The air conditioner was not properly installed by the previous company, so the coolant was all leaked out. They didn't have a clue about it, but these guys did it in 5 minutes.

My 90 year old mother called Appleton Campbell to fix one of her A/C units that was not running. The Tech called me with the diagnosis: 1. The condenser fan was fried. 2. The run capacitor was bad. 3. The system was low on Freon. Total fee to fix around 1,200.00. I told the Tech that was way out of line, that a fan motor cost around 75.00 and the run capacitor about 25.00. I also asked him how did he know the Freon level if the unit was not running??he had no answer on that one. I told him to put the system back the way he found it and to leave the property. The next day I removed the fan and want to the local HVAC store. We put the motor on their test bench, it ran fine. I purchased a new run capacitor and the A/C unit ran fine. As for the Freon level, putting my gauge set on it, showed normal pressures. My opinion: The Tech either tried to take advantage on a 90 year old female, or didn?t have a clue what he was looking at. My mom cancelled her service contract, never will I consider using Appleton Campbell again.
Description of Work: Trouble shot inop A/C unit and provided price to fix.

Response from Appleton Campbell
I have been with Appleton Campbell for over 9 years now and one of the things I respect most about this company is the honesty and integrity. I wouldn't be able to work with a company otherwise. This review goes against everything I know Appleton Campbell to stand for. I am truly sorry that any customer would feel this way. Many of our customers are senior citizens and have been with us for years and years, several of them tell me that it’s the trust they have in our technicians that is so comforting to them. We offer a senior discount and always provide pricing upfront so that no customer will ever pay for a service without knowing what it is first. We only employ highly skilled service technicians. We provide paid training, medical and dental benefits as well as retirement options. Our technicians take a lot of pride in their quality of work and stand behind their professionalism. They have no reason to try to take advantage of anyone. I appreciate this customer taking the time to offer feedback, it is so important to us as a company to understand the feelings of our customers and to have the opportunity to learn from each experience. Appleton Campbell is that company that has gotten it all right. They believe in top of the line customer service and care and back it up with professionals that know what they are doing. This is the only company we have dealt with in a long time that we have been absolutely completely happy with. From the first phone call to set an appointment to check out our units to the final installation the employees at Appleton Campbell have been courteous, friendly, helpful and professional. They must have a great company culture as more than one of their employees has commented that they like working for Appleton Campbell for one reason or another, primarily because Appleton Campbell wants the work done right and will back it up and they like that. We decided to get all new systems at the same time and knew that Appleton Campbell would be our contractor of choice. At every step they confirmed that our decision was the right one. The men showed up when they said they would and they worked throughout the day. What was impressive to us is that they worked steadily and helped each other and really seemed to enjoy what they were doing. I consider the installation of our new furnace to be a work of art as Jason's work is meticulous. The whole space down there in the basement looks so much nicer now. When the job was finished the various work areas were completely cleaned up and nice and neat. To a man, they all cared about doing the job right and that was obvious. Impressive as well was the fact that the price that was quoted was the price we paid. We were grateful for some of the recommendations that were made regarding some safety issues as well as some changes that would make the space better utilized. These guys know the code and are able to catch any changes that affect safety etc. (Thanks, Dave) These guys mentor each other and work well together and the work they do reflects that. Watching them work we were impressed with the knowledge each had of their craft. So thank you, Jason, Jeff, Mike, Jake, Larry and W.T. And Dave too for the excellent follow up. It has been several weeks now and we are still happy with the work that was done. I waited to write this so that we could see how things were working and it's all good.

One faucet required locating the inside water line leading to the faucet, and then cutting through paneling and sheetrock to remove and replace the faucet. The work was somewhat messy but they cleaned it up well, replaced the insulation & covered the exposed area with a removeable access panel. The other faucet was easier to replace and included correcting sloppy work that had been done when the previous faucet had been installed. The two workers were polite , neat and careful not to track water and mud into the house or basement
Description of Work: Completely replaced two outside faucets. Both required complete replacement. AC checked to see if replacement parts were available, but determined they were not.

