Description of Work: Replaced front door and surround and 20 shutters. Aside from the fact that it took longer to get the materials than originally estimated, everything went very well. Workmanship was excellent. Workers were on time, efficient and professional. Project cost was considerably less than other sources. | |Three of the shutters were blown down in high winds in February, but Home Exteriors re-attached them at no cost. | |I would recommend them to other home owners (and have already done so).

Frankly speaking, neither my wife nor I can think of how to better improve the overall experience we had with the three major home improvements we undertook: (1) new windows in the entire house (2) removal and replacement of a 25+ year old deck; and installation of a concrete underslab and flagstone hardscape. The work between the deck builder and the hardscape installation was perfectly coordinated - we kept up our part by doing our due dilligence oversight function and it was a pleasure to watch how well it worked. The deck builder does not finish the deck - we are arranging for the cleaning, sealing and staining of the deck separately. On the window installation, Mark Horner brow-beat the factory that makes the windows to add a new feature to their windows to make the sale to us - we needed mullions that were white on the inside, but matching the exterior, beige color of the mullions, thereby keeping us within the architectual guidelines for our community. The installation of the 23 windows was done in a single day - the team removed our blinds, installed the windows, cleaned up all the debris and vacuumed the floors of our house - we only had to reinstall the blinds. We have had a lot of work done upgrading our townhome (built in 1984) over the past couple of years - Mark Horner of Home Exteriors did us proud - a professional, on-time, on bid job both as a general contractor and for his windows.
Description of Work: We contacted Mark Harmon's company initially to see his high-tech windows. In the process, we told him we also wanted to install a new deck and a hardscape at our townhouse, and he told us that he had relationships with individual artisans and companies that could take care of all our projects, and that he would act as the general contractor, so that our job was only to specify the design and materials, and then be present at home when the work was being done. He did a truely excellent job as the GC for the deck design/builder and the hardscape design/installation compnay (Hadley Concrete) and his crew installed the Energy Star vinyl windows that his company sells. First he obtained a county building permit for the entire project. After we had chosen materials and designs for the deck (wood) and hardscape (concrete slab with overlay of West VA flagstone) the Steve Hadley cleared out the old deck, dug up the existing back yard of our townhouse. FYI, our back yard was the lowest point in our neighborhood, and was normally swampy; because we back to a park the sun only shone on our backyeard for about 4 hours/day, so blue grass wouldn't grow - hence our decision to install hardscape. Because the deck and hardscape teams normally work together the coordination between them was flawless. Steve Hadley installed the concrete pilings to support the new deck posts; and then arranged for the county to inspect the work. Next he prepared the ground for the concrete pour; poured the concrete. Next the deck was built (and Keith Bohler did a beautiful job) and finally, Steve Hadley laid the flagstone. Throughout, all the team showed up when they said they would show up, cleaned up all their construction waste and detritus, and in the heavy rains we've had this spring, proved that Steve Hadley had sloped the hardscape to quickly get the runoff away from the townhouse and into the french drain that our association had built to resolve the water issues for the neighborhood. All concerned in this process communicated well, showed up when they promised, cleaned up the site after each day of work, and completed the work promptly. The only delays were due to rainy weather or our request. You couldn't ask for a better experience with contractors.

Had encountered Home Exteriors Energy Consultants, Inc a year ago when helping a friend shop for doors. Had a very positive first impression of Mark Horner and his business. He is friendly, people oriented and full of energy. With the energy tax incentive, it was time for tackling my own project of replacing doors and siding. HEEC was on my to-call list. Got bids from Mark and 7 other companies represented at the home show at the Dulles Expo. Thankfully it was an easy decision with HEEC customer attention and best pricing. Mark listened to my ideas and did not try to push something above and beyond what has proven to work so nicely. I got not only what I wanted but at price far better than his competition. Day 1 was siding and front door. An all day project. Day 2 the gutters were installed. Day 3 the patio doors were installed - and quite quickly - thankfully as it was a very cold December day and the opening was very large. Really appreciated Mark Horner coming by to check on the project's process and being available to talk to. I highly recommend HEEC, Inc.
Description of Work: Replaced wooden patio French doors and sidelights with steel door and sidelight system closely immitating the original French doors. Replaced wooden front door with Previa cherry finished fiberglass door with leaded windows. Replaced existing vinyl siding, trimmed all exposed wooden trim with vinyl and installed seamless, leaf-protected gutters and downspouts. The finished product is perfect. Amazed at how tight the doors close. The sound quality in the house is even different! Really appreciate having my relatively small project fitted in so qualify for the tax incentive, too.

