+ -1 moreI noticed a leak in our kitchen ceiling from our upstairs bath. We didn't have a regular plumber as much of our plumbing work had been provided by our contractor's plumbing during various home renovations. I found Bowman's on Angie's list and called them. They arranged to have a service tech come out within a couple of hours. He was very professional and polite. I was very impressed with Bowman's making time for us, as we were a new customer. When we have any future plumbing issues, we won't hesitate to call Bowman's for service.
Description of Work: The tech looked around the tub/shower for sources of the leak. He noticed several cracks in tiles that appeared to be settlement cracks and caulked those cracks. He also saw that the shower valve was not flush with the tiles and indicated that water could get through the gap between the valve and the tiles. He noticed that a prior workman had not screwed the valve correctly into place causing the gap.. He took off the valve, found a replacement screw, replaced the shower handle valve and caulked the area where the valve meets the tiles. As we have no access panel for the shower, the tech wanted to try these measures and see if they would solve the leak, before doing major work that would involve cutting through tile and drywall. He said to contact him immediately if water continues to leak into the kitchen ceiling; and them we may have no choice to but be more "invasive" in the approach. The cost for his services was very reasonable, especially given that Bowman's fit me in, a new customer, on an urgent basis on a Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend.

Bowman's was fast to respond to our needs, and scheduled the work within our available window of time. The service rep was punctual, down to business, and very conscientious with his estimate and his work. Company communication was excellent, and we will certainly use Bowman's again!

water heater repair
+ -1 moreSaturday morning, waiting for Hurricane Irene. No hot water. Checked thehot water heater and it was leaking. Called several plumbing services including Bowman's. They responded very promptly to our message. We wanted a particular brand water heater because of it's high rating. We spoke with Dana Bowman and she clarified exactly what we needed (size, type, brand,model) and was able to get it at their supplier's even though it was a Saturday. She also told us what the entire cost would be from the outset. She told us the installer would be here by 3:00 and he was right on time. Jackie was extremely professional. He helped protect our carpeting so it wouldn't be stained with rusty water from the old heater when they removed it. He (and his assistant) were thorough, careful and neat. They cleaned up completely when done. We really thought getting a new hot water heater on a Saturday would be extremely difficult, but with the added element of a pending Hurricane we thought it wouldn't happen at all. Kudos to Bowman's Plumbing, it was great service.
Description of Work: Bowman's Plumbing in Sterling, Va. not only responded to our emergency phone call for a hot water heater, but were able to come out on the same day and install it at a fair price- particularly for Saturday service.

Description of Work: I had the water heater replaced and two clogs in the plumbing. They knew exactly where to go to work to clear the clogs and the water heater replacement was done quickly and efficiently.

+ -1 moreI called Saturday evening when I discovered a leak just inside the wall from the pressure relief valve. Apparently it had been leaking for some time, while we were on vacation but hadn't noticed until there was some damage. At any rate, Jackie called back promptly, told me how to stop the leak by turning off the main supply and draining the pipes. This morning, he arrived a few minutes after he called and within an hour and a half the repair was done and we had our water service restored, In order to replace the valve, he had to cut into the wall to get access to the main supply (our basement had been remodeled). but he did this neatly leaving an easy to repair opening. I was very pleased to get prompt service over night on a weekend so as to minimize disruption to our routine. I always prefer to use local contractors and would definitely choose them again.
Description of Work: Replaced a leaking pressure relief valve which was located inside a basement wall (after a previous remodel). This required cutting a hole in the wall and splicing the new valve into the house main water supply line.

+ 0 moreGood experience with Bowman's. Initially made the appointment with Dana and she scheduled me for a couple days later. They showed up on time and looked at all my problems. I was discouraged when they left that there was nothing that could be done about any of the problems I had. I paid a $80 trip fee. I called Dana a couple of weeks later and asked if someone else could come out and take a second look just to make sure nothing could be done about any of the issues. She promptly scheduled a different guy to come out a couple of days later and take a second look. He called when he was on his way but before he arrived he had an emergency call he had to take care of. This wasn't a problem because A) He didn't take long and B) I had scheduled my appointment early enough in the morning to where the delay wasn't a big deal. He came in and did a much more thorough explanation of all my problems but the same conclusion as the first guy. This made me feel a lot better about having paid the $80 even though nothing could be done. They offered me a lot of information on how my house was built and the condition of everything as it stands. It was really great that Dana was willing to send out another guy without charging me more money. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Description of Work: I had a few problems that I wanted them to check out... Most of our toilets are original to the house (1993) and don't flush very well. They inspected those toilets and let me know that there appeared to be no problems with the venting and we should look at getting the toilets replaced if we're not happy with the performance. They did try their auger in one of the toilets with no success - it didn't appear to be blocked at all. The drain in our kitchen sink makes a "glugging" sound after running water down it or when the dishwasher is used. They inspected this and let me know that this is due to the way the pipes were setup when the house was built. It has a closed venting system which does not allow enough air in for the pipes to breathe and that's why the noise occurs. Nothing could be done without having to overhaul the entire system. The last problem was that our pipes bang when the upstairs toilets are flushed and the upstairs sinks are used. They checked the water pressure to make sure it was set correctly and let me know that it appears the pipes have loosened themselves from the braces inside the wall and that's where the noise comes from. Without ripping the drywall open, no way to fix it. Lastly, the plumber checked out my water heater for me and let me know that it is also original to the house and well beyond its expected lifespan so we should look at getting it replaced before anything drastic happens. I will be taking his advice on this one and have already started looking into a replacement.

