It began on a Sat morning when I saw flooding in the backyard. I called Steve and he came out to see the yard and give me an estimate. As we spoke the things that needed to be done were larger than I anticipated but he made sure I understood all the things he suggested and why. Since it was the first week in May my next concern was how soon he could complete the project. He said it would be done before the end of the month and it was. I can't say enough positive things about both Steve and the men who work for him. Steve himself was on the job working and supervising. While they were working there was machinery and rocks in my driveway. By the time they finished they had cleaned up so completely you would never know that 8 tons of rock had been in my driveway. I would suggest him to my friends and intend to use him in the future
Description of Work: Steve and his crew installed a french drain around the house and draining to the ditch in the street. Once that was done he regraded the back, brought in new rocks, and pruned and mulched the landscaping.

My house and yard were in very bad condition since I purchased it. One corner of the backyard was overgrown with bushes, vines and small trees. Steve and his team gave me a fair price to clear it all and level the ground so I can install a shed. It turned out great. My front flower beds are huge but they were filled with old lava rocks left by the previous owner and full of overgrown plants/weeds. Steve and his team hauled all the rocks away and laid top soil throughout both flower beds. I can finally make my house look presentable! Thanks A-1!

Steve came over the day we called him for estimate. He had great ideas for our yard and knew exactly what we needed. Steve was able to start the project in just a couple days. No waiting weeks to get on the books like with some companies. Steve and his team did not disappoint. Perfectly trenched beds and everything came together as we had hoped. They even came back the day after they finished to add a little more mulch and blow the walkways again. They couldn't have done a better job and we are very scrutinizing when it comes to work we have done on our home. We will definitely use A1 for future landscaping projects.

Before I begin, I have to say that I share some of the fault. I was not home to supervise the work and I did not check my sprinkler system before he left. Now with that being said, I contracted with Steve to have the completed work done before leaving for business on 4-8. He indicated that the job would take about a week to complete. He arranged the design and did the work. I was pleasantly surprised when the work was completed within two days. They completed the work on 4-2-14. He met me at my home that evening to go over a few of the details of the landscaping, explained to me the watering schedule, and I paid him the remainder of what was owed. Per the schedule, I cut on the sprinklers and noticed that several of the heads were now two low and some were misplaced since the new bed was longer. The heads that were too low were digging a trough. I also noticed that one of the sprinkler lines had been damaged in the flower bed and was no longer functioning properly. Shame on me for not checking this before letting him leave and providing final payment. I immediately contacted Steve and he indicated that he would return the next day to correct. He called back and indicated that he would not be able to return until Friday. I agreed to that timeline. He called back again and indicated that his other appointment was running long and could he reschedule for Saturday (4-5-14). We agreed to meet on Saturday at 12 noon. I rearranged my schedule to be home. Around 11am on Saturday, he called and indicated that he was having some personnel issues and that he would not be able to make it until Monday. I agreed reluctantly because I was leaving on business on the Tuesday. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn toward rain for Monday (4-7-14). I let him know that I was disappointed because this should have been taken care of the next day. It is also important to note that all of the prior days that we have arranged were beautiful from a weather perspective. My concern is that this has gone on for too long without being corrected and that it may never be correct without me having to hire someone to complete the damaged sprinkler system and adjust the other heads. With these being all new plants, they need to be watered regularly and with the damage to the system, I cannot set the to watered. I had hopes of establishing a longer term relationship but am not sure if that is possible now.
Description of Work: Removed old landscaping, installed new landscaping and regraded areas of the yard.

