They were great and so fast. We had storm damage in our attic that leaked through into the bedroom. Donnie was really nice and I was able to send him pictures of the damage and get an estimate the same day. He worked with us and our insurance company and gave us great advice for future issues. His whole team was really professional and polite. It made the whole process quick and easy.

I initially choose Walker and Clarke based upon the excellent reviews they received on Angie?s List. I emailed Donnie via his website and he called me back the same day. I had water damage to the ceiling of my second floor master bedroom due to a leak that occurred after ice dammed water up on the third story balcony. Donnie was leaving town on vacation but came out prior to leaving on his trip to assess the damage and put a temporary fix in place so further damage would be avoided. It was evident very quickly that Donnie knew exactly what he was doing. He was very familiar with the construction of my house. He explained how the French doors on the balcony were installed and where the likely leak culprit would be. He took the time to check my front door and another set of French doors on the lower level of my house to be sure all was well with each of those (it was). While inspecting the lower level French doors he looked around at my patio and gave me advice on how to keep my siding in good shape and avoid water damage there as well. Very nice. On the interior, Donnie and one member of his team cut out the damaged drywall and located the source of the leak (just as Donnie thought). They also checked the insulation and timber for mold. None was found. The opening in the ceiling was left open in order to allow things to dry out. Upon arriving home from vacation Donnie called and scheduled me for the next day (fast!). Donnie?s father and another team member arrived as scheduled and worked diligently until the problem was fixed. Donnie arrived a short time after his father. He makes a point to be on the job to supervise and/or perform the construction effort every step of the way. Donnie and his drywall guy/painter were able to accommodate a Saturday visit to replace and mud the drywall on the bedroom ceiling. Gabriel did a super job on the drywall work. Even my super picky father had high praises for the work. Gabriel went beyond repairing the hole in the ceiling and patched over all the nail pops I had in the room. He certainly wasn?t required to do that but I appreciated it very much. Each time the guys came and went, they left the house completely clean and took all the old material with them. The expertise these guys have gave me great confidence that I had the right people for the job. I was very impressed and happy with the quality of the work and the end result. I highly recommend Walker and Clarke and I will definitely use them again!
Description of Work: Fixed a water leak that originated from my 3rd story balcony and damaged the ceiling in my 2nd story master bedroom.
The water damaged our hardwood and made it to our basement and ruined the insulation. There was also damage to the carpet. They brought fans and humidifiers out immediately to help us dry everything out quickly. The quality of the work was great and it doesn't leak anymore. He did go above and beyond to help us get our insurance to replace the hardwood floors and other interior things. The thing I was not happy about was the cosmetic aspect of it. The caulking was extremely messy.
Description of Work: They removed our front door and installed flashing an sealed around the front door area. We had water damage to our door. They also brought industrial fans and dehumidifiers to dry out the areas.

I had a basement walkup door, frame and trim that, due to the high moisture environment of the walkup, was rotting. Hesitating to attempt repairing the door and trim myself, I requested an estimate from Walker & Clark Builders. Donnie came out the same day I called. He was very professional. He explained his expertise with doors and explained in detail how he would install a fiberglass replacement door with frame, a new threshold, and pvc trim to fix the problem and prevent moisture problems. I accepted his proposal on the spot based on his professionalism and demonstrated knowledge of doors and how to solve my problem. I provided a $800 deposit for ordering the door. Before leaving, he ordered the door and materials via smart phone for delivery to my address and courtesy copied me on the e-mail order. As soon as the order was ready for delivery he coordinated with me on a good date to install it--he installed it the same day it was delivered. They left the work site completely clean and took all the old material with them. I was very impressed and happy with the quality of his work and the end result. I am very confident I will not have any more moisture problems with the basement walkup door. I highly recommend them, and I will definitely use Walker & Clarke again!

All went well. Met requirements of inspection
Description of Work: Repaired crack in basement wall per home inspection
Donnie Walker (owner/operator) is one of the most knowledgeable carpenters I have ever met (and that includes my brother-in-law who is a home builder). He was able to identify the causes of the water damage to my townhouse (faulty construction methods) and make the needed permanent repairs in a thorough, effective, and timely manner. I contacted Walker and Clarke Builders, Inc. after researching Angie's List. I needed expert carpentry services asap because I was in the middle of replacing my siding, trim, and gutters but work had to cease when we discovered rotted wood. Unlike two other local carpentry firms, Donnie was willing to adjust his existing project schedule to come to my aid promptly. Walker and Clarke Builders, Inc. completed all repairs in just one very full day and did a superb job. Given the timing and nature of the services performed, I believe the amount I was charged was fair and reasonable. I will continue to use Walker and Clarke in the future.
Description of Work: Repaired extensive, long-term water damage to lower front of 22 year old townhouse where frame and plywood meet. Poured cement foundation. Replaced and sealed rotted sections of lower sill. Donnie Walker and the other two members of his team had to jackhammer the brick stoop where it connects to the front door to fully reveal and fix one of the problem areas.

