Awesome. Our A/C went out last night on a 102 degree day. A bad scenario. I called around to different companies in the area. All of them said they could schedule us several days out. One said a week. These guys said 45 minutes. Joe, the technician came out on time. Very Friendly. Superb knowledge and fixed everything within a half hour. I think the price was reasonable considering the speed and quality of their service. Very pleased. We have a new go to business.

Overall, great experience and pleased to finally find a competent company where the OWNER stands behind his brand. I researched and shopped around on Angie’s List knowing the previous company I had used recently to repair my AC unit was obviously not interested in fixing the problem but rather prolonging the issue knowing I would have to return needing additional services -added 1lb of Freon at the cost of $242/lb (PLUS the service call fee). I called Applied Mechanical and found their flat rate fee to be higher than most –in fact, almost double that of others, but after 10 minutes on the phone with the owner, Steve I was leaning toward his company. I continued to call around but ended up calling back a short time later and decided to go with Steve –he was honest and forthright and also guaranteed the work by at least 60 days. I also based my decision on the other two dozen happy customers. 2-months may not seem like much but when asking the other companies about guaranteeing their work they immediately dismissed the idea. Fact is, three weeks after my most recent service/repair of $313. from another local company, it’s important to know they will return to correct the problem at no cost (assuming it is the same issue). Sadly, I can’t even get the previous company to acknowledge my email. Within one hour of making the appt one of the techs arrived from the shipyard -Joe. (Yes, the owner pulled him off another job) and diagnosed the problem within 20 or so minutes, replaced a $60 part and I was up and running for less than $200. More than I had hoped to have had to spend knowing I just shelled out over $300 less than a month ago.Not a lot of choice in the matter when it’s 95+ degrees out, especially when another company tried to convince me over the phone it was the “coil” and would cost at least $1200. Not sure how you diagnose a problem over the phone. Nonetheless, I was very pleased with the expertise, professionalism and FAST service of Joe and Steve. I will definitely use Applied Mechanical in the future.

They are the only ones that could come over that day. I had called around and the next closest appointment I could get was a full week away. Joe was very pleasant and accommodating. He thoroughly explained everything he was doing and also called before he came and gave a timeframe. It was also great because he would call the owner and discuss strategies for fixing the problem.
Description of Work: We had no air conditioning upstairs and they found that there was a faulty contact switch. They sent a technician named Joe to replace the contact switch.

Dave, Cory, and Steve arrived as scheduled to install two exhaust fans, one in each of two upstairs bathrooms. I had previously purchased the fans as recommended by Steve during an earlier phone conversation. They worked diligently for 5-1/2 hours installing the fans, the ductwork, and the roof vents. Upon completion, I was very satisfied with the quality of their work. It's been about a week now, and no roof leaks have been detected, with there having been substantial rains since the installation. I'm very satisfied with my experience with Applied Mechanical Resources, Inc. and will definitely be recommending them to others.

We had serious problems with our two A/C plants, some were due to errors in the original installation, others due to inefficient maintenance by well advertised companies. We are very glad we found Applied Mechanical Resources in Angie's List. It is a very professional company; they do outstanding work, completely honest and efficient. The working crew is polite, friendly, and always concerned about keeping the house clean. I would recommend Applied Mechanical Resources without reservation, because I know everyone will be as satisfied with their service as we are. I also joined Angies List this past weekend after my air conditioner decided to go on strike on Saturday afternoon leaving my house at 81 degrees on Monday morning and very uncomfortable. After researching the available reports I went with APPLIED Mechanical. I called first thing this morning and Taryn had a tech at my house within 45 minutes (Mike). Mike was not only on time he was early and he spent the next two and half hours trouble shooting the issue and didn't mind at all that I followed him literally from place to place so that I could watch what he was doing and ask questions which he answered and explained in detail what he was doing and why. The problem turned out to be that my emergency reset switch was faulty. Mike is a great representative of Allied and I absolutely would not hesitate to recommend Allied to my neighbors/friends and BTW I already have. I truly cannot say enough how extemely pleased I was with the service.

VERY PLEASED! In another August heat wave, my house is handling the scorching temperatures better, and areas in my house that get hotter in the late afternoon are significantly cooler.
Description of Work: My AC stopped working in the middle of a major hot spell. I joined Angie's list for help in finding a good company. I chose this one after seeing Angie's List's A rating and because it had also won a Best in Hampton Roads award. I called and explained problem to the friendly receptionist. And, I kid you not--the repairman Mike was at my front door in LESS THAN 30 MINUTES!! Although it took him a while to locate the problem (broken power switch located in my attic), I was only charged the agreed-upon $125 diagnostic fee for that. Switch was fixed, freon added (1/2 pound), and 2 air filters changed (from my stash), and some basic but helpful "how you can make your AC unit last longer" advice, all for $193. Never once did Mike express the need for a new unit, even though mine is 13 years old. He just did all he could to get mine up and running. I am very impressed with the entire service. I will definitely use this company again and will recommend it to friends.

