I don?t really know how to rate DS Patterson, because my experience with Julie, who runs the office, was A+, and my eventual experience with the owner, David, was A+ as well. I wish I could rate them separately from Hugo, the person who did the work. Before I go into details below, I want to emphasize that in the end the owner (David) offered to let me pay only the amount that I thought was fair for the job, given all the problems I had. I thought this was incredibly generous on his part. I was willing to pay $800 of the original $1025 initial bid, so obviously I was fine with most of the work that was done. In mid-May, I contacted DS Patterson for an estimate on three things: drywall repair on my master bedroom closet; painting a hall bathroom, and drywall and painting for a garage wall. Julie in the office was a pleasure to deal with, both on the phone and via email. Hugo came and gave an estimate. I asked him to break down the estimate to specifics, and it was $675 for the closet and garage drywall repair; $125 for bathroom painting; and $225 for garage wall painting. I thought the estimate was very reasonable and I liked Hugo, so I sent in my deposit, and contacted Julie for scheduling. At that point she told me there would be a 4 week delay in scheduling. When I told her I was disappointed because she had initially said 2 weeks, she told me that they had an unexpected large job come up. However, she offered to check with Hugo to see if he would do the job over evenings and weekends so he could come sooner, which I thought was really nice. Hugo came and did the master bedroom closet drywall, which came out great. He painted the hall bathroom, which was adequate, but not great. The problem came with the garage wall. I think because he was working evenings and weekends on our job, he tried to rush the garage wall. Coordinating our schedules was difficult and I think he was too eager to be done with the job. On one rainy night, in four hours, he put on two coats of kilz primer and two coats of white paint. He told me he was finished, and I was shocked when I came out to the garage. It looked terrible, the color was uneven, the wall looked striped with beige and white. I gave him a check for the full amount but told him I was extremely disappointed. Instead of taking responsibility, he gave excuses?it was because the drywall was old and because I wanted white paint (neither of which he mentioned as potential problems when he gave the estimate). The next day I called the kilz primer company. They said you need to wait a minimum of several hours between each coat of kilz and each coat of paint in dry conditions. (Hugo had done all 4 coats in 4 hours under rainy conditions). Hugo also did a poor job with the drywall in the garage, with gouges, bumps, and missed areas. I wrote to Julie about my concerns. In the end Hugo came back to fix the drywall in the garage. That time he did a perfectly fine job on the drywall. He still made excuses about how the paint job came out, again blaming the age of the drywall, the paint color I chose, and the fact that I wanted latex and not oil paint. When I pressed him that it was his role to tell me these issues at the time of the estimate, he finally admitted it was his fault. As I noted above, David, the owner, said I only had to pay whatever I thought was fair, and I paid for everything but the garage wall painting. Eventually my husband re-did the painting job, following the manufacturer?s instructions for waiting time between coats of primer and coats of paint. It looked great. The problems had nothing at all to do with the age of the drywall or the paint color; it was because Hugo rushed the job. If you look at other reviews on Angie?s list, you?ll see my experience was atypical (although there is one other reviewer who thought they did a better job on drywall and not a great job on painting). I think Julie is incredibly nice, and David?s offer was extremely generous. I would suggest if you do use them that you do not use Hugo for painting.

Overall went well. Mr Patterson came himself promptly repaired the wall and did a wonderful. Professional job.

Mr. Patterson assessed damage and prepared a bid. Scope of damage was a little more than he estimated and repaired more labor on his part. He charged $100 over original estimate, which I thought was fair.

Scheduling was quick and the price was competitive. I had several small jobs that I wanted done but the main job was plastering up some drywall and painting. I also had a fan install, smoke detector, more sanding and drywall work and while the workers were here, my toilet started leaking. They repaired that too.

They were punctual. The estimate was very easy. He did a great job on the drywall but I wasn't extremely enthusiastic about the painting. In hindsight, I shouldn't have hired them for painting because they're known for drywall but they said they could do it all. The drywall portion was definitely an "A" but it's not that good on the painting or the trim work. The price was very reasonable because I got three bids and they were the best value; they weren't the lowest but they weren't the highest. I would use them again but only for drywall.

We had a great experience with DS Patterson! When John DePriest came to do the free estimate he understood that we didn't want to break the bank and spend money unnecessarily - he told us that the old floor was a great base for the new floor so we didn't have to tear it up and it would cost much less than other companies wanted to charge us. On the day of work he showed up right on time and did it all as planned. Installed/set it one day and returned the next day to re-set the toilet/vanity. When there were a few small things we wanted touched up he came back no problem to fix them. Great experience and great value and we would highly recommend them!

Completed on schedule and budget

One of my bedrooms had the ceiling collapse. We had a different company clean up the mess and remove the furniture. Patterson was hired to put in a new ceiling and reinforce another bedroom. The crew did an excellent job. Started on time as promised and finished ahead of time. They protected the furniture, rugs etc in the additional bedroom and cleaned up the work area when finished. Both rooms now look great.

