Description of Work: They did a Landscape Design for our yard. We liked the design but implementing it was not affordable. We decided on another design that allowed us to fix a drainage problem while tackling the landscaping more piecemeal.

Description of Work: I paid $125 for 4 hours of landscape design planning. After a lengthy back and forth to schedule the appointment to come to my house for the consultation, it took a month to get the plan emailed to me. When it arrived, it was the complete opposite of what I had very explicity asked for. I wanted a plan for putting in plantings around a future pool, and I indicated that the pool was not a near-term plan, but I wanted to get started on planting shrubs and trees to give them time to grow and provide privacy for when the pool hopefully goes in. When the plan came to me, it seemed as if more thought and effort went into designing the actual pool, deck and patio. No descriptions were given of the plants that were shown, which were not that many. I had described a two-tier deck, but a single deck was shown. I wasn't expecting a deck design, but what was provided was not what was discussed. But most disappointing was that there was zero follow-up. I was too disappointed to get back in touch with them, but they never contacted me again.

Description of Work: The "professional" spen less than an hour at our home. That includes assessing both the front and the back. She really didn't seem to want our input and she definitely didn't want to teach us anything about proper trees, bushes, etc for Virginia's climate. Additionally, we had mentioned a specific vision for our backyard, which she ignored, and despite agreeing to incorporate some type of rock or other material to curb the pool of water in a small area of the yard, she didn't do this either. This type of request was the reason we hired a landscape design firm! The designer promised our results in a week, but my husband had to repeatedly call the firm for over 3 weeks. The worst was when we received the plan. The rendering of our front and back yards was handwritten, which I fould incredibly unprofessional and the plans were about 4 inches by 6 inches. The handwriting was illegible at this size and basically useless. And, there were no specifics included in the plan. Instead of recommending specific plants, flowers, & bushes, the designer had just instructed "bushes here." Overall this was a complete waste of money. You could take a picture of your yard and bring it to a nusery for free recommendations. There was absolutely no landscaping included in the plan and the microscope, handwritten plan was an embarrassment to a professional firm. Absolutely useless landscapers and over terrible and very disappointing experience. Angie Members - STAY AWAY. I'm honestly shocked this firm was vetted and approved by Angie's List. Very disappointing, |

We are very sorry you feel this way. The preliminary design was sent after meeting with her husband, via email. We never received a response regarding the design. If she was not happy with any part of this design we wish she would have communicated to us regarding her dislikes in design and what other information she expected.

Description of Work: Initially I bought the 4 hours of landscape design deal. They worked closely with me, listened carefully, and spent much more than 4 hours on the work. Impressed with that, I hired them to do most of the work they had designed. This included installing a large French drainage system, putting in a flagstone pathway, landscaping the perimeter of the yard and along around the base of the house, enclosing the open areas under a deck and sun room, building a firewood box, and removing some turf and replacing it with sod. Large trees, shrubs, and flowers were put in, a berm built, and existing plants and lots of bulbs moved and incorporated into the new design scheme. Along the way they totally cleaned up hedgerows that still had winter's leaves under them, pruned existing bushes, and did a general yard clean up. | |There were several rounds of modifications to plans requiring new cost estimates each time. All done with good cheer and promptly. | |Everyone worked hard and the place looked great! When the drainage needed modification and a few strips of sod died, they came out to do the work immediately at no charge. | |Working with Bainbridge was a great experience. I would definitely use them again.

I used them through a big deal on Angie's List. It went very well. They were excellent. The guy who showed up was the owner. He was very prompt, punctual, very courteous and very professional. I don’t know about the price though, because I didn’t compare it to anyone else. I have no idea, and I couldn’t tell if it was a good price or not. He explained things well and he was patient. I think it would be good working with the guy. In terms of design too, it turned out to be pretty nice. The only thing I don’t know about is the price, because I have nothing to compare it to. I can't say the price was great or if it was bad. I know the price was very cheap for the design. He was very proactive, but not in a bad way. With regard to punctuality, he has come over twice, and he would come right on the dot. I would definitely use them again in the future once I figure out if the pricing is good.

