Disaster response failed to give an estimate after it's inspectors came out....After reading the good reviews on Angie's list, I contacted Disaster Response regarding a smaller job for water damage to a ceiling from a whole in my roof. I called on a weekend and was called promptly Monday morning. The representative arranged for a ceiling evaluator to come out the next morning, and roofer the next day. I received a follow-up call after the morning ceiling evaluation and was told they were very busy but would have an estimate for me the following Tuesday -- a week later. By next Tuesday, no call, so when I called asking for the estimate, the rep said they'd get it later that day. They followed up the following day (Wednesday) to say the roofer never inspected the roof and they would look into it quickly. Since then (now 2 weeks later), I never received a follow-up call on what happened to the roofer, an estimate, or explanation. Not sure what happened but bottom line, Disaster Response was prompt with coming out to inspect, but failed to even follow-up with an estimate. Very disappointing.
Description of Work: Requested estimate for water damage to ceiling and roof.

Dear Member, We are sorry we were unable to get your free estimate to you in a timely manor. Unfortunately the Duratio increased our call volume by 10 fold. After your initial free mitigation inspection we thought it best to refer (as a courtesy) a roofing sub-contractor, to inspect your home and work up an estimate for your roof problem. We do this to assist home owners at no cost. We are sorry to hear that the contractor did not come out for your free inspection (what we require from all partner companies). We hope your roofing issue has been addressed, if not let me know, and I will personally oversee the processes required to properly restore your home. Thank you, Thomas Mitchell President Disaster Response Inc.

see above It's hard to give them a grade because half of the work was done superbly and the other part was not performed so well.
Description of Work: This company does a lot - and some of it really well. We have had them do water remediation for us twice now and there's probably nobody better out there. The problems occurred when they offered to close up the hole in the ceiling and do some repair/renovation work in the bathroom where the leak had occurred. They are not as expert in construction work as they are in water damage repair. The workmen did not arrive when they were supposed to and did not do the job they promised. Tom is excellent at water damage issues and has great people. Dave tried hard to give us quality work on the construction end, but his peopel were less quaified. They came back several times to fix things that were not done well, including two trips to deal with the finish that had been stripped off of the wood floors when they pulled up the tape that was holding down the paper runner put down to eliminate dirt being tracked in.) They offered to come back a third time and work on the floors some more, but we declined. In sum - DO use them for water remediation. Be cautious about using them for bathroom renovation that's probably better left to companies who do exactly that kind of work.

Excellent service, excellent response. Used tools to measure moisture levels and look for any other areas that might be affected by the backup. Owner called me back personally and helped me find a good plumber to clear the blockage. He was empathetic and professional, because I definitely felt he understood how difficult it is to go through something like this.
Description of Work: Responded promptly and were very empathetic with our little disaster (sewer backup) in our basement. Removed the affected flooring, baseboard, and drywall in the basement and disinfected the floor. Placed fans and industrial dehumidifiers to dry out the rest of the basement--which stayed for several days to completely clean up the mess.

If you are in trouble, don't bother calling Disaster Response Inc. This company advertises response with in 90 minutes. It is over 48 hours later and they still have not responded. We had a flood at 2 AM, I called around 3AM the same day, then again around 8 AM. Water damage must be dealt with immediately, they still have not responded. If you are in trouble, don't bother calling Disaster Response Inc.

Dear Member, We are sorry you did not get your free estimate in a timely manor. We have discontinued overnight service for non priority contract customers. Unfortunately we have had too many "thanks, but I want to speak to my insurance company first". Of course the insurance company is not open at 3:00am, so our certified technician goes home and has to work the next day on 2 hours of sleep. We have recently made changes to our website to lower future expectations that are (at times) ridiculously unfair. Please keep in mind that we are not the fire department or a public utility. We are a privately-owned company, and we decide who we work for. Our track record of success for those we have contracted with speaks for itself. So to lets recap the facts: Before you placed your rant, no one from my company ever spoke to you. We never promised you anything. You never paid us a penny and we did nothing to cause your damage. Your anger is unfair and unreasonable. I am so happy you found someone else to help you! Regards, Thomas Mitchell President Disaster Response Inc.

