I hired them without soliciting any other estimates because I was impressed with their service when they replaced my gas furnance during the winter of 2009. They are an excellent company to do business with. They came the same day I called to provide an estimate and they had the unit replaced the next day. Their sales personnel are polite and courteous and did not try and sell me the cadilac of AC units or Furnances, just the basic unit to meet my requirements. Their contract is straight forward and guarntees that you will be pleased with their services. I elected to take out one of their yearly service agreements they call and remind you that it is due and they have always showed up at the scheduled time. They also give you a follow up call after the work is complete to make sure everything went ok.
Description of Work: I had Classic One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning replace my outside AC unit in the summer of 2010 and my gas furnance in the winter of 2009.

The technician came out to performs one of the semi-annual clean and inspect on the two units that are in our new house. I continued the service as the initial technician in our previous house was very courteous, and it appeared that his desire was to help me keep my units working at the best possible efficiency. While performing the maintenance, he pointed out some pretty basic repairs that I felt were a bit high, but I agreed to them none the less as I didn't have time to do them myself (one was putting a new termination on a wire (5? & 5 minutes worth of work) and replacing a relay ($20 and another 15 minutes worth of work)). He mentioned that I may need a new breaker in the future, but said it would be good for now.I left the house for about an hour and got a call from my wife saying that the technician said the breaker indeed did need to be replaced, so knowing what a breaker costs and the technician not telling my wife that it would be additional $$, I said yes thinking that it would be included in the cost of the other repairs since they were such minor repairs by anyone's standards. When I arrived at home, the technician was just finishing up and stated that my bill would be $700+, and I asked him why it was so much more than what he originally estimated. He stated that the breaker replacement drove the cost to just about double the original replacement/repair of the two, very minor components. I started to feel like I was being taken advantage of somewhat (or maybe my wife was taken advantage of somewhat), and I asked him to remove the breaker and to not charge me for it thinking that it was probably only worth approximately $50 at most (including time and hardware). I paid the original estimate, which I am still kicking myself for today, but then went to Home Depot, picked up the EXACT same breaker that he was going to intall for ~$350, paid full price, and was only set back $11.52. I installed the breaker, the units were back up and running, and life was good again (except for the hole in my wallet).I called to cancel my "express" service agreement with them and there was no desire to apologize for the service, the cost, or the taking advantage of an unknowing wife while the husband was gone. The only response was that the company desires you to stay on for at least a year to get the "full" advantage of the monthly agreement. I'm not sure what it was that I got out of the deal, except what the finance manager told me was a "free" cleaning and inspection (not sure how it was free when I was paying $40+/month for the agreement which included a "free" clean and inspect, but he was proud of it.I have decided to shift to Geothermal, and have done my research this time. I look forward to not needing all the maintenance and reducing my bills.
Description of Work: Clean & Inspect of a package unit, and a split unit. This turned into some minor maintenance for a hefty price.

It was Saturday night... 98 degrees outside w/ high humidity. I called around and left messages with AC companies. 1 Hour actually answered the phone (Live person). They sent a rep within an hour. He replaced the Capacitor on my 15 year old AC system. It worked for the night... next day it failed again. They came back out and assessed the outdoor unit needed to be replaced. We decided to replace the whole system. Great service!!! new AC was in the next day. It was a bit pricey... but totally worth it. I would definitely recommend their service. Tim the shop Manager was great!

