Did not get the work done from them, it was to expensive

The representative gave us an estimate of $3400 to replace a 75 gallon water heater which is around $1400 more than the lowest of the 4 estimates I received. It was obvious that the goal was to get me to agree to estimate on the spot. When I made it clear that I would get other estimates, I was told that he was able to get the estimate down to 2900 and that he could try to match lower estimates. I received estimates of 2,000 and 2100 and I went with one of those.

Beware of this company. They are a complete rip-off hidden behind excellent Angie's List reviews. To be fair, they might perform excellent work - I can't say because I didn't end up giving them the job. But you will pay somewhere between 50-100% more than other reputable companies whose work is of the same quality. Here's our experience: The variable blower motor failed on our furnace. Based on Angie's List we called John Nugent & Sons to take a look at the problem. Their office was friendly and able to send a tech the next day -- not bad in the middle of the Virginia summer. Since the HVAC display had the exact error code (41 - blower motor failed) the tech had no problem confirming the issue and quoted us the price for the repair: nearly $1,600!! Quite shocked since this was about 50-60% over my estimate, I asked for a breakdown between parts and labor to understand the quote. The tech said that John Nugent is a "Flat-rate" company, so he couldn't do that. I told him that I was not a flat-rate customer and he then referred me to his boss, Walter Lynn. Before I was able to get a hold of Mr. Lynn I researched the part using the serial and model number of our Carrier furnace. I was able to find the variable blower motor for as low as $500 from reputable parts dealers throughout the country. This further confirmed my concern since the labor for the repair of blower motor should never cost $1,000. Eventually I did speak to Mr. Lynn and he re-iterated that John Nugent was a flat-rate company and he was also not willing to break it down for me. I flat-out told him that I believed the flat-rate was a way to hide that they were either a) overcharging on labor or b) marking up the part by 100% or more. Mr. Lynn did neither confirm or deny, instead he used the example of an oil change that is also a flat-rate service. It's outrageous to me that he thinks that a $70-90 standard service that I can compare at a dozen shops in a couple of square miles compares to a specific quote for $1,600 that I even paid a $95 service fee for. Needless to say, I did not end up having John Nugent perform this work. Now, you may wonder how they get all these great reviews. Well, there are two reasons: For one, their work is likely really good and most customers simply do not understand how much any one HVAC job should cost and the $95 service fee makes sure that nobody gets a second quote. The second reason is more precarious. When I decided not to go with them I argued that they should have told me beforehand that they are a flat-rate company and that I wanted the fee refunded. Mr. Lynn agreed to sending me a check for the amount, in exchange for me not writing a negative review on AL. Now, before you think that I broke this deal by writing this review -- it's been a month and I haven't received the $95 refund. At this point I do not expect to ever get it and in fact I'd much rather write it off and tell all of Angie's list members what this company is all about. I'm sure Angie's List itself is also interested that John Nugent compensates customers to omit negative reviews here. As a final note, I ultimately got the part for $500 and had a very reputable company install it for $300. Half of what John Nugent wanted for the exact same job!

Went well but the price was astronomically high. Quite a lot of money for just a little bit of work.

We've been using Nugent & Sons since buying our house 9 years ago and having them install a new HVAC system and tankless water heater. Since then, we've had them install a new water pressure tank and never thought twice about calling on them to do other plumbing, electrical, or HVAC services/repairs/installs. We recommended them, felt good about the company, and gave them a pass for things like the HVAC, tankless water heater, and later on the water pressure tank installs not being as seamless as it could have been. That is until this past week (17JUL19), where I seriously question what's going on with the company. I've written to them on 17JUL19 without an acknowledgement about what I feel was an inadequate Spring a/c checkup and subsequent run capacitor failure during this past week of high humidity and temperatures. Things happen at the most unexpected times, sure, but having had the company check our a/c system out 2.5 months ago and having not ran the a/c for a month out of that time, then having a run capacitor fail, does not give me confidence that the company did a proper or thorough checkup. The capacitor was clearly deformed and leaking oil, which is something I would have expected a visual inspection would have noticed was problematic or starting to be. Anyway, I wrote Nugent & Sons, but have not received any response. I said I did not want anything from them in terms of remediation, etc., but a company who is in the service industry ought to at least acknowledge your issue/concern, especially if you've been a customer with them for nearly a decade. Anyway, I guess I'll be searching for a new go to company. Disappointed. 22JUL19 the service manager called...that didn't go very well. A bunch of excuses immediately off the bat, and evidence he did not actually read what I had written. Last, you never, ever hang up on a customer you called, unless you really never want their business again.

This is not the same as revue from 5/26. New furnace. and a/c installed. Travis, Memo and Jose arrived at 7:00am. Installation went very well. They were done at 2:30. A/C works great -I have it set at 74 and it's cold! They cleaned up and took old unit away. I would definitely recommend them. Angie's List - please don't delete this.

I was very happy with my experience. Mario showed up on time and was very helpful in answering my questions about the AC system in a home that we recently moved into. He performed a thorough inspection and offered advice about how the system's performance could be improved. The price was reasonable and exactly as quoted prior to the appointment. I would recommend this company and will use them again in the future.

They did an excellent job, are very reliable and very prompt. I would highly recommend them.

