+ -1 moreAutumn Electric did an excellent job tracking down and resolving several mysterious problems in my electrical circuits that I was unable to resolve myself. I usually do my own electrical work, so I am fairly knowledgeable. However, because I am a woman, many contractors treat me with condescension. Autumn Electric's technicians impressed me positively because did not do this. Instead, they involved me in every step of their problem solving efforts, explained what they were doing, and went out of their way to teach me. I felt as if they treated me as a peer and respected my ideas and insights. In addition to solving several problems, I had the techs install a couple of light fixtures, a new circuit for a sump pump, new GFI outlets, and replacement outdoor receptacle housings and they did this work efficiently and accurately. This company is the best!
Description of Work: Resolved several circuit and light fixture mysteries, upgraded receptacles to GFI, ran a new circuit for a sump pump, and installed light fixtures.

The technician showed up at the appointed time and was very professional. In addition to replacing a blown dimmer switch, he straightened up the switch box in the wall. He completed both jobs within an hour. This was not a difficult job, but I would be willing to call the company again if I have a more complicated electrical problem.
Description of Work: The technician replaced two dimmer switches, one in the bedroom and the other in the dining room.

Description of Work: My mother's house needed a lot of electrical updating. We got several itemized quotes from different companies. Rick from Autumn Electric took a great deal of time walking through the house, explaining our options, and discussing how he would do the work. His quote came back within 24 hours. We had everything quoted individually so my parents could decide which items they wanted to move forward with. Rick's quotes were within five dollars of each of the other quotes from the other companies, but we thought there was a significant advantage to working with Autumn.First, Rick's interpersonal skills were helpful. He had to deal with my mom, my dad and me: that's three customers instead of one. He handled it all very well. Second, the other contractors made a point of explaining that there would be drywall damage from pulling wires. When I checked with Rick, he said there might be some damage but they would work to mininize it. My experience with other electricians is that they often do what is easy. Cutting holes in drywall is easier than snaking wires. Rick's work created NO drywall damage at all. He and his team worked very cleanly with drop clothes every place. Third, Autumn electric gave us the option of using Rick and a helper for the job. It required scheduling the job a bit further out, but my mom liked knowing who was coming to the house. Regarding the actual work they did: It was great. They installed three overhead canister lights in the family room, repaired the kitchen lights, including replacing the switch, replaced a bathroom fan, replaced a hardwired smoke detector, installed two new closet lights, installed a new overhead light for a room, rewired several switches for better usefulness, installed several new wall outlets, fixed an outside outlet and replaced six outside lamps with dusk to dawn light sensor lamps. They also fixed bathroom shower light. We've been so pleased with the work I am having Autumn electric do some work for me and my parents have decided to do some additional items on their electrical list that they hadn't chosen to do the first time around.

Chris installed the light and he was punctual, courteous, efficient, and very knowledgeable. The original light which was being replaced had been bolted directly onto the wood that frames the garage door. We had recently covered the wood with aluminum, and Chris neatly installed a proper outlet box on which to attach the new light. The whole job took about an hour and the new light looks great. I would definitely use Autumn Electric again and can recommend them without hesitation.

The technician came in and wore booties to protect our floor. He had all of the necessary parts and equipment with him. He made the repair, cleaned up well, and was very polite. Even though the work was more expensive then I expected. I was very pleased and I will use their services again.
Description of Work: They came for a malfunctioning specialty light in the kitchen. They repaired the transformer that went over the ceiling.

+ -1 moreRick from Autumn was able to come out the same day that I called and install two new exterior electrical boxes for mounting lighting, upgraded a single gang box to a dual, installed a dimmer, and an installed an exterior outlet. To my surprise this was all done without opening any drywall due partially in part to the location of the work being done, but mostly due to Rick's experience. The installation was done very cleanly (nice tight cuts in siding, evenly placed and level), as was the labor (drop sheets where used, and all scraps dust were swept up). I would definitely recommend Autumn, and infact have already reached out to them for an estimate on some additional work.

+ -1 moreThe technician was friendly, on time and he explained everything that he was doing throughout the process. He brought a tall ladder with him on his first trip into the house, which was nice, so that he didn't have to spend time going back out to get it. He went through every item on our list and explained which light switches worked with which lights. (We have a somewhat confusing set of lights throughout the house). He also explained what Virginia code requires, which helped explain why some of the lights were controlled by multiple switches. He worked quickly and diligently and he finished much faster than I was expecting, which was great because obviously our bill was lower than I anticipated. I also learned a lot about our electrical, which is an added bonus. I will definitely hire this company in the future.

