I do not usually do reviews, but I do value other peoples reviews, so I figured I need to start contributing. We have recently moved (hence the moving company) so I have called out numerous companies to help with jobs. This is the only company that I have complaints about. I called a couple of weeks before I needed the job done and was able to get my second choice of requested times for a weekend move. Someone came out within a couple of days to survey the items that were being moved and presented me with a quote. We were not moving any boxes, just big furniture. We planned to do any tearing down/putting together that was necessary, and really only cared if a few specific pieces got moved... a piano and a very large armoire were the only 2 items we felt we couldn't move ourselves. The consultant estimated this would be a 5 hour job and quoted a price of $785. This seemed long and high to me since we had used similar type companies in previous moves and had never paid that much to have our entire house loaded onto a truck (a job that took about 7 hours by a couple of fast moving guys. I asked about an hourly rate and was quoted $350 for 2 hours and $120 for each additional hour. If you do the math, 5 hours going this route does not add up to $785. We ended up agreeing to the hourly rates with a cap at $785... once again, I could not imagine how this job would take 5 hours! My assumption at this point was that they would be slow to ensure the 5 hours, but since they got so many high reviews on Angie's list we decided to stick with them. They showed up on time... even a little early... and seemed pleasant enough, the furniture was wrapped in plastic and handled well (for the most part), but they turned out to be the slowest, laziest workers I have ever seen (and we have used this type of company at least 5 times)!! Of the three man crew, one guy never left the back of the truck... just waited for furniture to arrive so he could place it properly... he did more waiting than placing. The other two would come in the house and take a least a minute or two looking at the furniture before they even started to move it, then would slowly meander out to the truck. After getting the piece on the truck, they would spend another couple minutes watching the guy arrange before moving on to another piece. They would take a 5 minute smoke/phone break every 2-3 pieces. After about an hour and a half they had only loaded about half of the furniture (which did not include any of the pieces we needed assistance with) and then told my husband they couldn't get it all on the truck (which was only half full) so they were going to unload and come back. Now we were stuck keeping them over the 2-3 hours because they hadn't moved the items we needed help with. Once they got to the other house (a mile away) they sat in their truck for at least 15 minutes... doing nothing!! My husband finally went out and started unloading our dining room chairs. After 4 hours they had finally loaded the second load and placed the piano in our new house. They then started discussing what they were going to do with the armoire that we wanted upstairs. It was determined that this crew would not be able to complete the task so they would terminate at this point with plans to come back with 6 guys on Monday or Tuesday for around a 60 charge. We ended up paying $650 for 4.5 hours of work and a large armoire waiting in the garage. That armoire is still in our garage and we have not heard a word back from them!
Description of Work: Three men were requested to move our larger pieces of furniture from one house to another house that was located less than a mile away.

Response from ABSOLUTE MOVING COMPANY
First of all, I gave her a flat rate price because I was going to send 4-5 guys to move their huge furniture. In a flat rate situation I send extra manpower. This particular job I did an in-home estimate and then left them with a flat rate price. They called and said they only needed 3 men and would like an hourly rate instead of the flat rate. I told them we could Cap it at $785.00 and do it hourly and which ever was cheapest we would honor. They were happy with that. The job only ended up being $650.00, not the $785.00. On moving day we arrived, did what we were told and when we got down to the last piece a HUGE armoire (weighing 500-600 lbs), the 3 men she ordered couldn't manpower it up the stairs. They put it in the garage and I told her we would come back with more men the next day to move it upstairs. When we couldn't get there in the early morning she got mad at me, I told her I would do it. I will still do it at no charge if she wants...she told me not to bother. The problem here is that I have 20 years experience in the moving industry. I know what it takes to move certain pieces of furniture, but she thought she knew better and only needed 3 men instead. The fault lies squarely on her, she reduced the people I was going to send thinking it would take less time. In the end it didn't work out like she though and she's mad at me. I don't like unhappy customers and I strive to do all I can to rectify the issues.

I was looking for movers to help with several large pieces of furniture during my move (bed, futon, TV stand). I lived on the fourth floor of an apartment building with no elevator. Absolute Moving gave me the best quote for the job ($300 for 2 hours with 3 men) and understood I was only looking for two hours worth of work. The movers showed up early and understood exactly what I wanted. In the 1 hour I had budgeted for moving items out of my old place, they had loaded up all of my furniture and every single box. They even offered to help me load bags of groceries into my car. They finished the job 30 minutes ahead of schedule at my new place. I would definitely use them again.

