Within two weeks all arrangements were finalized, the "players" schedules coordinated, and work commenced. First was the removal of the asbestos (accomplished by Young Environmental Services). An Appleton-Campbell four-man team spent the next two days dismantling and removing the boiler and hot-water heater; a separate contractor (Souithern Oil) was on site to pump out and remove the old oil tank Included was the code requirement that a stainless steel liner be installed in the chimney. Work progressed well, quickly, and professionally. The team worked flawlessly together accomplishing every task. The result is almost like a piece of art, with a small new boiler and a collection of quite nice looking copper pipes at various right angles. The new oil tank is just that, but it is installed at an out of the way location (still in the basement). We couldn't be more pleeased with the professionalism, performance, attitude, attention to detail, friendliness, willingness to take and answer questions, acceptance of my observing the work, and overall cooperation of the team. I would certainly welcome them back should the need arise and strongly recommend Appleton-Campbell and this team to others.
Description of Work: The annual inspection of our oil-fired boiler was meticulous. In the process, the Appleton-Campbell technician detected serious internal deterioration and that the fuel oil tank (also in the basement) showed signs of leaking, all of which were highlighted and explained. The house is nearly 100 years old and the boiler was initially coal-fired but at some point converted to oil. Both boiler and tank are assessed as original. The boiler and a portion of the "out-bound" water pipes were covered with asbestos "mud." The technician recommended replacement of both. A company representative inspected the property and confirmed the initial assessment and detected signs of leakage of our adjacent hot water heater, as well. He prepared a discounted estimate and we signed up for the work to be done. Included was the removal and replacement of the boiler, the oil tank, and the hot water heater. Also required was asbestos abatement and the installation of a stainless steel chimney liner.

We were overall pleased with the service, hence the "good" rating. However, the price was higher than other competitors, but since we were in a crunch situation we went with the company that could come the quickest. A supervisor did come out after the installation was completed and helped to pick up the debris left by the installer.

We had bad experinces witha few other companies and tried this one. They are on time and do a wonderful job. The service techs are polite and do not leave a mess. We will not call anyone else of we have a problem, They also intalled a new HVAC syastem for the house - we are now warm in the winter and cool in the summer with energy savings.

Initially the technician came to clean the system the price that was charged was excessive. When a new technician subsequently came when the air-conditioning system stopped working he tried to sell me a new system because he said the system was repairable but would cost about $3500.00 to repair but then tried to get me to not just repair the system but replace it altogether. The quoted price was between $7000.00 - $10000.00 to put a new system in. He did not check the original system to see if it was under warranty which it was and would have been repaired for around $1300.00. I had two other contractors come to check the system the final contractor that we had repair the system repaired the system for $900.00. The original cost paid to Appleton Campbell would not have needed to be spent had they known what they were doing and simply checked the warranty and the system instead of cleaning the system which then broke down and needed to be repaired. I feel they are just pushing services for pay rather than a concern to minimize cost for their customers. I would never use this company again nor would I recommend them to anyone.

I regret that this customer was unhappy with our service and prices. We offer upfront pricing before we perform any work suggested. It looks like the 2nd visit to this customer was an afterhour’s call which took place between 9:00-11:00 PM, I can only conclude that this is the reason we didn’t have all the proper warranty information. We take our customer service seriously and always try to exceed expectations. It is never our intention to ‘push services’ that aren’t needed We are fortunate to have a staff of qualified technicians with many years experience and it is their job to educate the customer by making recommendations they feel best meet the customers’ needs. We are always happy to answer additional questions, offer explanations and perform only the work the customer approves. I appreciate the honest feedback as we are always striving to improve and view each situation as chance to learn and grow.

They were friendly and professional. They quoted price of $355 including Senior Citizen discount in advance. They incurred a minor problem and had to cut a piece of the faucet so it would fit properly on the counter. They had to go to their truck for this cut. One of them said, "You got your money's worth this time!". I usually do all my plumbing so I was shocked at how much it cost to simply exchange one faucet for another. I willl likely do a simple job like this myself tnext time. This is the second time I have used this company. Last time was to diagnose and clean our gargabe disposal. I would use them again if I was unable to do the job. It took them about 40 minutes.
Description of Work: Two workers took out the old kitchen sink and replaced it with a similiar one I had purchased at Lowe's ($123.00. Brand: Moen). They provided no parts. .

