The service person checked the components of our AC systems and took measurements to determine how well the components were performing relative to desired specifications. He went through the results to make sure we understood, and was professional and polite. Some components were a bit off specs, but not enough that action was needed at this time. He offered to enroll us in their annual maintenance program, which is typical for these businesses. He was not pushy. If we weren't planning to move, we might have signed up.

It went very well. They scheduled the time, They were on time, very thorough with their inspection of my air conditioning quickly and gave me various options on what I can do as far as getting a maintenance contract with them or getting a new air conditioning system. The professional and the demeanor of the guy that came over stood out.

I was very impressed with the customer service I received from Appleton Campbell. The technician that was sent to my house (Michael) arrived on time and spent a lot of time with me going over the various options for my 80 gallon electric water heater replacement. Michael also took the time to test my well water for me (At no charge) and brought it to my attention that my water was very acidic and that my neutralizer tank was not working properly. I plan to call Michael back in the next few weeks to have them service my neutralizer tank. Unfortunately as of April 2015 they are no longer making 80 Gallon water heaters so I was unable to use this company for the installation. Michael did provide me with other alternatives to an 80 Gallon tank but the new Hybrid systems are out of my budget and a 50 gallon water heater will not cut it for the size of my house. Michael and Appleton Campbell have been added to "My Favorites" on Angie's List and plan on using them in the future for other services/projects. Make sure to request Michael as your Tech!

After I read the Angie's List reviews, I went to their website and discovered they have a coupon code on their site to save you either $25 or $50. My total before the $50 discount was $286. This included a $49 charge to come out and the parts/labor for the work that was done. They called ahead to say that they were running a few minutes behind. They were courteous. I asked for estimates on 3 other plumbing issues. The tech wrote out everything and recommended that I buy some of the parts to save money and then they could do the repair work. The Powder Room Toilet was constantly running water and the handle was hard to flush. The plumber had to leave to pick up the part that he needed. He repaired the toilet the same day and was very professional. I would use Appleton Campbell Plumbing again.

After arranging a 11:00 - 13:00 window, Appleton Campbell called at 08:56 and advised that the tech would be here at 10:30. This was not a problem in this case, though the call was rather early and there was no acknowledgment that this time was outside the agreed window. At the (re)appointed time the tech, Chris, arrived and after being show the various locations began his inspection. Following a couple of his observations he found me and discussed his findings, showing me where appropriate and answering all my questions. Based on the discussions including going over his report at the end, it appears his inspection was quite thorough. At the end he engaged in a little sales activity for some relevant products and a service subscription, but not in any objectionable way.

First - the office staff are very professional and personable & friendly. They call to let you know when their employees will be coming and follow up as well. Three young men (20's) showed up on time - extremely professional and very well mannered. They put down drop clothes on our hard wood - used the booties to cover their shoes - they cleaned up everything. This is a company of excellence and you don't see this level of professionalism very much anymore. The price may slightly higher (not sure) - but we would rather pay a little to have the level of professionalism where they do the job right the first time! We also had a second unit worked on by another employee and he was also very professional. They are very good at explaining the work they do in your home. Great job Appleton & Campbell.

A plumber came out to review the job, compiled a list of what needed done and then gave us the exact cost for the job. The particular toilet that we needed was not in stock at the Warrenton location and an installation date was scheduled. WT, the plumber, came out and performed the work in a professional and timely fashion. Everything we were told would happen, did, and there were no hidden costs. This is the second time we have used this company, and have been pleased on both occasions.

I returned home to find water running out of the front of my house under the kitchen window. I called three plumbers before finally reaching somebody which turned out to be Appleton Campbell. They had a plumber on site in less than two hours. The plumber was prompt, punctual and professional in demeaner. The leak ended up being located in a wall behind the cabinet under the kitchen sink. The plumber had to remove water lines to a disposal, instant hot water heater and other pieces of plumbing to access the area. He also had to cut a 12" x 12" hole in the wall to access the pipe in order to replace the leaky section. Although a price breakdown was supplied before cutting the hole in the wall, it was a very confusing estimate. It offered one price for the work and another price if you are an Appleton Campbell HSA customer. Although you initial the price breakdown, it is not clear which price you are initialing. I believed I was paying less than half of the charged cost for cutting the access hole in the wall. The cost just to cut a hole in the wall was over $400. I could have cut the hole in the wall for him if I had realized that was the actual amount being charged. Although the leak in the wall was repaired, removing and moving around the other plumbing resulted in multiple additional leaks within the week after the plumber left that the homeowner repaired. I have had a previous pinhole leak repaired with re-routing a section of plumbing for a quarter of the cost that Appleton Campbell charged. In a desperate situation where prompt attention is required and cost is not an issue, then Appleton Campbell is the one to call.

