Working with Jason (Denny) and Norm (Gardner) has been wonderful! They are attentive to our needs, good listeners, responsive to inquiries, and flexible. They both have expertise in working with all kinds of homes and style types; their extensive experience allowed them to guide us in a very helpful and supportive way with regard to designs, plans, materials, etc. The different projects they completed for us were done in a timely, professional way, and the cost was reasonable. We have been very happy with their services and are looking forward to continuing our relationship with them.
Description of Work: We have worked with Denny & Gardner for a number of projects (both inside and outside our home), and we are in the process of working with them to do a big remodel of our kitchen/living area. We have used them to re-do the siding and paint the outside of our home and for multiple plumbing projects. We also are now working with them to develop plans for opening up our first floor which will include a new kitchen, expanded living area, and a much more open floor plan.

I had previously hired a contractor, that was suggested by an acquaintance, to install a custom shower. I did not check this company out, which turned out to be a big mistake. I ended up with a leak that I determined was not in the plumbing but in the tile work itself. I received four quotes to fix this and of the four Denny & Gardner had the best price and the most complete scope. Unfortunately, the only real "fix" was to totally remove the existing tile and wallboard back down to the studs and start over again. Denny & Gardner suggested this was the only way to be sure that all of the leaks could be found and fixed and I agreed. I did not want to go though this process a third time More to the point, my experience with Denny & Gardner - They were very professional and took care to protect the walkway to the bathroom and keep the area clean - The individual, Marcin, who did the work was very nice and did excellent work - They basically just tore out what was there and put it back, but it looks so much better than it did to begin with: - Marcin took the time to lay out the tiles so there were no little "rips" of tiles (we had these "rips" from the previous installation) - The tiles that Marcin installed were flush where the previous installation were not. - It may not seem like much, but it's these little details that make all the difference and I guess you really don't know until you see the quality (or lack there of) from one contractor to another

Norm and Jason were great throughout the entire process. Norm Gardner was very open and upfront about a realistic budget and timeline to complete the job. Jason Denny came to the house and after listening to my wants & needs got it! He even had many great suggestions that I would have never imagined possible, many of which I incorporated into the remodel. All phases of work were completed on time and on budget. The different crews were very efficient and the quality of their work was very high. They were also very professional and courteous (not always the case with some sub contractors). I would definitely use Denny & Gardner again. I am extremely pleased. Our family now enjoys countless hours hanging out in our new beautiful basement.
Description of Work: Basement Remodel of approximately 650 square feet. Completely gutted and rebuilt 1 bedroom with full bath plus great room/ rec room. Job included: framing of all walls, plumbing (including a full bath, moving the shower drain, etc.), electrical & lighting (recessed), insulation, drywall, doors (2 pocket, 2 - 32", 2 - closet double doors, flooring (carpet for the bedroom, 18" travertine tile), built-ins(cubbies, tall bookshelves, entertainment center), Base boards and Paint.

We obtained four full quotes and three full designs before deciding on Denny and Gardner. They were not the cheapest or most expensive but they really understood our needs for the kitchen remodel. They were the only people whom we talked to who suggested flipping the entrance of the pantry in our kitchen and knew exactly how to do it. Once I showed Brandon my Pinterest account, he knew exactly what kind of style we were going for. He went out to his car, and literally pulled out the door that we wanted. I think that sealed the deal for us. They worked with Debijo, an interior designer who made the whole process brainless for us. Once we selected a cabinet style, she took us shopping for countertops. It took us 30 minutes to make a decision. She then came to our house and showed us about ten different selections of tile and backsplash that would go with our style and it took us 30 minutes to make a decision. She gave us advice on cabinet hardware, faucet choices, lighting, paint and even our bar stools. I think that made the whole decision making process so much easier for us. Leroy, our project manager, was very communicative and kept me up to date. Neil, the other worker in our house was really great, very meticulous and helped me to make some choices on how wide to make the window pass through and widening our entrance. They started a week late because of some personal reasons and finished after 4 full weeks of work and one more week of touch up work. The only snag that we hit was having to replace the entire subfloor because the original was falling apart in some places. They ended up actually pulling out some drywall out behind our backsplash because their tile guy Marcin didn't like the way that the drywall was a bit wonky. It turned out that our walls were not very straight, but they pulled out everything and redid that drywall so that the tile would lay beautifully flat. Their tile guy was wonderful and very careful. Everyone cleaned up after themselves after each day. We did have some dust in the house, but it was ok. We are very glad that we asked Denny and Gardner to do the kitchen, and we will certainly call them again when we decide to do our bathrooms.
Description of Work: Denny and Gardner did a full kitchen remodel for us. We kept the original footprint of the kitchen and breakfast area, but pulled all the cabinets and walls down to studs, replaced the tile floor, repainted, replaced the stove (not included in the price) and added recess and under cabinet lighting.