Response from A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc
Mr. (member name removed) and I met almost a few months before we started this job. Due to his family emergencies with his in-laws, and trips he needed to make, this job was continuously delayed. A lot of time was spent on emails and phone calls with him during this time period, which was perfectly fine. Before starting this job, we discussed that we might need to relocate a few sprinkler heads inside the flower beds because of the shape and height of the new beds. We told him he only needed to mark the sprinklers inside the flower beds. We would raise those sprinkler heads and relocate those we needed to. Mr. Burke did mark sprinkler heads. We also talked about the sprinklers in the turf area. He wanted to know if they should be marked. I said no, because we are only doing top dressing grading. We were adding topsoil to make yard level i.e. filling in low areas and not adding more than 1" of topsoil over the existing grass. This would not affect his sprinkler heads. On another note, sprinkler heads can be found but sprinkler lines are not marked. We did nick a sprinkler line inside the flower bed, we did not realize or we would have fixed it on the spot. When Mr. Burke called us, we did have to reschedule a couple of times but I always asked him if it was okay, and had he said no, I would have re-arranged to get there. I never indicated the rescheduling was due to personal issues, although it was due to a very busy season. I did return to the job and checked the leak. I fixed the broken line and he indicated that there were two sprinklers in the middle of the yard that were too low in the ground. The sprinkler head was 7-8 inches under ground, keep in mind that we only added 1" of topsoil so that issue had nothing to do with us. We did however fix it for him for no charge. After reading this review, I called Mr. Burke twice and left him a message to call me back and let me know if there is anything I can do to make him happy. I have not received a return phone call. The bottom line, when we make a mistake, we do come back to fix it. Sometimes it may take a little bit longer to get there, due to scheduling and busy season, however we did complete the fixes that were needed.

We hired Steve and his company A1 Lawn & Landscaping to correct our mess! We tried to hire them last summer but they were already booked for the season, so we waited until this spring and contacted him right away (this was due to all his positive reviews) ? we are so happy we waited for them! They did an incredible job installing a drainage system under the deck in a very cramped space and out to the road on both sides of the house, tying in all the downspouts and AC drainage. They then placed a top dressing to correct the irregular grade in our yard as well as all the holes, then seeded the entire yard. They will be out to seed the yard again and place weed control on it. I could not be happier with the job that they completed. Steve was in contact with us to keep us updated on the progress. Call him before he gets booked for the season! I waited to write this review until we had rain several times - the drainage system is working like a charm! No more mud bogs in our yard! Steve did not try to sell us any items that we did not need ? like pumps, etc?. like other companies. I appreciate his honesty! I would definitely recommend them without reservation!
Description of Work: We had drainage issues on the side of our yard and under our deck. In addition, the yard was not graded properly and had mini potholes through it.

Steve showed up to our house. We told him what the problem was (Backyard drainage issues and dips in the front yard). He gave me his picture portfolio and asked me to give him a few minutes to draw out what he thought was necessary. After he explained to me in detail what needed to be done, I wrote him a down payment check so we could get started as soon as possible. They called and had Miss Utility come out an mark for digging. On that following Monday, Steve and his crew showed up on time and started work immediately. They cut through the cable line when digging, but accidents happen. Other than that, they did everything Steve said they would, to a "T". They finished up on the next day at 12pm, and left the area spotless. I would AND will utilize A1 again.

What I liked most about the job he did is that he met my needs and was always a gentleman. He always did exactly what he said he would do and I would give him the highest marks I can.
Description of Work: Steve Nassan from A1 did an excellent job in installing french drains and installing underground drain pipes to the curb and cutting a neat 4 inch hole in the curbs. He cut the front walk and had matching house bricks layed making a neat job. That was to get the drains underneath a 4-5 foot wide walk. He located a defective drain in the back of the house and he ran his new drains into that and on out to the street. Steve and two other guys worked a little over a week. They installed 4 drain areas in the yard so it would drain out to the street. They corrected a serious problem we had in the front of the house, removing a couple of large bushes and digging up rock and installing french drains along the front of the house. He cut 4 holes in the curb and rain the drains into those whole from the 4 points in the yard.