Work was very well done and finished on the day designated. Very professional job, including removing hazardous waste from our old house. Always arrived by the time promised. The bill was calculated by the day but Mr. Patterson was not always there more than half a day. Maybe this is necessary in this kind of work but if so we would have liked to have had that explained to us. Mrs. Patterson, who serves as customer telephone contact person, is thoroughly charming and efficient.

DS Patterson came highly recommended. He was personable and professional. His work was of the highest quality. I was very well impressed.

David was punctual, knowledgeable and professional. He takes pride in his work, is very neat. He is a pleasure to work with.

My husband and I hired this firm because of its outstanding reviews on Angie's List. I can only echo what all the other reviewers have said: This company gets an A+ in every regard. Our house was built in 1937. Our problem was that the plaster ceiling in a bedroom and hall and the plaster on one wall next to the stairs were "dimpling" (a word that other reviewers used and described our situation exactly) and some of the plaster was actually falling on the floor! Hugo, the longtime employee of this company, came out to give us an estimate (we got two other estimates, but both of those companies wanted to replace the cracks in the plaster with wallboard...) and then came back to do the work himself. Everything turned out perfectly! One aspect of the job that was especially satisfying (and very unusual) was that Hugo, at the end of each of the three days he worked here, had me walk around with him, and look at each area that he had repaired/painted, asking me, "Is this OK? Is this what you expected?" I've never dealt with a workman before who was so determined to have me evaluate his work every step of the way. Finally, I must say, as others have noted before me, that Julie Patterson is one of the sweetest and most efficient "go-between s that I've ever had the pleasure to work with. If we ever have a plaster problem again, we will certainly turn to D.S. Patterson.

Dave came out quickly and gave me an estimate. It was a bit over my budget and he worked with me to get it down a bit. He arrived on time and did a great job. He sectioned off his work so there was no dust in other areas. Thorough clean up. A real professional!.

I hired DS Patterson based on Angie's List to do two jobs: 1) Repair dining room ceiling where an upper-floor water spill had leaked down, showing water damage at the seams of the part of ceiling drywall; and 2) Tape, mud, finish and sand a major do-it-yourself basement remodel. This included walls, ceilings and stairwell, approx. 1200 sq ft of finished space and approx. 4500 sq ft of drywall that had been framed, electrical and plumbing installed, and drywall hung. I had already pulled all close-in permits. First, made contact via email with Julie, who was terrific... gave me accurate and specific scheduling info for estimate visit and when they would be able to schedule the actual work, and handled all the contracting deails by email (my preferred way to do it). The company was completely flexible allowing me to add details to their proposed contract to make sure everything I thought was important was incorporated. Very professional, start to finish. Hugo Luizaga did my estimate, and performed the work with his co-worker Jose. At the estimate, Hugo told me exactly what he would do, looked carefully at my plans, walked through the job with me, and asked specific questions to make sure he had all the details of what I wanted done. It was clear that this guy was very passionate about doing quality work, and he was such a personable guy on top of it that I was happy to offer them the work. I am very glad I did. Hugo and Jose worked in my house for approx. 6 working days. They arrived punctually every day, worked diligently all day, and always left the working space clean. I was completely happy with all aspects of their work, and Hugo and Jose were the kind of professional and trustworthy craftsman you are glad to have in your house. My basement finish was $4500 (exactly as quoted) and the ceiling repair (re-taping and re-mudding the water damaged seams, no drywall had to be replaced) was $285. With a little paint, the ceiling repair is 100% invisible... the ceiling is again smooth and perfect. The basement walls and ceilings are smooth and evenly finished. Again, I am completely happy with the work and the price. I would happily recommend this company to family or friends.

Mr Patterson came out and gave us a fair estimate of the work. We checked out some other plasters, but I was most impressed with Dave. We scheduled the work over two days and Dave arrived punctually at the agreed time and worked through the each day until the job was done. He protected the area he was working and cleaned up after he was done. I have not painted yet, but I cannot see where the holes were in the plaster before the work.

Our recently purchased home, built in 1920, had developed a dimple - which over months became a sizeable hole - in in our plaster ceiling on the 2nd floor. As the weather got colder, more pieces would break away, leaving a large gape in the plaster ceiling as well large paint pieces that had peeled away and were hanging. ): We were so fortunate to find D.S. Patterson in our Angies List search, based on their high reviews. We sent them a photo of the work and immediately Julie Patterson contacted us to schedule an estimate for the upcoming weekend. Dave arrived promptly for the estimate, and was extremely courteous, professional, and thoughtful in his description of the work and their services. On that interaction alone, we were immediately impressed with his (and Julie's) excellent customer service and personable manner. We had a few more quotes, but knew we wanted to go with D.S. Patterson. The work was done over 3 days and we are thrilled with the outcome! The quality of work wasexcellent and I can scarcely believe there was every such a gaping hole there previously. I should add that the hole was right over our staircase, so I am also amazed at Dave's ability to access the affected area, completely patch the hole, and smooth the entire surrounding area. We look like we have a new ceiling! I was also curious whether we would need to paint the ceiling afterwards (we did not request for painting to be done), but because our ceiling was already white we were fortunate that the plaster work Dave did was so smooth that it blends right in with the walls. Suffice it to say, we will be going to Dave and Julie for any and all plaster work in the future, and highly recommend them.