(deleted member name), We strive to get back to all of our requests in a timely manner. Unfortunately, we have no record of your call. We did get your "request a quote" 2 days ago on June 18th. I don't feel that it is fair to put a negative review a day later after not being contacted. We strive to respond to new requests within 48 hours of receiving the contact information. Again, sorry we could not fit within your time frame but if you want us to come out and give you and estimate we would be happy to.

When it looked like we might be moving overseas on short notice, I called Denny & Gardner. The company owner and a designer came out and spent a couple of hours measuring my kitchen and discussing what I wanted. Within a week or so, I received a preliminary kitchen design which was helpful. Although our move was cancelled, my interactions with Denny & Gardner lived up to my high expectations. They came out promptly, provided a very competitive estimate, and I was confident that they could do the work right, on budget and on schedule. When I told them that our move had been indefinitely delayed because of the sequester, they were not pushy or upset. I wouldn't hesitate to call them again if we ultimately move.

My designer, Charles Almonte, referred Denny and Gardner to me. Jason, one of the owners, came out to give me an estimate of the job. The estimate was fair and after seeing their rave reviews on Angie's list, I decided to go with them to do my house remodel. They started work in early February and have just finished (mid-April). I am beyond pleased with how everything has turned out. The workmanship is top notch. What makes this company special is the frequent communication from the project manager to the client. Leroy, the PM, gave me frequent email updates detailing the work that had been done, any problems they had noted and the plans for the coming week. They were never off schedule. Never left to do another job. No hidden fees -- estimate was accurate. If I ever noticed something not to my liking, a quick email to Leroy solved the problem. Also, they left my house cleaner than when they started! they cleaned up their tools and supplies every evening so it was almost like no one was working. They had total respect for my home. Denny and Gardner is the best contractor I've ever used (and we have a lot of experience remodeling in current and previous homes). The whole team are consummate professionals. You will be thrilled with them. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend!
Description of Work: Basement remodel -- enlarge an existing bedroom (dry wall, new ceiling, new electric and flooring) and place a large window fire exit. Finish an area to create a home gym (drywall, lighting, flooring, new door). Remodel a bathroom converting it from a half bath to full (all new tiling, fixtures, plumbing). Remodel of laundry room, wet bar and powder room -- install new floors, new door, dry wall work and painting, new cabinetry and plumbing, new lighitng. Replace and install new crown molding in family room. replace doorknobs in basement and main level of home.

The first work they did, from the time I contacted them to the end of the task, was handled professionally and the work was done to a very high standard with the work area left spotless at the end of the job (to the extent that they swept the drywall dust from the parking lot). The second job was much more extensive and required a specialized knowledge of materials to achieve the intended result, which was to reduce the sound coming into a basement apartment from the upstairs. They achieved this by replacing the existing drywall with sound deadening drywall, among other techniques. The work was done on schedule, successfully and significantly reduced noise coming from the upper floor, and again, they left the place as clean as it was before they started the work. I've used a lot of contractors once and have my list of things to be done for which I need a contractor. Based on my experience twice with Danny and Gardner I'll be calling them to do the work.
Description of Work: I've used Danny and Gardner on two occasions. The first was to repair ceiling and wall drywall that had been water damaged. The second time was to install sound deadening material in the ceiling of a basement apartment.

I highly recommend this company, and will have them do many more projects for me in the future. We were facing a real deadline with Christmas imminent, and Denny & Gardner made sure that it sent extra painters to get the job done. The work was excellent. In addition to painting, the company also did a great job of caulking many several leaking showers and bathtubs, and repairing water-damaged drywall and baseboard carpentry.

Denny and Gardner recently completed a major renovation of our two bathrooms, including a large master bath. The work covered the gamut--demolition, plumbing, electrical, tile, drywall, finish carpentry, and painting. The D&G owners and crew exceeded our expectations throughout the process. The guys showed up when promised, were professional, showed terrific attention to detail, and cleaned up after every day's work. We couldn't be happier with the finished results. These guys are craftsmen and we definitely plan to call on them again for future projects.

