Description of Work: Found Mottern on Angie's List. Was in need of rapid response to a home inspection report contingency for the sale of our home. Jeff and Guy were at the house within 3 hours of my website outreach. They carefully reviewed the inspector's report, examined the area of concern, provided logical analysis of the questionable diagnosis of the inspector. Identified an appropriate alternative remedy but in their analysis believed that the "problem" was primarily a result of normal settling of a 13 year old home and that proposed repairs would fail again in the future. Provided a written report/consultation and refused my offer of a service call fee.....superior service and superior (prospective future) client relations. The kind of professional and client-centered service that exemplifies the best in the masonry craft.

Description of Work: Mottern put a new concrete coating over some stairs that were in bad shape. Jeff explained the options clearly. I'd use Mottern again!

Description of Work: Mottern Masonary did a wonderful job re-mortaring a stone walkway and two levels of patio with a surrounding wall. Jeff Mottern was responsive to every request. It was reassuring to deal directly with the owner of the company. I would recommend them highly.

Description of Work: Replaced front porch. They were the only stone mason to suggest that we hide the concrete step immediately before the front door. Looks beautiful. And they used a nice thick stone.

Description of Work: My front stoop was collapsing. Some country boys came by and tried to fix it. Money wasted. Mottern were real pros and did a good job for a reasonable price.

Description of Work: Mottern repaired, repointed and waterproofed a badly deteriorated chimney and surrounding masonry. They were great. When my father had a potential problem that maybe needed masonry service at his house I called Mottern. They examined his masonry chimney and advised that it had a few more good years until work would be necessary. We were impressed with their honesty and professional integrity.

Description of Work: They removed the old driveway and walkway and a small patio behind the carport. Replaced the patio in back and installed a colored and stamped walkway and driveway in front. We were very pleased with the work and our whole neighborhood loved it.

Description of Work: Brick paved our concrete steps - about 15 steps in total. Beautiful work; did exactly what we asked be done. Excellent to work with.

Description of Work: I called Mottern for an estimate on replacing my sinking front walk and rebuilding it (and covering my front stoop) with slate. I also asked for an estimate on replacing my driveway and repairing/replacing my back patio. I have been out of town since so I have not scheduled the work, but plan to hire them to do it when I return. Mr. Mottern was polite, arrived early (he called to make sure an early arrival was ok with me), provided a great explanation of the work and all my options, provided me with photos of previous jobs and provided a good written estimate of the work. While they are not inexpensive (and it is not outrageously priced, either), I believe their work is an example of "you get what you pay for." He is extremely customer service oriented and provided options to help the job fit within my budget and to ensure it would have the appearance that I wanted while addressing the fact that the existing walk had sunk from when it was installed 50 years ago. I will write another review after I have the work done. I found out about Mottern on Angie's List.

Description of Work: We needed repairs on a 10 year old flagstone front walkway and side patio, as well as some repointing of a retaining wall. They offer a discount if you agree to a flexible schedule, meaning they will start within the next two weeks, but you do not know the date until the day before. This was not an issue for us because the work was outside and we did not need to be present. They refixed and remortared areas that were loose on the front walk, and completely removed and replaced the stones on the side patio, reusing most of the material but purchasing about $100 of needed stones to replace those too broken to reuse. They also did a few smaller repairs, including removing a few stones from a lightpost that were calcified and replacing them. Everything looks great, the men were very professional, and The price was very reasonable. When Jeff came to give the estimate, he discussed various alternatives and was very honest about the pros and cons of different options. I would certainly use them again.

Description of Work: I called and left a message to see if the company comes as far out as western Loudoun to look at the masonry around our chimney which is letting water into the house. About 10-15 minutes later, I received a callback. Unfortunately, we are out of their service area. They do serve Loudoun County, just not the entire county. Too bad. Just in talking to them on the phone, they had a good attitude about them and it would have been nice to be able to have them come out. But at least they called me back, whereas some companies simply do not care about their reputation and never return a call if they don't want the work or my house is located too far away. While I did not use them, I would surely give them a call if you are within their range..

Description of Work: chimney sweep told me i needed to have entire chimney rebuilt for 3,poo dollars. Mottern did it for $700, as well as a crack in the other chimney at no extra charge. great job.