Jimmy and Earl called at the appointed moment, arrived 20 minutes later and hauled all of the heavy stuff with cheerful aplomb. They worked quickly and efficiently. No chips, dents or breaks. They were both experienced and just nice folks. They got the job done in 3 hours and charged me less than a third of their estimate!!!
Description of Work: Jeff Burdick gave us a very flexible bid to move from one house to another because we were not sure what we would be able to move. As it turned out, we moved much of the light stuff ourselves, just leaving the awful heavy stiff for them.

Overall the process was great. Absolute called us a few days ahead to let us know about what time they would show up to pack/load. The driver called the day of the move to let us know he had left the shop and was heading our way. Absolute showed up with six guys to do the packing and loading. They made short work of both and were done in about 3 1/2 hours. They had given us a price for packing up the kitchen and some miscellaneous items - which they stuck to even when we added in some extra items for them to pack. They had even brought another smaller truck along in case more space was required for our things. The team did a great job of wrapping up the furniture in shrink-wrap and moved our items with great care. The crew was easy to work with and very professional. Absolute arrived the next day at our new residence at the scheduled time with three guys. They went above and beyond their duties by moving some existing furniture in the house to the garage to make room for the furniture off the truck. It took about 3-4 hours for them to unload all the boxes, etc. from the truck to multiple rooms/levels in the house. We are still unpacking, but everything so far has been in the same shape as it was before it was moved. I would use these guys again.
Description of Work: We hired Absolute Moving for our move from western tidewater to the outer banks. They packed the kitchen items - pots/pans/glass/dishes, etc. along with lamps and many miscellaneous items from the garage.

This company had excellent reviews on Angie's list, but I feel like I dealt with another mover from the one reviewed. I called weeks in advance and scheduled my move for 8:15 AM. At 7:45 AM the driver called and informed me that another job had been scheduled and he would have to complete that one before ours. He hoped to get to us about 12:30 PM. I called the office to find out why my move had been preempted and I was told that a truck broke down and the jobs had to be doubled up. (I later asked why they couldn't rent a truck from the many agencies that supply such equipment, but I got no response.) The driver called again at 12 PM and said that the first job was bigger than anticipated and that they now hoped to get to us by 3 PM. The truck finallly arrived at our place at 3:25 PM, more than 7 hours late. I had other deliveries and services scheduled for that day and ended up having to drive back and forth several times because of this delay. The cable company could not complete the install because neither the TV nor the phone were in the new apartment. The driver and crew who actually performed the work did a very good job. I think the job took longer than it should have because the crew was tired and we had to drive through rush hour traffic from the old place to the new. Since this job was paid by the hour, that increased my cost. I called the office a few days after the move to let them know that I was very unhappy with the way things went, but the response did not change my opinion of the company. I would not use them again and would not recommend them to someone else.

We are sorry for the delay in Member's job, however, our truck wasn't broken down it was still full from the night before. Our customers from the day before couldn't close and left us stranded with their items until 10:00 a.m. that morning when we started to unload. We told Member that, but she must have misunderstood. We discounted her move and it only cost $420.00, so I thought she was happy in the end. :( She liked our movers and the move, the delay just left a bad taste in her mouth. Sorry!

The service from start to finish was nothing less than fantastic. I received a quote for packing and moving all my household belongings within a few hours of calling. The appraiser came to my home and was very thorough and professional and they honored the quoted price without any hidden cost or expenses. The moving crew showed up promptly on time and packed and loaded the truck with all our belongings. The same crew drove the moving truck and unpacked it at our new home in Charleston. The moving crew actually came by in the evening one day early and unpacked and set up our beds so we would not have to sleep on the floor our first night in our new home. They had already worked a full day and did not leave until almost 9:00 PM. I did not even ask or push for this service they simply did it because they wanted us to be as comfortable as possible. The packing of our goods was amazing and we did not even have as much as a small scratch on any of our belongings. Finding a respectable moving company was one of the biggest stresses I incurred when planning our move. I could not have made a better choice...money well spent. I highly recommend Absolute Moving Company to anyone planning a move.

