I have a very good experience. We spoke to Mr. Stafford and he has been very professional and very knowledgeable.
Description of Work: We got a quote for putting a room on the back of our house. They would be taking the sunroom down and put a new one up.

During the week that the kitchen was supposed to be done my family came through town last minute. Stafford was able to accommodate until the following week. The project was supposed to take a week. However, it was done in 3 days. Earlier than expected which gave us time to paint the kitchen and do the final touches.
Description of Work: I choose Stafford & Son Builders to do my kitchen remodel. For such a big project, I got a few quotes from several contractors. I decided to go with Stafford because of his level of professionalism. He was the only contractor that gave me a proposal in writing. The other contractors were vague and told me “estimates on what it would cost”. I was still left wondering how much it would completely cost. With Stafford, I mentioned what I needed, and he proposed exactly such services. Other contractors tried to persuade us to do more out of our budget. The written proposal made it easier once I understood the cost of cabinetry, countertops, floors, appliances, labor, etc. The cabinetry vendor (B&T Kitchens & Baths) he uses was also very professional. My budget was constraint but in no manner did Stafford or B&T made me feel as I was a small sale. Stafford workers were also professional, on time and never left any untidiness behind. Their communication was on point. As we had other contractors experience and at times the owner and workers wouldn’t communicate with each other and customer.

We thank these clients for their nice review. We were glad they chose us to help with their kitchen remodel. It's true it wasn't a large kitchen, but never the less, when ever you remodel a kitchen its an important one, and we were happy to be involved. It went very smooth and quick because they had everything selected ahead of time.

We thank these clients for their kind words. They were great to work with. Everything went smoothly because we lined everything up before we got started. We just finished their kitchen updating as well, and that too went smooth and quick also. We are happy they chose us to start with, because we often do follow up projects for our clients after the first one is done because they are so happy with the results.

I contacted Tom (the son of Stafford & Son) and within a couple of days he came out to the house to discuss our project and look at the existing deck. By the end of the next day he called and said that he had a quote for us and insisted on setting a time to come back out to the house to present it and review it. While I initially thought that a bit strange, I soon realized that Tom wanted to be able to explain his quote in detail and answer any questions that we may have had about the project. Additionally, he took the opportunity to show us before and after photos of some similar projects he had done previously. It clearly would have been quicker and easier for him to send us his quote via e-mail, but it was this personal attention that convinced us to choose Stafford and Son for the job. Once we contracted the job, Tom had the plans drawn up, reviewed them with us, and took care of all the permitting involved. About the only negative that we encountered in the entire process was the amount of time that passed before the project really got started, but that was understandable given that we contracted it in the early Spring when business was ramping up. During this wait, Tom was great about updating us on his schedule and when he projected construction to start. While we were originally looking to just put a roof over the existing deck, after discussing it with Tom we made the decision to remove it and start from scratch. He explained that the perimeter of the existing deck would have to be removed to pour the footer for the columns supporting the new roof, so it made sense to us to spend a little extra to avoid having issues with having too many joints, matching lumber, etc. In retrospect, we’re glad we made this decision as the new deck turned out great and is much better looking than the old one. In addition to adding the roof, Tom’s quote also included installing a ceiling fan and flood light fixture that we provided. Once demolition of the old deck got underway things moved along well. From demolition to completion, the entire process took about three and a half weeks. I suspect that it would have been more like two and a half had it not been for a few weather delays thrown into the mix. Tom arranged for an open top dumpster for construction debris as well as a portable toilet for his crews to minimize any disruptions. Tom was quick to respond to any questions we had during construction and was on site most mornings to meet with his crews and update us on his timeline. Both of his crew leads, Aaron (deck) and Jeremy (roof structure), were always courteous, professional, and happy answer questions or explain what was going on and what was up next. Everyone else who worked on the project was equally polite and respectful. Tom made sure to inform us when to expect the city inspectors throughout the process and was able to schedule them in order to minimize down time. With the exception of the few days that we were without a deck (which made taking the dog out a challenge), the whole evolution went off with minimal inconvenience. We are extremely pleased with the end result and would not hesitate to recommend Stafford and Son to anyone looking to have construction work done. While our direct experience was only with the deck and roof, I’m confident based on our interaction (as well as the other glowing reviews here) that Stafford & Son Builders would be an excellent choice for any project.
Description of Work: We had an existing deck and wanted to have a cover/roof put on. In the end we decided to completely remove the existing deck and have it rebuilt along with the roof construction.

Tom, with Stafford and Sons, was very helpful and professional. He provided a quote the very next day that we met along with a timetable. He was very considerate of the needs we had and worked with us on every detail. He was on time for everything and the work he provided was excellant. The people he employed were trustworthy, reliable and cleaned up after themselves. I highly recommend his services and will definitely look into using his services again.

