Description of Work: We recently bought our house, and it had no garage door opener. Even the door hadn't been installed correctly. Mr. Dean corrected the problem and installed the opener, which was included in the price. We were very pleased. |

I found Dean's Door Service on Angie's List and since he was local to me, I gave him a call as part of getting 3 estimates to have an old broken garage door and opener replaced. He showed up on time for the estimate, called ahead to make sure I was home and explained to me exactly what the work included and gave me some product options. I was immediately comfortable with Mr. Dean. He was my third estimate and wasn't the cheapest of the three, but I felt comfortable doing business with him because he was professional and knew his subject matter very well. The estimate was given to me on a Saturday and he told me that he would call me on Monday after checking part and supply availability to confirm the agreed upon installation date. He called Monday and confirmed, he called the morning of the installation to confirm that I was home and that I had cleaned out the garage. He showed up on time, worked efficiently and completed within his committed timeframe and did an absolutely beautiful job. This was a wonderful experience overall. Mr. Dean is thorough and professional. A+++++

We were extremely satisfied from the initial meeting, the scheduling, to the final job being completed. People are in business to make money and we understand that; with Mr. Dean, we never felt like he was trying to pay all of his monthly bills with our one job. We felt that we received a great service for a very reasonable price. We would recommend Mr. Dean to anyone in need of garage door repair or replacement.
Description of Work: Origin call was for a garage door that was not opening correctly. When Mr. Dean showed up he did a very nice job of explaining everything he was looking at, and when he found the reason for the problem he explained completely why it was happening. He immediately informed us of several options, one was to call a company that worked on the specific model of door we had, and the other was to consider replacement due to age of door. He never pushed the sale of the new door; he did educate us on the doors available and the differences between the various options. He said we would certainly save money by attempting to repair the door, but made sure we knew all options and important items to consider as we made our decision.

Do you ever wish you knew just the right guy for each job you might need to call someone, like a plumber, electrician, etc.? Well, I found "the guy" for garage doors. This is the second time I've hired him in the past three years (for different houses), and this second experience was exactly like the first time, fantastic. I had two old garage doors openers and a messed up extension spring contraption that a previous handyman (previous owner) had rigged up. Dangerous! John converted both doors to torsion spring, installed a new opener (I bought the opener b/c a model that would fit in the tight space could only be found on the internet), replaced vinyl trims on both doors, and installed an outside key pad. He spent a lot of time on the job, probably much more than he expected, because there were various unusual problems that kept coming up. Replacing the vinyl trim was difficult because the opening has an arch and the doors have protrusions. John was like a master craftsman, finding just the right spacing to make it work. Finally, after he was all done and ready to go to the next job, the safety sensor started to malfunction all of sudden. Can you imagine how frustrating it was after all that work that the garage door would not close because of something unrelated to the job? Well, being the true professional that he is, he stayed with the job until everything worked perfectly. It took him another full hour at least to diagnose the problem and fix it; and it was really a strange solution, one that I am sure nobody else would have come up with. Even now as I write this, I am so appreciative of his efforts then, because someone who didn't care as much as his customer would have made me buy a bunch of other parts to make the problem go away. Overall, John is the best garage door guy you could hire in the DC metropolitan area. He does all the work himself, and he will do the very best job for you. His price is reasonable. For a neighbor that I recommend him to, he was able to match Costco's price to do the same job.
Description of Work: The best garage door guy, no doubt about it!

I am very late on this review . Sorry John! Simply put, he's the best! John was prompt in setting up an appointment and extremely helpful in educating us in the world of garage doors. Once the doors arrived, he immediately installed them. John is a perfectionist and you don't want anyone other than him to do the job!! He goes above and beyond - even cleaning up some spotty wiring and installation done by previous person.. You have to call him. Thanks John