Walt (hardscaping) and Ashley (plant landscaping) did an outstanding job on this project! They responded promptly to my call, provided a beautiful, effective, permeable paver design, and helped me select attractive pavers that coordinate with the style of my home. The price quote was not the lowest, but the job came in on budget with no surprises. Walt and Ashley are very experienced and inspire a lot of confidence. They answered questions promptly and came by the job site every day that the workers were there. The work crew was professional and did an expert job, cleaning up the job site at the end of every day. My perennials were lifted carefully prior to the job and replaced afterwards. Ashley said if anything doesn't make it thought the winter, they will replace it next spring. The work was done right on schedule, though the we lost one day due to torrential rain during Sandy. It's good if you can be on site while the work is being done. Even though the workers and I had a copy of the design, I needed to give them some clarifications on the pattern I wanted for the pavers to be laid. They had helpful suggestions and I love the finished pattern. The driveway has worked well in absorbing rainwater and not allowing it to flow to the street. Neighbors are still commenting on the lovely new driveway. I have not had any problems with the driveway, but Walt gave me a three year warranty on the work and assured me he'll come back and fix anything that goes wrong. There's a lifetime warranty on the pavers. I'm very pleased and highly recommend this company.

We discussed the areas in which I needed help and was given the design at a later date. I received the plat with the drawings of where to place flowers and bushes. I was also given several color pictures of the actual plants. This was enormously helpful to me as I had no idea what combinations of plants would look well together. It was a great deal for me. I have not yet implemented the design, but look forward to doing so in the Spring.

The entire experience was great...the company delivered everything they promised...staff was professional...prompt...so very helpful.
Description of Work: My husband and I purchased a set amount of hours for a landscape plan for our yard. The staff (Ashley) was extremely professional and full of great ideas from plant selection to style options . She was prompt in her email responses and arrival to survey our grounds. At this time we have not moved forward w/ the actual execution of the plan: not because of Bainbridge, but because of other unexpected home repairs. Thanks Ashley!!!

Everyone has choices to make but we cannot recommend Walter and his company. Please note that the date provided is an approximate for the last date someone from Bainbridge provided service. We contracted with Bainbridge for a deck, to include recessing for a hot tub, pavers around a built in pool and fencing; Walter and his crew also worked with the pool installation company and installed the hardware for the handrail and the diving board -- the pool was done on Walter's design and it is beautiful. Brian the lead carpenter on the deck was a pleasure to work with. I will say we are satisfied with our deck, not with all the hoopla we had to go through to get everything completed. Walter came and provided some fantastic drawings, way more than we had envisioned and way out of our price range (full estimate was over 200,000). Walter connected us with Anthony Sylvan for the pool. After all contracts were signed (should have waited to sign both at the same time, but Walter pushed me to sign his first and I did...hindsight is always golden). When the pool people came to mark where the pool was going, I had noted that I wanted the pool in a slightly different location (moving one end back about a foot, nothing major)...well, Walter balled up the paper in his hands and threw it, noting "why don't you just mess with my designs" or something to that affect. There is a lot more to say, but I believe this is a huge telling sign. Whose yard is it anyway, who is paying to have the work done, etc? Another important note is that we were adamant from day one, before we signed the contract, that the fencing we wanted around the pool was to have wood cemented in under the columns (apologize for wrong terminology) where the panels are connected. We reiterated it, it was written in the contract, no mistakes. We requested a white vinyl fence. When it was getting close to fence time, we asked if there were samples of the types of fence. Walter dropped off some information with my husband about ONE type of fence and when we questioned him the next day about some things, we were surprised to find out that he had already ordered the fence (without consulting us) which was not compatible for using the wood posts. When we noted that fence was not acceptable and did not meet our specifications or the contract, we were told we would have to pay a restocking fee when the fence came in if we did not accept it. There were other issues. The workers came and started every morning at 6am; Walter wanted his guys to work one weekend and we sent a reply email that we did not want work happening at our home on the weekend. We received a reply that there was nothing in the contract that said they could not work weekends so they were coming anyway. We replied that although there was nothing in the contract that said they could not come, there was nothing in the contract that said they could come and since noise was happening five days a week at 6am, we wanted our weekend and they were not to show up. With numerous problems, we let Walter know that we were looking into hiring a contract lawyer (it really was this bad). LONG story short, Walter sat down with us and we had him finish the project that we had contracted since it would have been hard to find someone else to pick up midstream. We signed the contract in mid June and the final inspection on the last item of the project was the weekend of Sandy in October.
Description of Work: Bainbridge built a deck with a recessed portion for a hot tub and then installed the pavers around the built in pool and the fencing. Also, they installed the hardware for the handrail and diving board for the pool and laid the riverrock we purchased for around the pool pavers inside the fence. During initial meeting, Bainbridge wanted to install "low maintenance trees/shrubs" around the pool but since we didn't want to worry about cleaning more leaves, etc out of the pool, we opted for just rock. We spend several tens of thousands of dollars for the deck, pool, pavers, etc, and do not wish to provide an exact amount. Note that during our meetings prior to signing the contract (we had several, in fact, Walter just showed up one day after we told him not to come---should have been a sign I guess), Walter informed us that he would be onsite every day, overseeing the work, to include the pool installation since he referred the pool company and it was his design. Walter may have "stopped in" periodically, but he was not onsite everyday for the duration of the project as he said he would be. One item that Walter recommended and we were extremely pleased with was the slats for the railings. We had originally noted we wanted the regular square but Walter recommended the thin black round ones which allow for a more rich look and more visability when watching the wildlife in our backyard.