We were impressed with Steve's knowledge of the principles involved in an HVAC system. Of the two estimates we obtained, Steve's plan was the simplest and the most effective for our needs. It was also the least expensive option. Not only did his crew of three do excellent work in a professional manner, but Steve also fixed another problem he found in our old furnace without charging us extra. The complete installation took about 7 hours and we are thrilled with the result. It is so very quiet in the house now that we can hardly tell when the unit is running. We have a new HVAC company - wouldn't call anyone else!
Description of Work: Our 50+ year old home needed a quieter more efficient way of cooling the ~1600 sq. ft. after our A/C compressor quit working. The fan behind the air return has been annoyingly noisy since it was installed by another HVAC company (who we do not use any longer) about 10 years ago. Steve designed a system that relocated the return to another part of the house and also allows for a future upgrade of the heating system. He and his team of three workers removed the old A/C, took out the old return, replaced the A/C unit with a 2.5 ton heat pump complete with gravel pad, replaced/re-routed some duct work, installed a new grille, and repaired a leak in a pan under the n-coil (a job not in the contract) to increase efficiency of air circulation.

The air conditioning unit in my attic was leaking water through the ceiling and into the master bedroom. I called Applied Mechanical and they were able to make an emergency service call within 90 minutes. The two technicians identified the problem and provided a range of options for addressing the situation. Once I determined how I wanted to proceed, they replaced the damaged parts and fixed the problem that was causing the leak. The technicians were prompt, courteous, and professional. I was pleased with the work and am planning to ask them to come out and give me an estimate for additional work.

They were very good. They came out promptly when we started having problems. Neither they, nor the first company got it right the first time, but I don't think anybody would. They had to do the most obvious thing first and that didn't work. They were telling me this is down and we can do something temporary, but the compressors are gone and need a new one. They were very prompt and very courteous. They explained well. They were very accommodating to try and get someone else here and put in a quick fix. They explained in layman terms about what was going on. Before they came out the first time, they explained what the fee was for that. The next time they came out, they had already told me the price of the quick fix. Those were very reasonable. The gentleman who is coming out on Thursday will sit down and discuss what his recommendations are for the replacement. They are very polite. If there is a question about something, they immediately go to whoever is in the field that can help you out.

It had been estimated to take 4 hours, but they finished in 2.5 hours. No freon was needed. Dave was nice enough to take 5-10 minutes to get our gas fireplace working. Even so, the original price of $250 seemed very high compared to other ads I had seen. Even after reducing the price to $225, and believing I would get the $50 rebate that the gas company was offering for people who got a tuneup of their system, the price still seemed too expensive. What still bothers me very much was that Dave said there needed to be a particular number (invoice number?) on the gas company rebate form that I had downloaded. He said he would take the form, fill in the required information, and mail it to the gas company. The gas company broshure had said it could take up to 8 weeks to process the rebate. So as time went by, I assumed that Applied Mechanical Resources had sent in the require information. Finally, after 2 months I called the gas company. They said they had not received the form and it was now too late to send it in. I called Applied Mechanical Resources, on January 18, 2011 and spoke to Delores. She checked with Dave and he told her that he had sent in the form. She said she would check with the gas company to see what could be done and call me back the next day. She never called me back. Two weeks later, on February 2, 2011, I called her and she said she would like to help me but her hands were tied. (After I asked her for the name of the owner of the company, she said it was her son, Stephen). I feel that since I had given the rebate form to the company and the employee said he would take care of it, that it is their responsibility to pay me the $50 rebate. She now says I was supposed to send a copy of the invoice to the gas company. I do not remember seeing this or being told about this by Dave. I am now left with bad feelings.
Description of Work: Dave and another guy came out to our home and inspected our heating and airconditioning system. No repairs were needed.

Response from Applied Mechanical Resources Inc
The Member contacted us for a Precision Tune-Up (PTU) of his heating and cooling system. PTU’s are $250 and always quoted in advance, so the Member knew the price before any work was started. We estimate that it will take about 4 hours for a single man to complete the PTU. We dispatched a technician and a helper at 9:00am and completed the job at 12:30pm. 2 men x 3.5 hours each = 7 hours of labor. The PTU actually took 3 hours longer than we budgeted and we did not charge any more than we quoted. Our PTUs include up to 1 pound of refrigerant, if needed, at no additional charge. During this PTU it was determined that the heating and cooling system did not need refrigerant. The member demanded, from the technician, 1 pound of refrigerant. After the technician refused to give the 1 pound of refrigerant, the Member demanded a $25 discount. Acting in good faith the technician discounted the PTU $25. The technician also serviced the Member’s gas logs, which were inoperable. The technician was able to make the gas logs operable by cleaning the thermocouple. The technician also instructed the Member on how to light the gas logs and also gave the member written instructions on lighting the gas logs. The Member was not charged for this service. The Member also asked the technician to complete a rebate form from Virginia Natural Gas. The technician agreed to do this and mailed the form after the invoice was created by the office the following day. Three months later the Member contacts us and complains that he did not receive the $50 rebate from Virginia Natural Gas. The Member demanded that we give him $50, or he would write an unfavorable report about us on Angie’s List. We refused to pay the $50 and accept this coercive action. The Member has made no complaints about the quality of our work. We were not paid in full for work we quoted in advance. We serviced the gas logs at no additional charge and processed Virginia Natural Gas paperwork as a favor to the Member. We have been very fair and accommodating.

