I purchased a deal through Angie's List with Snell for an AC check up and refrigerant charge to a very old unit. The Company contacted me to set up an appointment. I asked if they could call my tenant since they are the ones living in the home. Snell had no problem with doing this and immediately called the tenants to set up an appointment that was convenient for them. This was for a rental property that I have in Woodbridge, VA. My tenants were pleased with the service, the professionalism and the knowledge that the tech demonstrated. Although they gave a quote for a new system to my tenant, I have not received it as of yet but will contact the company to discuss.

Hired Snell to perform a check-up on the AC unit and Gas furnace in response to a request of the people purchasing my townhouse. When making the appointment I specifically told the scheduler that both units needed inspecting, but technician was not made aware of this. Luckily he had the proper tools to perform both inspections and did so. It was not made clear that a separate inspection fee was going to be charged for each unit. Overall the inspection went very well. The technician even cleaned the AC unit filter, which I did not expect him to do. I did not expect to have any issues identified as both units have been working great for the last 3 years. I was told by the technician that the bearing in the blower motor were worn and the unit could go at any moment. He proceed to tell me that the repair would be about $800. I declined the repair. My husband looked up the cost of the part that needed replacing and it would less than $100. In addition, based on my husband experience with blower motors he did not agree with the technician opinion that the motor could go at any moment. Unfortunately, I think this was potentially a case of someone trying to take advantage of a person (woman) that is not knowledgeable of the equipment by striking fear that something catastrophic could happen during the hottest part of the year to try to make a few bucks. I honestly believe that if my husband had been there during the inspection instead of me that this may not have happened.

Asked for an estimate and eventually had them install a ductless split in an attic loft that was not getting sufficient air from existing ductwork. Estimate was good as compared to other companies and I know their work is quite good because we have a yearly service plan with them so we had them install. Installation was smooth and the two guys worked hard to finish in a day. Overall great experience and we continue to find snell has great value for the work provided.

The technician was very courteous , arrived on time and looked into the a/c. He explained me the detail in problem and went over what needs to be done and thoroughly finished it. Once the tune =up was done a/c was back to its normal performance. Thanks for your help.
Description of Work: The A/c wasn't upto its performance and they tuned up. When I called them and told them A/C is not working they agreed to come on the same day which was surprise for me.

The service turned out great. I've used them since then. I used them for a tune-up and they were great and so then when I needed another AC, I called them and they were super responsive, super quick, fast and very professional. They did the job within a week. It was great. Their work is awesome. They gave me a number of options. They were very professional about it. He acted like he truly cared. They came and did the tune-up and I was talking to the guy and he said he can set me up with someone else and they can come out and look at my whole system and tell me what to do, and they did. They recommended a couple of different options and we ended up getting a brand new additional unit.

Great! We returned late on a Satruday from a week's vacation to find the main central a/c unit not running, not even with the switch in the fan only position. On Sunday I called Snell and much to my surprise the phone was quickly answered. And even better, they had an technician available that afternoon. Just to be sure I had checked all that I could, the representative on the phone asked me a series of questions to make sure it was worth a weekend service call. (I already made all the checks, but the fact that they even asked was a great indicator of their focus on customer service.) James H showed up on time and had me describe the problem, asking much the same questions (which I took as a double check that the service call was needed before he got started.) James put booties over his shoes every time he came into the house to protect our floors, even though I told him he didn't need to do so. He set right to checking the settings on the thermostat, then to checking the control board on the air handler (the inside part of the AC system). He identified a blown fuse and explained that replacing the fuse might not fix the problem because fuses are in place to protect the rest of the circuitry from a larger problem. (I'm a former electronics tech, so this is something I know but it was good to hear him explain it , again as evidence of their focus on customer service.) Sure enough, with a new fuse in place, the low voltage transformer failed (smoke was a good indicator of the failure) when the power was applied. That indicated (to us both) that something else was wrong to have drawn enough current to weaken the transformer to the point of failure. James replaced the transformer.and went outside to check the contactor that the low voltage transformer supplies. And there he found the root cause. The contactor failed and stuck in the "on" position, drawing too much current which led to weakening the transformer and blowing the fuse. With a new contactor and the new transformer, the system worked as soon as power was applied. Success! James' professionalism and expertise were yet another excellent reflection of Snell and confirmed that the annual service contract with them is the right step for my 10-year old heating/air conditioning systems and gas hot water heater and fireplace.
Description of Work: Replaced failed control board low voltage transformer and failed contactor in air conditioner compressor.

