Scott was prompt in returning my phone call and the next day provided a free estimate of cutting down the tree. He was courteous and very knowledge. The estimate, based on his time, was $300. Scott is an arborist and does not always have haulers on hand to remove the brush readily, so he recommended it would be cheaper for me to have him cut the tree up in manageable pieces and hire someone else to haul away (which it definitely was; I found someone easily on Craigslist). The job ended up taking him and his partner less time than anticipated so we were changed $50 less than quoted. I trust Scott's skills and knowledge and we are going to have him out a lot more to help with trimming and beatifying other a variety of trees and bushes in our yard. He loves trees and is scientific in approach to his care, bringing out the best in individual species. Other estimates to remove the tree were $500+, one all the way to $1100. The total project cost me $250 for Scott to cut down and $125 to have third party haul away: $375. Scott is amazing.
Description of Work: We hired Scott Johnston to cut down a blighted 45 ft pine in our yard.

Response was immediate and service the next day. Professional work done with humor and consummate skill. Kept me informed at every stage. Price was excellent and based on actual time spent doing the job. Would recommend Mr. Johnston to anyone needing tree work with no hesitation.
Description of Work: On the Friday before Hurricane Sandy hit, I noticed a vertical split in a 70' tall, 18"diameter red oak about 30 feet from my house. I contacted Mr Johnston that day and he told me he'd be at the house on Saturday after finishing some work for Habitat. He and his partner, Suzie, arrived around 2:00. He assessed the, situation and recommended that he first top the tree, notch it to fall away from the house, and--for good measure--attach a line and with a come-along, éncourage'the tree to fall away from the house.. He estimated that the job would take 2 hours. Mr. Johnston proceded to climb the tree and top it-- most astonishing thing since Cirque de Soleil. As planned, he then dropped the tree clear of the house, sparing, in the process, azaleas, hollies, surrounding trees, etc. Utterly professional, an artist. Price came in as estimated, quality beyond my best hopes, and right in time to safeguard my house from a day of steady 50 mph winds. We live in a forest

Overall I was completely satisfied with the work and will use this service again in the future.
Description of Work: Scott did a great job removing a tree that was damaged in the hurricane. He was very professional and completed the job for $50.00 less than the quote. I appreciated the quick response on completing the quote and also finishing the work. I will definitely call Scott for tree work in the future.

This was a very professional job. I called for an estimate on a Monday morning. and left a message. Scott returned my call later that afternoon, and arrived for an estimate within an hour. He was very thorough in his assessment, and said he'd be back the following morning or afternoon to do the work. I was out in the morning, and when I returned home about noon, more than half the job was already completed. He and his wife explained a lot of things about trees to me which I had never known before, so I also recieved quite a useful education from this experience as well. I am so thrilled that i finally have a tree service I can trust.
Description of Work: A large tree had been uprooted by Super Storm Sandy and was leaning into, and partially uprooting, two poplars. All were leaning toward my neighbor's driveway. There was another large tree that also had me worried. I called a total of five tree services for estimates, amd only two responded. One quoted $4200 for the job, and Scott Johnston quoted me $150/hr for the work, which he said would take no more than three or four hours, tops. I chose Scott, and within 24 hours (!!!) he and his wonderful wife Susie, had the job done, along with thinning out a couple of other trees as well. And instead of felling the other large tree that was worrying me, Scott climbed that gargantuan oak and said it was healthy and well-rooted on stable ground -- and he suggested that, instead of killing a gorgeous and healthy specimen, we should simply thin out some of the upper limbs to let the wind blow through it, rather than against it. I liked his reasoning. Very eco-friendly. So, that's what we did. All this, for $500!! They were very obviously well-educated, knowledgeable, and informative, and they were very friendly. I've already recommended them to my neighbors and to another friend. I couldn't be more pleased!

