Josh was so helpful in assisting us in deciding what kind of patio we wanted. We really didnt know exactly what we wanted and his ideas were so much more than we could have imagined on our own. The circular shape is elegant and unique. All of our friends comment on it and ask for his contact information. The curved walkway and stone side paths make it THE most special place on our property. Our house isnt very grand and we spend a lot of time outside so this paver patio really "upped" the wow effect for our guests and made our home the go to place for outdoor parties. The addition of the firepit just makes it even more inviting in the fall and adds another couple of months to its usefulness. We will never move from this house with the addition of this incredible patio. It really MAKES our home a very special place. Top marks!!
Josh and Mary are a great team. Our job was difficult - a brand new driveway on a big hill. They took the time to listen to our idea and offer feasible alternatives. The job was done quickly and it looks beautiful. It is exactly what we needed.

I have to say they came when they said they were going to come. I thought the fella that came was very off-handed about the whole thing. We wanted a flagstone walkway. The first words out of his mouth were we don't do flagstone walkways. I said what do you do and he said well we pavers. So he gave me an estimate for the pavers. But he didn't ask me anything. I asked him if he wanted me to show him where we wanted the path and he said no, no I'll figure it out. That was basically the entire conversation I had with this fella. And it took three days longer to get the estimate than he had indicated. I had to call several times to remind them that I wanted an estimate. in the end he gave me a very detailed estimate. He was responsive to the extent that, he talked to me about it. So i really have no criticism. I thought it was an unusual way to do business. I mean, he came through with an estimate and I thought it was a reasonable estimate. He showed up when he said exactly when he said he was going to. The delivery of the bid was a bit slow.

Josh came out, looked at our property, listened to our desires and later sent a proposal. What we had wanted to do, steps using wooden landscape timbers, was not workable because of large tree roots. Josh proposed an alternate stone staircase, which unfortunately was out of our price range. However, I felt that Josh and Mary were very professional and great to work with. If we do revisit the idea of installing steps, we will definitely want to use Ground Effects.

The work went just fine. The workers were skilled and the owner of the company was on site during the work. The work was completed in a timely fashion and the workers made sure that all work-related debris was removed.
Description of Work: Drainage at the front of the house was improved. Foundation plants that may have been causing water leakage into the basement were removed, foundation soil was compacted, a rubber mat was spread over the top of the soil, and river rock was placed over the rubber matting. We also had a concrete walkway removed and replaced with pavers that lead up to the front porch which also was finished by the addition of a new step and the addition of pavers on top of the concrete slab flooring of the porch. Planting alongside of the new walkway were mulched.

It was a bit of a difficult patio as it was a different level from the original patio and needed to look "connected". Josh came up with a great layout that looks like the patios could have been done at the same time. The stairs and walkout were way above my expectations; his crew, who were the same crew who worked on my original patio, are very skilled. He added some nice finishing touches (like a curved stacked stone wall to connect with the space against the house). For the side walkway -- which I just expected to be stones on the ground -- he built a set of terraced steps from the driveway to the lower walkway. Josh has a great eye for design and will work with you to get what you want. Mary is great in communicating/coordinating the crew's plans, material decisions, etc. Mostly you just feel like you're dealing with honest folks and that is refreshing. I would hire them again. I love my patio!
Description of Work: Ground Effects had done a patio for me off of my deck about 10 years ago and I contacted them again to extend the patio across the rest of the house; to change the walkout from simple concrete steps to a flagstone, curved stairway; to add a patio and stacked stone wall to the front garden area; and create a walkway on the side of the house. I was happy enough with them from the last work that they were the only firm I called. Their price was more than fair.

We couldn't be happier with the finished product. The design and workmanship are exceptional, and the project was completed for exactly the quoted price. Several neighbors (and even people on the next block) have commented on how well it turned out. We really feel lucky to have worked with Josh on this because at one point the entire project seemed like it was in trouble. Originally we thought the project was going to require some tall retaining walls, so we paid a civil engineer to design everything. When we brought the designs to the county to get a construction permit, they gave us trouble that threatened to delay the construction by up to a year. Josh, who had originally been contracted to execute our engineer's plans, said he could rework the design on his own to avoid the need for a county permit (by making all retaining walls less than 2 ft tall). We were pretty stuck at that point, but Josh's drawings made sense, so we went with it. In the end, what he built was so much better than what the engineer had designed that our only regret was that we didn't have Josh design it from the start. He turned a straight staircase into an elegant, curved stairway. He lowered the height of each step from 8 in. to 6 in. for better comfort and safety. He re-graded the front lawn slightly so that the walking path could be flatter and safer. Throughout the process, he worked with our preferences but also helped us consider aspects we hadn't thought of. And most importantly, he stuck to his quoted price despite all the design changes.
Description of Work: Josh designed and built a ramp, two stairways, and a path to allow people to walk easily from the street to our front door, which is 20 ft above. This involved building 2 retaining walls and moving a third (preexisting wall), as well as installing a railing. This was a very complicated job--a couple of Class A contractors whom we asked for bids said they didn't have the skills needed to put in a bid.
Well, all we can say is everything was timely. Josh fit his work around other issues, such as, relocating propane tanks and brick repair on our home. All is done now and done well.
Description of Work: Reclaimed the perimeter of our home. It was totally overgrown and not properly landscaped for proper drainage. Josh made suggestions, repaired underground drainage tubes, waterproofed a basement wall and generally made everything look great. We have hired for monthly maintenance.