We bought an older small farm will all its outbuildings wired with fuse boxes. a week later we bought an electric car, a week later we bought the 240 charger for it as required by Nissan. The garage electric does not come from the house so it was never updated when the house was so still has fuses in its panels. We planned to change the box, but the car came 1st. We called Appleton Campbell and were told there was a $100 charge for coming out and doing the estimate, but if we hired them it would come off the bill. Not a problem. Gary the electrician arrived and since we were planning to have more work done in the near future he was shown around. He started pushing a maintenance program where they would check our electric system regularly. What!! If we agreed to that, our bill today, would be a lot less, hundreds less. Nothing like a heap of coercion! Now he knew we were planning on major renovations so in the next year what he was seeing would be gone anyway. Unscrupulous. He saw the breaker box in the house and immediately started talking about how that brand causes fires and we needed to get rid of it right away. It is extremely dangerous and on and on giving the impression the house was seconds away from total conflagration. He said we could even Google it and see for ourselves. I was at work when I got the worried call. And I Googled it immediately. As it turned out, yes this is a bad brand, there are millions across the US and the company is out of business. However, these are not the breakers that have caused the fires. Every single report I read and picture I looked at showed the real culprit to have bright orange handles, pretty obvious tell tale. Many of the boxes also said Snap Lok. There is also a different way these are wired, but I couldn't see it on mine to tell. The home inspectors had not raised a brouhaha over it and in fact it is not in the report, but just to make sure, that night I called an electrician who had rewired my whole other house and is called in for my rental properties, but who unfortunately is 2 states away. He calmly suggested replacing the box and was glad it was scheduled for the spring. I gave the go ahead to instal the car charger only. I was shocked at the price, $700. I was told the invoice had everything broken down. I was not happy with the idea that the monthly check up was pushed and if I took it my bill would drop astronomically. That signaled to me that my bill was inflated. When I arrived home, for $700, I was expecting to see the fuse box in the garage gone with a new tiny breaker box in place and my charger hard wired in and ready to use. Instead the charger was placed exactly one foot from the still in place fuse box with a seven foot long wire going up the wall and back down to the charger. I was told it had taken Gary 3 hours to do that. I looked at the break down on the "invoice"and lo and behold there was no such thing. Instead there was a large list of all the projects they could do and the annual maintenance package and the price of each project. I was extremely irate and started thinking of writing this review. A few weeks later a Christmas post card arrived with a thanks and a coupon. A whole $20 off my next service and it made sure to say I could not combine it with any other coupon. I was overwhelmed by the apparent generosity. But the thing that made me actually take the time to write this? The tag line on the logo: Honesty, Integrity....

Response from Appleton Campbell
I was truly surprised when I read this review, as it goes against everything Appleton Campbell stands for. We celebrate 37 years in business this year and as a company we strive to operate to the highest professional standard and provide the best possible customer service at a fair price. We offer free estimates and charge a $49 trip fee for service calls, I’m not quite sure where the $100 fee that was noted came from (perhaps they called another company), We do offer a maintenance plan on HVAC systems that has the benefit of a 15% discount on plumbing and electrical repairs but at this time we don’t have an ‘electrical service contract’... I contacted the customer immediately after seeing this review; I spoke with the gentleman who was actually at home and met with the technician. He stated that Gary was extremely helpful and honest. The review was posted by his girlfriend who was not home at the time of service. Our technicians are provided with trucks, gas, uniforms, insurance, paid training, paid holiday time, medical & dental benefits, retirement… and they take a lot of pride in their quality of work. For anyone reading this post who knows this particular technician, Gary, they would simply laugh at these accusations as he is a true gentleman that does not have one pushy bone in his body. We stand behind our professionalism and integrity, when a technician notes something in need of repair or replacement it is their obligation to let the customer know. I hope customers that are considering our services will take the time to read the many positive reviews posted by other Angie’s list members.

If I could give higher than an A for the service quality, punctuality and professionalism I would. Prices on the high side (630 for a garbage disposal replacement and core replacement in a shower for parts plus service) but Larry (technician) was friendly, fast and cleaned up after the work was finished. You get what you pay for. They came out for same day service with no emergency surcharge and are open for normal service on saturdays. I will be using this company for any future plumbing / electrical / HVAC Needs.

