Other plumbers had said they would find a solution or tear out the wall -- they never called back. I went to Shreve McGonagal plumbing supply shop and ordered a new fixture set that would meet dimensions of old one (they were very helpful in making sure sizes would work.) When they came to install the new fixture, the plumber was so skilled that he was able to reach inside the opening in the tile and replace the valve -- including soldering it -- with no damage to the tile and without having to make any holes in the wall behind. (No, this house does not have an access panel -- great 1970's construction.) Brilliant job -- looks wonderful.
Description of Work: Replaced old shower valve and installed new valve and new shower fixture, escutcheon, shower and tub faucets (replacing old 1970's fixtures.) Note that modern valves are not compatible with the new fixtures.

Overall, the experience went really well. We used a number of different plumbers in the past, and it was really hit or miss. These plumbers arrived on time, explained to us what was happening before they did the work, and then unclogged the drain. They did a lot of testing when they finished the work to make sure that the drain was truly unblocked. It worked out really well.
Description of Work: They were able to unblock a drain that was slow.

I called Shreve and they had someone in my area who arrived very soon afterwards, which was wonderful. The plumber was pleasant and professional. He quickly changed out the faucet cartridge. The job took MAYBE thirty minutes. I was very happy until after he left. I checked the price of the cartridge he replaced because I had no idea what they cost. At Home Depot the exact same part (same brand and part number) costs $19.97. So the labor for this repair was $260.00. That seems excessive for a thirty minute, easy job. I realize plumbing is expensive, but $260 for thirty minutes?
Description of Work: Our tub faucet was leaking a thin stream of water. Shreve took the handle apart, replaced the inner cartridge, and put it back together.

I inadvertently dropped a hard plastic piece of a drain plug down our basement floor drain. I could not reach the obstruction and water started baking up on the basement floor. After checking Angie's List, I called Shreve-McGonegal who dispatched a plumber in short order. The plumber arrived early and with great dexterity was able to remove the object from the drain after about 30 minutes. I cannot thank Shreve-McGonegal enough for the outstanding job and the professionalism of their plumber. I also appreciated the $50.00 off Angie's List coupon.
Description of Work: The plumber dislodged and retrieved a hard plastic piece of a drain plug that had dropped into our basement drain, 2-3 feet underneath the floor. After vacuuming standing water from the drain, the plumber fashioned two metal rods to dislodge, hook, and remove the obstruction without letting it fall farther down the drain.

The service rendered by the technician is better than the dispatch center. When I called the company, the woman at the dispatch center was not very patient. She said the technician will diagnose when he arrives and give me a quote. If I do not want to have the service done, then there will be a dispatch fee of $50. All I asked was if the dispatch fee will also be added if I decide to use the service. Then the woman lost her patience: and quot;I can give you my supervisor if you want, but I didn't decide on the pricing.and quot; All I asked was a clarification on the dispatch fee. That was all. If this company did not have an A rating, I would have aborted by then. The technician Gerry was late in the designated window because he was held up by the previous appointment and because he was lost. When he finally showed up, the only description on the ticket was and quot;broken toiletand quot; although I spent a long time with the woman at the dispatch center. Again the dispatch center had the worst service. Then I was disappointed that he did not attempt to repair the broken valve. But I think this is the trend --- no one tries to fix anything any longer. When he suggested replacing both the valve and the flapper, I wasn't too happy. Why are you suggesting me to replace the flapper that is clearly not broken??? On the second thought, it makes sense from a price perspective. Replacing both parts costs $215 (minus $50 first-time customer coupon). Replacing the valve or the flapper alone each costs $180, so why not replacing both to save the trouble? In addition, they provide one-year warranty so that makes me feel slightly better. (p.s. But I have to say the original valve broken shortly after one-year manufacture warranty.) This is a very simple job. What I like about the technician is that he has excellent customer service skills and never loses his patience. The last thing I want is to have a hot-tempered technician at my house. I don't want to pay for the lack of professionalism. I am generally happy with the service overall, but I am not very happy about the attitude dispatch center and that the technician did not have the latest maps on his GPS.
Description of Work: The water kept refill the water tank for the toilet although the tank was full. The technician replaced the broken valve, as well as the flapper.