We have been very impressed with Home Exteriors' work (we used them again)! You work directly with the owner, Mark Horner, in making your selections, and Mark really embraces customers who desire a unique look. We wanted to push our standard ranch house in a more Craftsman direction, and Mark had great suggestions. We went with siding that mimics cedar-shake shingles, which is a very different look than standard siding. It looks great from the street, and several neighbors complimented us on the great new look. Mark and his guys were prompt, neat, and efficient in doing their work. They were careful with our flowers while working in the yard, and they cleaned up any debris in the yard and inside (from the window replacement.) If you get standard siding, Mark works hard to make sure that you don't get that line of seams that makes some other installers' work look cheap. The new windows open and close easily and are easy to clean with the swing-in feature. We wanted to add window boxes for flowers over the siding along our front window, but we were not sure how to anchor them and didn't want to harm the siding. We asked Mark what to do, and he volunteered (for free!) to attach our window boxes through the siding for us so that it would get done right. That was some great service after the sale! Because we had such a good experience with Home Exteriors in 2008, in 2010 we hired them again to replace our plain front door and a large kitchen window. We dug to the back of Mark's catalogs and found a great-looking Craftsman-style door with Arts-and-Crafts leaded glass and three vertical beams running the length of the door. We had an unusual-sized opening for our door and sidelight, and though the manufacturer made a mistake in preparing the door, Mark worked with them to make it right. We love the door and feel it really completes the look we were creating for the house. Mark even carefully saved our unique door knocker from our old door and installed it on our new door for us. Their work was again courteous and efficient, and they are happy to work around your schedule to install your work at the best times for you, rather than asking you to sit around all day waiting for them to show up like some home improvement companies. Home Exteriors does NOT do any hard selling -- they don't pretend that their prices are only good for that day, they don't pretend that whatever you need is the last one in stock, etc. They will give you good, fair prices for good-quality merchandise, they will explain to you the difference between what they offer and lesser-quality merchandise that someone else might offer you for less money, and they will stick to their estimates and not try to upsell you after they have your business. We have really appreciated the good and good-looking work that Home Exteriors has done for us, and we would highly recommend them to other people who are looking for any of the work that they do.
Description of Work: In 2008, Home Exteriors replaced our outdated 60's vertical siding with lovely cedar-shake- shingle style siding, and they also installed 7 replacement windows. The 2008 work cost $15,000. In 2010, they replaced front door with sidelight and a floor-to-ceiling kitchen window. The 2010 work cost $5,000.

The installation went well. When the installers first came to the house though, he didn't have the materials he needed for installing the doors on a brick home so we rescheduled for the next day. There was a problem with the mail slot on the front door and ultimately, Mark Horner had to re-order a new door without a mail slot. To compensate, he paid for a heavy duty mail box and installed it for us! Excellent customer service - I would recommend this company to anyone looking to upgrade their doors.