Overall decent service. I would recommend them to friends.
Description of Work: Technician arrived ten minutes early. The shop called to inform us that he was en route. Technician did a complete evaluation of the system and determined that it needed freon added that was probably caused by improper installation. He explained that the standard system freon charge was based on a standard line run and our system was further away from the outside unit. While the system cooled, it wasn't as efficient as could be. He then gave us information on putting our system on a service plan and it's benefits. The cost wasn't too outrageous so we decided the benefit outweighed the cost.

We attempted to install a water system we had purchased on line. Once all of the parts were out of the box and all over the floor and counter, we were stuck on the plumbing part of the install. I call Appleton Campbell and had someone here assessing the situation within 2 hours. He gave me a written estimate to intstall the filter and a water line to my Keurig. I agreed to the price and he and his assistant installed both right then. No hassle / no problem.

We have oil heat. Quarles Energy referred us to Appleton when they ended their service program. Appleton's first visit on May 17th was to fulfill Quarles' service agreement with us. We had previously used their plumbing service after research on Angie's List and had been pleased at that time. The technician was on time, neatly dressed and very knowledgable. He explained what he had done and why. We were impressed and so at that time we decided to initiate a service agreement for both our furnace and our AC unit. The year long service agreement was $299.00. On May 24th the service technician came out to inspect our A/C. He, too, was on time, neatly dressed, and seemed very knowledgable. He was more than willing to answer my questions as well as volunteer information that he thought was important. He found mold growing in our inside unit and suggested a U/V light. He wrote up an estimate and explained what we could reasonably expect from the unit, as well as what some of his previous customers with this same unit had experienced. We chose to go ahead with the work and not pursue other estimates. The cost of the unit and installation was $1326.96. We also have an electronic air cleaner as part of our furnace. This was installed by Quarles. The technician also gave me some ideas on cleaning the device that I had not previously known. I have already recommended them to several friends and am definitely very please with their service.

The job went flawlessly. The technician arrived early morning as promised with the base and new unit. He removed the old unit and its brackets. Installed the base on pea gravel, then placed the new Carrier unit on the base. Proceeded to make the electrical connections and copper connections. Went inside and replaced the Core. Connected the vacumn pump and pumped the system down and made sure it was clean and free from contaminants. Filled the system with currently approved coolant and everything worked perfectly and continues to work this year.
Description of Work: They replaced old outdoor Trane unit with new Carrier Unit and matching Core inside the house. Installed a base for the unit. Replaced old thermostat with new digital/programmable one. I now have a Home A/C Service Agreement with them. Their price for the unit and work was about $1,000 less than the nearest competitor.

When I called, the person was very professional, efficient, and helpful. She offered to send out multiple people for different estimates, but I decided to just focus on the plumbing for that day. The serviceman showed up ontime (!!) and was very courteous and competent. He provided an estimate before he did the work. The work was done well and correctly. As noted above, he did not even charge me for resolving a problem due to my not knowing how to use my system (even though the system had been installed by a different company).
Description of Work: I had the serviceman come out to check a problem I was having with hot water and to install a soap dish in the kitchen. The serviceman showed me what I was doing wrong with the hot water and did not charge me! I had him install the soap dish. There was a standard $75 fee. Considering that I live 20 minutes outside of Culpeper, that was a reasonable rate. I appreciate the punctuality. Most contractors I have worked with have not been punctual when coming so far out of town.

I was pleased with the service. When I called the office the response was efficient and informative. I received a call back establishing a time for the serviceman to appear. Because he encountered difficulty in completing the job before mine he was a couple of hours late. However, I was kept informed by two separate phone calls as to his arrival. Once he arrived, he rapidly assessed the situation, provided an estimate, and completed the work in short order. There are probably less expensive plumbers (there is a $49 fee for coming out) but the quality made it worth the price. In addition there was a 10 percent coupon for Angie's List members. I would assuredly use them again.

The work was good, but I had a severe case of sticker shock when he told me it would be $500. (For what ended up being 2 hours of work and about $15 in parts) The pricing was up front, and I could have told him no, but I've heard good things about this company and decided to pull the trigger and pay their price. Hopefully I get what I paid for and will not have problems with this drain for a long, long time. I signed up for a dual-zone, two-visit boiler service agreement and received a slight discount on the plumbing work. I will probably not use them again for plumbing due to the high price, but they did good work.
Description of Work: The kitchen sink drain was leaking at the pea trap, so he re-plumbed the drain for the two kitchen sinks. While waiting for the PVC glue to dry, he looked at my water heater and told me it was 20 years old and they could install a tankless heater for over $4000. Saw my somewhat old Kenmore water softener and told me they could install one for just over $3000. No real pressure to buy anything, but he was just trying to get sell the company and their products - can't fault him for that.

