS why this and that weren't done and what they were waiting on. My wife and I discussed it and she was very stern in negotiating with him, seeing as how he was scared to speak to me. He agreed to install the correct cabinets and counters for free and give a partial refund of $1000(which we never got). This was the last time she spoke to him. | |From this point on, messages were relayed through his installers (which didn't show up until October) and voicemails. Also, when his installers came, they cracked the corners of the new sheetrock, made gouges and holes in the new walls, and destroyed the paint. An entire day and a half was spent redoing everything they messed up. | |The cabinets and counter-tops are amazing. The install and customer service received were the exact opposite. Given the chance to do it over again, I would have just bought a kitchen from the big-box and hung them myself. This experience was so bad that I will never again buy a home that could potentially need work done, in fear that I may have to deal with someone like Culby Supply again. I would rather redo my kitchen in cardboard boxes retrieved from the landfill than even thinking of giving my money to him. | |
