This is the 2nd time that we hired Steve and his crew to do work at our home. The 1st time he created a beautiful flower/plant bed and installed french drains to help us with standing water that we had after a road was built behind our house. He and his crew made sure everything was absolutely perfect and beautiful and his attention to detail is what made us hire him again. The 2nd time we called him and 2 other companies to give us ideas and a quote on installing a well, an irrigation system, grading, sod, french drainage for the entire home and landscaping. His price was right in the middle which we were happy about. (Trust me when I tell you that you get what you pay for-we once tried the lower price on another project with another company and we ended up paying way more in the long run.) And his ideas were way better than both of the other companies. Steve and his crew came and did everything that they said they were going to do in a timely manner and everything turned out amazing! And he was always available to take our phone calls and answer our question. Our yard is beyond perfect and exceeded our expectations!

Steve and his crew was very professional and did outstanding work. Upon completion the project expectations were exceeded and Steve provided me with great maintenance instructions for my new lawn and shrubbery. The work area was completely clean upon completion. All materials used were of great quality.

Steve Nassan and A1 Lawn and Landscaping did most of the work satisfactorily, but I rated it an F overall due to unprofessional and unethical conduct as described below. 1. Overcharging for materials. Steve's original proposal included 7 yards of hardwood mulch. However, he added $127 to the final invoice for 1.5 additional yards and to "upgrade" to red oak mulch, which I never authorized. When I thought the chalet stone drainage was inadequate, he added $300 to the invoice for additional stone to correct his own deficient estimate. 2. Overcharging for labor. His proposal included "redesign of all beds," but he added $95 to the final invoice to re-position two sprinkler heads. This should have been part of the original estimate. Also, when I asked him to prune a couple of intruding branches on a neighbor's tree -- which should've also been part of his original estimate -- his added charge: $100. Ridiculous. 3. Substandard material. The raised planter he built had poor quality topsoil (almost entirely sand). Good quality topsoil should include sand, silt, clay and organic material, giving a black, rich soil mixture. When I mentioned this to him, he came back and added compost to improve the mixture, but the original topsoil mix was poor. As a professional landscaper, he would've certainly known that a near 100 percent sand mix isn't proper topsoil. 4. Adding charges to finish incomplete work. His final invoice withheld $200 for incomplete work by mutual agreement, with the understanding that it would be paid when the work was finished. When asked him to complete this work (planting a holly tree), he asked for an extra $115 to finish the job. Rather than pay more than we had already agreed to, I left this work undone. 5. Rudeness. He asked to be paid before I had a chance to inspect the work to ensure I was satisfied. When I tried to discuss the overcharges with him, verbally and by email, he was dismissive and called it "a waste of time." Otherwise, everything else was fine or with only minor deficiencies. This was an expensive landscaping job, however -- costing over 7000 dollars -- and adding hundreds of dollars in charges, using cheap materials, and treating a customer rudely is unacceptable. If you don't mind being treated badly, Steve Nassan and A1 Lawn and Landscaping might be the company for you.
Description of Work: Redesign and level beds, install aluminum edging, and add mulch. Remove 2 trees. Install a raised planter. Plant 6 Encore Azalias, 7 Yuletide Camelias, 1 Indian Hawthorne, and 1 Foster Holly. Remove dead Indian Hawthorne, 2 Boxwoods, and numerous day lilies. Trim and all trees and shrubs, and fertilize shrubs. Install chalet stone at edge of beds for drainage.