When planning the work, Ground Effects was very sure of what needed to be done and how to do it. To our delight, they executed everything with prompt professionalism. The extensive demolition was done quickly with no impact on household activities. They were experts in installing terraced walls using Anchor Highland 6and quot; block and installing the patio floor with CST Contempra driveway pavers. We were surprised what they could do with these materials. They turned steep slopes by our walk-out basement and by the garage into attractive terraced landscapes. The design and implementation upgraded the looks of the whole property. I recommend this very creative company to anyone that can use their services! They are terrific! My suggestions after all the conclusion of this project are as follows: DO: Use a small firm, like Ground Effects, with employees (craftsmen) that have worked at the firm for 10 years. DON'T: Use an inside-the-wall drain system (if you can avoid it), installed by a one-product, large firm, with a large advertising budget and lots of salesmen. These companies offer a one-size-fits-all approach to basement water issues. In our case it would not have solved the problems of the existing drainage system.
Description of Work: Our finished basement was flooded during a severe rainstorm. It was clear the water backed up in the perimeter drain outside the foundation and then went under the front and back basement walls into the basement. The carpet was ruined and the walls were damaged throughout the area. Three contractors highly rated on Angie's List recommended jack-hammering an inside-the-wall basement drain to catch the water that came under the wall, drain it to a sump pump, and pump it up and out of the basement. The system would be expensive; be very disruptive to build; would increase the cost of refinishing the basement and most of all, would not solve the problem of water flooding into the perimeter drain. We chose not build an expensive patch, but to fix what was broken,. The solution proposed by Josh Bono, owner of Ground Effects, was to solve the one or more causes of the flooding. Our problem could be a clogged perimeter drain, clogged outlet drains, or the two downspouts that emptied roof water directly into the perimeter drain. His company could do the required excavation and repairs, plus design and build replacements for the old ugly patio walls and concrete pad that had to be torn out. The work performed had five legs: (1) Analyze the cause of the flooding and propose a solution. The first leg was accomplished when Josh prepared an estimate for the total job so there was no charge for this service. (2) Dig down at the corners of the house to inspect the perimeter drain to verify it was open and fully usable--it was fully open. This required removing two cinder block walls, a concrete pad, a wooden retaining wall as well as a small flight of porch stairs. (3) Install several new outlet drains with PVC sewer pipe because testing of the original corrugated outlet drains with running water showed serious problems. The new drains were attached at each end of the house to the old, fully-functional, perimeter drain. Two more new drains were attached to each of the two downspouts that had previously dumped rainwater directly into the perimeter drain. All perimeter drains were carefully sloped to daylight. A 75-foot long swale (wide shallow ditch covered with sod to prevent erosion) was contoured into the ground above one outlet drain to carry away surface water from the patio. Another swale was contoured into the slope above the house to divert water before reaching the house. (4) Design a landscape-hardscape plan to restore the area that was torn up. In particular, Ground Effects designed and constructed two-tiered block retaining walls in the slopes on both sides of the walk-out family room plus the slope by the garage. Laurel steppers were used for stairs in both areas. A patio floor made from pavers was installed outside the family room doors to replace the crumbling concrete pad. They prepared new flower beds around the walls, slopes and walkways. (5) The “while you are here” work included a new gravel driveway to the front porch, and another 30 inch high wall to replace a steep slope by the old driveway.