1. VERY Reasonable 2. Prompt on time 3. Great Communication - calling me to let me know my garage door had arrived and when did I want to schedule to have it installed. Also received a follow-up call the day before reminding me that John would be arriving the next morning to install the door and opener etc. 4. Showed up and asked me where I wanted various items installed and explained them to me after the install. 5. Instead of just using existing wood to mount the new door / track etc. he used some 2 x 10's to make the door spring assembly more secure and longer lasting. This wasn't in the quote it was part of his professional attitude and work ethic. 5. Asked me if I wanted the old door and opener - haul away was included in quote. 6. Explained the safety hazards associated with the new door and opener along with showing me the areas of concern. 7. IF YOU NEED A NEW DOOR OR OPENER OR SPRINGS REPLACED OR ANY OTHER REPAIR TO YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPENER you ONLY NEED TO CALL this gentleman - he is a PROFESSIONAL. 8. I picked him because he did a spring repair at a friends house and then I found him here on Angie's List too!! John listens to exactly what you want and asks questions, and if necessary amplifying questions too making sure you are getting what you want. Remember he does this for a living so if he makes a recommendation - it's for a reason. And making more money is NOT the reason. I would refer my entire family if they lived withing 100 miles of here... but I will definitely refer any friends that I hear of that could benefit from his expert services.
Description of Work: Replaced the entire garage door opener and door along with the inside track and a wireless outside keypad.. When he came out to give me an estimate he noticed the track was poorly installed and was a hazard. This was after he gave me the estimate and he said he would install the track included in the VERY REASONABLE quote he gave me. Initially I wanted to get a new garage door opener and the rollers & springs replaced - one spring snapped. Then when I saw some of the nice doors they offered I ordered one, still thinking that he'd to the initial work I wanted him to do and come back and do the door when it came in (special order). He said he would do that but I could save myself $300-400 dollars by waiting until the door came in because it came with new springs and rollers and I would also save myself the $$ for his labor as well. THAT IS HONESTY TO ME - he would have made more money but that wasn't his goal - he wanted to make sure I was happy I have a standard one car garage...for $1238 this is what I got installed.... 1. New garage door - Insulated Aluminum door - steel reinforced 2. New track for the garage door rollers to go up/down 3. He threw in better ball bearing rollers too since I mentioned them in the initial meeting 4. New garage door opener(1/2 HP Chamberlain Lift-master Pro) - installed on ceiling (after he removed the Craftsman relic and the crude install from before) 5. Nice new indoor switch that raises/closes door AND LOCKS our remotes if you so desire - like when you're in the house. 6. Wireless keypad to open the door installed on the outside of my garage door 7. New moulding around the top of the door assembly and along both left & right sides of garage door. 8. Three garage door openers ( I wanted two extras at $25 a piece programmed as well) 9. He offered to program my car's garage door opener capability for me but I didn't want it done - so I declined. 10. Removal of all old equipment and any trash that was generated. The garage floor was CLEANER after he was done than it was before!! .

I had shut the garage door with a metal cart in the way. It bent the tracks and knocked a roller out so the door would not close. I called a couple of places trying to find out how long it would take to replace the door I had just ruined and then I called Deans. I explained to Mrs. Dean what I had done and she said that Mr. Dean was on a job but would stop by that afternoon. She said they had some doors quickly available but he would have to come by and look at it. When Mr. Dean showed up that afternoon, I fully expected him to tell me that he would get it closed for the night and he would be back the next day with my new door. I was floored when he asked if really wanted a new door or if I wanted him to fix it as he could fix it for under $100. I had him fix the door and I also asked for a price on a new door as the one we had was old and had no insulation. Mr. Dean fixed the door , gave me the materials I asked for, and answered all my questions about garage doors. He left an estimate but there was no pressure whatsoever to buy. We ordered a beautiful new door with windows and insulation a couple of months later and made an appointment for installation. Mr. Dean came on the scheduled date and time to install the door. There was a problem with the way the previous door had originally been installed and Mr. Dean installed part of a 2 x 8 to insure that we had a good solid installation. We love the new garage door. I really enjoyed working with the Deans and it was great to find a company that didn't take advantage of a situation. I would have spent the $1200 on a new door that day if Mr. Dean had told me I had to replace it as I thought it was ruined. It would have been tough but we would have done it as we couldn't leave the garage open all night. I can't say how much my respect for Mr. Dean grew when his first words were to ask me if I really wanted a new door or if I just wanted him to fix the old one. Companies like Deans Door Service are rare, the customer really does come first. We highly recommend Deans Door Service.

What great service. I would recommend this company to anyone who needs ANY work done on garage doors and/or openers.
Description of Work: This company installed our double garage door approximately 10 years ago and we were very pleased then. On Monday, 3/19 the spring broke and the door could not be opened. I called and they were at our home by 8:00 a.m. the next morning and had the spring replaced within a couple of hours.