Prior to the technician coming out, I'd taken the electrical cover off of the unit and discovered that the wire from the contactor had burned off at the lead of the capacitor ( which had been installed two weeks earlier by another HVAC company ). The wire was arcing on the side of the capacitor so I cut off the breaker and also pulled the outside breaker. John C. arrived within the first hour of the appointment window and was very professional from start to finish. I explained to him that the capacitor was only two weeks old and he showed me the signs of a cheap, defective part. He replaced the bad capacitor, cut the unit back on and took an amperage reading. While he did emphasize to me that my unit was nearing the end of it's life cycle, there was no 'buddy, you got big problems' speech. He took an infrared temperature gauge inside and gave me the temperature readouts on several of the output vents, explaining to me that what they were putting out was pretty good considering the age of the unit. He didn't mind one bit me watching him work; he explained what he was doing quite well; he answered all of my questions with easy to understand answers. While yes, the capacitor is only about a $20 part that I could have changed myself, I got information about my entire system that really helps me to make future decisions about replacing each component; things I wouldn't have known just by changing out the capacitor. So far, the repair has held up and the unit is cooling as well as could be expected.
Description of Work: Our central air conditioning unit had been serviced by another company two weeks earlier and had again ceased to cool. It was also making a noise generally associated with some sort of electrical malfunction.

As reported above, all is now well.
Description of Work: I had had a negative experience initially with this company back in January/February. After submitting a negative report, the owner contacted me and was very apologetic and offered to make things "right" again. He had a serviceman come and check out my AC/Heating system and ensure that it was fully and satisfactorily operational. I appreciate his effort to restore a better customer relationship and am now pleased to report that I am very satisfied with the company at this point.

Their customer service is great. They were very prompt and they were willing to work with us with coming out for subsequent visits to see what was going on and if maybe it was something they didn't address. They came out and looked at the unit and didn't charge us for doing a little more work to make sure it was okay, It is still not working correctly and it stills leaks but it is working better than it was. The customer service and promptness were great; they just didn't really address the issue. I would use them again and I have recommended them to two other people.
Description of Work: I used Classic Air's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning to do an assessment on a malfunctioning air conditioning unit. They determined the leak was caused by incompetent work done by the original installer on the feeder for all of the air lines going into the rooms. They build something out of sheet metal to fix the problem. It didn't really fix the problem so they had to come back out again this past summer.

The technician arrived within 4 hours of the inital call and the technician was both friendly and proficient in finding and solving the problem. The capacitor had blown through excessive current being drawn due to the very high temperatures and the age of the system. The capacitor was replaced within 30 minutes and the system has run uninterupted since. Technician also suggested improvements to help cosy the unit through until a replacement is installed (unit is 28 yrs old)

We suspected something fishy when they said it was a cracked heat exchanger and told them we would get back to them. They made us sign a statement that basically said we would all probably die from carbon monoxide poisoning if we didn't replace our system. Thanks to some HVAC friends, we figured out that it was actually a bad standing pilot valve, which we replaced for about $150, and yes, we are all still alive, 9 months later. These guys are either terribly incompetent or dishonest.
Description of Work: Our upstairs heater stopped working, and we suspected that the pilot light was out. To make a long story short, two of their technicians came to our house and both said that we had a cracked heat exchanger and we would need a new system.

I am sorry to hear about your experience with us 9 months ago. Something we always appreciate is when a customer provides us with constructive feedback. If there is a way we can improve our service, we appreciate it when you, the homeowner, provides information to enhance our performance. We like to think that when we come to your home, it is as a partnership, and we try to work together to provide the best information possible at the best value. When our technician arrived at your home, he discovered what he thought was a cracked heat exchanger, which could allow deadly amounts of carbon monoxide into the air you and your family breathe. Due to the serious nature of carbon monoxide (you cannot smell, taste, or see it) we ask our customers to sign a Safety First Waiver stating that they fully understand the dangers ,including death, if they use their furnace with a crack in the heat exchanger. Our goal at that point is to immediately address the safety issue. This is not to say that there were not any additional problems with your system but safety is ALWAYS our first concern. Anytime we come to someone’s home, we strive to be 100% perfect each and every time. From past experiences, we have realized that this is not possible. However, in our attempt to safeguard against from a possible mistake we offer an in home no charge second opinion, by a second/different technician. In your case both technicians, based on independent evaluations, had the same diagnostic. Our office attempted to contact you the following Monday (October 25th at 10:35 AM) to discuss options as far as repair and to answer any questions you might have had at the time. With our dedication to 100% satisfaction, we also performed another “happy check” at 4:34pm, that same day to ensure that you and your family were doing ok and had no other questions. If we dropped the ball, we would have loved to been able to speak to you about it at that time and still would like to address your concerns even though it has been nine months since our visit. I am concerned that the crack in the heat exchanger still exists and would like the opportunity to discuss this with you. Our trained technicians have the ability to show you, with a video camera, the exact location of the crack. We have attempted to contact you, but have been unable to reach you. Please feel free to reach out to us so we may discuss this with you and find a solution that is acceptable to you.