It went GREAT! Here is why I liked working with Steve... He and I did three iterations of my plan and he was very open about costs and alternatives. In the end, we settled on a good scope of work at a fair price. He was great in communicating to me about schedule and work days around the weather. He kept asking me if I was happy with the work. We made a couple of tweaks to the plan that were positive at fair prices. The backyard now looks like a green carpet, with correct drainage, because he graded and laid it himself. The concrete patio and walkway are very, very nice...with correct slope for drainage. I used to get depressed coming out my back door and looking at my yard. Now I am happy just looking at it! Landscaping is not cheap, but this project was worth every dime I had saved for it!!!
Description of Work: Removed nasty old wood deck. Got rid of all old concrete, tree roots, pavers, and a host of other stuff (including a 30 year old beer can!) that had been in this yard for three decades. Trust me, it was bad out there before Steve showed up. Poured a dyed concrete patio and walkway between the house and the detached garage. Added a subsurface drain line to the heat pump. Repositioned a sewer pipe cleanout connection. Regraded the entire backyard and sodded the whole thing. Cleaned up everything as well when done. Graded, seeded, and fertilized where the Bobcat needed access.

Our goal to transform our backyard from woodlands to a yard has been a nightmare of a project. We took down the trees and put up a fence ourselves, then had another company come out to remove the stumps. After the stump removal, our yard was still quite messy, and not ready for grass to be planted. It still needed a bunch of small tree roots removed, soil brought in, and regraded. We knew it was too much for us to do ourselves, so we began our search for an experienced contractor to complete the work. Our experience finding a contractor that will return our call, come out to give an estimate, and actually come back to us with an estimate, has been very poor! Based on Angie's List reviews, we called A1. A1 returned our calls, came out when they said they would, and provided the estimate as promised. When we inquired about an additional service, they did not hesitate to come back out to modify our estimate. Steve was very patient as we decided between A1 and one other company. We decided to go with A1, because they were able to do all the work themselves, whereas the other company did not offer as many services. We are beyond impressed with the work A1 did!!! All of the guys busted their buts, and did not cut any corners. After 2.5 years of this thorn of a project, we are happy to say we FINALLY have a lawn coming in! We wish we had consulted them prior to doing so much work ourselves, because it would have saved us a lot of headaches!

We scheduled a meeting for an estimate on the work and, like most of the reviews, Steve had to change the meeting time twice. Luckily, I had anticipated this and made myself flexible in order to support getting this work done. Just as an early note, I would try not to let that initial punctuality deter you from getting your quote. During the walk around we discussed all the work and problem areas. He took about another 30 minutes to take measurements and get his quote together, which he did on the spot. He made a very detailed list of the work and materials and the cost of the work and left me with a copy to discuss over with my wife. After we decided to go ahead with work, I called Steve and he was responsive and eager. They require a down payment of 1/3 the total estimate. The work started about two weeks later and a day early do to some scheduling constraints on my part. I really appreciated Steve's willingness to adjust to help meet my schedule. All the work described was done in a little over two full days (5-6 men) and was done to my complete satisfaction. Everyone of the workers were cordial and polite. They only asked for ice on a couple of occasions and nothing else. I was very pleased with their demeanor and attitude. Clean up was great. They had a couple of areas I was worried about, particularly were they put all the soil in the street. But, it looks like there were never there. Steve is professional and easy to work with. He is knowledgeable about the work they do and when ever a problem came up, he immediately contacted me, showed me the problem and, most importantly, gave me reasonable options on how to move forward. I would definitely hire these guys again. By the way, I didn't immediately post this review because I wanted to see the drain system in action...it works great.
Description of Work: As many in the Va Beach area, we had a drainage problem in the back and side yards. Steve and his crew installed a drain system that wrapped completely around the house. The drainage spouts from the roof gutters were connected into the drain and there are 4 drainage grates in particularly low lying areas. While we were getting this done we also had them install a raised garden bed (about 12' x 3'), remove a tree in the front yard, move around some pampas grass plants, remove a corner bed and flatten out for grass and remove some general debris that had accumulated.