Our large 3-lite casement w/ transom window failed and was leaking a lot of water inside. The window was warped and sinking. Donnie and crew ordered the correct window, removed the old window, reframed the entire window (including closing up gaps where snakes were living) and then replaced and trimmed out the new window in PVC. The exterior of the window looks almost identical to the way it was before, and the interior was framed out nicely (including remaking the window seat). Overall everything went very well and all problems that popped up were dealt with accordingly. The entire job took almost 2 days and they stayed until they were finished. They also took care of some wood rot on another window at my request without an additional charge. They did all the work for the original estimate. Will use them again for future projects.

Requested a quote to repair 6 rotten window sills and trim, rotten trim around a door, portions of several fascia boards, and small areas of rotten wood. The quote included replacing two windows, a door, and repair to the rotten sills / trim, etc. The quote was higher than expected - received two other quotes significantly lower. Mr Walker was very polite and engaging and spent time explaining his approach, although he charged for quotes. I paid for the quotes. That said, had all the rotten wood repairs completed for less than 1/2 the Walker Clark quote.

See the above narrative regarding the start to finish. We have been very pleased by their work and tottally recommend using them for any large or small project within their area of expertice. Our experience with Walker & Co. has been excellent and we recommend them completely.
Description of Work: During a heavy rain storm water leaked through windows on front of house on 2nd and 1st floor levels damaging the underlinning wood framing in the walls. Walker & Co responded immediately to our call for help--came to the house and diagnosed the cause of the problem after careful evaluation of all the issues. They presented a work plan and reasonable cost estimate to completely remove all the windows and replace and repair the underlinning wood frame and structures and re-install the windows after correcting the situation that caused the problem of the leaks. Donnie Walker and his team are very experienced and knowledgable regarding all phases of structual aspects of houses and commercial buildings. They work efficiently and most importantly very carefully to minimize distruption to other areas of the house during the repairs and reconstruction project.

Coming home late from work one Wednesday evening in January I was surprised and unsettled to find my front door had been forced open. Long story short, the fire dept had answered a call that morning while I was at work to address a small fire in an adjacent town home and forced entry into my town home to see if there was damage (there was not, thankfully; but my door was DOA). Unsure who to call, I surfed Angie's List after midnight once I called the Fire Captain to ask what the heck happened and whose responsibility was it to pay (me). I chose Walker & Clarke because 1) they had good ratings, and; 2) they were listed as door specialists. First thing in the morning I called them. Donnie Walker answered the call despite being on vacation with his family in Florida. I texted him photos I had taken and he determined the entire door and jamb had to be replaced (the jamb was split floor to ceiling making the door impossible to lock). He offered to send his dad that day to temporarily fix it so it could be locked. He told me he would be home Saturday and would come and check it out ASAP on a day we agreed upon. His Dad and another gentleman arrived promptly and worked several hours so that the door's deadbolt could be engaged. It was a rather involved repair. He took more pictures and exact measurements, sending them to Donnie on the spot. Mr. Walker also answered all my questions and even looked at two other doors I had questions about, calling his supply person to see if parts were available, and tightening, as best he could on the fly, a sagging basement door. He didn't charge extra for any of that. Donnie and I spoke on the phone, via text and email. He sent me one of the most detailed, transparent estimates I have ever seen. After I spoke to my insurance company and I told him to place the order, he even called me back to suggest a door with mullions sealed on the inside of the door's window rather than on top like the door being replaced (great call) and notified me the day the door arrived (about 2 weeks later). It was very cold on installation day. Donnie, his dad and another employee arrived promptly and worked all day. They had to remove the entire door and jamb. He replaced the interior trim, fixed the exterior trim better than he found it, inserted waterproofing between the foundation and the concrete step (which should have been there originally). Nothing, it seems, in my town home is standard, so they had to shave down and tweak the door to fit. He made sure everything was insulated. I offered them coffee, but they didn't take it and worked non-stop from 9:30 am to around 2:00 pm. They cleaned up inside and out. I asked Donnie about siding in the futureand he and I discussed some future projects. It was a great experience using Walker & Clarke. Finding responsible, communicative, fair companies who have pride in their work and do it more-than-right the first time are rare, so I will absolutely hang on to Walker & Clarke for future jobs and wholeheartedly recommend them to others on Angie's List.