Norm and his team were very responsive and understanding to what we needed. They all did an exceptional job of keeping us informed and checking in with us throughout the project. Norm visited routinely and kept in touch with us. The site lead Jason kept the crew very busy and focused on the daily tasks. Jason checked in and checked out each and every day giving us a status of all of the goings on. Jason was always available to answer questions when one would arise. The crew took time to clean up daily and ensure we knew their schedule. The communication was amazing compared to what we had experienced on the original master bath remodel. The bottom line is that Norm and the team assigned to our project were able to complete not one bathroom but three in half the time it took the previous contractor to complete one. We are very pleased with our final result and all of the work performed We would recommend Denny & Gardner to anyone and we appreciate the fine job and attention given to our home and project. Next remodel is our basement and we will be contacting Norm when we are ready for it. Great job guys and thanks for giving us confidence that their are still good contractors out there.
Description of Work: Fix and replace recently upgrade master bathroom, remodel 1st floor powder room, and the 2nd floor hall bathroom - a total of three bathrooms plus installing new exterior door in the sun room. Unfortunately our master bathroom had been remodeled by another contractor less than two years before but had major defects and left a very bad impression with us. My wife wouldn't even use the remodeled bathroom and had moved into the hall bath. We shared our experience with each prospective contractor and selected Denny & Gardner. They were not the least expensive but projected honesty, commitment and a thorough understanding for the scope of the job. All three bathrooms were completely gutted except for the whirlpool bath in the master bath. Master Bath- installed new shower, replacing all shower, bath, and floor tile, replace/repair plumbing and electrical, installed two new vanities, sinks, lighting, exhaust fans, and all fixtures. Hall Bath - Replaced tub, wall and floor tile, reused existing vanity and toilet. Installed new plumbing fixtures and lighting and exhaust fans. Powder Room - Installed new tile, pedestal sink, and toilet, new fixtures and lighting. Replaced sun room door with a larger door.

We are very happy with the work done and appreciate the recommendations given by Brandon. He listened to what we were wanting and brought back many granite samples so that we could find the look we wished to achieve. We looked at four additional companies and thought that D&G was the most professional and personable, along with having competitive prices.
Description of Work: We had new granite counter tops installed in the bathrooms and the kitchen. The sinks and faucets were replaced. We also had some drywall work done due to water damage. The service crew showed up on time and completed the work in one day. The final bill was within the given estimate.

Our experience with Denny and Gardner, their staff, and their partners was outstanding from start to finish. When we contacted D&G in spring of 2012, we'd yet to decide whether to fully remodel our late-80s kitchen or to simply make some updates. D&G responded immediately and quickly set up an appointment. Norm was a pleasure to meet with, no sales pressure whatsoever, and answered all our questions about how the remodeling process worked. We agreed to set up an appointment with one of their partner designers. In the middle of the planning process, we ran into some issues that necessitated putting the project off by about a month. D&G were patient yet responsive during that time. We were even more impressed as construction began. The project began right at the scheduled start date and within a day the crew had removed almost all vestiges of our old kitchen. Each day when we returned from work, we could see how much progress had been made, yet all traces of mess were cleaned up. We never had to worry about dust, construction debris or any other issues, which was great because we have pets and two young children. During the project, Norm and his crew - particularly project manager Leroy Rhoades - were very accessible. They came to us promptly with questions and responded promptly when we had questions of our own. The project was completed on time and Norm worked with us to find the payment plan that was easiest for everyone. Overall, we could not have been happier with Denny & Gardner and would absolutely recommend them to anyone planning a home remodel.
Description of Work: Denny & Gardner took out our late-80s kitchen down to the studs and completely remodeled it, including: - New tile floors - Custom cabinetry - Knocking a pantry and broom closet together to create a niche for the fridge and custom cabinets - Granite countertops - Installation of all new appliances - Wiring and adding additional ceiling lights - Painting - Addition of new ceiling lights in the adjoining den

