Excellent experience with Poor Folks. Received a competitive quote and they were happy to give me a quote containing three different options (tree removal, raise canopy, individual limbs). When the crew showed up they quickly took care of the job (made difficult due to the tree's location next to the house) in a safe and efficient manner. Good communication with the team's supervisor and he made sure everything went well. Clean up was thorough. Recently, we have been through an extremely rainy year and they have a lot of work backed up so please keep this in mind and try to plan ahead. I'll use this company again.

They came and gave us a reasonable estimate. The time frame for the work was agreed but they actually came out sooner than anticipated. Within about 1 hour they had the limbs down, carried the brush away, carried the wood to my wood pile and cleaned up the area. Great job, nice crew - I will use them again.

Let me put this in context. I have used this company on two separate occasions and their work was good. However, in summer 2015, and on my recommendation, my neighbor contracted Poor Folk's Tree service to remove some trees and limbs. I approached the foreman and since they were there asked if they would take down a limb on a tree in my yard. It was at the end of a hot day and stupidly I paid a representative $150 in advance because I thought there was a level of trust. They have never completed the job nor responded to a phone voice mail when I enquired about when the job was to be completed. Suffice to say i will not be using them again.

Contractor did not show or call to reschedule. I have NO tolerance for no shows. I can appreciate that things come up in a business, but there is no excuse for not calling to reschedule. This job would have been in the $3000 range, but I guess they don't need the business.

Get your proposal in writing. I was quoted $400 by the crew working another job down the street to cut down a tree in my yard. When they didn't arrive Tues afternoon, as planned, I went down to check on things and give them my cell number. The owner happened to be there and said they would get to it Weds AM. Didn't happen. On Thursday morning, I saw the owner again down the street. He said he could not remove the tree for $400, as previously agreed, but could for $800. A handshake isn't what it used to be.

I honestly can't remember the price but I called several tree guys and was most comfortable with Tom. You could tell he knew what he was doing and was very professional. He worked with us and helped us decide what our options were. In the end he got the job done in the time frame he said he would. I would definitely recommend Tom and I have done just that. A++

He gave me a great price, his workers were very courteous, and he fit me in the same day.
Description of Work: Tom, the owner came out on the Monday morning and gave me a great price. I have a 40 inch oak stump that was rotting. I needed to have it cut down, and he said they could do it and bring a front loader out and take care of if the same day. He removed my concrete planter that was on the stump. His men took the flowers that were planted out gently. Five of his men lifted the concrete planter off and carried it to where I needed them to place it. Then, they cut the stump down flat, and they cleaned up everything as if no one was ever there.

The crew was very hard working. The company has all the needed equipment. The trees were removed without damaging the house or the lawn. I have a couple minor quibbles though. They said they filled in holes left by falling segments of trunk with topsoil, when what they actually did was fill them with mulch and sprinkle an inch of topsoil over that. They said they needed payment 1/2 as a check and 1/2 as credit card (as opposed to 100% credit card) because and quot;checks clear faster than credit cards, and quot; but the credit charge posted days before the check (and it doesn't really make sense anyway). These weren't big deals, and I will use their services again, but I think they could have been a little more forthright about these things.

They were very good. They were exceptionally careful with the large trees. They were careful with how they moved their large machines. The clean up was exceptional. I felt like the price was very good for the quality of work. They were very responsive to our call. We heard about them in the newspaper and they got back to us quickly. We have used them again, and will continue to use them.

They did a really great job. We had a huge storm come through and they got out here in a timely manner. They were very busy during that time. They were professional and the guys clearly knew what they were doing. They worked really hard. It was very impressive. We paid $2,000 for the first service and $1,200 last August. They were fast and cleaned up. They were terrific.
Description of Work: We used Poor Folks Tree Service to remove trees. We had a tree fall on our house nearly a year ago. They came in and pulled the tree off the house and did all the removal. We used them again in August, 2011 when the hurricane came through. This time the tree landed on the house and then rolled off so they didn't have to pull it off the house.

They did a good job. They missed a branch and it was hard to get it back. The branch was hanging over the house which became an issue. They did come back to do the work, but I had to call them about half a dozen times. They cleaned up the place before they left. I would use their services in the future also.

To sum up, the actual cutting down of the trees, grinding of the stump, etc., was done in a professional manner. However, taking down the logs (known as and quot;blocksand quot;) resulted in my front lawn especially being trashed. I am very dissatisfied and upset with the resulting condition of both back and front grass, which had before been one of the nicest lawns on my block, after Poor Folks was through with the job. The job work order specified that the blocks were to come down by pulley (the estimator later claimed that this only applied to the back yard tree, but that was not specified on the work order), but instead, the crew allowed huge blocks to fall from from great heights (both trees were very tall pines) and cause large gashes and ruts in the lawn. By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late. When I asked the crew why they had done the job that way, I was given two answers: 1) to save time; and 2) because the estimator did not tell them to use pulleys. I would like to note that the reason why I hired Poor Folks was because they not only submitted a reasonable estimate (and I did get several estimates from other tree services), but because they had removed a tall pine on the property line I share with a neighbor about a year-and-a-half ago, and we were both very pleased with their work. They DID use a pulley for the blocks for that job, ground the stump, and left the area pretty much undamaged. The company offered to top soil the areas of lawn damaged. The crew had tried filling in the deep ruts with debris left over from the job. My grass mowing man told me that grass wouldn't reseed in that medium, so I asked Bill (the estimator) to have the debris removed and to add top soil. It took them a week to follow up on this, but they did do so. I then paid my mowing man to do a quick-seed spread over the damaged areas. My lawn currently looks like No Man's Land. Additionally, a couple of minor points that I feel contribute to the lack of professionalism of the current Poor Folks crew: 1) when they arrived at about 8 a.m., no-one came to my door (I went out to talk to them when I saw them arrive), and no-one introduced himself to me, or told me who the crew foreman was (they did have one, I later learned), so I think they have something to learn in the area of customer relations, since I felt almost totally ignored; 2) a stone bird bath in the back yard near the tree to come down had been removed by dumping it on its side elsewhere in my yard, and was not replaced until a week later, when I asked them to; 3) I now have a large grease stain on my driveway from their equipment, where previously I had no stains. It should also be noted that they left some very large blocks overnight on my front lawn because their forklift broke, and that the reason why they were on my property until about 5 pm was because some other equipment wasn't functioning, so they had to perform some heavy tasks manually. Why then, I wondered, did they come to my property without properly-functioning equipment? In general, I was very disappointed with Poor Folks' performance this time compared to my previous experience. I would most definitely not hire them again to come onto my property, even if they were the last tree service in Hampton Roads, nor would I recommend them to any friend of mine. I feel that they were careless and negligent in executing the job, and the damage they did to my lawn was entirely unnecessary and could have been avoided. I did pay them in full for the job, and I even added a tip for each of the crew, who did work hard to complete the job, because the trees are indeed gone and so what I really regret is the very poor supervision and, I have to assume, lack of thorough training that could have made a difference.
Description of Work: Removed a very tall pine tree that had been struck by lightning in my back yard, and remove a very tall, forked pine tree in my front yard. The back yard tree was removed by the tree being climbed and cut down in stages by that individual. The front yard tree was removed by an individual in a basket crane. Additionally, some dead branches in nearby trees were removed in the back yard and all other shrubs growing around the front yard tree were removed. The back yard tree was cut down as low as possible and the stump remains. The front yard tree stump was ground out and the mulch removed.