I contacted several companies regarding this work. Very few responded. This is the only company I felt would do the job properly. Steve arrived to review what I wanted done. He patiently answered all my questions. Then he provided a diagram of the work he planned to do to correct my yard issues. Once I decided on A-1, he promptly came out and sprayed to kill the grass/weeds in the yard. After about two weeks, he came out and started the work of rejuvenating my yard. On Day 1, he and his crew (2 men) took down the gate and started removing the dead grass/weeds, etc. from the back yard. They also dug the trench around the entire house and laid the drainage system. On Day 2, they arrived and finished installing the system, cleaned the front and back yard, installed 7 azalea bushes and mulch under my old oak tree in back, tilled and graded all the ground, dug out the stump in the front yard, laid topsoil, fertilized and seeded with fescue. Day 2 was a very long day. They finished the job, cleaned up after themselves, and reinstalled my gate. Steve's gate installation was better than the original install and he actually solved the issue I had with the gate's stability. My yard has never looked level, but now it's great. The yard slopes like it should and water drains properly. In a few weeks, I expect to see lovely cool grass in my yard for the first time since moving in. Thanks Steve! His work was professional, courteous, and well done. He is prompt, patient, and very informative. For the first time in 5 years, I'm excited to have a yard. Yeah!

He said that his price included seeding our lawn twice. When ask to have our lawn seeded the second time he delayed to the point that the weather turned cold and the seeds sown did not germinate. At his inspection he assured me that he would come back in the fall of 2013 and aerate and reseed at no charge. I called him this week to have this work done and he told me that my yard looked good and he could not aerate and reseed at no charge. Our lawn has many bare spots. I was in hopes I was dealing with a man of integrity, which apparently I was not.

Response from A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc
1. In landscaping there is no warranty on seeding lawns. It is up to the customer to follow instructions provided to him by us, and water the lawn. Mr. (member name removed) had a problem with his existing sprinkler system. We replaced a few sprinkler heads for him and adjusted the sprinkler system, for very little cost. He kept calling us about this sprinkler system and we went back 5-6 times to re-adjust the system and put more new sprinkler heads and do more work for no charge, in an effort to make him happy, even though we did not install this system. 2. Every time I went back to adjust and do more work on his sprinkler system, his sprinkler system was shut down and I kept telling him to leave it on and he said I will, I will. Yet his yard was always bone dry. This is why no one gives a warranty on seeding. I kept telling him that he needed to turn his sprinkler system on and take care of the lawn. Even though I continued telling him to turn his sprinkler system on and leave it on, AND I adjusted it for him to work properly, he kept turning it off. He did not follow instructions. 3. I told him his grass would germinate fine if he waters it and I would check it regularly. The customer insisted that I come back in the fall and reseed and aerate. I never told him I would reseed and aerate. I did tell him I would continue to look at his grass. At this point, his grass looks good. I am not doing any more work for free. 4. I am very disappointed with Mr (member name removed) because I thought he was a man of integrity. Clearly, this is a continuous case of wanting something for nothing. I did a lot of work, including labor and materials, for free, just to please him. But I am not going back to his house to do aerating and seeding for no charge. He has a very large yard and the cost runs between $1200-$1500. 5. The customer also had problems with moles. I recommended he do a mole bait treatment. It will take care of the existing moles but not future moles that may come from surrounding yards. I did one treatment for him which he paid for, but he complained 2-3 months later that there were new moles in his yard and he insisted I do another application for free, which I did. I explained to him that he needs to get continuous service for moles or they will come back. This is not a free service. Treatment only kills existing moles but doesn't stop new moles from coming. This is a maintenance that is needed until they are completely gone. I am disappointed that Mr (member name removed) was not satisfied with our service. We did great work for him and did everything we could to please him. We strive to please everyone, as evident from our many reviews, but every once in a while we have a customer who, no matter what we do, is just not going to be happy.

Steve and his team did an excellent job with my backyard. They cleaned the specific area, placed gravel and pavers; put in new mulch and plants. The end result was amazing!! I was so impressed with the job they did, I asked Steve to return to complete the second half of my yard and I can't wait till that project is done. My back yard is becoming to be a little peaceful, beautiful sanctuary thanks to Steve & A-1 Landscaping! Excellent job!! Completely satisfied customer!