I picked out a 9-panel steel door (I decided to get steel due to the amount of direct sunlight on this door) from the store's showroom. The original door chosen was a Provia. I already knew they sold Provia doors so had done my research and found this door to be a high quality door. However, there was an issue regarding the size of the door actually on my house (each was 32" wide and 79 1/2' tall). As it turned out I was informed that I could not get doors of this size from Provia. Mark had showed me another 9-panel door from the Camelot line of doors from Northeast Building Products. It looked basically identical. I did attempt to research this company but was unsuccessful within the time i could spend on research. So I accepted some risk related by not having comparative information and eventually made decision to proceed with the purchase as I was running out of time (needing to get installed by end of year to take advantage of tax credit). There were a few glitches the installer ran into when installing the door that as far as I can tell where no fault of installer or the person who measured the door. I did not have the allusion there would be no surprises due to the age of the house. There was one hurdle that had to be negotiated due to the door opening not being square. One minor one related to the color of the caulking not matching the door color (Home Exteriors custom ordered a matching blue color and sent out the installer to re-caulk around the exterior frame. Anyway, the installer did a fine job in the customization required for this installation to be successful. I think his skills as a furniture maker came into play here. There was an issue pertained to the door itself that was resolved by Northeast Building Products (who sent out their Director of Sales to personally inspect the door). What risk I accepted in the purchase by not being able to do a comparative analysis of the door manufacturer appears to be a non issue at this point in time. All in all, both Exterior Home Energy Consultants and Northeast Building Products stood behind their product/service. The door looks good, has a snug feel to it (when opening or closing) and importantly is more energy efficient.

From start to finish we got quality, quality, quality: not just in the products purchased, but in the service as well. I wouldn't hesitate to use them for ANY outdoor housing project you may have.
Description of Work: We had new windows installed as well as new leaf-guard gutters and downspouts. We love this company! Completely professional and well-priced. Moreover, they beat anyone's time (2 weeks from order to install!). Mark, the owner, is an incredible source of knowledge and a true expert. He nearly beat everyone's price, and completely beat everyone's estimated timeline. The slight increase we paid over another quote was more than worth it as we had professional, courteous installers. Our house, inside and outside, was as clean as it was before they came. I would recommend them for ANY outdoor housing projects and fully intend to use them for any additional outdoor housing projects that we may have in the future. Call them and feel good that you are getting an A+ product AND service.

They were awesome and I loved them. I spent around $4,000 on that work. After everything was finalized and the windows were delivered, the fee that I paid was what they had promised me it would be. They said that someone would come and do the measurements and install the windows and the two people that came out to do the measurements and installation showed up on time and did the work and left. They also showed me how to use the windows, but later on, I had some problem operating the windows, so I called the office. The owner called me back and walked me through the steps. I actually regret not having done two additional windows and I am getting ready to do those too.

The window installation went as planned - about two weeks later. The installation crew was professional, prepared, and cleaned up after themselves (there was plenty of that to do on this job). They did a good job on the details related to caulking and capping (vinyl woodgrain PVC). Overall there were no installation issues other than the need to replace two lower window sashes that were defective at factory (cracked glass and gauge in handle). These defects were examined by Mark himself when he was checking on the job; he called them in himself while on the job. Approximately two weeks later after the windows arrived at Thermal Industries office, I was called by their representative to schedule the delivery and installation which was done today to my satisfaction. I want to point out that in talking with my two of my neighbors who had their windows installed by two different competitors, that in both cases they were happy with the initial install but were not happy with defect resolution. In both cases they waited over two years for final resolution. I was very satisfied in my case this phases took about 3 weeks from start to finish.
Description of Work: The owner of the company, Mark Horner, arrived at my house with the same day I called for an estimate. He came prepared with a brochure with company background, product information, etc and was able to show me the salient features of the vinyl window his company proposed to install (Thermal Industries #530 replacement windows). I like the fact I was working with someone who has a financial stake in their service and claimed to stand behind all phases of the process: measurement, ordering, installation, and support (if needed). At the end of the meeting, Mark provided me a very competitive estimate for the 22 windows replacements. There were a couple of differences between this company and three other competitors. Included in my brochure was a list of approximately 45 contacts. I did actually contact four people on the list and they all were pleased with their windows and made statements that Mark delivered what he said he would deliver, on time and without any installation issues. One other differentiator is that the windows would only take 2 weeks from time of order to delivery to his office (an important consideration for this time of the year). The competitors I got estimates from stated delivery was 6-10 weeks which puts the installation in mid June, likely too hot to enjoy the windows until Fall.
