Description of Work: My AC was having a problem where it would not shut off between cooling cycles. I went to Angie's List and looked for a provider that could diagnose the problem, and, if reasonable, fix the problem as well, I ended up buying a diagnostic service call from John Nugent and Sons for $45. Their ratings from other customers seemed good. After the purchase, they promptly contacted me and we set up an appointment for the next day. | |To qualify my comments below, I do want to point out that there are home owners who (1) want a complete diagnosis and repair, some who (2) want a diagnosis and repair IF the price is reasonable and finally another type of homeowner who want (3) to know whats wrong and if it is within their capability, they will fix it themselves. I consider myself to be first a #3 and but will default to a #2 if the service is reasonable. Please consider my review in this context. | |Two technicians arrived (on time) and I walked them to the HVAC unit in the back of the house. One technician asked if I had been running the unit. I said periodically to keep the house cool. He said that was not good and I could cause the compressor to overheat by doing that. I again repeated it was only short periods. | |The junior technician removed the cover to the relays and electronics. The senior tech stated the relay assembly (also known as the contactor assembly) had been sticking and showed signs of the contacts being burn. I visually verified this to be the case as well. This made sense since the unit would run continuously unless the breaker for the unit was turned off. | |He felt the compressor and said it was seriously hot and needed to be cooled. I asked how that was done, and he said they cooled it for 45 minutes using water from a garden hose. I asked about the contactor assembly and he said he'd need to check if there was one on the truck and the cost. He said the compressor cooling would be $95. They went to the truck. While they were gone I felt the compressor. While it was warm, it was by no means hot. I decided at that point to forego the "cooling" service. | |He returned with a contactor assembly in a box. I asked how much to replace and install and he said $284. Along with the compressor cooling, the total charge would be $379. No charge for the diagnostic since I had already bought that from Angie's list for $45. So in a nutshell, the entire service charge would be $424, $45 of which I had paid already. | |So this is where the home owner types mentioned above would take different paths. Get the unit fixed for $379? Forego the compressor cooling and pay $284 to buy the contactor assembly and have it installed? Or thank the technicians for the diagnosis and buy the contactor assembly myself and install it? I opted for the latter. (I looked up the assembly on the internet and it was available for $35 plus $10 shipping.) | |If the markup on the contactor assembly had been even close to reasonable (vs 650%) I would have preferred for them to install it for me. But the markup for the assembly along with $95 to cool a "warm" compressor using my water was just too much. I recognize that service providers have overhead and costs, but come on... | |After saying goodbye to the technicians, I went inside and ordered the part. It arrived a couple of days later and I installed the contactor assembly (after ensuring to discharge the capacitors with a multimeter). I restarted the unit and it has been running continuously since September 10 with no problems. | |I again want to reiterate that home owners do fall into different types when it comes to home repairs and they should always consider their abilities (and safty) when deciding how to approach a repair. A note to service providers - do not assume home owners are ignorant and they most certainly do not want to be insulted with excessive markup on parts. I suggest that the technicians be trained to ask some "probing" questions and be given the latitude to adjust service quotes accordingly.

Description of Work: They replaced our complete system to include gas furnace, outdoor AC unit, filter rack, humidifier and water heater. Workers were prompt, polite and very efficient, completing the work in a single day. The only issue we had was with the new smart T stat which due to a manufacturer issue only communicates with select wifi routers, so Nugent had to return and provide a special stand alone router, which they did at no additional charge.

The tech forgot to leave the warranty information but swears he left it inside the unit, after many calls to get the information, I finally went on the website to sign up for the warranty. I really like Nugent and sons and will continue to use them. They are on the high end for cost. I have used them for drain clearing as well. On time, professional and very pleasant staff. |

Description of Work: Spring A/C inspection

Description of Work: They examined my A/C, added freeon and gave me options of either having the coil checked to discover the problem but stated it would be better to either replace just the A/C unit or to upgrade to full A/C, furnace & coil. The tech was very professional and answered all my questions.

Description of Work: I had an issue with one of the main sewer vents in my home. I felt it was not venting above the roof line. Miguel came and inspected the vent and discovered that it had disconnected within the wall. He put the pipes back together. I probably could have done that myself but I was not sure how bad the problem would be. I was glad to get resolution to the problem and that it was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Description of Work: John Nugent & Sons installed our current heater and air conditioner in November 2012, and we have continued with a yearly service agreement. The last check was in April 2014. Their work is very professional, clean and complete.