+ 1 moreBased on strong Angie's list recommendations plus, coincidentally, the good report of a neighbor who had also used Autumn, I called for help. We had gone through a major renovation on our home starting in Feb. 2011. Unfortunately, in November, my contractor filed for bankruptcy leaving some work unfinished, including part of the electrical. I called Autumn and spoke with Daryl in the office. He gently warned me that the owner normally did not like to take over someone else's work but he would give me a call about coming out to take a look. This happened a few days later. Dave Barsotti (owner) was pleasantly surprised that things were in really very good shape here so he agreed to finish the work. Within a week or so, Greg and Pat spent two days taking care of a variety of electrical issues. Unfortunately, my new ceiling fan couldn't be repaired and this necessitated getting another receiver from the manufacturer. Greg came out again after I received the part and installed it without charge. A few days later when I had the electrical inspection by Fairfax County, the inspector couldn't find evidence of a pre-concealment inspection so he would give only a partial pass on our house. When Dave Barsotti heard about it, he immediately went onto the county's website and found the "pass" on the pre-concealment inspection (remember, something the inspector couldn't find on his own website!), emailed the inspector, who then quickly changed our status to "pass." I was extremely happy with Autumn Electric and will forever be grateful for their superb service after a very stressful renovation process. Additionally, everyone I spoke or had contact with from Autumn was just so nice and pleasant. This was a great experience!

+ -1 moreBought a new house which had a few minor electrical issues identified by the home inspector, but not addressed by the sellers. Had Dave from Autumn out to get a proposal initially for fault checking our circuits and doing some basic repair, and to see how much it would cost to run ethernet. Turns out we had cat5e wiring to the phone jacks, so it wasn't as crazy as I thought, and initially contracted for a set of work: upgrade our circuit breaker panel switches from 'generic' to Square D, install arc fault protection on the circuits where appropriate, put ethernet runs to 12 jacks in the house & wire them into a patch panel, install junction box extensions in outlets that didn't have them, and overall electrical system health checks. There were so many problems they identified with poor quality wiring - which immediately tripped the arc fault switches - that they spent a ton of time diagnosing, but spent as much time as they needed doing the job right and finishing it at the proposed price. I then had them out a second time to run a set of ethernet, optical, HDMI, and coax cabling between three locations in a room, including across the room, and installing banana plugs for speaker jacks, as well as tracing out speaker wires embedded throughout the house (approx 12 panels and countless actual wires). The wiring run was done extremely well, and the tracing took longer than they anticipated but they finished the job. They even accomodated my accusing them of cutting our security system wiring. Spent a lot of time telling me what they were doing too, as I wanted to learn. Price listed above includes all work they did under both proposals. Overall I am extremely happy with them - it may seem like they are a little pricey, but they will do the job and it's quality work, and if they make mistakes they will correct them quickly.

I had their electrician come in immediately after having a new a roof replaced, in which the roofers (Shiner Roofing - great job and company) removed an old attic fan and mounted a new one. The roofers would not wire the fan (which was expected), so I enlisted Autumn to take care of it for me. Everything went off smoothly - I was the first call of the morning and the electrician was prompt and courteous. He put down drop cloths, even though all of the work was contained within the attic, which I thought was great. After inspecting the job, he suggested that I consider bringing the attic space up to code by adding a light, an on/off switch for the fan and an outlet - it wouldn't cost too much more and would help if any future work had to be done in the crawl space. I agreed and he got right to work. After perhaps an hour, everything was completed and I was quite happy with it. The price was reasonable to me, the work was quite good and I can't argue with the professionalism of the electrician. I will certainly be using Autumn Electric again in the future for any electrical needs.

+ 1 moreThey gave me a price which is a set price to install a ceiling fan. We set up a date and they were here for about an hour and it was great They even put the fan together, it was in a box. It was a pretty reasonable price for what they did. They had to cut through the dry wall and did a great job, they made sure it was centered in the room. It was a very straight forward job, came and did it, vacuumed and the ceiling wasn't marked at all. There were two guys that came out and did it so it was very quick.