Every now and then you have a customer who is not happy no matter what you do. They also are under the impression that once you are on the job, it doesn't matter what the contract says, you have to do additional work for free. Unfortunately we don't do that and our contract clearly states, any extra work that we are asked to do will be an additional fee. In addition, if there are changes or issues we come across, we always get the customers permission for the increased cost. We never strong arm the customer and they are free to decline any suggestions we give. 1. We were suppose to do hardwood mulch on this job. Luckily, we were able to find a very good red oak mulch, which is an upgrade and a better quality. I told him I found some and I brought it. I added an extra 1 1/2 yards of mulch and I told him that if he didn't want to pay for it, it would be fine with me. He said its ok, I understand. I told him that my cost on this was $127 and he agreed to pay it. The Chalet stone charge was not for "deficient estimate", he requested that I add Chalet Stone at the right side of his front bed because his down spout washes the mulch away. So I told him it was going to cost $300. He asked why so much, and I told him because now I have to make another trip in the dump truck to pick up the stones and bring them back and install them. If he had told me in the beginning, when I gave him the estimate that is what he wanted, it would have been a lot cheaper. He agreed to the price. This was not in the original estimate. 2. Our estimate did not include any sprinkler work. Again, this was not in the contract, and Im not sure why he would assume we would do this work for free. I gave him the cost and he had a choice of saying no. But he agreed to it and we moved them. If he would have told me in the beginning that he wanted me to trim the neighbor'[Member Information Removed] tree, I would have included that in the original estimate. However, it was never mentioned and why would he assume that I was going to trim the neighbor'[Member Information Removed] tree without him mentioning it when I gave him the estimate. Thats ridiculous. 3. The customer insisted that the topsoil in the vegetable garden was all sand. I repeatedly told him it was topsoil, the same topsoil I put in his flower beds. In order to make him happy, I brought compost and mixed it with the existing soil for no charge. He came out and started raising his voice at me telling me he wanted the soil replaced because it was all sand. He went so far as to take a sample of the topsoil, before I mixed it with the compost, to get tested. A few days later he emailed me and confirmed that it was topsoil with a little sand. And, as I had explained to him, the sand was to help with drainage. Which is also stated in our contract that we mix our topsoil with a little bit of sand. I have been using the same topsoil for 25 years and we know it is the best topsoil we can get. 4. He has a Holly tree that I have never seen before. To me, it looks like a Foster Holly. On my contract, it says that I am going to plant a Foster Holly for him. After he signed the contract, he did more research and he told me that he doesn't think its a Foster Holly and that he really wants me to match the one that he has. I came back to his house and took a clipping of the tree and spent over 8 hours going to three different nurseries in Suffolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, trying to find out the species of this Holly. No one knew what it was. He did not get charged for all that time and traveling that I did. He told me that he did not want to plant the Foster Holly right now and that he was going to hold $200 until he found out what species the Holly was. He even told me that he took a clipping to the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk and they didn't know what it was. So then he went to McDonald'[Member Information Removed] Garden Center in Virginia Beach and found a different type of Holly that is not even close to the one he has, and asked me to go there, pay retail for it and bring to his house and plant it for the $200 credit that he held on me. In my contract, it said I am planting a Foster Holly. There was nothing about me Going To McDonald'[Member Information Removed] and wasting all that time for no additional charge. He agreed and signed the contract to a Foster Holly. Once again, he changed his mind and it was outside the contract, requiring me to spend extra time and labor, which is not free. 5. Let'[Member Information Removed] be clear. The customer and his wife were on the job the entire time we were there. They literally walked out every hour to check on every single thing we did. They asked the same questions over and over and over. Again, every additional charge was cleared with the customer prior to us completing the work. We got his approval on all up charges. He even questioned each charge as we were going and I explained repeatedly. There was no surprise when it was time to pay the invoice. When I gave him the invoice, we walked around both the front and back yard and he started asking the same questions again about the extra charges that he already agreed to. Then during this time, he asked me to relocate a concrete bench from the front yard to the back yard. I told him that he should have asked me that earlier because I couldn't pick up that bench by myself and my guys were already gone. He said I need you to move it to the backyard and he didn't care. I moved the bench to the backyard and hurt my back because I knew if I didn't do it, he was not going to pay me that night. Even 2 months after the job was complete, he kept emailing me about the uncharges. I told him that I had already explained them to him several times and to please stop wasting my time. There are some customers who don't tell you everything they want done when you are giving them an estimate. They try to cheat you by adding more stuff later and they expect you not to charge them for it. Why wasn't this customer honest in the beginning and tell me every thing he wants done, not partial, so he had a comprehensive estimate that included everything that he wanted done. It is cheating us by not telling us everything you want done and expecting not to pay for the additional work. One final note, this review was expected. This customer went so far as to try and blackmail me with this bad review to get me to jump through his hoops. I told him we are not going down to that level and he is free to put anything in his review and we will respond.

Pros: - Very friendly and professional. - Quality of work performed was outstanding. - Work both began and was completed ahead of schedule. Cons: - Refused to negotiate on the price. - Indicated (before we hired him) that he would NOT perform follow-up work if we were not satisfied. - Only begrudgingly accepted the sale price mentioned on his listing from this website, and then found ways to tack on incidentals and reclaimed 90% of the discount.