+ -1 moreThe service technician, Shaun, did a great job diagnosing the problem. The office fell down on the job. "Dean" was supposed to get back to me with a price and availability no later than 5PM that same day - he never called. The problem was diagnosed around 12:30 PM on the 20th and I never received a repair price until after 1PM the following day. The service technician who was probably swamped with service calls had to make the call. "Dean" never called. The girl answering the phones in the office was nice enough and she tried her best to help me, however everything hinged on "Dean" and he was never available. This was not a few dollar repair, it was going to be into the hundreds -- I needed to know what this was going to cost me. By the time the technician from Bowman's called me back with a price, I already had another company scheduled to take care of the repair and they ended up giving me a better price. By June 22 (which was my choice -- the other company would have come to my home the day I called them) my HVAC unit was up-and-running. I will be using the other company from this point forward.
Description of Work: This was my first experience using Angie's List. I chose Bowman based on the information provided -- Bowman's was given an "A" Rating. My entire HVAC system completely shut down during one of the hottest weeks of the season. Bowman's determined the circuit board was bad and needed to be replaced.

+ -1 moreI called to get an estimate, describing what we needed over the phone and in email. They scheduled the estimator to come by about a week later at a convenient time. He arrived, took a look at what we wanted done and declined to provide an estimate. Our job was a retrofit of a new sink in a different area of the home where there is not water, and Bowman did not want to do that type of work, did not want to cut drywall or route new water or vent lines, they only wanted to work on plumbing. This is not necessarily a problem and does not imply their plumbing skills are anything other than extraordinary, but one other company called me back after an inquiry and covered this fact with me on the phone rather than going to the trouble of sending someone out who declined to help. This is the reason I gave them the lower professionalism score, although, again, this applies to their estimating work, not their plumbing work. I might try Bowman if I have a plumbing repair, but would caution others that they do not do plumbing installation work in existing houses.
Description of Work: Needed an estimate to put in a new sink for a wet bar in a new location in our existing townhouse.

+ -1 moreI like them. I liked the guy that came and I like the fact that they do a little bit different than the other plumbers in the area. They have a book that has a flat fee for every possible kind of thing. So they charge you to come out and look at whatever you want done and I think its $60 or $70. If you decide that you don’t want the work to be done, you still have to pay them that $60 or $70 to come out and look. If you want the work done, the prices are probably just a little bit high because they follow the flat fee procedure. So they don’t have a clue if they are going to run into any issues or not, but at least you know upfront the maximum amount that you are going to pay. This is regardless of whether he takes eight hours or two hours. That’s kind of cool. Other companies in the area might probably end up charging you less money but I like this flat fee kind of thing. I like the lady who is one of the Bowman’s who takes all the phone calls. She’s very knowledgeable and very good. I really liked the man who came. He was excellent. The Bowman’s couldn’t come the same day but I decided to try them. They already gave me the flat fee and so I knew what I was going to pay. I thought that was good and I liked them. I will use their services again in the future.

Description of Work: Repaired two toilets: one which would not fill up so it could flush; the other, where the water kept running after flushing. He troubleshooted a leak that I have under the kitchen sink; could find nothing but advised that maybe the sink was installed incorrectly. He then advised what brand to buy, if I decide to change the sink, and what his company would charge to have it installed. He also took a look at a problem in the upstairs bath and advised on how to proceed. Gave me his opinion on installing water line for refrigerator ice maker.

+ -1 moreMy kitchen sink and washing machine started to overflow. I needed someone right away. I called and spoke to Dana at Bowman's at 12:30 and Doug arrived at 1. He knew right away where to begin and quoted me a price. He snaked about 50' of coil down the pipe and got it unclogged. After thoroughly checking that we had no more overflow, he cleaned up and was gone before 2. Great service. I would call them again.