Excellent! Dave and I worked a schedule to move everything out of the rooms. He was very accommodating to me and my dogs. Dave is a perfectionist and his skill is very evident in the finished product. He is an all amazing craftsman.

We have actually used this business twice. In the summer, the toilet in our half-bath on the main floor flooded. Due to the water damage, the lower drywall and the baseboards in the half-bath and part of the ceiling in the basement needed to be repaired. The second time, the pipes under our kitchen sink started leaking into the basement. We needed to repair the ceiling and the baseboards. D.S. Patterson did outstanding jobs both times. First, upon contact, they were very friendly and helpful. The initial visits to determine the repair requirements were scheduled within a few days followed by scheduling of the repair work shortly thereafter. Upon completion, we were extremely happy for the work was definitely high-quality. You could not tell where the damage originally occurred for the new repair and paint perfectly matched the walls and ceilings. I would definitely recommend their business. Thank you, D.S. Patterson

LOVE THEM. We were in a situation where we had a severely sagging ceiling that needed to get replaced quickly so that we could get our condo on the market (so that we could buy our dream house). The first drywall company we found didn't show up and we were left frantically searching Angies List for replacements who could come out and give us estimates asap. We called D.S. Patterson mid-morning on a Friday and they sent John out to do the estimate Friday afternoon. Whereas other contractors didn't believe us when we told them we suspected our very long ceiling was only glued up, John had replaced many in our condo development previously and knew exactly what needed to be done. We told him that we thought we could take the ceiling down ourselves and he agreed we probably could and that it would save us some money to do it ourselves. Their estimate was reasonable and they were able to start the job that Monday! John and his helper showed up on time, did a BEAUTIFUL job, and cleaned up after themselves. While he was mudding he even fixed a not so great mudding job we had done ourselves on a strip of our kitchen ceiling and some bad wall spackling jobs. I recommend him all the time now. He has done drywall in this area for so long that he knows quite a lot about the history of different neighborhoods, etc. We had him come out and give us an estimate on some work at our new house and he remembered when they were built and could tell us why the ceilings are a bit lower than normal (since these houses were sold as "energy efficient" during the oil shortage in the 70s). John is resource! We look forward to doing business with D.S. Patterson again.

The service was outstanding. Pat arrived for the estimate and the job exactly on time. A great price, and a great job. It was a quick but tricky repair involving drywall and a corner drywall piece that I had massacred in order to fix a leak in the kitchen.

It went great! Dave showed up on-time on the dates scheduled and worked diligently to get the job completed. His plasterer/drywall skills/technique is more like a "work of art" . My husband and I were amazed at how meticulous he was about his trade. Because my husband is a master perfectionist, it is no easy feat to please him. We could not have been happier with his work. Oh, and he cleans up when he is finished, too

Over the last three months we had the pleasure of working with Dave from D.S. Patterson on two projects within our home. The first project was a finish plaster job for the main room in our basement and the second project was finish plaster for the remaining 2 guest rooms and the stairway to the basement. Both projects were completed in 4 day increments for a total of 8 days of work. In my past life I was a licensed home contractor in Richmond VA, and have since evolved into a boring office worker. I am pretty handy around the home and do most of the work myself ranging from finish carpentry and full remodels. One job that I do not have a skill for is finish plaster and boy was I happy when I met Dave for the estimate. After our first meeting and job site review I knew I did not have to look at any other contractors. The estimate and references were good for me and having a professional with experience with mid century homes was a perfect. Dave showed up on time, took on the project and completed on time with a perfect finish. The job site was clean every day the walls were covered with a level plaster finish and all patches are blended perfectly. After painting you can not tell the walls were ever touched. During the days that Dave was on the job I would come home from work and ask my wife if Dave sanded today, because the walls were so smooth. Truth is no sanding was done until the last day of the job with no mess. We are starting a new project soon and I have contacted Dave to see if he is available for the finish plaster work, I have already been contacted for an estimate and if all works out we will go with Dave on this job as well. Finish plaster is an art form and if you ever need a true artist contact D.S. Patterson for a professional finish.

I had read the glowing reports about D.S. Patterson in Angie's List, and decided not to get estimates from anyone else. David's estimate ($1075) seemed reasonable for 4 days work. I could not have been more pleased. He completed the job on time, within budget and the product was flawless. Did the whole job by himself. He and his wife Julie, who runs the office, were extremely pleasant to deal with. I would enthusiastically recommend him to anyone for plastering and drywall because he's good and fun to be with.

They were super responsive and attentive. He did a very good job.