Our home sustained major structural damage during a wind/storm event mid October 2011. Our first phone call was to 911, second to our insurance company CHUBB, who recommended Disaster Response, Inc. With two large oak trees crushing a significant part of our roof line and attic, water was pouring into our home from several openings. Tom Mitchell of Disaster Response, Inc dispatched a representative immediately to assess the situation. Adam from Disaster Response quickly helped my husband secure the furnishings in the family room to mitigate the water damage and we vacated our home for the night. Daylight brought Tom Mitchell and the tree experts and by nightfall the trees were off the roof and the next day Disaster Response secured plywood and tarps to our roof, removed the damaged drywall from the affected ceilings and fans and a generator were installed to start the drying process. We were so pleased with the quickness of Tom Mitchell's response to our problem and with his knowledge and professionalism.. Because of the scope of the damage to the middle of our one level ranch home, we took the opportunity to do a major remodel as well as repair. Tom Mitchell and his team were very patient as we worked with both our insurance assessor and our architectural design firm. Tom Mitchell has a top notch team which included Tina from the main office, John Levan from the engineering department and our "super" general contractor , David Loos, who was very "hands on" and supervised a large group of subcontractors. Dave anticipated and responded to all sorts of situations and we felt our home was in very capable hands. Six months and one week after our disaster we were back into our newly remodeled home. Final details were quickly finished several weeks later but we were home! Disaster Response did an outstanding job in making our dream plans a reality
Description of Work: Disaster Response, Inc mitigated the damage to our home after the storm. They did this quickly and efficiently. Our kitchen was secured to prevent more damage and many cabinets and appliances were carefully removed and reinstalled six months later. Our house was almost a complete pack out and Tom Mitchell arranged for that as well. They worked with our architect when we decided to remodel as well as repair. We added a new foyer and new an improved family room with a raised ceiling. Disaster Response was able to assemble of team of experienced subcontractors to do all the structural engineering, the roofing, outside trim work, flagstone repair, and major brick repair. The interior of our home was repaired and finished by a group of drywall, woodworking, painting men who quickly made the house like new. We were very impressed with the quality of the work, the integrity of Tom Mitchell and Disaster Response, Inc. The excellent supervision by David Loos, the general contractor assigned to us was instrumental in keeping us sane during this disruption to our lives. He always answered all of our questions and worries and he emailed us picture updates to cheer us on! He was great. We would certainly use them again but we hope we never have too!

I liked Tom from Disaster Response and believe that he is very knowledgeable. However, despite an address on Lombard St and a local phone number, they are really located in Chantilly Virginia. If you are comfortable with a long distance contractor, then I certainly think that Tom and Disaster Response might be worth checking out.

Dear Member, Thank you for your review and we hope you have resolved your complex environmental issues. In your case we invested in excess of 16 hours trying to help you at no charge, and this only rates as a "B" ? With regard to your comments about our corporate offices being located in Sterling Va. We have found that with increasing traffic delays (which lead to service delays), that we have been able to improve response times by dispatching employees directly from their home. In your case we have employees in both Baltimore County and Howard County to minimize response times and maintain our high level of service. Thank you, Thomas Mitchell President Disaster Response Inc.

