Description of Work: Dan was very professional and did really good work that was beyond what was expected. There was a delay for a bit due to some personal business of his that I was not aware of but once we got through that he was great. I will be calling him again. Is gave him more than the bill because he deserved it.

Description of Work: Mr. DeWitt has done everything from bathroom and closet remodeling, drywall repair, light fixture replacement, installing ventilation fans, additional gutter downspouts, etc. to replacing ugly carpeted stairs with hardwood.

Description of Work: Home Services-VA (Mr. Don Dewitt) installed our new fridge, dishwasher, microwave and gas range. We had scheduled with Don to install our new appliances but we did not know what time of day they would be delivered. They ended up be delivered at 7:30 am and when we called Don and he came straight over. Both the range and the dishwasher required additional pieces that we did not have and Don went to Home Depot and picked up both pieces. Additionally, our new microwave needed a new bracket hung, which was an unexpected addition to his work, but Don replaced it without blinking. Everything is running great and we didn't have to worry about a thing!

Description of Work: Our second story deck was pulling apart at a corner where the hand railings meet. The weight of the leaning rail began to affect the structural integrity of the deck floor, pulling it apart to the point where we could not use it. Mr. DeWitt explained the reason for the problem and the solution. He ended up removing the entire rail, setting it aside and then reinforcing the rail position to make it stronger and sturdier. We ended up spending very little money in supplies. Also, Mr. DeWitt suggested reinforcing the deck flooring with screws because the nails were popping up. This was something that my husband did on his own and we were appreciative of the suggestion and that he didn't pressure us for Home Services-VA to do the job. It is nice to come across people who understand customers that have to be cost conscious.

Description of Work: A/C for outside dog house, install a zip line. I live in a hot, humid climate and own a dog with thick fur. I had no one to watch the dog during the day and I couldn't leave the dog outside in the elements without worrying. I contacted Home Services - VA to ask if it was possible to pipe A/C to a newly constructed dog house. As an added measure, I wanted to add a zip line for the dog to give access to the entire length of the yard. Without hesitation, Home Services - VA would find a way. Shortly after my inquiry, Home Services - VA provided a recommendation. Together we traveled to a home improvement store and purchased the needed materials to pipe A/C from the house to the dog house and add a 100 foot zip line. Items purchased: dryer vent (down spout) with screws, 12' insulated duct work (9 inch dia.), 8' sheet of insulation, 8' sheet of thin plywood, anchors, zip line and duct tape. The dog house was built with two windows. The window in the rear of the house was removed and the dryer down spout was attached (the down spout was attached to a small piece of plywood to cover the hole left by the window). The 12' insulated duct work was attached to an a/c vent in my laundry room by an aluminum corner vent. Duct tape was attached to ensure no leakage. The insulated duct work was fed through an outside vent that provides ventilation to the house's crawlspace. The piping was attached to the dryer vent with duct tape. The dog house was insulated and the insulation covered by thin plywood cut snug (roof and sides). The door was not fashioned with any type of cover. With the insulation and plywood, the dog house remains cool. Anchors were attached to the corner of the garage and an out building at the end of the yard. The zip line was attached to the anchors and a pull line was attached to the zip line (for the dog).

Description of Work: The back yard is fenced with two gates that lead into the front yard. The fencing is constructed with wood posts and planks. Fences were coming apart, hardware needed replacing. Contacted Home Services - VA and asked to determine the best way to either replace the gates, upgrade the gate hardware, or replace the fence altogether. It was determined replacing was necessary when we learned two of the posts checked were rotten and broken at ground level. Home Service - VA and I traveled to two home improvement stores to determine where I'd get the best price for material to replace the current fencing. Based on price, I replaced the fence with plastic fencing. Material required: six, six ft fence posts, 12, 12 ft 4"x4" plastic post covers, 14, 8' plastic fence segments, gate hardware for two gates, three bags of screws for plastic fencing and plastic post caps. All posts that were rotted at the ground were replaced, all plastic fence posts were cut and placed over the wooden fence posts. Fence segments were cut to fit between fence posts, all screwed together and fence posts caps added. The plastic gates were constructed out of fence segments and gate hardware added.

Description of Work: My house was built in 1988 and until June 2011, was still using the same A/C unit. Home Services - VA had been to my home on numerous occasion to conduct a home install or repair and was familiar with my A/C unit. It was terribly hot and imperative to get a quick solution to this problem. Home Services - VA called around to find the best price for an A/C unit and we scheduled a time that Home Services - VA could schedule the installation. Home Services - VA picked up the A/C unit, traveled from out of town to my home and removed the old system and installed the new within a couple of hours. Home Services - VA even took the old unit to the local recycling center to dispose of it (after capping off the old unit to ensure state compliance).