+ -1 moreTwo days after Christmas, a circuit breaker popped and I was unable to return the breaker to its original position and restore the electricity in part of my home. A nearby house had recently sustained a large fire due to a faulty circuit breaker box, and I was concerned about the same possibility in my 50-year-old house. I found Autumn Electric on Angie's List to be the closest electrical company to my home, and I called them around 1 p.m. The gentleman answering their phone was extremely polite and efficient. He indicated that an electrician was in my area, and within a half hour that same afternoon, the electrician Pat arrived. He was absolutely delightful, understood my concerns, and immediately checked everything out. He replaced the circuit, checked the circuit box to make sure all was in good shape, put my mind at ease that nothing else needed to be replaced, and went through several rooms giving good advice on electrical connections. I would highly recommend this fine company for pleasant customer service and efficient job performance, and I will definitely call them again with any future electrical needs.

+ -1 moreI had a sump pump installed and installer told me after it was installed that I should have an electrician install a switch for it, he had attached it to extension cord to other side of room. I got an estimate from a licensed electrician and it was very high, said due to county code a dedicated circuit needed to be installed and all kinds of legal gibberish (entire page) so I decided to call another electrical company and selected Autuimn electric who we worked with years ago when they first started, I was glad to read the good review on Angies List. I spoke on the phone to Daryl who was extremely helpful and conpetent, asking me questions about the circuit box, etc., he gave me a price over the phone and was able to schedule an electrician to come the day following. Chris was the electrician, he arrived early and got to work immediately, was very helpful in explaining to me what he was doing, he was extremely professional and competent and did an excellent job, installing the dedicated GFCI circuit and attaching to the wall. I will hire them again for future electrical work.

At the time, there was no ceiling present in the family room, so things went a bit easier than they otherwise would have, but there were some tricky parts to modifying existing wiring elsewhere. Only small glitches arose, none of which was really the responsibility of Autumn Electric. In Alexandria, electrical inspections are two-step procedure with separate rough-in and final inspections. I just mention this for the benefit of others that might come across the issue, but with the family room ceiling removed, there is a city fire code requirement to add a wired-in smoke detector before the final inspection with the new ceiling in place. This was not a part of the Autumn Electric work order, but for a very reasonable hourly cost they wired in a smoke detector I supplied. The other glitch was entirely my fault -- in the same room, I replaced paneling that had water damage but in doing so, used paneling that was not quite as thick as originally anticipated when the new outlets were roughed-in. This meant that the outlets would extend slightly beyond the new paneling. Phil, the master electrician, refused to leave outlets that did not fit exactly right and made adjustments once he saw how the new paneling would fit. Overall I was very happy with the work.

+ 1 moreBoth times they were prompt, courteous, professional and knowledgable. They came within an hour the day our carbon monoxide detector kept going off. (It wasn't the smoke detectors.) I will definitely continue to use them.
Description of Work: Once i had them switch some light fixtures and fix some recessed lighting problems. The second time they came when we had what we thought were malfunctioning smoke detectors going off incessantly - they concluded it was the carbon monoxide detector, but we had them replace all of our smoke detectors as they were old and needed to be all the same brand.

+ 0 moreThis was work we wanted done in advance of very, very substantial attic insulation so it had to be a last-time-ever for wiring within the attic. It's not clear whether the pricing was anything more than average for this area, but we got our money's worth. Two separate crews, two separate days. They were punctual, professional, and thorough. How they were to accomplish the cabling was up to them, and they clearly know what they're doing. The cabling being replaced apparently was installed by a prior owner two (or more?) decades ago. Ugly. Amateurish. Visible throughout the house. One especially challenging location was in a basement level. Previously the cabling had extended along the baseboard running the length of the room (again, it was ugly). Autumn Electric ran the cabling from the furnace room, through the ceiling, then down a wall, concealed by wood paneling. Not easy, but very nicely done! Another company had provided an estimate for the cabling part of the work, a company (Perfect Ins, Omar Fikrine) highly recommended within Angie's List but strangely reluctant to tell us how they intended to do the work. Just a price, no details. Just "the wire will be run from back the house." Very uninformative.
Description of Work: Autumn Electric installed 2 replacement and 1 new install of bathroom fans (we furnished the fans), installed a ceiling fan (again, fan furnished by us), and -- most challenging -- replaced the TV & Internet cabling, with outlets in 5 locations on 3 levels.

Description of Work: I blew a fuse in my fuse box and as a result half of my main floor had no power. I need someone to either come and replace the fuse or possibly split that single fuse into two fuses since it covered several rooms on my main floor. I contacted Autumn Electric and was able to make an appointment within the next few days. I also got a quote over the phone.