They came out, looked at the furnace and told me what I needed. They also conned me into joining their comfort club, which brought the price down from $700 to $601. It took them a week and a half to get a part sent from New Jersey. After they left, I noticed that water was coming from my home. I called them and they told me that they don't work on pipes. This whole time it was the middle of winter and I was without heat. I told the man that I thought it was a rip off to charge me so much for such a cheap part to replace. He went in to a long monologue about what actually is a rip off these days. He was terribly rude. I wanted to go ahead and cancel the comfort club membership, and the man told me I couldn't do that until the next month, and that I would have to submit something in writing. I was incredibly appalled with their rudeness and I wouldn't use them if they were last company left on this Earth.

We are sorry and concerned over your recent comments. I would like to apologize for the lack of professionalism you encountered with our staff. Hopefully you noticed, by other member’s reports, the attitude you encountered is not typical with how we conduct business. Our promise is that we will provide “Can’t lose Service” to all customers and we strive to create lasting relationships, not just transactions. One of the major components of the “Can’t Lose Service” proposition is the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee that is printed on the back of every service invoice. It states, “If you are not 100% satisfied with the service we have provided, we will refund all your money.” All anyone need do is bring to our attention their concern in a timely manner and we will attempt to resolve it to their 100% satisfaction or issue a refund. I am also concerned about the rating for responsiveness and punctuality. We responded the same day that you called, gave you a courtesy call when the technician was dispatched and showed up within the guaranteed time window as agreed. During our initial call we determined that a part was required. Unfortunately, due to the age of the system, the part was not available locally. We requested a “rush” shipment and we were able to install the part six days later. As far as the technical aspect of your concerns, we both sympathize and empathize with you. Any time we come to a home, the only acceptable level of service is “perfect.” This is why we choose not be a jack of all trades and declined to repair what you described as a plumbing problem. Our concern is that we could have been a cause for further delays and/or damage had we attempted to do a plumbers job and fix the water coming from your house. I know you mentioned that you would not call us again, and we respect your decision. We have tried reaching out to you to discuss this individual situation directly with you but unfortunately, we do not have a current phone number for you. Please contact us so we can discuss our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and offer you a personal apology.

They got me into a service contract and I spent all the money. When they left, I still had the problem. My experience was not good. They were very professional and courteous. I was so taken because they really pushed the service contract. I figured out that I had to go along with the service contract. Then the next thing they did was that they were ready to have me buy a thermostat. I told them that I was not going to buy that. They were always pushing me to buy this or that. I ended up telling them to go ahead and clean it out. The original problem that I wanted fixed was that the heating and the air conditioning ducts weren’t working real well and the heat wasn’t coming out. I still have the same problem. I don’t know if I paid them a lot or if that was a normal price. I don’t know about the quality because they went upstairs and cleaned my attic, but I don’t know if they did a good job. Their responsiveness was good. I have a contract with them for the rest of the year and I’m not going to call them again even though I have a contract. I just don’t trust them at this point.

Feedback is one of the most valuable tools our business has. It is always nice to hear the positive, but constructive feedback is what allows us to get better. Anytime we receive feedback, our first goal is to contact the customer so we can get a better idea of the area’s we could improve on. Our Happy Check calls are designed to flush out challenges but unfortunately the clients concerns were not brought to our attention when we spoke after the last service appoint on February 1, 2011. The true value to us, as a company, is when we reach the customer, and they are kind enough to share with us what areas we can improve on. Fortunately by way of Angie's list we ultimately were made aware of the customers concern. After a productive conversation with the customer, they allowed us the opportunity to perform a follow up service call. We have attempted to contact the customer following our most recent visit to ensure we not only met, but exceeded their expectations. At this time, we have not heard back from the customer, and trust that they are completely satisfied with our service. This feedback was invaluable to us and we appreciated the opportunity to display our commitment to 100% Customer satisfaction. Sometimes, a true test of a company is how they react in adverse conditions. In this case, initially we did not meet our own or our customers’ expectations, but hope that our follow up has been more in line with the customer’s expectations.