Steve came out and did a thorough evaluation of the space volume and existing system. He recommended a 2 1/2 ton system and his proposal was really detailed and professional, to include pictures and specific commitments on what he was going to do. No detail was left out. I tried to negotiate on the price, as Steve was the highest bid I took, but at the end of the day, I wanted to be able to bank on a professional job and support after the install. Steve's team did the work in 2 days and it was just what I expected. Very professional and thorough. They cleaned everything up after themselves and when they left, my system worked perfectly. When I did notice that I had a drain pipe that was not put back in place perfectly, they came out that very day, made the fix, and did the right thing. If I was going to spend this kind of money again, I'd call Steve back in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: My upstairs heating and AC system had been giving me problems for several years. The existing system was a 2 tons system and didn't get the temp below the high 70's even when it was only in the 80's out. The heating system had to be repaired at least twice a year. Steve's crew replaced my entire upstairs heating and AC system and replaced the heat pump with a 2 1/2 ton unit.

A/C died on Sunday night. Monday morning, called the first company on Angie's list, they said, "Be there Wednesday." Called AMR (next on Angie's List) and they said they would be there no later than Tuesday morning but may be able to come sooner and would call me if so. Two hours later, they were at my house. Repaired the unit in 10 minutes. Such a pleasant team too! They gave me a quick explanation of what went wrong and what they fixed. Tonight we sleep with air conditioning! I'll definitely call these guys again! (And you've just GOT to enjoy their dispatcher Deloris! She's great fun!)

Everything from the estimate meeting through the final installation and follow-up was very professional. The Engineer who provided the estimate was very thorough and explained all the options and what work was required. He was very patient with all our questions and worked us into the schedule as quickly as possible. The 2 technicians arrived on time each day (2 days) and were very polite and courteous. They cleaned up after themselves and took time to explain the new unit and how best to care for it. The Engineer returned on the final day to make sure everything was done according to plan and to see if I had any other questions. Finally, the office manager filed the entire manufacturer's warranty information for us and then took time to come by the house and drop off all the final documentation and paperwork. Applied Mechanical provided superior service and workmanship which is not easy to find in one vendor. Also, compared to the other estimates I received, they were very competitive on price.

There is nothing bad to say about this company, Steve Stephenson, the owner provided a complete and accurate estimate unlike some of the other "A" rated Angies List contractors who I received estimates from their representatives, who were basically salesman. Steve and his lead technician Dave, worked with me in the installation of a completely new Gas HVAC unit. They worked with my desires for the installation, completed the work on time, took pride in their work, provided guidance in working the unit, and Delores (the office mgr) completed all the necessary paper work for the receipt of the pertinent rebates from Trane.

We were initially surprised at the price of $250 that was quoted. But after Dolores from Applied Mechanical Resources explained that it would be a 3-4 hour job and that the airconditioning and heating should not need a further check for about 2 years, we realized that the cost was actually cheaper than what we were paying before. Previously, we had had our airconditioning and heating checked twice yearly, the cost ranged from $90 to $120 each visit and it was never longer than 45minutes. As both Dolores and Keith the technician explained, most firms limit the technicians to a certain time, which precludes them from checking out the system thorougly. Keith took approximately 3-1/2 hours and thoroughly cleaned everything. My husband was astounded at the amount of gunk that came out of our air conditioning coils.
Description of Work: A check up of our airconditioning and heating unit involved the following. Chemical cleaning and outdoor and indoor coils, primary drain pan and blowing out the primary and secondary drain lines. Air flow increased from 310 cfm on medium speed to 408 cfm on high speed. Eliminated a small amount of mold on inside pipes. Found refrigerant to be sufficient, but if further refrigerant is needed it will be added up to l pound with no charge to us.

called friday, the lady doris was awesome, super nice and sent the guy out saturday to look at our not working AC. at first he was going to fix just the short in the wire, but as he tried to do that by trimming the wire, the wire was very old and corroded badly the whole way up. also I saw that what he told me was the "disconnect" looked like it was going to catch my house on fire. we went ahead and had the disconnect and whip(wire) replaced. It was MUCH to my delight!!!! we just bought the house a year ago and I thought he was going to tell me I needed a new AC. I feel much safer and my house is cooler.