We thank this client for their nice review. They are a friend of a friend. We were very happy to be able to help with this project. We added a shower downstairs because the client’s elderly mother was moving in and was not able to walk up the stairs to use one of the current showers. We were told our price was higher than other ones they had received but they were impressed with our professionalism and attention to detail. We are glad we finished the job on time and the mother loves her new shower.

Tom was extremely helpful and punctual from day one. He was very professional with the estimate, and worked with my wife to brainstorm ideas for our renovation. His estimate was a little higher than some of the others we got, but it was clear from his professionalism and prior reputation that it would be worth it. In hindsight I feel that we got a great deal with the work that was provided. After our structural engineer came out to survey the wall we wanted removed, Tom found that we did not need the extra bracing and therefore saved us a significant amount of money. We decided to use that money on various other things and Tom was great throughout the process. We are very happy with the work. There was a significant delay in ordering matching cabinets, but Tom installed a similar cabinet door while we waited and it was no big deal. He also said that he would have a cleaner come in an clean after the work. We weren't happy with the cleaning job, (his regular person cancelled on him), so he gave us a $150 credit instead) which we thought was very fair. Overall he always called us back quickly, was flexible and fair, and the work was excellent. I have already recommended him to my parents (who are using him) and my in-laws. I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Tom Re-finished and sanded our wood floors, removed a wall, opened up our kitchen while adding counter space and extra cabinets, added wainscoting, and installed a large walk-in closet with a new wall in our master bedroom, shelfing, hangers, and the associated ventilation.

Tom and his team were patent and professional. I had a couple of other contractors come out to look at the problem, but Tom was the only one that came up with a reasonable plan to diagnose, then fix the problem while staying in a pre- determined budget for each phase. His crew was polite and kept the mess down to a minimum and cleaned up behind themselves at the end of each day. Tom provided a detailed written estimate, and was fairly accurate with labor costs and completion date, even when the repair required a bit more work than originally planned once the crew got the area exposed.

His house is on the beach and water leaks are very common. We are glad we were given the opportunity to find the cause of his leak and repair it. We ended up replacing the rubber membrane roof and the entire deck. He selected to upgrade to composite ,which was a great choice. His new roof and deck should last another 20 years without any more trouble.

I cannot say enough good things about Tom and his crew/subcontractors. We had a fairly extensive renovation planned as you can see. Tom did what he said he would do, when he said it would be done, and was extremely flexible as we began expanding the project as the process went along. Initially, we had planned only the 2 bathrooms, but as with any old house (our foundation dates to 1879), there is a never-ending list of things that work-but-could-be-better. As one area improved, it just made the other deficient areas more glaring, so we threw them on also. Essentially, we had our whole 2nd floor worked on, and corrected some deficiencies on the 3rd floor as well. Tom was very transparent on the price, both for the initial estimate and for our add-ons, showing us exactly what the subs billed him. If you need any tile work done, I HIGHLY recommend Tom, just for access to his tile guy. We had some tricky areas in small spaces (older house, remember) that were handled spectacularly. One thing to keep in mind - Tom is a general contractor, not a design-build firm. To get the best results, he will need you to do some legwork as far as design and fixtures but if you can present him with detailed plan, his crew can carry it out flawlessly.

Repair of plaster in master and 2nd bedroom and stairwell. Repainting of master and 2nd bedroom, and stairwell. Repositioning of toilet in 3rd floor bathroom (above the planned renovation area) Reflooring of 3rd floor bathroom Removal of all old cast-iron pipe and replaced with new PVC, up to the roof

We thank this member for his kind words and great review. This is one of the historic homes in the Ghent section of Norfolk. We love to work on these homes because they are challenging and require creative solutions in order to upgrade and keep with the original design features. With the old plaster walls and the amount of settling that has taken place, these jobs can always be a little tricky. Both clients are doctors and were great to work with. This project presented unexpected repairs and improvements and we appreciated the owner’s patience and understanding.

WONDERFUL! We have a deck above our living room that required a deck. Because it is on the beach and subject to high winds, it was very important that the job be done correctly. Stafford & Sons arrived every day promptly at 8 am, worked without a break until 5 or 5:30....and did an excellent job. They removed the siding and re-surfaced the walls against leakage; they raised the doors; they covered the balcony with rubber and sealed EVERYTHING. Their workmanship was perfect..... They beveled the edges, added extra caulk to every crack and cranny.....there are thousands of details that they paid attention to. To block any leaking (yes, we had had a problem before), they covered every surface and made sure that there was no way that water would leak. They discovered that the 2 sliding doors were not installed correctly (there was wind coming in) so they re-installed them and took extra efforts to ensure that the doors were now tight and level. They noticed details that no one else had.......and fixed them. They also roofed-over our porch downstairs with hurricane-shingles. When we came home, everything was clean (yes, they vacuumed every day before they went home) and tidied up. Most important, they listened to my questions (I tend to question everything) and answered everything to my satisfaction. I AM IMPRESSED!