In a nutshell, it turned out to be like buying a car. I had them price two projects, a heating boiler replacement and a complete two zone HVAC install. Their initial price was very much market. However when it came to signing the documents we then had the adds that the salesman tried to include. I refused and we finally agreed on the original price. In parting he commented over his shoulder that I would have to do the boiler adds at the time we did the HVAC and that the HVAC would have to have all the adds as well. The adds do do make One Hour price competitive. The boiler install was most satisfactory. About a month or two after the install their customer service rep called to follow-up on the job. When I told her about how unhappy I was with this treatment she indicated the sales manager would give me a call. Suffice it to say 1) I recieved no call and that 2) I will not be giving One Hour my $20,000 HVAC install. A good installation ruined and a $20,000 job lost all by a salesman. I wonder why they are running adds trying to keep their installers employed during these slow times?????

We were disheartened to hear that the customer’s overall experience with us was negative. However, we are glad that the installation went well and that the customer was satisfied with it. We also appreciate the ‘A’ ratings for Responsiveness and Punctuality. As for the ‘C’ for price I was initially confused as the customer stated in his report that our price was competitive. The concern for the customer is that he felt that the price was competitive only after the loyalty discounts provided to members of our Comfort Club, which is a maintenance plan that allows our members to get a Precision Tune Up and various discounts. Comfort Club members receive an extra 5% loyalty bonus simply by being a member. The customer wanted the member pricing without actually becoming a member. His comment about our Comfort Advisor commenting that we would have to have the “adds” when he did the HVAC is simply our Comfort Advisor saying that he would need to become a member of our Comfort Club for the HVAC pricing to reflect member prices (this transaction only included replacing the boiler). I am disappointed in our follow-up after the installation. The customer obviously had concerns with his dealings with us and we should have done a better job reaching out to him regarding his concerns. I truly believe that had we addressed these concerns earlier that his rating would have been more favorable, as he did get a fair price and the system is operating to his satisfaction. We appreciate the feedback, both good and bad, as it helps us to refine and perfect our customer service.

I closed on a new home Friday and found after the fact that the heating unit was now blowing hot air. So I called Classic Air on Sunday and they responded with a technician coming out to the house within 2 hours of my initial call. Tim was very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. He checked my heating unit and gave me options for fixing and replacing. The unit is original to the home (21 years) and will need replacing, but I opted just to fix it and get it working for now. Tim also helped me (at no additional charge) lighting my pilot light on my water heater and checking out an issue with my gas fireplace. I will definitely use them again and I might have too if my A/C unit does not come on in the late spring.

After our attic flooded due to an incident with MSCO (see review), I called Classic Air's out to do some maintenance on our AC and find out what really was going on. First, they noticed our freon was very low. Rather than simply fill it back up like our previous maintenance company, they offerred to search for the leak. The price of that service was subtracted from the actual repair which was replacement of the condenser coil. During our consultation, they discussed many different options including replacing the furnace to qualify for a tax credit. We decided to only replace the coil, but we were warned that our compressor was suspect. During replacement of the coil, they went above and beyond. They also re-did a segment of the drain line so that if it did clog in the future, it would actually go out the drain pan instead of into my attic. The previous tech had also pointed out a few segments of the freon line that he did not like and they re-did those. The service also included a device to cut off the AC in the event of a future flood. Things worked great for a few weeks until my compressor failed. The gamble we took didn't pay off. Thankfully, they were out there that day to diagnose it, and in a couple more - had replaced it. Again, they went above and beyond. They provided a programmable thermostat and replaced the pad that the compressor was sitting on (old one was not level). They had pointed out the pad to me during their regular maintenance and the effect that could have. This was never mentioned to me by our previous company. In addition, I contracted with them to perform maintenance on my rental property. They very kindly coordinated with my tenants for me. They also discovered a gas leak in the furnace and repaired it. I was surprised as this unit was about 2 years old. My tenants have reported lower gas bills since the repair. I've avoided posting all through the summer thinking that there would be something else, but everything's been working great. Although they're a bit more pricy than others, I find that their professionalism and attention to detail is well worth it. Rather than ignore small problems until they become major ones, they gave me the information I needed to make an informed decision. I look forward to working with them more in the future.
Description of Work: First visit: Regular maintenance. During this, they identified a freon leak and later replaced the condenser coil. Secon visit: Replaced compressor.