I had emailed Mr. Hassan when he was on his vacation. I received a quick response from a lady who called me to let me know that he was on vacation. She asked if I was still interested if I had to wait for his return in August. I told her that I had waited this long and I would wait since he has such a good Angie's List rating. It was worth the wait! Mr. Hassan came out and gave me an estimate that I quickly agreed with. He reported on time with his wonderful team and got the job done- the right way. I feel I have found a landscaper I can count on. I like that he has been in business for so many years and he will be around for future work, unlike so many other so called landscape companies that I have dealt with over the years.
Description of Work: Overall cleaned up the overgrown landscaping that had become my yard. They trimmed and cut back my shrubs, pulled weeds, fertilized, placed mulch, planted a small flower bed...I also had them lay some new sod in a section of my front yard that had been a previous landscaper had laid improperly.

Five weeks ago, we hired Steve Nassan, owner of A-1 Landscaping to do our landscaping, install a concrete sidewalk and, importantly, solve some drainage issues. Although his price was about 35% higher than others, he said he would take all the responsibility for the work of his subs and would be here working every day and planned to do the work in about two weeks. We paid him a deposit of $1,500, and were anxious to get going as we had hundreds of dollars of plants waiting to be planted. He sprayed the grass as it had to die before he could make the flowerbeds or pour the sidewalk. This was not just a job of planting a few bushes, as the drainage issues and sidewalk are things we just did not want to tackle ourselves. He informed us that he would use a sub-contractor for the concrete, and that portion of the quote was about 50% higher than other quotes. In addition, he told us he had a vacation planned and we asked, specifically, "Can you do the work before your vacation?" "No problem."After about 3 weeks, we called and he said the rain had set them back, but he would be at our job "next Monday." When that didn't happen by Friday, he called and said he would be at our job "next week." Thursday, Steve called and told us he would not be able to get the work done until late August as he was going on vacation Monday for two months! At this point, it is too late to hire someone else and so we are trying to do what we can with a bunch of brown grass and plants that are not doing well. The grading and drainage that was the real impetus for our hiring him is still uncertain.Steve was the highest rated landscape company on Angie?s List, he said he could do it, he said he could manage the subs, he said he could do it in the proper time frame. We did NOT find him reliable in the least. He failed and blamed the concrete guy...just not an acceptable response from someone who represented himself as capable and reliable. We fired him and would NOT recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Nothing. He decided to go on vacation for 6 weeks after agreeing to do the work.

Response from A1 Lawn & Landscaping Service Inc
I am very disappointed in [member name removed] review. I had given him 2 estimates, one for landscaping and one for concrete. He hired me first only to do landscaping. He had gotten another estimate for the Concrete job that was only $ 200 lower. Mine was about $ 1600 and his contractor $ 1400, not the 50% difference he indicated. A couple days later he called and told me he changed his mind and want me to do the Concrete work as well. At that time, I had promised him, as he stated, that we would finish his job before going on vacation/ closing. (We close in the summer because it is too hot and not a good season for landscaping.) To do concrete work, the ground has to be dry for a few days. Unfortunately, June never stopped raining. As a result, all my work was delayed. I kept him informed. Shortly thereafter, my concrete contractor quit. Due to the rain, he too was now behind schedule. This occurred one week before closing so I informed my customer. [member name removed] gave me his Concrete contractor’s name and phone # which I kept calling for 3 days and leaving messages. Finally by Friday, I got in touch with a sales person, Danny. We set up an appt for June 17th at 8 am. Unfortunately on Monday at 7 am he called and cancelled because he said it’s small job and they are too busy. I called 3 more contractors from Angie's list and I got nowhere as every one is behind schedule. I hit a dead end and I wanted to make sure I found a good concrete company because they will reflect on my business. So with only 3 more days to close, I informed my customer with what was going on. I apologized to him. I told him its impossible to finish his job in 3 more days especially with the concrete job. I informed him I could finish the landscaping portion before we close and could get the concrete job done when we returned on Aug 10th. He got really upset and said he was going to do it himself and he asked for his $ 1500 deposit back ASAP. I came to his house that same day and returned his money back. I even told him I could bring a couple of my guys to help him do the job and all he has to pay them was their hourly rate. He never responded back. I told him I'm not God and I can't control every thing and I had to leave because I have family overseas and can't delay my trip that was planned months ago.