They were quick to come out, but definitely "salesy" with lots of glossy brochures. Was more interested in a big sale; he was more of a salesman and less concerned with getting our heat up and running ASAP during our coldest winter in history! He trash talked other brands and companies (which I find to be an indication of a bad company) and his estimate was more than 50% higher than two other companies we had talked too. When he followed up with us we told him we were going to go with another company to save $3,000 and he again trash talked the other brand we were going to buy. (Trane is the brand we bought, he was trashing them, which seems crazy to us as they are recognized to be a great product) Bottom line: 1) They wanted to charge us $11,000 for a unit that had a smaller output than what we bought for $6800. 2) They didn't seem concerned at all that we were freezing with no heat. They saw we were in need and tried to take advantage.
Description of Work: The tech that came out (an emergency call) to look at our unit.

I apologize that you didn’t have a positive experience with Appleton Campbell and I thank you for taking the time to let us know about it. We take customer feedback very seriously as well as our customer’s comfort. We want to get you back up and running as soon as possible. I looked back at the service call that took place in January. It looks like our technician checked two systems and offered repair options for both systems along with two replacement prices. One of those options was only $400.00 more than the $6800.00 you paid. I wasn’t sure if there was a misunderstanding. We pride ourselves in not having pushy sales tactics but rather educating the customer and providing all available options. I was surprised to read your description of the technician’s attitude as the correspondence between all of you seemed very enthusiastic. I wish you the best moving forward and again offer my sincere apologies. Respectfully, Jennifer Deary

Their technician (Larry) arrived the afternoon after I called for an estimate. A bottom line price (lower than expected) was agreed before any work was started -- which is the company's business model. The heaters and necessary supplies were ordered and the removal of the old heaters was begun. The requested material arrived shortly thereafter. The work was completed in a very professional manner. I am very pleased that I called A-C for this job.

Very nice people to deal with. They had unfortunate illness causing the first appointment to cancel. My husband was off the whole week so rescheduling wasn't a problem. The second appointment we thought would be for the install but it was to appraise the job of installing 2 ADA height toilets we purchased on our own. They quoted us about $850, would schedule for a couple days later, and wanted half of the money up front, the balance to be paid at the time of install. My husband was told that jobs were now commonly quoted and charged by the type of service, not by the hour. We have had no recent experience with plumbing service and do not know if this is common or not. There was one plumber arrived to do the install, extremely nice, professional and personable. It took about 2 1/2 hours for him to install both toilets. He supplied wax rings that were supposed to be better for second floor toilets, new water supply lines and they did haul away and dispose of the old toilets. He did a fantastic job, everything was left spotlessly clean and installed perfectly. I would hire him back in a minute. If I am not mistaken, we were charged a $29 trip fee for both the estimate and the actual service. Maybe $400 to install a toilet is the going rate these days, it just seemed a bit excessive to pay $300 per hour or more. We need faucets installed next, but considering the price, we will be shopping around for the next home improvement.

Response from Appleton Campbell
Thank you so much for your kind words, I am so pleased that you are happy with the services provided to you. Our technicians take pride in the quality and efficiency of their work. I wanted to take a moment to go over our pricing. Appleton Campbell is a flat rate company so we charge by the task rather than by the hour, what I like about that is you always receive a firm price upfront, we won’t do any work without your approval and you won’t pay more if the technician runs into unforeseen difficulties. You also don’t have to worry about paying more for a slower technician. We charge a trip fee for the first visit related to your job, we take a look at the work you would like completed, offer recommendations and provide an accurate price the first time. The second trip in this case was for the installation; we don’t charge an additional trip fee or raise the price to come out a second time. As a company we strive to operate to the highest professional standard and provide the best possible customer service at a fair price. Appleton Campbell proudly celebrated 37 years in business this year, is locally owned and operated, and has a strong dedication to the local community, its employees and customers. We always appreciate our customers taking the time to offer valuable feedback. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions or comments Jennifer Deary

The tech showed up on time. I instructed him what was required. He looked at the line, the logs, and the propane tanks. He said it would be an easy install. He said he would check the truck to make sure he had all the required parts and that he would give me the cost. He came back and said he had the parts and showed me the sheet with the cost. $656.00! Repeat $656.00! My in-laws had and entire system installed to include the digging and laying of 100 feet of gas line and hookup for less than the price I was quoted. I paid the $49 fee for coming out and told him I would never recommend his company to anyone.
Description of Work: I called and scheduled an appointment to have a set of gas logs that I purchased hooked up to the gas line. The line was already there in the fireplace. The only work required was a shutoff valve installed, lengthen the line by one foot, and hook up the line to the logs.