ABSOLUTE TRUST! Moved large household, including fragile, cumbersome, antique, and two especially heavy items (compare to two grand pianos and just as delicate). The team of Joey, Earl, and Jim were absolutely the most hard working, dedicated, helpful, respectful, and proficiently strong as well as agile- like a football defensive lineman executing an olympic figure skating jump. They nailed the takeoff and landing with strength, precision and speed. What was also amazing is the stamina and collective teamwork. I was the one who was like a bull in a china shop. If I had stood still long enough, they probably would have bubble wrapped me - moving a large household is stressful! They quickly reduced that fear. Jim packed the very large truck to capacity, not wasting one bit of space - as if re-engineering a puzzle from pieces to picture. My confidence in Absolute Moving is based on this team. They expressed the exceptionally high capabilities of the company and other teams, but I write this review based on this team with confidence, admiration, and TRUST! Would I procure the services of this company again? Absolutely! In this day and age, it is hard to find dedication to work, and especially hard work! The team of Joey, Earl, and Jim moved my home with the care and respect as if it was their own precious cargo. And also because of their kindness and stress reducing communication (!), they know they are welcome to visit my home if they are in the area! Absolute Movers? Yes! Team Joey, Earl and Jim? Absolutely!

This is an outstanding moving company! We had them pack us and move us from our 3-bedroom, 2-floor house to a 3-bedroom, 1-floor condo within the same city and they did a terrific job from start to finish. Rick, the owner, arrived promptly on our scheduled date to evaluate our needs and provide us an estimate. He's very personable and extremely knowledgeable about his business. I showed him what we wanted to move as we went from room to room of the house, as well as the attic and the garage, and he took notes and asked questions. When we were through he sat down and quickly gave me a very reasonable estimate for the packing as well as the moving. Rick asked if we'd like to pack the garage items ourselves since most were already in bins and we'd save some money if we packed up the remaining items. This was a great suggestion because there wasn't much to finish packing and a lot of what wasn't in bins we were planning to sell at a garage sale. I'd forgotten to tell him we were interested in having them unpack for us as well, so he gave me an estimate for that too. We'd lived in the house for 22 1/2 years and, despite the fact that we'd done a good amount of purging beforehand, we still had a great deal to pack/move. Rick estimated we'd have about 125 boxes - for us a lot, but he considered it pretty average. Four nice young men arrived on time on packing day and spent about 8 hours packing for us. They were all very friendly and very respectful of our things. They took their time and were very careful in handling and packing them. It took them about 8 hours to complete the work and when they were done they verified they'd be back the next day to load the trucks and move us. The next morning they arrived again on time and began loading the trucks. This took quite some time and after about 7 hours they finished and drove the trucks to our new place. They spent another 5 hours hauling our things to the condo (2nd floor unit with elevator access), and we unpacked many things as the day progressed. It was a ton of work for them and a really long day, but their attitudes remained upbeat and we never heard a complaint (we were tired from the day and were amazed at their stamina and positive attitudes all the way through). By around 9 P.M. they had emptied the trucks and they asked if we would like them to unpack for us! We were stunned that they had any energy left after 12 hours of hard work, and told them they needed to go home and rest and decided we would do the rest of the unpacking ourselves. They were fully prepared to do the unpacking as we had requested! I can't praise this company enough! We feel blessed to have had such a positive moving experience because of them. The cost of the move was incredibly low considering the amount of work they did for us. The next time we move (hopefully a long way off!) we will definitely use their services.

They called us in advance to let us know they would be behind schedule but not by much because the truck was not ready. They arrived at about 845am Saturday morning and it took roughly 45 minutes to get what they needed out of my fiancee's apartment to my place. The crew that showed up was a two-man crew as opposed to three which bumped the cost down. The move was completed in exactly two hours. The total cost with the voucher was $70. We paid them in cash and sent them on their way.
Description of Work: We used them to move the heavy furniture from my fiancee's apartment to my condo about 2 mi away. My fiancee alerted me to a voucher in the Virginian Pilot advertising $100 for $200 in services. We purchased the voucher and contacted them about doing the move. They advised us that what we were wanting (three movers and a truck for 2 hrs) would cost us $350 ($150 with the voucher). We setup the appointment for them to come on the 12th.

My overall experience with this company was great! I called and got an estimate for one truck, two men, two hours to move those extra-large items we couldn't move to our new house by ourselves. I was quoted a price, they stuck to it, the movers were prompt, courteous and professional. They wrapped my furniture nicely (for the two mile ride!) and placed it in the house. No damage, no pain at all. A friend of mine thought the price was high, but based on what I had paid in larger cities to move the same few items, I thought this was a good price.

Overall it went well. The workers were professional and hard working, even though it was very hot. Scratched my china hutch during the process, but were very apologetic. They left a piece of the bedframe in their truck, and since we didnt ask them to put the bed together on moving day, we didnt notice until a few days later. We werent sure if the piece was lost in the move, or was somewhere in the house. Upon calling the company, they said it was in their truck. It would have been helpful if someone had called us when they cleaned out the truck after our move. I'm sure this happens all the time. We were lucky that our piece was found.