Absolutely beautiful job. The crew was prompt, courteous and hard-working. Steve really displays a firm and vast knowledge of the kind of work they do and we felt like we were in good hands the whole time. We had a bad experience with this kind of work once, so it was a relief to see the confidence with which this A-1 crew worked.
Description of Work: Dug and laid a cultured stone- paved walkway in our backyard. Also, did some lawn work to rid weeds and seeded.

Steve and his team are very good at what they do. Our yard looks amazing, and we are overall very happy. All employees were very polite and worked very hard, most of all the owner himself. Steve - the owner, is always willing to answer any questions and returns phone calls very timely. I rated the price a good rather than excellent because I do think the price was a little steep in the end. We have one bush that has died on one side, and Steve has agreed to replace the bush, which is great. The rest of the plants are doing well. I had originally rated the price as a B because they were not the lowest of all the bids, but the cost is worth it because they did a great job, the yard looks amazing, and most of all, he contacted me to come back to replace a plant that died. Of course I notified him within a week of the installation to let him know and he said he would keep an eye on it - and he did. This is top notch. Many contractors never return, but Steve is loyal, and cares about his work. We will use Steve again, and as a matter of fact, our neighbors have already used him since our work was completed. Thanks Steve!
Description of Work: Landscaped entire yard, to include sodding the front, extending driveway, new deck in back, ripped out existing bushes - beds, installed new flower beds, and bushes, installed new rock, and assured the yard was leveled. Also installed a drainage ditch for down spouts to drain into and drain to the street.

Steve (the owner) came out the same day to provide an estimate. He seemed very knowledgable and trustworthy and has numerous good reviews on Angie's list. He was on the high side of the other estimates we received, but we went with him because he gave us a better feeling than the other contractors did about quality and reliability. He sprayed killer on the existing (terrible grass) the same day we signed the contract and said he would be back in two weeks to install the sod. He was delayed a week due to a week of rain that got him behind on his other jobs, but he was upfront, honest about the delay and that type of thing is understandable in the Landscaping business. On the day of the install, Steve used a Bobcat to tear up the old grass and roots. The ground was very uneven from the root structure of the old tree and they did a great job grading the soil and leveling it out. 185 cyds of sod was installed and a 6' cherry tree was planted and mulched in about 4 hours. They watered and fertilized the grass before leaving. He had 3 workers with him who were also polite and good workers. He guaranteed the tree for one year, but there was no guarantee on the sod (common). Overall, the service was good, the crew was courteous, they worked quickly, and the quality is outstanding.
Description of Work: Removed a bush, killed existing grass/weeds, removed multiple roots from an old/previously removed tree, graded back yard, installed Tall Fescue sod in back yard, and planted a 6' tall cherry tree.

. As above, Steve did a great deal of high quality work promptly and the job site was spotless upon completion. He personally supervised his workers closely and did a good part of the work himself. We are very pleased and will call him when we have other projects. He gave us excellent care instructions for maintenance. While the price may seem a bit high at first, we feel we got what we paid for and then some.
Description of Work: Excellent provider. After several decades we needed to replace our landscaping. A-1 removed all, but one tree on the side and front yard, created a new design and installed it. We were called out of town unexpectedly, so Steve had to work without consultation. We were delighted with the finished work upon our return. We know nothing about landscaping and don't care to, but we had one absolute requirement: low maintenance. Steve delivered.

I met with this company on Saturday, April 6th to walk through my property. I have about two acres of land and water that needs a significant amount of attention. In other words, I have a lot of potential business for this company. We met for about thirty minutes on April 6th and discussed several near term and long term options. I was told that I would hear something back in 2-3 days; however, it is now two weeks later and I have not heard anything. I have even called and left a message to see the status of my estimate. Nothing. I try to give everyone in the business world the benefit of the doubt; however, I refuse to chase after people to do work for me. If you cannot or do not want to do the work, just give me a call so I can move on to someone else. I have now lost two weeks.

We sincerely apologize to [member name removed]. We take customer service quite serious and understand how disappointing it is to not have companies follow through. We have since called Mr Hubbard and provided him an estimate. We appreciate his understanding and for allowing us the opportunity to rectify the situation. Thank you.