There was a sewer backup that flooded part of my basement that required some work to clean up after the backup was fixed, so I decided to find some professionals to make sure no corners were cut after I got rid of the initial mess and extracted the carpets. Within 2 hours of calling on Saturday morning, there was a technician at my house to evaluate the situation. He was very knowledgable and explained exactly what needed to be done with respect to the type of flooding. He had the tools with him to detect how far the moisture had gone in the carpet pad even if the surface was dry and if there was any moisture in the drywall. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to provide me with an official estimate to get the work done because there wasn't anyone at the office that could run the numbers until Monday morning. He could have started working immediately, but I would have had to sign a blank work order with no range of pricing at all. After he left, I decided this is the type of situation that I couldn't wait a couple days to handle, so I ended up going another route. The company did contact me Monday morning, as promised, to follow up and provide an official estimate, but I had already gotten much of it completed by then. Although I didn't get the work done by the company, I would still recommend their services. I trusted the technician that came to my house could get the job done well, they were very responsive and able to get someone out to my house quickly, and they followed up exactly when they said they would. The only reason I didn't use them was their estimate procedure falls apart a bit for weekend emergency work since they don't have someone in the office that can provide them on the weekend. Overall, still a good experience, and I appreciated the amount of knowledge the person had that came to my home.
Description of Work: There was a sewer backup that flooded part of my basement that required some work to clean up after the backup was fixed, so I decided to find some professionals to make sure no corners were cut after I got rid of the initial mess and extracted the carpets. It turns out that part of the carpet, portions of the drywall in a couple parts, and a few baseboards near the utility room needed to be removed. Afterwards, a chemical treatment needed to be applied, and air movers / fans and a dehumidifier needed to be rented and put in place for a while.

Everything went very smoothly. All work was completed -- and phone calls were returned -- promptly.
Description of Work: After our washing machine overflowed, damaging wood floors and soaking insulation in our crawl space, we spoke with Tom Mitchell, who explained everything in detail over the phone - costs, what would be needed, and choices we could make to keep costs down. Disaster Response brought in fans and floor heaters to dry everything up. Tom came after the work was done and explained what was needed to repair the damage (which was necessary, as getting our insurance adjustor to acknowledge the need for repair was nearly impossible). Tom also gave us a generous AL member discount.

They came, they evaluated, they died it up. Game over. Great work.
Description of Work: Tom Mitchell is a true professional and gentleman. He dispatched a technician almost immediately and personally followed up on the initial proposal to dry out our crawl space that was wet due to a pin sized leak in some copper piping. He also made it a point to show me areas that needed attention that did not directly involve the services that he was there to perform. As a result, I believe that the outcome was far superior to what we would have experienced had we been working with someone that was not willing to be very compenhensive in their assessment of the situation.

The damage was discovered at 9:00 p.m. We called two companies. Disaster Response called back within ten minutes (the other firm did not call until the next morning). Tom, the owner, said that a technician would arrive between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. He requested that we move as much out of the affected area as we could easily do. At 10:30, the technician called to say he was on his way. He arrived just before 11:00 p.m., determined the extent of the damage, provided an estimate, moved furniture, pulled up a portion of the carpeting, and installed fans. He explained exactly what the process is, including that fans would be in place for at least three days (if all was not dry after three days, the fans and a dehumidifier would remain in place for longer, at no extra charge), and said he would return at 9:00 or 9:30 the following morning. At 10:00 a.m. the next day, I called because he had not arrived. The woman who answered the phone checked and said he had been delayed and would be arriving momentarily, which he did. He brought a helper, a water extractor, a dehumidifier, and more fans. They worked for several hours. When he did not return when he said he would on the third day, I again called the office, which told me there was an emergency. He did come to check either later that day or the fourth day, saying that the office was to have contacted me to notify me. The fans and dehumidifier remained for several more days (including a weekend). The technician returned on the following Monday to remove the equipment and to clean and disinfect the carpet. It looks good as new. The work was excellent. The technician, Adam Spencer, was courteous, well-spoken, professional, and diligent. There is no evidence of water damage whatsoever. My only criticism is an apparent lack of communication between Adam and the office and the office and me. No one contacted me to say that he would be delayed, as he was on two occasions, although each time Adam claimed that the office was supposed to have called me. This was not a big problem for me because I work out of my home. If I had to go to an office or other workplace each day, I would have been badly inconvenienced, at a minimum. The issue of punctuality is less that the technician did not arrive promptly than that no one notified me--each time I called the office. He also also told me that the estimate would be typed and emailed. I received no emails until I called, after the work had been completed, to request the invoice. The amount I paid was decreased by an Angie's List discount. Moreover, there was no extra charge for either the additional time or an extra fan (a total of six).
Description of Work: Disaster Response extracted water that had seeped into the basement from an exterior faucet that had been left open. The firm dried the wall-to-wall carpet, carpet pad, and floor beneath.