I had them replace some doors and a year before that I had them do some insulation and drywall work and a year before that I had them build a shed for me. I had them come out and replace the doors and also they had to fix a lot of leakage around the doors so they put in some spray and work like that. They do what they say. I think that they do a good quality job. I have a lot of confidence in the work that they do but also in interacting with them. I trust them a lot. That counts for a lot.

Adjusted a back exterior door that was sticking on the threshold. Went beyond and adjusted the door to close more squarely with the frame and weatherproofed around. Adjusted our front, exterior double entry door that has not closed correctly since we bought the house. Multiple other companies have come out to look at the door. None called back - not even to price a new door. Walker and Clarke came out, suggested trying to adjust the door first. Glad we did. In about an hour Donnie had the door closing as close to perfect as any double door could. Whereas before we had a continuous stream of fresh winter air, now almost nothing even with the north wind blowing straight into the door. We saved at least $4,000 on this! Donnie also worked very quickly to minimize the labor cost. I would use this company again. I would recommend them to neighbors.

We have had water issues since purchasing our home a little over a year ago. We had a skylight fixed last year by another contractor, and a bathroom remodel and a year later, the leak came back. After having roofing company come and try to sell me a new roof because he was unable to find any issues, I contacted Walker and Clarke. Within a couple hours, Donnie had responded to my initial inquiry. He was very responsive and within a short period of time I had set up an appointment within the next few days. He arrived on time, was very professional, and seemed very knowledgable. He found the source of the leak, and fixed it within a couple hours. Won't know for certain until after a couple of rains, but from the pictures he showed me, I'm certain his fix was one that needed to be done.
Description of Work: Thought metal roof was leaking around skylight. Turned out that the skylight was not the cause of the leak, but a seam had come apart where the 2 sections of the roof connect.

Excellent contractor. I emailed him about our door after checking his website and seeing a door bottom that looked just like ours, swollen and split. He phoned me within 5 minutes to get more information and request pictures. He explained that the entire unit, not just the door would have to be replaced. He was very knowledgeable and we knew we wanted him to install our door. I sent pictures at his request and provided rough measurements. Every time we had a question, he got back to us very quickly. He was not the least expensive person and we did not buy the least expensive door. We hired him because of his expertise and responsiveness. He emailed the estimate for door and labor and we ordered the door. I had a couple of revisions to hardware and he was very patient with me! Two days after the door arrived, Donnie and his crew came, right on time, to install it. He is located in Loudon County, VA far from our home in Rockville, but he was willing to come over here for this small (for him) job. As they worked, Donnie pointed out a number of things about the construction of our house. He replaced rotten wood on the doorsill, rebuilt a much better one, and installed flashing where there had been none. He made sure everything is now leakproof. He and his crew are great and we would hire him again without hesitation.

After a very severe rain storm we noticed a small puddle of water on the flooring below the front windows of the first and second floor of our house. Further investigation indicated a softness of the window sill wood on a couple of these windows. We realized that some problem was evident..but...was it a window problem, a structural problem, a roofing problem, or something else? After calling several "window" companies we discovered that they only replace windows...they don't diagnose the origin of the underlying problem, nor do they replace woodwork that has been damaged. Likewise, roofing company's only fix roofs. We needed someone with a lot of structural experience and well versed in skills and experience with similar problems to help us . Fortunately, we researched Angie's list and selected the company that most matched the skills and experience we needed.I also valued the fact that it was a family organization with two generations of experience in all the skills area we needed. I sent them an email on Sunday which they replied to immediately and the very next day the owner Donnie Walker came to the house and carefully evaluated all the potential issues causing the problems. By the time he finished he knew exactly what the problem was and what had to be done to solve it. Because of the serious potential for damage in the event of another rain storm Donnie rescheduled his other less urgent jobs to accommodate fixing our problem the very next day.The next day he and his crew which included his Dad who began the business over 30 years ago came exactly at 8:30 am. and began the awesome project. They worked non-stop without a break for over 9 hours and when they were done everything was fixed and looking PERFECT. We have had a lot of experience with contractors and workmen. This is the 13th home we have owned in over 40 years. We have experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly of contractors but mostly the good. But I have to say Donnie Walker and his team at Walker and Clark are among the very best you will ever find. They are experts in what they do, they are courteous, clean, efficient, and thorough. The most important factor is that Donnie ( the owner) is the lead worker and supervises every aspect of what the other members of his team do. We appreciate that Walker & Clark is an organization with high standards and excellent values.
Description of Work: 1.Accurately diagnosed the cause of water leaking into front of house resulting in potential damage to walls, flooring, and framing surrounding windows. 2.Carefully removed the first and secound floor windows on front of house. Replaced the wood framing below and arround all the windows. 3.Installed a proprietary new system arround all windows to redirect rain water, condensation, etc. away from house to eliminate cause of problem. 4.Re-installed all windows back into their place. 5.Carefully caulked and sealed arround the outside of all windows. 6.Installed insulating material in wall above basement foundation that builder neglected to finish. 7.Meticulously cleaned up all the areas in and arround the house where work was performed 8.Installed new adjustable door sill on front entrance door