I was in a hurry to move and called on Thursday, I was given a time on the following Monday. The day of the move three men and a truck arrived 15 minutes early for the job. They were professional and friendly. I was told they would do whatever I wanted them to do i.e.. pack boxes, but I had already packed what I wanted to take. They did not waste any time and did not damage any of my property. I will definitely use them again if I need to move and I will recommend them to anyone who asks.

When it came the day of the move I got worried when nobody showed up by 10AM. They were supposed to show up first thing in the morning. I called and our appointment had "slipped through the cracks". They didn't have us on their schedule. Rick apologized and sent two men over for our move. They were very friendly and one was especially large and muscular, but for the size and weight of our furniture they should have sent four men. They ended up damaging every piece of furniture they moved and scratched the hardwood floor as well. They dropped the expensive H***** desk and the H***** amour. There were thunder storms in the area and we had bought mattress protectors which my wife asked the movers to use. It wasn't raining at the moment and the movers said they didn't need the mattress protectors. By the time they got to the new place it was pouring rain. They set the king mattress edge down in standing water at the doorway and now it is stained. This mattress is only about a year old. Absolute had a very nice wood repair guy named Norman come out and repair the wood damage. He did an excellent job, but of course it will never be quite like it was before. He tried to clean the stain off the mattress, but he could not get it off. I called and spoke with Rick about it and he said he would have a professional, like Stanley Steamer, contact me for an appointment. I have not heard back since.
Description of Work: We only needed help with some very heavy furniture; we moved the rest ourselves. Co-owner, Rick Taylor came by the house and gave us a very reasonable quote. He was very friendly. The furniture to be moved included two very heavy and expensive H***** pieces, one desk and one TV amour as well as king and queen mattress sets and a china hutch.

The job was $600.00, which is a small job. The Customer claims that Absolute Moving Company scratched and dropped "every" piece in his house. There were 3 movers who came the morning of 10/20/12 and they were extremely cordial and professional. They began by doing a walk thru to assess items to be moved. The potentially stressful moving process (our first) was professional and a pleasure from start to finish. The movers (Jimmy, Earl, Manny and Darry) showed up 15 minutes early, immediately got to work and professionally handled all our old ( not antique!) furniture with care. They shrink wrapped almost everything to prevent scratching or staining. We had prepacked dishes and clothing to save time but others items we were unsure about were packed without complaint by the team. The four movers were friendly (and college educated!) and very industrious. After the 40 mile drive to our new home they unpacked placing all items in their designated location and removed the shrink wrap. They had to make a second trip to pick up the garage and yard items which they did after a short lunch break. They reinstalled the washer and dryer and cleaned up all the packing materials. It was really a pleasure dealing with these young men. The price at the conclusion of the move was exactly the estimate offered.
Description of Work: Rick Taylor (owner) showed up at the date and time promised for a free in home estimate. He did a thorough job, was knowledgable and personable and explained the moving process and gave us a list of helpful hints to expedite the moving process. His team of four movers showed up on time and moved a 1900 sq. ft. ranch home of furniture in two trips 40 miles in an 8 hour period.

Packing went well. Storage was not planned but new house wasn't ready. Did not know storage fee until that day. Very expensive. Crew that unpacked was different. They were less experienced, not as professional. Due to illness, the unpacking within the new house took up to recently. 2 cameras missing - one still in box, one older. Older camera case in the packed box though. Emailed company 2 times - no response. UPDATE 10/1/12: It is true that they loaded their trucks with boxes that I packed, and that there were many. While the responder spent quite a bit of time reporting these issues, I do not see the relevance to my complaint of missing items. And if they found the boxes poorly packed, all the more opportunity for persons to see what was inside, like my 2 cameras. While I did send them 2 emails, I do not have copies.