Disaster Response was very quick to come by the house and do an evaluation. It took them a little while longer to complete the work than we expected. But, I think they had a very busy schedule. The contaminated areas of the house had to be quarantined longer than we expected which delayed the rebuilding work. Overall they did a good job.

My tentants notified me that the carpet in the basement was wet and it was beginning to smell. I search around for companies to help remediate the situation. I found that some weren't using the technology available (for instance using moisture detection technology to determine if drywall is wet rather than puncturing drywall with pins to determine)..had one even tell me that those tools are too expensive and no one uses them! Disaster Response Inc. was very responsive and uses the technology that I was looking for. They pulled out wet carpet and pad, treated with anti-microbial and left fans, de-humidifiers and air scrubbers in space for 3 days. They were very punctual and easy to work with. I live out of state and was very impressed with how they communicated with me every step of the way. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cost. I would definitely recommend!

I called because we have noticed water damage but have not identified the source. I was informed that they do not really identify source, they repair the water damage after the source has been resolved. However, he agreed to come out the next day between 11 and 2. My husband had already taken the day off to work on another project in the house, so he and two other adults (plus my two children) were in the house all day long, never leaving. No one showed up. No one called the house, my cell, or my office. The following week, when I still hadn't received a call explaining the failure to appear, I called to find out what happened. I was told that he went to the house and no one was there. Since there were a host of people in the house the entire day, that's obviously not true. Either it's a lie, or he went to the wrong house. Either way, I asked why he didn't call when he got there and found no one home, to find out whether he was at the wrong house or why there was no one there. The woman who answered the phone told me she didn't know why he didn't call, that is the normal procedure. She offered to set up another time for him to come out, but I wasn't interested in taking a day off work to sit around and wait for someone who would not show up, especially since this is somewhat outside their area of expertise. She apologized, but I didn't feel like I got any kind of reasonable explanation for what happened, and the owner, who was the one who was actually supposed to show and didn't, still has never called to give any explanation or apology. I appreciate that he was doing me a favor in offering to come out and see if he could identify the source of the water, but the fact that he never showed and never called demonstrates a lack of reliability, responsibility, and customer service. As a result, I would not recommend this company.

Response from DR Restore
Dear Member, As you stated, my company could not assist in the larger task required at your home. General repairs and handyman work is outside our area of focus. We are, however, very good at diagnostic analysis. Despite the fact that we would not generate revenue on your diagnostic request, I told my office make an appointment so that I could inspect the envelope of your house. By policy, we ask that all free inspections be assigned a window of arrival and that the property owner be available when we call 30-45 minutes ahead of our arrival. Efficiency allows for our no cost consultative visits by working them into our paying customer routes. The appointment was set for an arrival window of 11-2 PM, at that time you told me your husband would be home to meet me. When the appointment was set, you were also told that we would call 30-45 minutes ahead to confirm our arrival. My phone records indicate that I called your home at 1:17 PM and again at 1:22 PM both calls where two minutes in length. I was unable to reach your husband, or any other person who could meet me at your home. I left two messages on the device that answered my call at the number you provided. Unable to reach anyone I proceeded to go to my next appointment. In total, I spent an hour and a half of my valuable time attempting to provide you with a free inspection of your property. That my goodwill has been returned with your negative feedback is disappointing to say the least. I wonder how you would respond, if a person you have never met called you at your place of business and identified their problem in an area of your expertise, making it clear that no financial transaction would occur. Would you work without pay for an hour and a half? This proposition is identical to what happened in our relationship. I invested my time to create good will for my company with no expected opportunity for direct financial gain. That Friday afternoon I made the decision to have my staff call you back in order understand why you missed our appointment and to give you the benefit of the doubt, not because I wanted one more opportunity to loose an hour and a half of my time. We are fortunate to be experiencing incredible growth, in large part because we respond to the call for help regardless of the short term profit opportunity. Angie's List members appreciate this. We continue to add amazing people to our team and expect to grow again this year. We have grown both revenues and reputation by requiring the following from every one of our employees, honesty, integrity and fairness. We expect the same from our customers in return. While you are not a customer of my company, I expected better treatment for my attempt to help you manage your problem. Regards, Thomas Mitchell President Disaster Response