Scott returned my voice message within a reasonable time - the same day or early the next day - and we agreed upon a time for him to visit and discuss the work I wanted done and to give me an estimate for it. He arrived right when he said he would and we talked about options to suit my needs. You know right away that Scott is and quot;a tree guyand quot;, he knew exactly what kind of trees I had and their specific peculiarities. You get the impression that Scott cares about trees and keeping them healthy. In my case, I have a small in-town lot with far too many of the wrong kind of trees so I needed to have some removed. I had a mulberry tree in my front yard and a corkscrew willow in the back that were real headaches. Although the ivy covered mulberry wasn't particularly healthy, it was a real problem in the spring (think dogs eating and playing in the fruits) and fall (since it overhung the gutters) so I wanted it gone. The willow was poorly sited in the back yard - next to the patio. The corkscrew willow is a very unique tree that would be great out in a field somewhere but next to a patio? Not so much. That tree is dropping stuff ALL. YEAR. LONG. All winter - curly twigs and branches. All spring - flowers. All summer - flower remnants and leaves. All autumn - leaves. All of this on my patio (where the dogs track it into the house by the way). Anyway, working in my small lot was not an easy task but Scott and his crew handled it expertly and without significant damage. There were one or two broken capstones on a decorative wall from a large branch falling on them but frankly, it was far less than I was expecting. They removed all of the debris - chipping up the small stuff (which they offered to me to use as mulch if I wanted it) and hauling away the big stuff. I highly recommend Johnston Trees service and would not hesitate to use them again.

When I called Mr Johnson the day before, we were able to find a time that worked for us, the next day in the afternoon. He was helping out in the morning on a Habitat project, so he came promptly in the afternoon. He charges by the hour, but started immediately and first removed some lower branches that might damage the dogwood. He dropped the pine exactly where he wanted to and then cut the branches off of it and cut up the trunk in smaller sections that I could handle. All of this was done in less than an hour. I was so impressed with his skill that I asked him to drop 4 other trees, and to cut up the trunk of one that had been on the ground for some time. He completed all the work in less than an hour and a half. Mr. Johnson's service does not include disposal of downed trees, so if you want to save money and need a true professional, which is what I wanted, he's ideal. He's a true professional that I highly recommend.
Description of Work: I had a 40 foot pine tree that was beside a shed and was leaning towards my house. The week before, another pine beside it had snapped and knocked two other pines against the one that was leaning. I was able to drop the two trees that were leaning, but I feared that the one that had snapped and the other two had struck the larger pine and in the direction it was leaning, putting it at higher risk, even though it was a much larger tree. Because the leaning tree had the others growing beside it, there were no branches on that side of the 40 foot pine, so all of the branches were on the side that was leaning towards my house. Since one pine had snapped with strong wind a week before, I feared that the same would happen to this much bigger tree. There was a dogwood close to the leaning tree that I didn't want to lose.

Excellent price and service from a real professional. I was actually charged less than the original estimate (which was done over the phone according to my description). They were very careful not to damage any surrounding healthy trees. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: I had two trees that needed removal, one had been partially blown over in a windstorm and was leaning against our tool shed. It was very tangled with vines at the top.

I had a huge, dead weeping willow tree (40 feet high with trunk 4 feet wide) and another stump that was 3 feet wide and 4 feet high. I called and asked for an estimate on dropping the tree and cutting both stumps down to grade level, as well as cutting the stumps into smaller pieces that I could manage on my own with my 16-inch chainsaw. Scott Johnston took my call, was very polite, and gave me an estimate over the phone. He said if the work I was describing was accurate, then it wouldn't take him too long and that he charges $150 per hour and a one-hour minimum. He was by far the cheapest quote I got so I gave him the job. He came out promptly the next day and did everything perfectly. He worked for a full hour and a half without a break, and refused to accept more than $150 for his service. He also came across some unexpected obstructions in the stumps that dulled one of his blades so he had to replace it. I tried to pay him more to get his blade sharpened, but he wouldn't hear of it. I challenge anyone on Angie's List to find a tree service that will give you a quote over the phone (so long as your description of the work is accurate), come out and do the job to perfection, and stand by their quote -- a quote, by the way, that is less than HALF of what his closest competitors wanted. And by the way, I didn't tell him what others were charging as a way to try and get him to lower his price or anything. I just told him the job and he told me his price...$150 to cut down a massive tree and cut up two massive stumps. Johnston Tree Care is simply unbeatable. Scott Johnston has a customer for life here.
Description of Work: Cut down a massive, dead weeping willow tree (40 feet high with a 4-foot-wide trunk) and take the trunk down to grade level and cut it up into manageable pieces. Also cut another 4 foot tall and 3-foot-wide stump to grade level and cut it up into manageable pieces.