I was impressed with his "on the spot" estimate. It came with a warning that the price would go up $1500 after 2 weeks. Once I called to give him the job, he showed up about 10 days later on a Monday to start (no notice, but good timing for me). He and his crew are very hard workers and are meticulous in their careful grooming and overall look of the yard. They arrived between 7:30 and 8:00 and worked all day except the 4th and last day. I didn't decide until the day they started working to get a short sidewalk replaced. He arranged that to be done that day and the job was completed that night. Overall, I'm very pleased with his work. I would recommend him for your job with the following considerations: I would recommend anybody considering him for landscape design to know exactly what they want and how many plants before the estimate. No modifications are made without extra cost and he is resistant to take back plants you decide against (don't like the look) . He gets them from Suffolk and said he really couldn't take them back (not practical). Be prepared for modification offers. This can really add up. The negative part of this experience was that I felt "nickel and dimed" on the modifications. I'll take responsibility for that but with the magnitude of this job, a little more customer consideration over the mighty $ would've made this a "straight A" experience.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your taking the time to submit it. We apologize for the feeling of being "nickeled and dimed". Unfortunately, we cannot do work for free as we are running a business and we need to cover our overhead. We work very hard with customers during the estimate to determine what a customer wants, what is entailed in the job and recommendations to meet future needs and mitigate issues. We will, and do, spend as much time necessary during estimates to answer all questions a customer may have. This includes showing pictures, explaining size of plants or plant varieties and most of the time, making a sketch of the proposed job area. We always leave a copy of the contract with the customer for their review. It also clearly states on the contract that modifications or additions not stated on the contract will be extra. We always get a customers' agreement prior to performing any additional work. With that said, when we do offer additions, we charge a reasonable fee because we are already on location. Furthermore, many times the things we suggest will save the customer money in the long run by correcting a foreseeable issue. We are glad you are happy with our overall work. Thank you again for your review.

Outstanding planning and execution by Mr. Nassan and his landscaping team! Yard is now perfectly manicured after a too long winter. We can also now entertain guests on our stone walled patio over looking the lake in comfort and style. Mr. Nassau used outstanding materials, and the craftsmanship was excellent. Courteous and prompt, pleasant service. Highly recommend A-1 Lawn & Landscaping if you want the job done right the first time.
Description of Work: Trimmed all trees and bushes; cleared out all flower beds; applied new mulch; applied crab grass killer and fertilizer. Removed old smaller wooden retaining wall and brick patio facing our lake front, and replaced it with a much bigger, classier brick/stone retaining wall and foundation/patio. Repaired and replaced wooden bulkhead on lakefront.

I had called another company on Angie's list to come quote me, they came to look but never gave me my quote, after a week I decided to look again. A1 (Steve) had great reviews so I decided to call him; he was extremely quick and efficient, quoted me on paper in person and started the next day (this was two days before Christmas and his last job of the year--I'm sure most people aren't getting drainage issues fixed 2 days before Christmas). His crew was respectful and efficient as well. I will certainly use Steve again when I need more work done and would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: I live in a 1950's ranch and when we have a lot of rain at one time the water comes in thru my vents for under the house and out thru my crawl door which floods my garage. I needed french drains or a solution to solve this disastrous problem.

It went very, very well. He prices a little higher than his competitors, but for good reason. He's professional and knows what he's doing.
Description of Work: I needed my back yard completely re-done. It was overgrown with weeds, it needed grading, it needed irrigation and landscaping. Mr. Hassan was there killing the "grass" the day I made the phone call and to this day I'm still impressed with his timing. After the everything was killed off with the weedkiller, he had the irrigation put in, then graded the area, put new sod and did some very nice landscaping with new shrubs and flowers.

Called and made an appointment with the company. Steve was on time and gave me a proposal for the work. Worked started the following week and went very smoothly. Steve and his crew worked hard and got the job done on time. Everything looks great. Now just waiting for some rain to give it a good test.
Description of Work: During extended rains I would have water backing up against the back of my house and it would eventually seep into the floor vents through out the house. Steve came out and looked at the problem and suggested a drain system from the back side of the house around the end and drain out to the curb.