This company did all we needed and more. They called on their way to confirm their arrival, they allowed us to keep the dryer fan since the leak was persistent and we needed to do additional work before the cleaning could be completed and they were prompt and easy to work with. Hopefully we won't need their services again, but if we do, I would not hesitate to work with this company again. They were amazing!

The work was performed well. The "B" grade in responsiveness had to do with the length of time to get the estimate, then to have the workers arrived to perform the work, and finally the fans and negative air treater were left for a whole week (and I had to call to ask when they would be taken away - but they did not increase the rental charge from the three days originally agreed to). I think that because the third day fell on a weekend (in late October, when we had rain and the first snow), they decided to not come pick up the equipment. Quality: "A". The basement was left pretty clean, and the negative air and disinfectant removed all unpleasant smells that were associated with whatever mold was developing under the laminate flooring. Punctuality: "A". They came at the time they said they would, even a little early, on the days they were doing the work. Price: "B". While it seemed high to me, my insurance company said it was within the normal range. Professionalism: "A". The estimator had provided an excellent analysis of what was needed, with each item broken into its subcomponents, which was valuable as I had to submit it to my insurer. The workmen provided a zippered door-seal so the basement air purification would work, but also so we could get into the basement to get access to (for example) Halloween supplies while the air treatment was ongoing. I hope I never have another need for their services, but I would use them again if it happens (and they are available - I understand they were pretty busy after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.) The only thing I was surprised at was that they did not attempt to re-contact me to offer to fix the drywall, carpet and flooring - they did good work removing and cleaning, but missed the opportunity to offer to fix it - so I cannot comment at all on their quality of repair work.
Description of Work: After water damage from Tropical Storm Lee flooded our basement, we needed to have the laminated wood flooring removed from our basement - as the main service. We also had a smaller room where the padding under the carpet needed to be replaced, and several areas where drywall needed to be replaced. The estimator came out in late September and provided us a multipage estimate slightly more than $5k. It included tearout of the laminated floor and padding, removal of the lowest foot of drywall on 18' of interior wall, removal of the carpet padding, cleaning of the carpet, application of disinfectant (in case the muddy water had brought bacteria with it), and then three days of "negative air treatment" with giant fans and some kind of air purifier which sucked the air into a big filter.

They were very responsive, and arrived within 4 hours after my initial call. I had an estimate within 30 minutes and then two workers worked for 8 hours to remove all the wetl, moldy stuff. They then applied an anit-microbial agent. The house smelled so much better almost instantly! I would definitely recommend them to clean up water-damage. I had hoped I could also hire them to restore the basement -- another service they provide. But, the next week, the area was hit with an earthquake, a week after that a hurricane, and a week later, remnants of another hurricane that left flooding rain. So, they got booked. I probably waited too long before looking for someone else to restore the basement for me, but they kept telling me they would get me an estimate "this week." Four weeks after the initial work, the owner came out to examne the damage and take measurements for the esitmate to do all the repair work. He said I'd have an estimate the next day. Three weeks later, i still don't have an estimate. So, definitely use them for the initial water damage and mold removal, but I'd recommend looking elsewhere for someone to repair the room once the water and mold have been removed.
Description of Work: I came home from a business trip to find the recent rains had flooded the basement. The basement was fully finished, and the carpeting was soaked. I was hoping the carpet could be dried out, but it turned out that the carpeting, baseboards, and some drywall had to be removed. They had an infrared sensor that could show what areas of the basement were damp, and it was a lot more than I'd previously thought. In addition to removing all the wet and moldy stuff, they left huge fans and a dehumidifier in my basement for 5 days and treated all surfaces with an antimicrobial agent.