Response from Bainbridge Outdoor Design Building Inc
At Bainbridge Outdoor Design Build, we always strive to provide the best in customer service, creative designs, and quality workmanship for all our clients no matter what the project is. It is very upsetting to us that Member feels this way about the services that we provided, but feel that we should point out that there are a few false statements made. Walter (the owner) and other design staff where on site every day that the crews were working. Just because Member may not have seen us herself, does not mean that we were not there either first thing in the morning or through the day when the owners were at work. Anytime the customers need to reach us were available via email or phone and scheduled all meetings at their convenience. Our crews were on site every day around 7am (due to the fact that the job site was so close to our shop and we were not traveling in rush hour traffic every day). We observed all local noise ordinances and our goal in starting each day that early was to make sure that all of our crews where off site so that the clients would be able to enjoy their time with their family once they were home for the evening. This has been the only client that has every complained that we showed up too early (which we would have adjusted our start time had this been brought to our attention in the beginning instead of several weeks into the project. As far as being pushed into signing their contract, I must say that we have never pushed any customer into signing a contract with our firm. We do not believe in it. We will offer discounts from time to time if a client will sign before a certain date, but we always give time for that customer to look it over and be 100% sure that this is something they want to do . Once a contract is signed, we will work with the client to go over different color samples and help them pick out what products/colors they want. The only time we had to “push” Member about anything on this project was to pick out the pavers. We had to make a decision so that we could get the product ordered and have it delivered in time for installation. We give fixed pricing for our contracts, not estimates, with the only additions being any changes that are made during the installation process by the customer (which are giving to the customer before any changes are made). We are happy to make any changes that our clients want during the process as long as we can (do to site conditions, permit requirements, etc.). If an idea cannot be implemented, we offer other alternatives that will both pass inspections and also fit in with the concept of the design. We strive to complete all projects as timely as possible, but with this job, we had many other factors that pushed back the completion date. One being the pool company, they had several things that had to get done first before our crews could come back in and finish the pool deck. During this wait time, both the pool company and ourselves had to wait for local inspections to take place and signed off on before we could go further. Once all items passed inspection we were on site the next day and continued on with the completion of the pool deck and the rest of the project.

This was my 2nd time working with Walter, Ashley and the team at Bainbridge. The first time that I contracted with them they excavated our old driveway and walkway and put in a new one made of tumbled pavers and blue stone. They also built a new front porch on our house where we had just had a small stairway entrance previously. The entire project turned out beautifully! It transformed our home. The compliments literally poured in from neighbors and guests. The second project was at our new home (purchased 1 year ago). Bainbridge removed huge old bushes that lined the entire front of the house and obscured the view of the yard from the porch. They built a dry-stack stone wall around the corner of the house and then filled all of the beds with laurels, boxwoods, japanese maple, weeping red bud, etc. Ashley was great to work with in the landscape planning and the end result is fantastic. Everyone loves the new look... especially us! Walter, the owner, has a fantastic aesthetic. He does electronic drawings of the proposed look and does beautiful designs. The Bainbridge employees are true craftsmen. I watched step by step as they installed the driveway/walkway and boy do they do it right! The end result is a truly high quality installation and an incredible value. I got 3 quotes in both cases and their pricing was always competitive with the other quotes. I have no doubt, however, that Bainbridge is a much better value. I have compared their work to others that were charging the same amount, and Bainbridge truly blows it away. I will hire Walter and his team again in a heartbeat for any future outdoor projects!
Description of Work: Job 1: Bainbridge excavated our old driveway and walkway and put in a new one made of tumbled pavers and blue stone. They also built a new front porch on our house where we had just had a small stairway entrance previously. (If I remember correctly this project cost $12k all in) Job 2: Bainbridge removed huge old bushes that lined the entire front of the house and obscured the view of the yard from the porch. They built a dry-stack stone wall around the corner of the house and then filled all of the beds with laurels, boxwoods, japanese maple, weeping red bud, etc. (The cost of this project was $5400).