I purchased a home in May 2012 and off the bat had gas problems. Washington Gas shut off the gas at the street. I had purchased a home warranty, so the warranty company suggested a company to locate the leak. I made an appointment, told them the gas was turned off - would they be able to detect a leak (Yes) the person came with no equipment, visually looked at the furnace and said he couldn't find anything. In the meantime I had also shut off the supply line to the furnace. After this tech left, a construction contractor located the source of the leak - at the meter which had been closeted and not visually available. Gas Company fixed that leak. During a recent (Oct 2012) 43 degree morning, I opened the gas valve on the furnace and turned the heat on at the thermostat. The furnace didn't light and I smelled gas. Thought maybe I hadn't shut a door properly or something similar. I knew the previous owners/tenants didn't maintain the property so I purchased an Angie's List coupon from Snell. The technician (Kevin) came a few days later (easy to schedule around my needs). He offered to let me watch what he was doing, but space was tight so I passed when he got to the guts of the furnace. He did the required checks and maintenance, was about to turn on the gas valve and decided to get his gas sniffer. There was a leak at the joint going into the furnace, he showed me the location and replaced the connection. I had a very old thermostat and had bought a new programmable replacement, but couldn't get through to Honeywell after several tries to ask about the wires. As Kevin was leaving I asked him if the 3 visible wires were sufficient for that thermostat. He said there should be more and found a blue wire in the wall that was not connected to the furnace - I'm glad I asked. He connected the wire, installed the thermostat. Kevin was very professional, friendly, and communicated every step of the way. Fixing the gas leak was the larger part of the cost; otherwise it would have been a pleasantly inexpensive visit. Bottom line, I feel better/safer not having to worry about the gas, the furnace is functioning nicely, I have stepped out of the dark ages and now have a programmable thermostat. I'm happy. It did cost more than I had anticipated, but I don't like to mess with gas.
Description of Work: Inspection, cleaning, found gas leak and replaced that joint, installed thermostat. Also visually looked at the antique freon A/C unit outside which I was hoping would succumb during the past summer. Note: I gave a B on cost only because I didn't anticipate a repair and it was the single most expensive cost - albeit necessary. I can't argue with it. I also purchased a "membership" with Snell for a discount on next year's service.

The technician was very professional and helpful. My tenants were very pleased with the service. Once we decided to replace the entire unit, the technician recharged the failing unit as a temporary fix for the tenant. This would keep them cool until the new unit could be installed. The service fee that I paid as part of the "angie's list deal" was applied to the overall replacement cost. In addition, since my tenant is active military, Snell offered the military discount.
Description of Work: The tenant in my condo called to say that the AC was not working well so I called to arrange a "tune up". Turns out the unit was leaking AC fluid and could be recharged but it wouldn't fix the problem. The technician recommended replacing the entire unit (heating and air) because it was over 13 years old, and could be replaced with a more efficient unit. Knowing that I didn't want to deal with constant break downs of an aging unit, I decided to replace the unit as recommended.

It did not go well. They did their prescribed AC tuneup. The representative failed to identify a problem with the AC unit. And just a mere 2 weeks later, my AC stopped working. I had to hire a different company to replace a part. The tune-up technician claimed there were checks made on the AC, but he obviously did not notice that a part was failing.