Dear Member, I am sorry that you did not get your free estimate in a timely manner. Record rainfall created a huge need for disaster recovery services. We can appreciate the need for quick information and action since this is key to minimizing damage and risk. Unfortunately the volume of calls was so great that we temporarily changed our greeting during this storm period. It stated the following: 1. "We are experiencing service delays that are in excess of one week, however we are happy to take your information and we will call you when we able to provide service." 2. It also said, "We recommend that you call other service providers and get on there list as well." We were certainly upfront about the limits of our ability to provide service. Massive power outages and numerous homes with tree (structural) damage further complicated recovery efforts. Many of our customers required more than 6-8 visits to monitor conditions or address complicating factors. We finally did catch up and called everyone on the list at least twice. You may or may not have been one of the homeowners that did not answer their phone. I hope you you were successful in your recovery efforts. Thank you, Thomas Mitchell President Disaster Response Inc.

I was quite pleased with them. Their estimate was pretty accurate, they were very responsive to my initial phone call, and their pricing was competitive.
Description of Work: We had a drain in the laundry room that clogged and flooded the basement so Disaster Response snaked the pipe, pulled up the carpet, dried it, replaced the padding, and laid the carpet back down.

After returning home to a flooded basement on a Wednesday evening, my wife called Disaster Response Inc to get an estimate for flood damage recovery. Given the amount of flooding in the VA/DC/MD area and the very young age of the business, I presume that Disaster Response has never seen call volume of this sort before. Therefore, I am completely understanding that they can not honor the listed 90 minute arrival time due to the unprecedented (in their history) amount of flooding. We were never called by the dispatcher on that Wednesday night. So, on Thursday morning, I stayed home from work and put in another call. I was told that they would alert the dispatcher again. Note that, at this point, I was never told that it would take longer than 90 minutes. I would certainly be understanding if that was the case, but was never told. I called back again, 90 minutes later, and was now told that it could take longer than normal to have a representative out at my house. At this point, it had been over 12 hours. Presumably they should have known they were overbooked well before this and let me know so I didn't waste vacation time staying home for someone who wouldn't show up. I didn't get that call until Thursday afternoon. Still no idea when they could make it out, but they would call me later that day when they had scheduled a time. At this point I started to seriously wonder at the professionalism of the company, but still wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt given the amount of flooding in the area. So Thursday comes to a close, and still no call. On Friday I call yet again and am told that not only do they have no idea when they can come out, but don't even know when they'll know. Needless to say, it has been nearly two weeks since the original call and I have never received a call back from them. Certainly there is some slack to be had given the (presumed) amount of call volume they received, but I still expect some basic level of consideration and professionalism that was obviously lacking. I can not give a recommendation for Disaster Response Inc given their poor response.

I spent around $1000 on that work. They were punctual and were incredibly responsive. The work started off during business hours and then moved into after hours. Even though it was a horrible thing to have water in the basement, they did a great job with pulling the molding around the drywall and making sure that the water had not gotten to the drywall and carpet driers. When they noticed that the carpet driers were not doing their job, they replaced it with units that were incredibly functional and did a stellar job in drying the carpet in the basement. If it was not for their professionalism, quickness to respond and the equipment that they had, we would have had to replace some carpet in the basement. But because of their actions, we did not have to.

We waited a couple of days for the fans because the room flooded after a big rain, but they were responsive and came when they said they'd be here. We had a great experience with them and would trust them if we had another problem with flooding.
Description of Work: Our office flooded and Disaster Response came out to test the room and discovered water under the carpet and in the walls. They removed carpet and molding, dried the room with industrial fans, and recommended a warehouse to buy carpet at wholesale prices and a contractor to lay the carpet.