I apologize that the quote you received was confusing, we offer upfront pricing in writing to avoid any misunderstandings. The HSA is our Home Savings Agreement, this is a maintenance plan for your heating and air conditioning system. Customers who have the HSA receive a 15% discount on all repairs, we extend that discount to include plumbing and electrical. The price to cut the hole also included the diagnostic. When a leak isn’t detectable to the naked eye some investigation is required to locate the problem and to identify the solution. We take pride in offering prompt professional service and appreciate when customers take time to offer valuable feedback. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience so I may have the opportunity to discuss this further in more detail. Thank you Jennifer Deary Customer Service Manager

I called Appleton & Campbell as I'm a new owner of the property and the previous owner left materials indicating he had an HVAC service contract with Appleton Campbell, and thought they might know the property a bit. They refused to give me even a general estimate over the phone; and indicated they charged $49 for a service call, then they would give me an estimate upon arrival, and if I purchased their services the $50 would be applied to the invoiced amount. Well, the tech was 1/2 hour late to his 2 hour window; and I couldn't even explain my issue before he started telling me that the problem could be anything based on the age of the house (he knew I was a brand new owner of the home); and he couldn't possibly give me the free estimate, it would take a detailed analysis to figure it out this major issue. Based on his total sales job from the minute he got in the door, and that he was late and I had an appointment; I told him to write up his estimate and I would consider it. 15 min later, I got an estimate for $148 to do the "free" estimate, and $49 for the service fee (he didn't take it off the bill), and an estimate for remarking my breaker box panel for $340, installing all new switches and plugs in whole house because they are 20 years old for $3237. As I was now very late to get on a conference call at that point, I paid the $49 service fee which he took forever to process. I got a recommendation from another Angie's list provider the next week and called Root Electric for the same service. They gave me an estimate of $195 based on the description, with the understanding it could be more upon inspection. They came 15 min. early to a set appointment (no 2 hour window). They listened to my problem, went to the breaker box, and determined the loose wiring in a light socket in the basement within 5 min., and fixed it within 5 min.; fixed it so fast, I had them rewire a dimmer switch and a faulty 4 way switch, they did within 10 min; and charged me $2.50 for a new switch, so $197 total. So for the same initial problem they charged me less for the completed service than Appleton wanted me to pay just to receive the estimate. ( I had also scheduled a free HVAC inspection from Appleton Campbell since the previous owner had paid for it already; and basically received the same run-around minus the $49 service fee. He found $2800 in repairs and upgrades on what seems to be a functioning HVAC system that passed the Homeowner Inspection weeks before without comment; mostly add-ons, not repairs, and finally, for a fee, he could do a detailed analysis of what seemed to be a "serious" problem that he would need to disassemble the unit to access and review. So that would be in addition to the $2800. I will be calling another vendor to do a HVAC system review. I felt like an 18 year old girl taking her 1st car to the dealer for an oil change; who invariably needs a new engine as a result.

I am sincerely sorry that you had a bad experience. We pride ourselves on delivering superior service from top trained professionals. Our goal is to address the problem and educate the customer by making recommendations for any service we believe will be a benefit to you. We hesitate to offer pricing by telephone, we want to be sure to provide you with the correct price the first time rather than one amount over the phone that may change once we arrive. All of our pricing is flat rate, this means we charge by the job, not by the hour or by time and material so the price for your job is unique to you and your home. I equate this to phoning the doctor with my symptoms and asking to have medicine prescribed, an examination is necessary to provide the correct ‘fix’. We know your time is extremely valuable and regret that you were kept waiting causing you to miss an important phone call. We endeavor to keep in regular communication with the customer as sometimes the appointment before yours may run late. I appreciate you providing valuable feedback and again, offer our sincerest apologies. Respectfully, Jennifer Deary Customer Service Manager

A senior technician gave the house a thorough examination, including the circuit breaker panel and power requirements of all major appliances and quite a few minor ones to ascertain load requirements and whether any load shedding modules would be required depending on the generator selected. He listened carefully to my preferences. He discussed in detail my options, what the project would entail and how it would be carried out. This is in contrast to other companies I asked for bids, who either did a cursory review and came up with solutions I didn't like, or promised to show up to bid, but didn't even show up. All aspects of the work were done by crews large enough to get things done quickly with extreme attention to quality and to protecting my property with minimal inconvenience to me. Each stage of the work passed at its first inspection. This project involved critical coordination with the County building inspector, the electric company and the propane supplier, so there were many opportunities for problems. None occurred. Work was completed on time as promised, and to the highest standards I can imagine. They even did a very good job of regrading the trenching and reseeding the grass in the areas they had to dig up. I would definitely recommend Appleton Campbell for this kind of complex work in which price is less important than competence.

Purchased two new HVAC units for our house. Fantastic service and quality products. They came back to troubleshoot a problem with the upstairs unit 5 months later when we switched to heating from AC and discovered that the existing ductwork was not engineered appropriately (by the builder) causing the auxillery heat to come on too often. They came back and fixed the problem for no additional charge.