Response from A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc
For this customer, we did a landscaping job, grade and sod backyard. When I originally met with the customer, they asked me what would be the toughest grass for the backyard, because they have dogs. I advised Bermuda would be a good idea but the back yard is a little shady so we would need to trim up the trees. The customer agreed to this and that was what we did. The customer also showed me the front yard and asked me about bare spots in the lawn and what could be done. I advised the customer the best time to seed is in Sept/Oct and it’s a good idea to wait until then. She asked me if there was anything she could do right now because she didn’t want to wait 6 months. I told her as long as the weather stays nice and cool, we could aerate and seed and she should have good results. Again, as long as the weather stays nice and cool. After installation, customer called a few times for us to come back and check on the seed and the sod. We came out and adjusted her sprinkler system and we told her to be patient. As far as the sod, upon receiving their review, I called them and checked on the sod in the backyard. It is mostly dead. From looking at it, it could be for any number or reasons: over watering, dogs running all over it, or because it is shady in the backyard. I called the home owner, told them even though there is no warranty on sod or seeding, I am willing to re-sod the backyard with Fescue for no charge. (No landscaping business gives warranty on sod or seeding because the customer is responsible for watering and maintaining the grass.) In addition, I offered the customer a second option, since he had already seeded his yard himself it would need another application or aeration, seeding and fertilizing. I offered to cord aerate, seed and fertilize the front and back yard for no charge. The customer replied back the next day and asked if we can re-sod the backyard with St Augustine. I told him St Augustine won't work because it needs full sun and his backyard is somewhat shady. In addition to this, St. Augustine is harder to find and a lot more expensive than regular grass. It has been a few days since that conversation and I have not heard back from the customer. I have texted him again and asked him which way they wanted to go, and they have not responded. At this point, I have offered to rectify the situation at no cost to the customer and have not heard from them.

Our experience with Steve Nassan (owner) and his team at A-1 Lawn & Landscaping was fantastic - now we have the yard we dreamed of having! Steve claims to have 30 years of experience in landscaping and it shows in the quality of his work. Steve explained his services and made recommendations based on our needs, wants, budget, and timeline. He kept in touch throughout the process, was easy to reach with questions, and started on time (as weather permitted). It's now been about 3 months since he completed the work and my lawn looks great. He has been quick to respond to questions after the installation and just fixed one of the sprinklers that stopped moving (defective sprinkler, not his work) and adjusted my well pump to run smoothly for free. He even left me a bag of his fertilizer to use as I do my fall seeding. I have recommended Steve and A-1 to several of my neighbors and two of them have hired him also with good results. They are not the cheapest vendor out there but also not the most expensive...but the value for your dollar is there in the great results and longevity of the work that was done. Even the owner of my lawn mowing service commented, "Of all the lawns we cut, yours is by far the best. What did you do to get it like this?" I did nothing except hire Steve and his team and make sure I turn on my sprinklers. My wife and I highly recommend A-1 Lawn & Landscaping to anyone in the Hampton Roads area that wants a great lawn. Thank you!

Not good. He made some excuses that where he got it from they delivered filled dirt because it's for tax purposes and some such non sense and I'm pretty sure that I got filled dirt and not top soil like I was suppose to get we're talking about thirteen big trucks loads full. I don't think I got what I was suppose to get. I probably not recommend them.

We go all the way to North Carolina to get the best dirt, a really good farm dirt. Customers think that if the dirt is not completely black that it's not good, but that is not true. We have being using this dirt for over 25 years because it is great. We are confused as to why this customer is complaining about out dirt 3 years later. He even hired us a few months later to do an additional job and we used the same dirt then. Any customer who would like a sample of the dirt before we install it, is welcome to ask. We stand by the materials we use.

Steve and his crew showed up this morning and immediately got to work. They cleared the hedge to the ground and used a stump grinder to grind up the roots. They raked up the loose vegetation and back filled the holes with soil from the grinding process and used extra bags of soil to fill in any low spots. The whole thing took 5 hours (it was a BIG hedge!), but the end result was beautiful and exactly what my wife wanted. We are very impressed and if we ever need landscaping in the future Steve Nassan and his crew will be the people we call.

Outstanding work yet again. The drainage system is working wonderfully. Mr Nassan used a system of underground corrugated PVC like pipe that ran all the way from the front/side of the house to the lakeside bulkhead where he installed a pop up relief valve that dumps the collected rain water into the lake. The past few weeks have been an excellent test for this system. No more large lake between the homes following a heavy rain.

Description of Work: Primarily we needed a ground drainage system installed between my and my neighbor's homes; sodded a large and formerly mulched area in my backyard; replaced a number of scrubs; and general pruning and cleanup.