First I would like to say that we did not box anything in the house. This was a hoarder house with over 150 boxes, which were falling apart, and haphazardly packed by the owner. I personally went to see the house and provided the initial asessment. As a favor to a friend, I gave her a great price of $1300.00 for a direct move to Norfolk. She set up and everything was a go. Next, I got a call from her realtor stating that she wasn't able to close on the new house...as we were loading her items. Counter offer 0. We moved the member in May, here it is September: 4.5 months later. We never boxed (packed) her items and she says they are missing. No way would we be able to tell which box 2 cameras were in. Her house was a hoarder hose stuff everywhere and very disorganized. Everything was offloaded, she has everything they loaded. I’m sorry she can’t find them, but we don’t have them. Please ask the member how much we charged her when she sprung storage on us at the last minute $200.00, it should have been $600. So please have her send us a check for $400.00. I can’t believe this… Please ask her to rephrase her complaint. Load household goods, not pack, or packing. We never packed her, just loaded her items (prepacked by her.) I gave her a price of $200.00 (which is our one night fee) to keep the items on the truck from Friday until Monday...She threw a fit and accused me of holding her over a barrel. She grumbled about the price the whole time. She put me in a precarious situation and I had to rent another truck for Saturday because I was short. The house was disorganized, I can't imagine she could find anything at the new house, nor did we pack her boxes. How would we even know what was in her boxes, nothing was labeled. This is frustrating to get a review from a customer that we bent over backwards to accomodate, and she put us in a bad spot, nor did we pack her boxes. When she says "packed" her, she means loaded the truck. She has her terms wrong too. I have never received a complaint from her, via voice mail or by phone. I haven't gotten any e-mail, realtor calls, or any response at all. Her phone is cut off and I can't contact her to even discuss this matter.

Using Absolute Moving Company was really a positive experience. When we called for an estimate, they showed up promptly, even though we had to reschedule our first appointment on pretty short notice. He looked throughout our house, garage, and outdoor shed and gave us a price on the spot. This was not an estimate, it was a fixed price. Having obtained three other estimates, we chose Absolute Moving Company, whose price was midpoint of the other estimates, because we felt really reassured in our initial meeting that they could handle this large job. The day of the move, the movers, seven of them, showed up promptly at the scheduled time. They worked professionally and efficiently, wrapped all the furniture, loaded all the furniture and a huge number of boxes, in approximately four hours' time. They were all really courteous and polite. Two days later, at the scheduled time, they showed up at our new location. They again moved quickly and professionally and unloaded all the furniture and belongings into the house, two-story, and garage. They asked us where we wanted each piece of furniture and every box as they unloaded and put everything where it belonged. They even reassembled the beds. I did purchase additional insurance from them since I had a lot of antique china and some expensive furniture, but it was really not necessary. Everything arrived and there was not one scratch on anything. I cannot give enough praise to these amazing movers. I would not hesitate to call them again or to recommend them to anyone who needs a moving company, as I already have! The price was extremely reasonable for the quality of service provided.
Description of Work: Absolute Moving Company moved all of our belongings from our 2,700 s.f,. two-story house in VA Beach to the Charlotte, NC area. They did not have to pack our belongings, but they did wrap all the furniture.

Unfortunately, we were not able to use them because we did not close and get access to the new house when we thought we would. They were booked for the day we ended up needing.
Description of Work: I had an appointment for an estimate and they came out and were prompt, friendly and professional.

The owner came out and gave us an esimate, which proved to be not only much lower than the other two estimates we received but also the final price. On packing day, a crew showed up and had everything packed in record time. The next day, the moving crew arrived on time and loaded everything by early afternoon in spite of an hour-plus heavy downpour during which loading was impossible. The two trucks arrived at our new home about fifty miles distant and the same crew had everything unloaded and in place, including moving a couple of heavy/bulky items already in our new home to different rooms for us and placing a coupld of our pieces in different places as we figure out exactly where we wanted them. They even held heavy pieces of furniture up off the hardwood floors so we could place sliders or casters under them. After unloading, they took the washer and dryer we were switching out back to our old home at no additional charge (the other movers had said that was an additional trip, with a minimum charge of up to $500 just for that trip!). Both crews were professional, careful, and even cheerful and friendly as they went about their work.

These guys moved us on the two hottest days this summer. It took 11 hours to do the main house - they started with five guys and two trucks (which they filled!), and they got two more guys to reinforce them in the afternoon. The next day they sent three guys to move my husband's old house stuff, which did not take as long. They were very nice, and helpful moving (and re-moving!) very heavy furniture over the two days. Quite frankly, these guys do not get paid enough for what they do! No major damage to anything, though some minor stuff. I had the owners out to the house ahead of time to give me a quote, and they gave me a very fair flat rate. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Moved two separate households into one new address.

They were prompt and very skilled in their work. One bookcase was secured to the wall with a very long screw and they were careful to remove it without damaging the bookcase. The person who scheduled the work on the phone was very courteous and professional, as were the two men who performed the work. I would use this company again for a local move.
Description of Work: Absolute Moving moved a bedroom suit and a few other pieces from my parents' apartment at a retirement home in Virginia Beach after they passed away. They delivered the furniture to two different locations in Cheapeake.