The owner stopped by one for a final discussion prior to his crew starting work. We finalized the stone color, prep of the site, and removal location for the excavated dirt. On the day the work began, Josh arrived ahead of his crew for a quick final discussion with us. His crews arrived and Josh gave them the instructions for the job. The job was set to take 1.5+ days.. I left for work around noon and everyone was working hard and the job was coming along great. That evening, I returned home to a completed wall which exceeded our expectations when viewed from the garage. The fill behind the wall and final prep of the surface were the last things to be completed the next day. My wife and I went out to examine the wall closer and really liked what we saw. When we walked out our front door, we saw that the wall was not square to the house. This was hard to see from the garage side however clearly visible from the front door. We called Josh early the next morning and he came over to review the issue. Josh was an absolute professional, understood our concern and went about solving the problem. The issue dealt with a guide line I had created to give a visual example of what I had wanted and not a true line square to the house. After we agreed on what the issue was and how to address it, Josh communicated with his team and went about fixing the issue. It is times like this which issues become problems and the professionalism Josh exhibited completely calmed all concerns. His crew proceeded to make the adjustments and to our amazement, completed the job in nearly the originally planned time frame. My wife and I are extremely pleased with the end result and would highly recommend Ground Effects to anyone looking at similar work. Fantastic end result and proven professionalism which many companies could learn from.
Description of Work: Ground Effects installed a stone retaining wall in my front yard which was 2 ft above ground and about 40' long. The reason for building the retaining wall is to build up a space next to my existing driveway to allow for it to be paved as an expansion of my existing driveway. We had estimates from 4-5 different companies and went with Grounds effects for several reasons. We appreciated the owner's (Josh) professionalism as well as the time he took to explain what he would do. He spent time discussing several options for the wall. My initial intent was to build the wall with treated timbers however after our discussion with Josh, we were sold on the stone option that his company builds. After our meeting with Josh, he provided a detailed estimate. My wife and I selected Ground Effects for the job based on Angie's list reviewed, perceived quality and the professionalism demonstrated by the owner, Josh.

Overall Ground Effects exceeded our expecations in every area. Between the ideas they suggested, the timeliness, and quality of thw work we were very pleased. In several cases they provided additional perks such as turf that were not included but were left over from other jobs.
Description of Work: We requested multiple estimates from several contractors for retaining walls (4) , widening our driveway entrance, and adding a gate. Ground Effects came on time to provide an estimate and provided an estimate in a timely fashion We wound up going with a two level retaining wall (which we never thought of but is nicer than what we thought we wanted) each wall was about 3.5' feet high running about 60' with low voltage lighting. The other walls were around the driveway and entrance also with low voltage lighting. We wanted to get the driveway paved also with a concrete apron in front of the asphalt. Ground Effects listened and based on their experience provided alternatives and idea's that were welcome. We had several vehicles and trailers that had to be worked around and Ground Effects worked with us to minimize any inconvenience and respected our request not to block the garage.

We were originally looking for a poured concrete patio, due to our limited budget. But, Ground Effects had an awesome coupon available to Angie's List members which is what inspired me to call them in the first place. Josh came out for an estimate, explained the differences between concrete vs. pavers, the overall benefits, and I was prepared for a huge price tag. But when it came down to it, with the coupon, the difference was only about $1-$2 per square foot - totally worth it! We had a paver patio installed behind our house, with paver steps leading out of the sliding glass door. We also had our front walkway redone, and the concrete stoop covered in pavers. The end result is absolutely gorgeous. I can say, without hesitation, that we have the nicest patio in the neighborhood! I was a little concerned that the redone walkway might be an "overimprovement", but Josh has a great eye - it is so beautiful but understated at the same time. It just transforms the look of the front of the house! The entire project was only delayed about 2 weeks from when we initially expected it to be done - and considering we had this scheduled for the busy season, I was actually surprised it wasn't delayed longer! Josh was very up front with any delays, giving us as much notice as possible, and was very considerate of our time. His crew was fantastic - kind, non-intrusive, and very efficient. The project went a little over the initial estimate for two reasons: Josh installed a recommended 3rd step coming out of the back door for safety reasons, which he cleared with us prior to invoicing. And, we added river rock to the open area along our house to complete the look. This was our decision, but based on their recommendation, and it looks incredible.
Description of Work: Paver patio installed behind the house (Contempra pavers, 6x9, butternut with antique gray border). This included three steps leading out of the back door down to the patio. We also had the front entrance redone - pavers covered the existing concrete stoop, and the concrete sidewalk was removed and replaced by a beautiful paver path which follows a more natural curve. With the patio, Josh and his crew graded the land around the patio so that we have a natural grade coming off the edges. They installed river rocks in the open areas between the patio and the house, to give it a finished look. With the front walkway, the open area between the stoop/path and the house was re-mulched and prepped for landscaping.