Description of Work: Removed a 20 year old natural gas water heater and replaced it with an efficient natural gas tankless water heater. The work was performed in an afternoon.

Description of Work: An octagon window at the top of the stairs (to the second floor bedrooms) had water damage that had begun on the outside of the house (improper material) and seeped through to the inside of the window framing. Home Services - VA took the frames apart (exterior and interior) and fashioned two new frames (exterior and interior) ensuring to use treated wood for the outside frame. The outside frame was replaced and painted. The interior frame was sanded and stained (inside frame) and affixed to the window. The interior window frame had to dry before polyurethane could be applied, but the interior frame is an identical match to the window frame at the entry door.

Description of Work: Shortly after purchasing my home, I noticed one of the knoll posts at the foot of the stairs leading up the front steps was pealing. Upon further inspection, it was discovered both knoll posts were infested with termites and needed to be replaced. Once both knoll posts were removed, the area was sprayed to kill any termite larvae . The wood knoll posts were replaced with a solid 4'x4' material that wouldn't be affected by termites (cemented at the base), then surrounded with a plastic casing. Plastic caps were added and affixed to the plastic casings with adhesive. The hand railing was attached to the plastic knoll posts with metal brackets/screws.

Description of Work: Hallway and stairway carpeting was replaced by wood flooring and the stairs with a carpet runner. As a general home improvement project, I solicited the assistance of Home Services - VA. My goal was to replace builders carpeting (off color and marked with pet stains from the previous owners). I Considered complete carpet replacement, but once I spoke to Home Services - VA, I was excited about the wood flooring options available in the local home improvement stores. Together Home Services - VA and I priced both the carpet runner and wood flooring and purchased all the materials needed to replace the current flooring. Home Services - VA had all equipment needed to cut, nail and sand all the flooring and completed all work over the course of a few days. The stairway took a bit longer to complete because once the project began, it was discovered the builders had taken short cuts to save money. Home Services - VA provided several options to correct the problems. It took a couple of weeks to get the materials together, but the project was soon completed to my satsifaction.

Description of Work: Bay window repair (bay window had been built with material intended for indoors, so within a few years of construction completion, the bay window began to show wood rot). The paint was pealing, the surface felt spongy and Home Services - VA recommended the entire casing had to be replaced. Home Services - VA explained what materials would been needed to bring the structure into compliance with state regulation. Together we selected the required material needed to repair the bay window casing. It was sealed and painted, all work completed in a day. To improve the look of the small flower bed under the bay window, all plants were removed and pavers added to raise the flower bed up a foot off the ground. Once the flower bed was refilled with dirt, a small sprinkler system (with timer) was attached to the outside hose bib so it would come on automatically and water the plants growing in the flower bed. The flower bed only took a few hours to complete.

Description of Work: Installation of a gas fireplace, insulting the chimney, building the fire place and mantel and creating a beautiful ceramic hearth. I contacted Home Services - VA to investigate whether it would be possible to install a gas fire place in a sealed chimney (pre-existing in the house at purchase). The townhome had three levels, the chimney ran from the family room on the bottom floor to the second floor living room. Together we reviewed the available gas fire place models at the home improvement store. I purchased all the material needed to build the mantel and construct the hearth and apply the ceramic detail. The project began when Home Services - VA tapped into the gas line that led to the water heater (from outside) into the family room and ran a special line to the chimney (second floor). Home Services - VA constructed framing to house the gas unit, including the mantle and hearth. The gas line installation took a day. The frame work, gas fire place install and insulation placement took another day. The ceramic tile hearth began on the third day. The fourth day the fire place and mantle were sanded and stained. Once dried polyurethane was added. Ceramic tiles were protected with a sealant a few days later. The entire project took five days.

Description of Work: My home was built in 1988, two story, double car garage. After over 20 years and four owners, the garage doors were discolored, worn, windows cracked and unsightly. I contact Home Services - VA to get recommendations on repairing or replacing both doors. Home Services - VA and I went to the home improvement store and evaluated the different styles and brands. We conducted an internet search to find the style that fit my garage and traveled together to a near by town and found the doors needed for the replacement. We collected all the supplies needed at the home improvement store. The project began by removing the two doors (four sections each). The replacement doors were easily installed because we didn't remove the old guides since they were sturdy and servicable. However, after the doors were installed, it was discovered the "openers" were in need of replacement. Due to Home Services - VA connections, replacements were available (great price too). After the doors and openers were replaced, Home Services - VA removed cleaned the area and took the old doors to the local recycling center.