I called Walker and Clarke based upon their good reviews on Angieslist and based upon their reference to doing work with doors. Adjusting and installing doors is surprisingly difficult to do well, and someone who specializes in it was very welcome. In addition, Donnie, unlike most other residential door vendors we tried to get to help us, was willing to work on our HOA clubhouse, which is technically a commercial or "assembly" building. Donnie talked to me on the phone, came out to estimate, and provided his estimate the next day. W&C charge a fee to come estimate, i think it was supposed to be $65 or something like that, but if you end up accepting their contract there is no charge. He did not end up charging us for the visit to estimate, but we would have paid it had we gone with someone else. I think it was reasonable to charge this, particularly for a larger job like we had. This estimate came in several thousand lower than other bids we had. Our Board took a long time to approve the job. Donnie was contacted several months after the initial estimate, and he agreed to honor the price in the first estimate. He ordered the door for us, sent me the specs to look at before the order went in just to make sure it was correct, got it in and came out today to install. The new doors look tremendous, fit much better in the bent up frames, and are now weathertight. There were a few issues along the way which Donnie worked through himself with no extra costs or hassle. He called me over to show me the final install when he was done and we're very happy to finally have the project completed. As a general note, serving as the chair of our HOA's facilities and grounds committee has given me the opportunity to work with many contractors doing many things. I really appreciate when contractors represent themselves well, work with the customer throughout the process, and get the work right. In this case, I would recommend Donnie Walker's work to anyone who wants a job done well and right and for a good price. Particularly in the area of doors, but generally as well, it was clear that Donnie knew what he was doing, was confident and stood behind his work.
Description of Work: Donnie Walker, himself, installed two door slabs, replacing solid doors with windowed doors on our HOA clubhouse. In the process, he also installed new deadbolts, adjusted the door frames which were bent out of true by the original installers, and installed new weatherstripping on the doors, as well as reinstalling (and tightening) the handles, closer and other trim.

They arrived when they said they would, completed the work when they said they would and kept my house as clean as possible under the circumstances. They were working on a huge project and had to remove this large door/window unit and place in in the room to repair it and reinstall it. No damage to the room and kept it clean. Their skill and knowledge was evident in the way that they attacked the problem and the solution they implemented. They literally re manufactured the frame of the door and the surrounding framing while insuring that it wold be as waterproof as possible. Great job!
Description of Work: Donnie and his crew removed a three panel window/door unit to repair a leak that was ruining the ceiling of my great room. The door was located on the 4th floor roof deck making all the work difficult due to having to haul all the supplies to that level. They told me what it was going to take and they were right on with the evaluation of the problem and the solution. Turned out to be a much bigger effort than I thought, but it was all done in a timely and professional manner.

Donny Walker returned my phone call immediately, showed up promptly and presented fair and honest estimates. The porch columns were replaced with 48 hours of that call by Donny and a polite and friendly crew who showed up on time and left the premises clean. His painter showed up promptly and did good work. Donny is a veritable book of knowledge about construction, will tell you what needs to be done and what he feels doesn't need to be done. Less honest contractors would gladly do what we asked for more money in their pockets, but Donny doesn't do that. We had three other contractors give us estimates to repair our porch and he was the only one that noted all three columns were rotten, not just one, which was immediately apparent once the columns were removed. As we are getting ready to sell our home, this would have been a home inspection finding so we are grateful we won't have to deal with that when our home sells. He has an excellent cadre of subcontractors, all of whom were picked with quality of work and rates taken into consideration. Donny is a hard worker, keeps an eye on all his subs and stands by his work. We were lucky to hit him in a small window of time between large jobs. This is a local firm that has been in business for quite some time and has an excellent reputation. We plan to use him to install kitchen countertops and bathroom remodel. He will also replace carpeting.
Description of Work: replaced 3 rotted porch columns and railing and paint whole porch; powerwash exterior; replaced where needed, exterior wood and paint all wood trim and doors; repair damaged door; paint interior upstairs 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, closet; repair and paint other areas up and down as needed.