+ -1 moreMain Water supply valve inside the basement was leaking badly. Called Dana at Bowman and asked for a plumber the morning of the 27th and learned that the County Water supply had to be turned off by either the County or the Plumber in advance of repairs and they would have a plumber out the morning of the 29th. Since the county requires one request per day and the schedule for turn-offs is based on geography we asked that it be turned off on the 27th and used toilets on a tightly scheduled basis until Tom the Plumber from Bowman's arrived at 9:30 am on the 28th. He promptly and professionally diagnosed the repair and replaced the valve with on-site time limited to an hour at most. Perfectly satisfied with the repair and will recommend Bowman based on this successful experience.

THE MAN FROM BOWMAN'S CAME AND HAD THE WHOLE THING FIXED IN AN HOUR HE EVEN LOOSENED UP A VALVE THAT WAS STUCK SOLID AND DIDN'T CHARGE EXTRA. HE WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND EXPLAINED EVERYTHING HE WAS GOING TO DO, HE WAS VERY NEAT AND LEFT EVERYTHING AS HE FOUND IT MINUS THE LEAK. I THOUGHT THEIR PRICING WAS WITHIN REASON AND FAIR, ALL UP FRONT NO SURPRISES. I WOULD USE THEN AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT

Description of Work: I was having an issue with the T/P overflow valve on my water heater. On a Saturday, they were quick to respond. Tom was able quickly diagnose the problem and replace the part. He even provided instruction on how to drain the tank. I will certainly request Bowman for my plumbing and HVAC need.

Each time, the tradesmen arrived within the time estimated, and the repairs were accomplished quickly at or near the minimum price ($60 with Angie's coupon). I am thoroughly satisfied with their service, and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I am reporting on three separate visits for 3 different jobs on 3 dates (Feb 14, May 5, and May 18, 2011), so this should count for 3 inputs in Angie's data base. Each visit involved repairs on different toilets, two with flushing problems and one which leaked below the tank.

The lady on the phone was very informative and assured me that someone would be out the same day from 1pm-5pm. Sure enough at exactly 1pm Jackie called to say he was on his way. He was prompt and professional and clearly explained what the problem was along with the price. He was able to fix things up in a jiffy and while he was not able to fix the back faucet, through no fault of his own, he did come up with a manageable solution for us! Also, there were no problems accepting our online coupon. Thank you and we will definately be using Bowman again!
Description of Work: Assessed and replaced front leaky faucet and assessed the back leaky faucet, but was unable to replace it due to no crawl space and siding surrounding it. He was able to explain where the shut-off valve for the back faucet was.

The men responded promptly and even curtailed their time off to come install the new hot water heater. They were very professional but also gave sound advice about our flooding situation from the heater. We would use them for any plumbing needs.

+ -1 moreWe had problems of getting hot water into kitchen sink. I tried to fix it myself but I could not initially find the problem. So Bowman's Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning came out and they said that they would be charging me $80 for service call. They came out and we paid the $80 but the guy could not diagnose the problem. He then said that if I figure out what the problem is he was willing to come back and fix it. The problem we had is that the faucet unit, the one with the spray had failed internally. He did not find the answer to the problem. I did. I paid $ 80 for nothing. Now it is on a granite counter top. If I asked him to come and install it he would credit me the $80 to future work. But ultimately it was I who found the solution to the problem so I don’t get anything for my money. He did say that there is a charge on service call. He did not lie about the service performed. I paid him $80 just to come to the house. He was upfront about what was going to be charged but he could not find the problem. If I had said that the faucet busted and here is a new one put it on, it would have been done right. But he did not find the problem. I was the one who got under the sink, broke the pipe apart and found the problem. He really did not figure out what the problem is nor did he fix the problem. I would not use him in the future.

+ -1 moreCalled Bowman's based on other Angie's List reports and were extremely pleased. We had tried everything possible to unclog the blockage before calling them. We hadn't been able to use either of the 2 sinks without bailing water in a bucket and throwing it outside, or our dishwasher for 2 days (happened over a weekend). They explained their procedures, quoted an estimated price, etc., over the phone and scheduled an afternoon appointment. A short time later, they called back and said they'd had a cancellation and could schedule their visit much sooner. The technician (Doug) was terrific. Explained everything, performed the service needed, was very tidy, and also gave me tips about how to keep it from happening again. He was very informative, which I appreciated. Bowman's is now in my Rolodex.

+ -1 moreCalled to have the sewer line snaked for a home I am purchasing. This was recomended in a number of publications for homes older then 20 years. Setup an appointment with women who indicated that "her brothers and fathers" own the company. A technician calls me back a day later and informs me that their camera won't go through 1 inch pipes. Come to realize that the women I had spoken to had indicated that I wanted all of the pipes snaked, not just the sewer like I'd asked for. She gets back on the phone and proceeds to blame this me for this. She also chides me a number of times for not knowing what a "cleanout" was. Finally, she informs me that her camera line is only 100 feet and that she can't garuntee this will be long enough. I ended up going with John Nugent & Sons, who understood what I was asking for and did a great job with the inspection.