I had Nugent Plumbing replace a leaking exterior faucet. The plumber said that I had to have a backflow preventor installed as it was "code" due to the faucet's being connected to an existing in ground sprinkler system. The plumber said he was unable to hook up the new faucet to the irrigation system. When the irrigation company hooked up the irrigation system, the water flow was too low to support the irrigation system. The back flow preventor was replaced and when the irrigation company reconnected the irrigation system, the faucet still leaked. The plumber returned a third time and told me 1. I needed to have a different back flow preventor installed as the first two he installed were for garden faucets and I needed a "irrigation preventor" which would cost an additional $1500. The difference in the two types of preventors was never explained to me during the first two installations. Also, the plumber's refusal to connect the new faucet to the irrigation system to check for leaks, because he said he was unauthorized to do this, prevented the system to be checked for leaks. This has been an exceedingly frustrating experience with the end result that my new faucet still leaks and I am unable to use the irrigation system. I do not recommend using this plumbing company. I feel the plumbing company could have been more inventive in helping to solve the leaking problem.

I feel that I was taken advantage of with the price I paid ($1092). To be fair, this was the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and both repairs are functioning properly at this time. But the price was absurd. Leak detection was $225. That is fair. Repair of a 3in pvc pipe - $375. Repair of a 3/4” copper pipe - $492. The repairs upset me the most. The copper pipe was discovered with a pinhole leak and not contributing to the main leak. It was quite the convenient and lucrative find for them! So this pipe was completely exposed (drywall already ripped out) and he said it would be $492 to fix. I cannot find anyone that would charge that much even if they had to rip out the drywall and the material cost for this is minimal. A pvc pipe repair is also rather simple with basically negligible materials cost. The material and labor cost was never broken down because it would be embarrassing. Home Depot quotes a four foot piece of 3/4” copper at $12. The 3 inch pvc is quoted at $12 for 10 feet. Throw in some adhesives and I’d generously say materials were $50. He was there for about 3 hours so That puts the labor cost at $347 per hour. Absurd. To top it off, when speaking with the dispatch agent I was told that the Angie’s list coupon or military discount would “probably” be applied. They were not so don’t count on that. To be fair, they were responsive and on-time, but I will never use them again or recommend them due to the absurd price that they were to embarrassed to break down between labor/materials.

Outstanding work from start to finish, including the initial service call, where the tech (after a thorough look) advised us that it was time to say goodbye to our 21-year-old unit. He quoted a reasonable price AND arranged to "comp" the repairs needed to keep our old unit going until the new one was installed. The install team (Mike and Ronnie) arrive exactly when promised, and took their time to finish every detail (including the "little stuff" like a completely new drain line, adding a new pad and elevation legs for the outside unit, and moving it slightly further from the house for better access). Great explanations of all the above. Have also used for maintenance issues - started with them when they were able to dispatch on the day before a holiday, in July, without a service contract.

They are back ordered for new hvac units. Per Jason and the manager they will do temporary fixes if it goes out again until they are able to install a new unit. I now have cold air coming through the vents. I have been dealing with this company for about 10 years. They are very professional and are willing to work with you. I have recommended them to my friends, and will definitely call them again. I gave them a 50% deposit on a new unit. The service call today was $95 for a Sunday call.

Tech was excellent. Very professional, showed care for my property, gave me several options but did not try to influence me one way or the other. The work was done quickly. I’m looking forward to using them again for all my future plumbing needs.

I had called them to diagnose a knocking sound in the plumbing pipes. The repair technician arrived promptly on time, asked me a series of questions, and when the noise started happening was able to determine that it was the pressure regulator valve (PRV) gone bad. He had the needed parts with him and was bale to perform the replacement withing an hour. I love that the new PRV has a gauge that tells me what the inside water pressure is.

From the proposal to the finished product my bet is these guys are at the very top of companies providing this service.. I had read a review where a knowledgeable HVAC person explained that all of the products of major manufactures of HVAC systems were good. He went on to explain that the QUALITY of the installation was the most important element of how well the system would perform. Considering this I read through many reviews focusing on larger projects. I chose three companies to compare. I’ll start by stating that John Nugent came in with the best price. Not hugely different but lower. The gentleman who completed the estimate(Carl) was very through as well as professional and personable. He went an extra mile to determine what my needs were and explained the scope of the project in detail. After careful consideration I opted to go with John Nugent & Sons. As of now I’m am absolutely convinced that I made the right choice. The team assigned to my project..Ruben,Tom,Trevor, Edwin and one other gentleman whose name escapes me were over the top excellent. Super knowledgeable,professional,courteous, diligent and committed to completing every aspect of the installation flawlessly .I watched these guys work( work hard) and was totally blown away at the precision on display. In summary if at some point there is a failure In my HVAC system it won’t be because of a faulty installation. These guys know how to satisfy a customer in every aspect. USE THIS COMPANY...YOU WONT BE SORRY....

I have had this company several times in the past. Work always good but expensive. However, this time the cost was utterly preposterous. It never occurred to me to ask up front what such a minor job would cost. They were here a short time ago to replace another toilet flapper but as it was in the context of other work I can't say I paid much attention. The plumber was here 10 minutes. Flat rate charge was $278!!!!! I called the manager but he never returned my call. I have called several other Angie List plumbers and none come anywhere near this price.