I found that Donnie Walker was on time and honest with his estimates and assessment of the work and any discoveries during the removal of the old door. He would consistently keep me abreast of anything that was out ot the norm and discuss alternatives with the resulting pros and cons. Bottom line the price was as quoted, there were no suprises, and there was no doubt about the integrity of Donnie and his staff.

Our small Bichon Frise dog had been digging her way under our wood fencing to escape during storms. Various baracades had been laid but to no avail. Walker and Clarke recommended attaching chicken wire along the entire base of the fencing and laying the wire so that it would come down off the fence and under the grass. Our grass was a mess from being dug up. The area is not huge so we decided to have Walker and Clarke resod the entire enclosed area after wiring the fence. They also built a wood threshold under the gate so that the dog could not possibly get under that area. The yard was prepared for the sod, and the entire job of attaching the wire and laying the new sod was was completed the next day. The yard looks terrific, the sod took beautifully, the wiring is invisible and works like a charm. Our dog hasn't even tried to get out since this improvement.
Description of Work: To prevent our small dog from leaving the fenced yard, Walker and Clarke installed chicken wire along the bottom of the fencing and laid new sod in the entie area.
The job went very smoothly, and was completed in a reasonable timeframe, which was always communicted to us during the job. Walker and Clarke performed a remarkable, unexpected remodeling of our master bath. The bath had a jacuzzi tub that had leaked and needed to be removed. It was our intention to simply replace the tub with a clawfoot tub. However, it required finishing the floor to match the rest of the bathroom, and the tile was not easy to find. Once we learned that the tile could not be found, it was then going to be necessary to pull up all the existing tile and replace the entire floor, which became a huge job due to the complex way the original tile had been laid. The job became a total remodeling effort because each thing that needed to be done affected another. Walker and Clarke came in and assessed the entire situation, coordinated the design modifications, advised what the priorities needed to be, and made it all happen. The subcontractors were all efficient, skilled, punctual, and pleasant. A large part of the job had to be completed when I was out of town and it all went very well. While on site Walker and Clarke also performed inspections of our fireplaces, found serious issues, and resolved them. At our request, they designed and built a beautiful brick wall behind our woodstove which then required creating new crown moulding that perfectly matches the original. The costs of the jobs were very reasonable given the complexitiy and evolution of what needed to be done.
Description of Work: Walker and Clarke designed and implemented our master bathroom remodeling job, as well as identified and resolved fireplace structural issues that included some cosmetic improvments.

To start, I emailed Donnie ... hoping I'd hear back. He responded the next day ... from out of state no les! He asked for pictures to be sent to him, which I did. He felt he could make some improvement in the door. We arranged a date for him to come to Alexandria -- a long drive for him. He arrived on time and started working. He was very diligent ... assessed the situation and made recommendations to me. Then he started to work. Three hours later he was finished and I had a door that was closing properly -- no more gaping holes to let in hot air and bugs. I had been extremely exasperated because I had tried to get the folks from whom we bought the door and had it installed to come look at it --- just to get someone to come out took 6 phone calls with the final one to the owner! Then I waited another 2 weeks for the adjuster to get back to me. By that time I was just finished with the poor customer service (that will be another review!) and went on to other options. I tried to get another company to come look at possible repairs but they only installed new doors. Then I saw Donnie's comment about adjuting poorly installed doors, and thought he might fit the ticket --- and he did. I can't say enough nice things about him. He was responsive, timely, diligent, thorough, and polite. He's a professional and I would highly recommend him if you're looking for someone to check out a door that might need adjustment.
Description of Work: Donnie adjusted and repaired a french door that had a large space between the edge of the door and the strike plate. He worked on the hinges, the threshold, the strikeplace, the handle and the sweeper on the bottom of the door and the door itself -- pretty much everything he COULD adjust he did.