BOTTOM LINE: We had a fantastic experience with Denny and Gardner. We worked primarily with Norm, but honestly, everyone we worked with was professional, honest, and friendly. We feel like we paid a small premium over the "low-bid" to get quality workmanship Denny and Gardner will stand behind. We'll definitely go to them first in the future for remodeling work. As an example, I knew we had picked the right team when we were at a somewhat-critical juncture, and we were exchanging emails, and it was just after 11 pm. The fact that they (Norm and a couple members of the team) were working on MY project at 11 pm demonstrated they were dedicated to my project and our personal satisfaction. We originally got multiple quotes for the bathrooms, and talked to the vendors about the kitchen. Denny and Gardner had been recommended to me by a friend that did some great work for him, which Angie's List corroborated. Their quote was competitive, and our experience through the estimate process had been great, but another vendor had provided a more competitive quote. I contacted the Denny and Gardner (D&G) project manager (Norm), and told him we'd found another vendor, but that I hoped we'd be able to work together in the future - potentially the kitchen. The more we worked toward the contract with the second vendor, the more it became clear that maybe we weren't going to end up with the product we wanted. The quotes were "close enough," and my experience with Norm had been so positive, that we re-contacted D&G, and entered into a contract negotiation with Norm. This was in August. The work started just after Labor Day. Things moved reasonably smoothly and quickly throughout the process, even while we went away on vacation. Norm was easy to deal with, and his crews clearly took pride in their work. The house was left broom clean at the end of the day. Cardboard and/or plastic was put down to minimize tracking dirt on the floor. Plastic sheeting was put up to keep all the drywall/demolition dust from getting all over the house. Tools were kept in the work areas or in the carport overnight (where I told them they could keep things). They were pleasant and respectful, and I didn't deal with any one from D&G OR the subs that I didn't like personally. My biggest complaint would be that the frameless shower door took a long time to get installed, and when it was, it was the wrong size and had to be re-cut. But, for the most part, it was all transparent to us. We had a shower curtain once the shower was ready, and the installers didn't have to be asked to replace the shower door. They came to install, and it was apparent it was the wrong size, and they took it back without being asked. It simply added 3 weeks to the [end of the] project completion. Things went so smoothly, and Norm and his crews were easy enough to deal with, we just asked them on the spot for a quote on the kitchen. We told them what we wanted to do. We told them how much we could spend. We asked them what they could do. The removal of the walls specifically was a tricky issue to deal with. Norm, wanting to make sure he could deliver what he promised, brought in several extra parties to determine the best way to address the wall removal. Ultimately, we were able to sign a contract for the kitchen we wanted for the price we could afford. The kitchen experience was different from the bathroom experience, but was equally gratifying. Norm works with a partner named Brandon on kitchens. Our project lead was a young man named Leroy. We were in constant communication, and they were great about making sure things kept moving along. There were a handful of hitches, for sure, like all projects, and we went over our budget a little, because we selected some moderately extravagant tile for the backsplash. The cabinet vendor shipped a couple doors that were the wrong color, which had to be replaced. The tile company had a couple hitches that caused us some headaches. Nothing catastrophic, and all things that I would expect in a project of this size. Overall, our experience was excellent. Based on our experiences, I don't see myself getting multiple quotes for future projects. Norm's honesty and remarkably-genuine personality have led me to conclude that I can work through him to get the high-quality product I want, within the budget that I think is reasonable.
Description of Work: We needed a handful of services performed - two complete bathroom remodels, and a total kitchen overhaul. The house is old (1950s), and the walls are all plaster. The plumbing was all cast iron. Our initial intent was to split the work into two projects - bathrooms and kitchen - and have the bathrooms done in 2012 and maybe the kitchen in early 2013. The bathrooms were pretty straight-forward, except we wanted a couple bathroom fans installed and vented, a heated floor in one bathroom, and frameless shower doors. Otherwise, it was demolition, followed by tile, paint, vanities, contertops (granite), toilets, and accessories. See below on "how it went," but ultimately, things went so smoothly with the bathrooms, that we simply decided to move right into the kitchen with this contractor, without getting other quotes. The kitchen was a total overhaul. All the appliances were moved from their original locations. We converted from electric to gas for the stove. We removed two walls to open up the kitchen. New cabinets, granite countertops, tile backsplash, multi-color paint. New lighting, both under-cabinet and recessed ceiling lighting was all installed. New hardwood floors were installed to match/mate the adjacent rooms' hardwood floors. It did not include new appliances - we purchased them separately, but Denny and Gardner installed them for us, as part of the renovation.

Due to positive reviews on Angie's list I called Denny and Gardner to provide an estimate for a kitchen remodel that included refinishing the hardwood floors that were damaged due a leaking refrigerator. Norm was very responsive and helpful during our initial telephone conversation and the next day he promptly showed up for a visual inspection of the proposed work. He said he would get back to me in about a week with an estimate. However, after 3 weeks I did not hear from Norm so I initiated contact with him to inquire about the estimate. He stated that he was out of town and was unable to work on a proposal. He apologized and a few days later I received a proposal from his partner, Jason. The price was much higher than anticipated, but I really liked Norm and Jason's professionalism so I emailed Jason and Norm asking if we could scale back the work to fit our budget. About 2 weeks later I received an email from Norm stating that Jason was out of town and would get back to me later. After a month goes by and still no word from Jason or Norm, I decided to go with another contracting company for my kitchen remodel. If this company returned emails and followed up as expected, I probably would have used them. Unfortunately, this type of unreliability was a deal breaker for me.
Description of Work: Provided an estimate for a kitchen remodel and hardwood floor resurfacing.

Response from Denny & Gardner
Customer, I am sorry to hear you were unhappy with our company. However, you forgot to mention that we came to your house 3 times to discuss the project. Also, I helped you settle your insurance claim and walked you through those steps so that the claim could get settled in a favorable way. I did not get compensated for that time nor did I ask to be. As far as your kitchen, we discussed your budget early on. Your budget for the total amount of work that you wanted was just not reasonable. Both Jason and I told you that your budget was unrealistic and we even gave you an estimate reflecting the total amount of work. I also informed you that I was going out of town for a week and in the meantime to talk with Jason. What you discussed with Jason was just a reduction in price or how to cut costs. I understand your frustration but we can not do a project for less than what we feel it will cost.