The company does nice work and Walter and Ashley were responsive to our ideas, The design of the sidewalk is very attractive and we appreciated that they also built it up in the area by the porch where there had been some settling. The plantings are smaller than we were hoping (yes, they will grow) and I wish they had a bit more impact -- perhaps they will come next spring. Ashley did take care to make sure there was color rotating through the seasons, which I know we will appreciate. They returned to sod the area adjacent to the sidewalk and fix a small place that had settled, and they were very specific with the care instructions.
Description of Work: Removed existing sidewalk and replaced and expanded it with pavers Removed much existing shrubbery and replaced it with new plants and bushes.

His designs were great - highly professional and polished. THere may be a big delta in prices, though, because the amount he wanted to do the actual landscape work was really high. Walter was knowledgable and professional, and his designs were great - just expensive to execute with his firm. Perhaps you get what you pay for, I don't know.

I got an Angie's LIst deal for the design and Ashley was quick in scheduling an appointment to see the space. I thought she listened well to what I wanted but realized later that while she took the plat, it didn't provide and she didn't take actually measurements of the yard spaces. Actually producing the design took her more time than she'd estimated. I appreciated all the photos of plants that came with the plan and the horticultural knowledge that she shared when presenting the plan. I asked for several revisions to the quotations that Bainbridge provided for actually doing the work and she was initially very responsive but became less so as time went on. I ended up finding a cheaper contractor to do the actual work and realized during installation that due to lack of measurements, parts of her design weren't to scale leaving open parts on my yard. The plant placement themselves also seem a bit off--too large for a given space, too crowded, prone to grow over a walkway, etc. While she is a horticulturalist, I'd recommend using this company for hardscape instead.

He was very high and I didn’t like his designs. The estimate was for $218,000. He was very personable and he was a very nice guy. He worked hard on the design but I felt that he didn’t listen to me. I told him I didn’t want to go above $100,000 and I wanted a professional design is what I told him and to me his design was not professional. I wanted a designer or architect to do the design. He took a shot at it and I decided I didn’t like it. It was double the price I wanted to pay. When a house is worth half a million dollars you can’t get back much by putting something worth $200,000 in the backyard. It is one thing to put $50,000 in the backyard and it is another thing to put $200,000. I was willing to take some amount of the loss but I certainly wasn’t willing to put so much in to the pool and an oasis in my backyard. I have no experience with the work he does but the design he did was way over the budget I gave him. He seemed to be under the impression that we could do a little piece at a time as if that is going to make a difference. It was not a matter of having the money but it was a matter of spending the money. To me the design looked like a big lolly pop and I didn’t like it. He worked very hard and he tried to deliver something. I didn’t value the design but that doesn’t mean he didn’t put a lot of effort into it. He didn’t listen to me in my particular instance. I paid $90 for the design and I got it through one of the specials. It was a $400 drawing but because of the special I got it at $90.

We are only aware that this client disliked the original design that much through this review and was scheduled to meet with her again with our revised design when she call us to cancel our appointment. The revised design we were prepared to review with them looked more like what we think she was envisioning. Everyone has to find the designer that works best for them and their project. We wish nothing but the best for her and her family as they go forward with their projects. Our Master Plans include all of our client's wish list items in a creative design. By starting with a Master plan, the client knows exactly where and at what elevation everything is going. This allows for our client to prioritize their needs, and allows us to move forward with part or all of the designed projects. As to doing projects in phases; we offer this to our clients because sometimes the wish lists exceeds budgets and this give our clients a way to still do some work without having to do everything all at once if they are not able to. A lot of companies want all or nothing, but we like to give another option to work with our clients. Again, we wish nothing but the best for Mrs. Stoever and her family.

It was wonderful to work with everyone from Bainbridge. The workers who laid the pavers and planted the plants were kind and listened to what we wanted done. They went out of their way to make sure we were happy with the job they were doing. They never rushed but worked carefully. Walter Bainbridge kept in constant contact with us to make sure we were happy with the work and the progress. When we had concerns, he promptly addressed them and pleasantly dealt with us. Ashley had several meetings with us to discuss the plants she chose and she stopped by to make sure they were doing well. We would gladly use this company in the future. wi
Description of Work: We had Bainbridge tear up our existing driveway and front walkway and put down new pavers as well as landscape the front. In the back, they used flagstone for a new expanded patio with a seating wall and walkway to the back of the property. They completely landscaped our backyard. Ashley chose some beautiful plants that look lovely with our plants we already hand and wanted to save.

Everything was great. The Bainbridge workers were very professional and worked closely with me to ensure that my ideas were implemented successfully, and their solution to the drainage problem was very effective. They also followed up to ensure everything was going well later on.
Description of Work: They did some landscaping which included drainage work, planting, and lighting.