Was never satisfied with our landscaping "look" when we bought the house. Due to a dead tree, it was a great time to go for a re-design. I contacted a few contractors, and Steve (owner) replied first. Another contractor replied almost a half month later. The others never did. (Apparently, there was a messaging glitch on AL.) Steve was very accommodating both in scheduling a quote and doing the job. IMPORTANT: he's involved in the work itself, getting knee deep in the trenches, literally! He listened to our design/style preferences and color scheme. His creativity came through when he recommended a different tree to us while he was at the nursery getting the plants. First, was installation of a french drain in the back of the house that doesn't get any sunlight. It also has poor grading. This took up most of the first day. Steve repaired the irrigation lines that were cut during the dig; he even adjusted some sprinkler heads for optimization. Mulch beds were leveled and prepped. New topsoil was used as well. Then came planting of the various trees and flowering plants and bushes, followed by a generous layer of high-grade mulch. Unfortunately, because he forgot about the mulch bed in the backyard, all of the quoted trees and plants were allocated to the front of the house, which were all done on the first day. The extra plants did cost us extra (not covered by his mistake, although he did offer to re-allocate some from the front to the back, which we declined because his design worked.) They had to return a second day to finish planting the rest of the plants and remaining mulch on the bed, and repair a missed cut irrigation line. His crew also took care of some additional work not part of the original quote. UPDATE: It's been over a week and the plants and trees are thriving thanks to the rain and sun. The french drain works like a charm! We've received compliments from the neighbors, who also requested work from A-1. My regular irrigation contractor didn't recognize the house initially during a recent tune-up. No issues with the irrigation system after repairs, either. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Description of Work: Landscaping re-design. Removal of dead tree; planting of new tree. Installation of french drain. General landscaping maintenance. Optimization of downspout drainage.

They were on time and pleasant to work with. Since this is our first house, we are new to landscaping but Steve Nassan patiently walked us through proper aftercare of the lawn and services he did. He answered any and all questions we had about what he was doing and didn't just take our money and leave. He assured if anything happens or we need him to come out for anything to call him and he would be right over. It was overall amazing customer service which made the entire experience worth while. A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc is the only company we will work with for any further landscaping needs!
Description of Work: We had a contractor lay concrete for a new patio and driveway, which completely tore up our back yard and front lawn. A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc professionally laid sod and planted several bushes in our fenced in back yard. Our front lawn had hundreds of small rocks that needed removal prior to seeding that came from the destruction of our old driveway. A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc relentlessly spent hours perfecting the soil raking up all the rocks prior to seeding.

I have used A-1 Lawn Landscaping Service Inc. several times through out the years. I have counted on them to do a lot of work for me. They have redesigned my landscaping, fixed my irrigation system and put in a pavers walkway. All jobs are supervised by the owner and he is very hands on. He oversees every detail and is very meticulous. Steve and his crew are very professional and I have never been disappointed with their finished work. They always clean up behind themselves and do their best to leave their working area in better condition than when they arrived. I would recommend A-1 Lawn Landscaping Service and will continue to use them for my landscaping needs.
Description of Work: Flowerbeds were cleaned and mulched, plants replaced that died, bushes and trees trimmed, rock flowerbed leveled out.

Steve was very professional and honest. He and his crew did a great job with the drainage system and my patio looks much better with the landscaped gravel. The only hick up was he accidentally cut a cable line in the back yard but it was not his fault as Miss Utility never marked the line when they came out before the job. He was meticulous in avoiding a buried power line to my shed in which I had no idea of where exactly it was located. Definitely use A1 again and would recommend to others.
Description of Work: Installed a drainage system in my back yard, expanded my concrete patio with gravel and fertilized my font lawn.

We scheduled 2 companies from Angies List to interview and discuss project. Met Steve Nassan of A1 Lawn and Landscaping first and discussed project. We were immediately impressed by Steve and canceled second company. We met with Steve again and expanded scope of the project. Steve removed hot tub from deck and then he removed and hauled away the 16 x 25 deck. He installed pavers where the deck was and then he paved over old and cracked concrete patio. His design joined the old patio area with pavers that replaced the deck. He installed a fire pit on the new patio and reinstalled the hot tub. He then paved a new and wider walk way from the back yard to the front yard. He even widened the walk way on the side where we keep the trash cans and firewood. Steve is a hard working guy that did an amazing job designing and installing our new patio, fire pit and walk way. We look forward to enjoying our new patio for years to come and we highly recommend Steve Nassan for any landscaping project!

Steve did a wonderful job. When I first called him, he was able to come out the same day that I called to give an estimate. He started work a few days later. What had previously taken me weeks to weed (I'm not kidding - weeks. Those are some tough weeds), he was able to do in only a few hours. He was extremely quick! My flower beds look amazing now around my whole house and I'm finally proud of my yard. I'm very happy with his services.
Description of Work: Filled in a giant hole in my backyard left over from removed pool, weeded flower beds, applied mulch, edging