From the initial contact, Tom Stafford was responsive, friendly and thorough. He was very receptive to what we wanted for our new addition, but was also able to provide some guidance based on his previous experience. He gave an itemized quote, that was within the budget that we had anticipated. We stayed on budget during the project, even with a few upgrades/add ons that I had not anticipated wanting (but were worth it). His estimated timeline was 3-4 months for our project, and exceeded our expectations as the project was completed within 11 weeks. All of his subs were professional, courteous and provided excellent work. Tom was also sure to provide feedback and updates routinely to keep us informed. Our addition involved knocking down the backside wall of our brick ranch home, and adding on a master suite and a sunroom. The master suite is a carpeted bedroom, walk in closet and master bath. The sunroom included double french doors exiting the house to the back patio and a hardwood floor. He also added an enclosed outdoor shower on a different section of the house. We are incredibly pleased with the product and the experience. We would not hesitate to recommend Stafford and Son to others.

I live approximately 200 miles from the site of the repair. My mother lives in the property and needed a contractor to complete repair and remodel work. The bath off of the master bedroom was damaged by water to the extent that the plumber suggested that it not be used until repaired. I contacted Angies List for suggested contractors in the Virginia Beach area. They sent me a list of 4 and I searched the list and added a few more. Tom listened to my needs and scheduled an appointment. I actually scheduled five appointments for estimates. Three showed up, however one could not start the job until a month later and the other came to the appointment unprepared and gave me an estimate which was $4000-$5000 with me purchasing and picking up all the supplies. Tom was prompt and even called to ask if he could come early. He took time with my mother and I and forwarded me a written estimate via e-mail. He even returned to the property to go under the house to take pictures that were shared with my mother and me via e-mail. There were no surprises all subs showed up as scheduled and the job was completed within one week. Every aspect of this job was completed in a professional manner. Although I was on site for the repairs I would not have hesitated to return home and leave this project in the hands of Tom Stafford. Great Job. I would definitely use them again.

We live in the Fredericksburg area, but have this house in Virginia Beach. It is a garage apartment that was built in the 1920's that we use as a vacation house. Tom arrived when he said he would and talked with us about what we wanted to do with the little garage apartment. He seemed to understand that we wanted to keep its 1920 charm, but bring it up to date at the same time. He followed up with an estimate that was broken into tasks so we could see where the costs were going. Before we could sign a contract with him, a tornado tore the porch roof, some of the house roof and the chimney off the little house. Tom came right out again to assess the damage and readjust his estimate. He worked with us and the insurance company to identify which tasks were covered by insurance and which were our upgrades. He also worked with our structural engineer and the insurance mitigation team to identify what needed to be addressed to ensure the house was safe to live in again. I have another house on the property that I just upgraded with new siding and HVAC. Since I wanted to match what I did on the other house, Tom worked with me to integrate the siding contractors and the HVAC contractors with his work. Tom was responsive to every phone call and worked to solve any problem along the way. He never put me off as some contractors do when a problem arises. He arranged for contractors to do the work in the optimum sequence. Some of his contractors were outstanding and some were just okay. His tile subcontractor for the bathroom and kitchen was fantastic and did a superb job. He has several carpenter/handymen on his payroll that are excellent and did much of the demolition and rough carpentry. They sealed up the holes in the roof right away. They did a lot of the fill in work along the way. Tom referred me to designers to help me redesign the kitchen and bathroom as well as select appropriate finishes, appliances and fixtures. There were some additional tasks along the way that were not identified on the original contract. Tom charged me for the actual time and materials plus a percentage to cover his costs which I thought was very fair. Tom provided a reasonable level of protection for the worksite. We did not suffer any theft during the contract work. It was wonderful to be able to rely on a general contractor when we were not able to be there the whole time ourselves.
Description of Work: Demolished interior/exterior in preparation for rebuild. Rebuilt a roof from tornado damage. Demolished chimney damaged in tornado and moved closet where the chimney was. Rewired house, replumbed house. Replaced all windows, insulated ceiling/walls, installed new ceiling, installed all new flooring. Rebuilt kitchen from studs out, installed new bathroom from studs out, installed new light fixtures. Built new porch and stairs, painted interior, caulked and weatherproofed house, ground out and filled in step cracks in the foundation, installed drainage lines in front of house foundation.