In the beginning, things seemed good with my relationship with Snell. I think the main part of that related to the technician that had come out to work on my HVAC. He was professional, nice, hard working, and honest. But beyond that, Snell as a company let me down. I initially had them out for an AC tune-up that they offered as a coupon on Angie's list. There was some condensation issues with my air ducts that they helped me with. So when I noticed that my heating element had stopped working when the late winter finally arrived, I didn't hesitate to call Snell. Thinking that I had found my default HVAC servicer. Ghi arrive and tried to fix it the best be could but concluded that the heating element was plan shot and there wasn't a work around. He laid out my two options: either replace the whole system because he wasn't sure he could find a replacement heating element b/c of the age of my system and this would be a permanent solution or I could let them search for a replacement part to install which would be a more temporary solution (around a year which worked best for me). He took copious notes of all the details of the part and took several pictures. I was relieved to get a call a couple of days later telling me that they had located the part and wanted to set up an appointment to instal. Ghi arrived with the part in hand, but when he started working, he quickly realized that the part they had ordered was wrong. After closer inspection of the box, he noticed that the order number was slightly different than what he had in his notes and given his office. He took more photos and notes again to give Snell's ordering department to get the correct part. He even called around to work out the details himself, but from the sound of it, he was rebuffed by a higher power. So, he said he would follow up with me when the part came in. I got another call saying the right part was in and set up another installation appointment. However, a day before the appointment I got a call from Ghi indicating that after inspecting the part to make sure it was correct he noticed that the part was damaged during delivery. I was grateful he had done so in order to not waste my time or his. They would try again. Meanwhile, my pregnant wife and I were freezing our butts off. Of course, the winter had been very mild up to this point. Another part comes in and it appeared to be the right one but realized it wasn't. So, Ghi thought it would help if he came and unhooked my heating element to show to his office to make sure they could order the right part. The only problem was that without the heating element my whole system would not work, meaning my AC. Thinking it would only be a week and the temperature was not showing signs of rising any time soon, I agreed. And of course, the weather warmed up considerably. It was fine at the start because the house was cool and would have been ok for a few days. After another ordering attempt, things got delayed and then we started sweating our butts off. I called in to get to the bottom of it, and the supervisor, , said was sorry and would keep trying to get the right part and that Ghi would come out to reinstall my broken heating element so that I could at least run the AC. So he did. Then of course, the weather turned cold again, but still had to freeze our butts off, again, while waiting for the part. I told them that I had reached my limit and wanted them to know that I was contacting another HVAC guy, and whoever got the part first would get my money. After which, I hadn't heard anything for a few days and so I called. I hadn't been able to stay on their case b/c I was busy with my wife in the hospital working through some pregnancy issues. So, I called only to learn from the receptionist that the part was in and that we should set up a time to instal. At first, I was confused and thought she was referring to a previous attempt and that no one had told me it had come in. In my last call, the supervisor had assured me that he would call me as soon as it had come in b/c he knew I was frustrated. Ghi came to install but found that it was still slightly different than the original part. Thankfully, Ghi after some hard work was able to make it work. So finally after more than 3 months of frustration, I got my heating element in. Just in time for truly spring temps. As I've said, Ghi was very cordial, professional, and sympathetic throughout the whole process. None of this was his fault. Frankly, it was hard to know exactly where to place the blame, Snell's ordering department or Trane's parts department, who manufactured the part. Regardless, Snell and the supervisor could have done more. Yes, they did take about $100 off the bill, but I never got the feeling that Snell was that concerned about the situation and weren't going out of their way to address it - other than Ghi. Snell's office just didn't have the attention to detail nor the drive to get it done. I will not use them again. I stopped at giving them an "F" because the job was finished eventually and b/c of Ghi's hard work. I feel it is just another "take a number" kind of organization, and I won't take the chance of freezing, sweating, a d freezing my butt off to give them another chance.

It went great, after having service preformed on the old unit in June we determined that the 20 year old system needed to be replaced. The technician took the information from the old system and had a quote prepared for me within a few days. The quote came in much less than expected. The technicians arrived promptly today and replaced the entire system quickly and professionally.

It went pretty well except the unit malfunctioned shortly after the technician left our home. Reason being is a capacitor burned out which the technician was at fault due to it getting wet as he cleaned the unit prior. The technician came back later and replaced the capacitor free-of-charge. Other than that, everything else was good.

When I woke up Sunday morning, I realized that my house was not as cool as it should have been. After a short investigation, I realized that the outside unit of my air conditioner was not turning on. Of course, it was early July in the Washington, DC area and the weather was only getting hotter. Not having any idea on who to call for an HVAC repair, I logged in to Angie's List. Snell was the highest rated and I had heard some of their ads on the radio, I gave them a call. The phone was quickly answered and I was given the first available appointment. Unfortunately, the first available appointment was on Tuesday. Lucky for us we have more than one AC unit in the house. On Tuesday, we received a call stating that the technician was on the way. A short time later the Tech arrived. Soon we were informed of the problem and given an estimate of the cost. The next thing I know, the technician informs me that the repair is complete, he explains exactly what he found and what he repaired. All of my questions are answered without hesitation. The Tech picked up where he worked and left the area cleaner than he found it. I am very pleased with the service provided by Snell, I now know who to call next time.

Vince was the service provider. He was on time, very professional and pleasant to deal with. He did a thorough inspection of our system, cleaned what needed to be and added some refrigerant that was needed. He was very informative as well and pointed out things three other companies had not. I signed a year inspection/maintenance contract based on his visit. As a contractor myself, I would recommend them highly.

Snell's technician responded quickly and professionally, and provided an estimate that was detailed and clear. David Snell subsequently provided me with reasonable quotes on several A/C systems with different SEER ratings. Though I ultimately bought a heavily-discounted system from another company for purely financial reasons, I would highly recommend Snell Heating & Air Conditioning for any A/C or heating repairs or installs, as they have all the appearances of a five-star company.

I thought it went well until I spent a night upstairs after the AC was allegedly fixed. The technician seemed very personable and knowledgable so I signed up for their "club plan". I should probably not have spent the money until I'd spent at least one night with the "repaired" AC. The thermostat is all the way down to 50 degrees and the temp is still registering almost 80 degrees. I hate to think what this might be doing to my electric bill :-( I have contacted the company to ask them to come out and reassess. I'll update this review depending on how that goes.