Process started out well. Called them and even though the Angie's List reference earned a discount off the regular price, the company let me know that they were running a special on the service and that the cost was lower than the discounted regular price. Appointment was made for just a couple of days later and technician showed promptly. In the interim, the city inspector had looked at the gas system and identified a defective gas regulator. This information was passed to One Hour Air with the hopes that this deficiency would be fixed at the same time as the routine maintenance appointment. On the day of the appointment, the main office rep called and told me that the price for the replacement of the gas regulator would be $495. When I questioned the cost, I was given scant details on the work and when I pressed for a breakdown of the material and labor costs was told that the $495 was a flat fee and that they did not charge labor by the hour. I declined the work and subsequently called another company who replaced the gas regulator two days later for $160.

Response from Classic Air's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning
We appreciate your comments and value your input. While we pride ourselves on customer service we recognize that we are far from perfect and welcome the opportunity to learn from our experiences whenever possible. In your case we had a client who recognized and acknowledged the value in prompt courteous service and off season specials yet we failed in effectively communicating value in our repair pricing. It was clearly a misunderstanding on our part as to what was identified as a problem by the city inspector and what repairs were required to rectify the condition. We subsequently learned after the fact that a piece of a part needed to be replaced rather than the entire part that we were quoting, our mistake. We certainly respect your decision to call for another opinion and we are pleased that your situation was resolved, albeit by another company. As a backstop to our goal of 100% customer satisfaction we do provide money back guarantees as well as prompt service delivered by clean, safe, and reliable technicians who are criminally background checked and drug free. Our records indicate that you did not incur any expense as a result of this call. If this information is not accurate please contact us for a full refund. In the future, if you incur a problem with your HVAC equipment we would welcome the opportunity to provide you with a level of service that would warrant a much higher grade than this experience produced.

I was given a repair window time-frame from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Timothy arrived at 3:00 pm and he was polite, professional, and knowedgeable. He quickly figured out that I had a bad capacitor and replaced it within minutes. He then checked my entire system, gauged my freon and cleaned my compressor unit. Total time at my home less than an hour. I highly recommend this company to anyone who has issues with their A/C. They are outstanding.

Originally they were called out to fix our lower level a/c unit that quit on the hottest day of the year. It turned out to be a capacitor. They changed it out and added some R22 refrigerant. The technician stated that our outside unit was in bad shape. The coils were damaged and the unit was on borrowed time. Although I liked that it could be repaired, I knew that the equipment was in bad shape and that we would eventually end up replacing it. I asked them to send someone out the next week for discussion. They came out next week and did a complete survey. I ended up purchasing a 2 ton 14 SEER unit in order to qualify for the tax / Virginia Natural Gas credits. The techs showed up the very next day and replaced the unit and gave my wife a complete review of the new system and operations. This is a class act operation. No hard sell, no horse trading, no add ons. Just straight forward getting business done. They also credited the original $422 repair to my bill - a lot of operations wouldn't dream of doing that. I'll recommend this operation to all of my friends and associates contemplating HVAC work or repairs.
Description of Work: They replaced our 18 year old original equipment heating and air conditioning units.