Mr. Tom Stafford was punctual, professional and extremely easy to deal with as I described the project. He made many helpful suggestions and recommendations and gave me great insight on how the job would take shape and proceed. He was particularly attentive to my concerns. I have contracted work on the house in the past, but never for a job of this size and expense. His written proposal was detailed and very thorough, making it easy to compare it with the other proposals I received. His numbers came in higher than the company I selected, but was not the highest. All in all, it was a good experience for me and I would not hesitate to ask the company for proposals on future work.

From initial meeting to project phases and completion, he and all of his sub-contractors were reliable and top-notch. I would recommend Tom and his team for any home build/renovation/remodel project. We expect to hire him again to renovation bathrooms.
Description of Work: Built an attached brick two-car garage to our home.

Tom was communicative, courteous, organized, and responsive. For us to keep one functioning complete bathroom, the company had to do it as two jobs back-to-back. There were minimal problems because of the high level of communication and the quality of the job. The job finished approximately as scheduled although they had to replace some knob-and-tube wiring and deal with some other issues related to any house built in 1924. The final bathrooms are _exactly_ as we had expected and hoped. We recommend Stafford and Sons without reservation.

Stafford and Son Builders (SSB) did a fabulous job! We have been in the process of restoring our 100-year old house. For the past 3 years we wanted to rebuild the front second floor balcony balustrade to conform to its historical design and to resemble the first floor balustrade which had been reconstructed by a firm of craftsmen which unfortunately went out of business. Finding a similar firm which we felt we could trust was very difficult. We had already had one bad experience with a contractor for this second floor balustrade. Reconstructing this balcony balustrade, fascia and under deck ceiling was very difficult because of the complexity in design. The previous balustrade had been repaired on an ad hoc basis and the original design had been compromised. SSB took on this major project which was all the more challenging because the front balcony is a focal point of the house. SSB did an outstanding job. SSB had to build 8 new jewel boxes and 7 new rail posts - these had to conform to the historic designs which entailed much detailed work. The SSB master carpenter, Jeremy Saull, was incredible - he spent hours and hours on the weekends just putting in place small pieces of wood so that the balcony would look historically correct. Furthermore, the boxes and rails had to be joined in a complicated pattern so they would fit together properly on the second floor deck plus be in alignment with the reconstructed and improved hidden gutter system on the second floor and the 6 columns on the first floor veranda. Another problem was rainfall ponding on the deck - a result of the bad experience with the previous contractor, as noted above. Because of his broad experience, Jeremy was able to advise our roofer as to how to install the anchor boxes so that the jewel boxes would be protected from any possible future ponding. Working with Mr. Tom Stafford was a dream. He personally checked on the work performed almost every day. He was very patient in explaining what was being done, what materials were being used, etc. He listened carefully to any concerns. You could tell that his goals were to do an excellent job and to not only meet your expectations but also to fulfill your dreams. For example, we had made a mistake in explaining the overall design of the balustrade - this mistake became apparent at the end of the project. Mr. Stafford asked us if we were happy with the final project result. We were very happy with his work - but with trepidation, I explained my mistake - I said we would just have to deal with correcting the matter sometime in the future. Mr. Stafford immediately asked Jeremy if he could make the change now! And Jeremy did make the change immediately! We were utterly delighted and thunderstruck! The final result is that the second floor balustrade, fascia and under deck ceiling beadwork look as though they are original to the 100-year old house. This is the highest praise we could possibly give to any crafts person or contractor in the restoration of our home!
Description of Work: Reconstructed a beautiful historic wooden portico trimmed with balustrade, fascia and ceiling, using both new and original materials, for a 100-year old Georgian-style house.

I contacted the provider and left voice mail. Received phone call from the owner who was out of town. He gave me his son's number. I contacted the son and spoke with him regarding my project. He informed me that they were unable to do the job because I was looking strictly for an installer as I already have my cabinets. He was courteous and helpful.

The experience was fabulous. Stafford and Son were always punctual, professional and willing to go the extra mile. They were always on time, remained on schedule and always cleaned up after their work daily. Additionally, as a Child Development facility, they were very accommodating regarding their work and our schedule. Tom Stafford checked daily to ensure we were happy with the quality of the work and corrected items on the spot if the work did not met his standards, even if we didn't notice. The project was done professionally and remained on budget. I highly recommend Stafford and Son!

Everything went smoothly to us as the home owners because Tom took care of all details and any situation that came up that was not running as smoothly as he thought it should. Foundation was put in, two rooms plus bath was installed, exterior walls, siding roofing all went in as planned/scheduled. Tom has installers do the interior walls, trim, paint, carpet. Tom was very caring on the type of work that was being done in our home, checked every day. Tom is very precise on details and keeping his workers following his rules. Caring, trusting. Kept within budget and schedule. Would recommend highly for any addition.
Description of Work: Added two story addition with a bedroom and a bathroom in our home for my mother. Job took about four months. Worked with Tom Jr.