Absolutely great! I called from work around 8:00 am stating our double width garage door had a broken spring and the top panel out of track on one side. I was told that he would be at the house around 9:30 and it quite unusual to actually had an opening. According to my wife when talking with her on the phone several times that morning, he arrived at 9:30 and performed a good assessment of our situation. We found out that the problems we had been having from the garage door not of the best quality (which we knew already since it was the builder's "quality") or installed properly along with the lift not being the greatest or installed properly. He took care of the single broken spring by installing two springs, rehung and serviced the mediocre garage door, and serviced the lift mechanism. My wife was ecstatic about the garage door now being rather quiet going up or down. After getting home later in the day, I could see and hear why too. There was no longer the crunching or grinding that we had become accustomed to with the lift - it was significantly quieter and operating smoothly. The garage door came down smoothly (it had been stopping part way at times when coming down in the past weeks). I had greased the door tracks and lift a few years ago, but the lift always seemed to be laboring when operating. He fixed that due to the lift not being installed right when first installed. He also informed my wife that the garage door was probably not going to hold-up due to lack of quality (thinness of material, construction, installation, etc.) -- my wife and I already knew that. I had complained about the garage door quality and installation when closing on the house almost 4 years ago. We had really good insulated garage doors at our place in Colorado prior to relocating here (yeah, I know, the wrong direction). I had been thinking of replacing the garage door and lift with better units, but could not justify it at the time. He gave my wife some information on replacement garage doors should the need arise to replace the one that we have. He will be the first person to call when having to replace the garage door.

I contacted the provider via email. I noticed that a cable was frayed and asked for a rough estimate for replacement. I received a timely reply with a reasonable price. I scheduled Dean's to come out the very same day but then had to reschedule. They were courteous and accommodating. Mr. Dean came a few days later and he was on time. He showed a few minor parts that needed to be replaced and suggested other replacements that would be a good idea. He would replace the additional parts without any additional labor fee. Obviously, there is a markup in the parts, but that is usual and customary in all repairs. Knowing that all the parts were very old, I decided to upgrade to all new rollers and springs. New springs came with installation of safety cables, at no additional charge for parts or labor. When he was finished with the door, he offered to improve the way the door opener was attached, since it was not braced correctly. Again at no additional labor charge. Mr. Dean was knowledgeable, efficient, and professional. He explained exactly what needed to be done and offered suggestions without pressure. My garage door has never worked so well before. I would call Deans again and I would recommend them to a friend.

Deans Doors installed a new garage door for my townhouse in Arlington a few months ago. The company had the most competitive price by far. Mr. Deans does a great job explaining the pros and cons of the various options for doors and garage door openers. We got a higher end door that is supposed to insulate the garage better from the elements, and with the new door, the garage has been substantially cooler this summer. I appreciated his attention to detail and ability to communicate with the customer. For instance, he walked us through the installation process, explaining ways in which the old door was installed incorrectly and the correct way to install. And indeed, the installation job looks very neat and professional, and only took a few hours to complete. Overall, I was very pleased with his work and would definitely recommend to others.

Wonderfully! One of the most honest people I have ever met. The company that did the original installation of my garage doors (Stoneberger) wanted almost double the price for the repair ($260). The owner replaced the rollers, reinforcement on the door, and the part that was broken on the track, and the door has been working beautifully ever since (3 months). I have had these doors over 5 yrs and they were never as quiet and smooth as they are now. The job was also less expensive than I expected. I am very happy with Dean's Doors and would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: My garage door wasn't opening or closing properly. It was during the time of the burglaries in the Haymarket area so I wanted to have it fixed as soon as possible. Dean's Doors came out the same day I called. The owner was very professional and knowledgeable. He thoroughly inspected the door system and explained not only the problem but what was causing it. He explained that carriage type doors are often top heavy and need heavier reinforcement on the bottom half. This evens out the weight. He also explained how the installer used lesser quality rollers and recommended that they be replaced. He arrived early the next morning with all of the materials necessary to do the job. The work was done quickly and efficiently.

Description of Work: The extension spring on my garage door broke on NYE! First thing Saturday morning I called several door repair companies and found most were not open on the weekend and/or wanted to charge me a premium for weekend service. Deans was very helpful over the phone; Margo diagnised my problem (I had it wrong), told not to mess with the door and quoted me a very fair flat rate fee. Double bonus: the owner came on Sunday morning to fix it! He also fixed a few minor, potential problems for me (lube, loose brackets, etc.). Probably saved my car from some damage in the process.

John is one of the most conscientious contractors with whom I have worked with. He came over to my house for the bid, explained what needed to be done in detail, showed what he would do to improve the existing system, and gave me a very competitive bid. On the day of installation, he came on time and replaced the doors in about one day. He programmed 3 remotes, the keyless entry, and(most importantly)my wife's minivan remote. He even replaced a board on the side of the garage for no cost. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Replaced both of my garage doors, all the associated hardware, the two lifting mechanisms, and all remotes.