From my first call for a quote to making the final payment for the work performed I had the pleasure of swift personal and proffesional service NO MACHINES TO TALK TO real people every time. Their technician was on sight to quote the work the day after my first call and once I had reviewed their quote against several of their competitors disinterested and self serving performances, I proceeded with Appleton Campble, not the cheapest, but certainly the most proffesional down to business company I approached. The work was performed well within the time frames given, their technicians performed in a proffesional and respectfull manner and evrything functioned as promised, there were no unexpected fees or charges, what they quoted is what they charged. Their after service follow up and concern for our satisfaction has secured our loyalty to this non franchised, privately owned and personaly run Company.
Description of Work: When our organization moved into our new premises, which had been unoccupied for several years we experienced problems with our well pump, water heaters, water softner and filtration system, and the HVAC system which required inspection and servicing. They flushed our plumbing, shock treated our well, replaced the pullout switch for the pump, replaced the water softner and filtration system, replaced the two old gas water heaters with two instant water heaters, performed a full test and service on the HVAC system including the gas fire places.

You be the judge--1. We have been long time clients of Quarles Petroleum with whom we had a service agreement--they apparently decided to get out of the service game and handed over their client list to Appleton Campbell--6 months later nothing and when we called them about service they said our contract had expired...no notification..so We solicited five quotes to replace our oil burner--they ranged from $11,000 to $5,000--Appleton Campbell was the $11,000 one--a lot of rubbish about 4 days of work etc etc..we finally had it done for $6,100 in one day by WF Harris So we finally called AC for a quote on an annual service agreement--they said they will come out on Friday at 9:00 am--by 10:30 no one showed and we canceled,,,,

Response from Appleton Campbell
I was very surprised and upset to see this review. I apologize to this customer. As a small company in business for 36 years we strive to operate to the highest professional standards at a fair price. We take a lot of pride in our quality of work and our customer service. The transition with Quarles occured in the summer of 2011 and we were excited to have their technicians join our team. The transition was fairly smooth and we performed the Quarles visit due for this customer in October and their contract expired in December. As a result of this visit, we e-mailed a proposal with a base price as well as options and upgrades. We understood that the customer chose another company. It was unfortunate that when this customer called inquiring about our service agreement we were unable to arrive at the time requested. This has prompted a staff meeting as we continue to address ways of improving and growing with the Quarles customers in Northern Virginia. I would like to end by thanking this customer for his valuable feedback and a hard lesson learned. Sincerely, Heather Appleton

They were very prompt, professional and honest. They could have ripped us off and told us we had to replace the whole thing, but they told us it was just the coils that were broken. They let us pay in split payments. Culpepper is not a large area and there are a lot of companies that will work with you. Appleton Campbell Inc were really kind and fixed it first and let us pay after. Not everybody is going to do that. Our house is 10 years old and he let my husband know about future work that we will have to do. He was very thorough. They came on an emergency call, on the weekend, unfortunately he was not able to fix it and we had to wait for the parts to come in. They came right when the parts came in. They have 24 hour service but you do have to pay for emergency visits. We were very happy with them. When the unit needs to be replaced we will go with them again. They are very customer service oriented and worked with us. They actually care about their customers and want your repeat business.
Description of Work: Appleton Campbell Inc came out because our air conditioner broke. They fixed a leak in the coils in the secondary air conditioning unit. It would have been $8,000 to replace the whole air conditioner.

We cannot say enough good things about Appleton Campbell. From the front desk to the technicians, everyone was very thorough and proffessional. We had a water main leak under our house. Once the job was scheduled the technicians were at our house on time and the job went off exactly as they had explained it would. While we had many questions throughout the process, each employee we dealt with took the time to answer our questions and made sure we understood the entire process. These days its hard to find a reputable service company you can trust. We would have no hesitation in recommending Appleton Campbell to any of our friends and family. Mike, Heather, Scott and the whole Appleton Campbell organiztion...THANK YOU !!!
Description of Work: We had a water main break, and we had no idea until we received a $400 water bill. We called 3 service providers for estimates. Appleton Campbell was the only one who came out that very same day to give us an estimate. The estimate they provides us blew the other two competitors out of the water and included service that was not even listed on the other 2 companies quotes we received. They explained they would need to dig under our driveway and drill into the side of our house to fix our leak.