Excelled experience. Plumber came as stated. A four hour window, but he arrived early and completed the work as required. They have a standard bill established for each routine task. The fee seemed high but frankly they are allowing for labor time to snake under a kitchen sink, especially an old house takes time. They normally have to remove the garbage disposal and frequently replace the shut off valves. Done within an hour, and done well. We are glad we chose them for this task.

Called at midnight for emergency service due to sewer back in basement. Friendly, courteous direct contact with plumber (Gerry) over the phone. He told me upfront the cost of the after hours charge which I appreciated. And, he said he would arrive in two hours because he needed to go to the office to pick up certain equipment. He arrived sooner, identified problem and resolved it. Despite having been working since 7 am this morning, he was personable, polite and professional. He was careful to be be neat when moving equipment/walking through the house. I paid the $ 150 after hours charge plus fee for snaking the drain. I would definitely use the company again and was very impressed. Some companies advertise emergency services but when you call, you get an answering machine only. This company truly does have emergency services. My only suggestion is that they indicate clearly on the after hours recording, what number to push to reach someone. It's a bit unclear on the recording. A+ experience.

I had had a similar problem with another frost-free faucet and had used another company so I knew it could be expensive to replace. When I asked for an estimate, the employee on the phone said not all of the faucets had to be replaced; some could be repaired. I asked if he had a list of prices for different services, but he did not answer me. He did, however, say the cost of repairing the faucet would be about $175. He did not give me a price for replacement even though I asked. Since I had an Angie's coupon for 10/% off, I decided to go ahead and schedule a visit. The technician came at the scheduled time, replaced the faucet (It could not be repaired), and was thorough and professional. My only complaint was that the employee I spoke with on the phone was not forthcoming about the price. Since the technician arrived with a notebook with prices for each job, I can only assume the man on the phone had one, too. Next time I won't use this company if I can't get an answer to fixed pricing when I call.

While I wasn't really unhappy with the attitude of the first plumber, he really wasn't very professional compared to the more sober second plumber. He also had an attitude about the plumbing design which admittedly was old and probably antiquated in today's terms, but that's what plumbers sometimes have to deal with, so complaining about the system won't solve my problem. The fact that the solution to S-M's problem was so obvious leads me to believe that either S-M doesn't supply its employees with the equipment needed or maybe that they either fail to properly train or hire plumbers with the knowledge needed for situations like this. In view of the high prices charged by S-M and any plumbing operation, one should expect better preparation than this. One thing I and anyone needing plumbing services should do in general is to check with home owner's associations ahead of time to see if a problem such as this is covered by the HOA and also to see if neighbors with adjoining sewage systems are experiencing the same problems. This depends on the sewage system in place, as well as the HOA agreement.
Description of Work: A plumber came over to drain my kitchen sink. He was nearly one hour late but that was not the major problem. The plumber spent over an hour trying to clear out the drain from my kitchen sink. He made several attempts to clear the drain, but informed me that the drain emptied into a common pipe with my neighbor, as these are older, adjoining row houses. Apparently, this is a design not used in more modern construction, but it is common in older, more urban neighborhoods where buildings were constructed many years ago and not modernized when the buildings were renovated a number of years later. The plumber informed me that head on his clean out tool could not accommodate such a sharp turn. I did inform the plumber that my neighbor had a similar problem. After this vain attempt, I called the home owner's association and they informed me that problems such as these were common and that the association would be responsible for clearing out the drainage system. The plumber indicated that it would take all day for them to do it. I wound up paying full charge for this service and will now make an attempt to get at least partial reimbursement from my home owner's association and/or my neighbor. The association had a plumber in my home a few hours later with a different head on his clean out tool that he said was designed for such sharp turns in the drainage system. This plumber indicated that the plumber who had been sent by Shreve-McGonegal did not have the correct head on his tool and that is why he couldn't negotiate the sharp turn in the drainage system. This plumber also mentioned that the first plumber, when hearing that my neighbor had the same problem, should have informed me that the home owner's association should handle this as the problem lay in a common sewage line and not within my home and informed me at first that I should contact the homeowner's association with the problem before starting any work. He also informed me that any plumber working in more urban environments in this area should have known that such drainage designs are common in older homes and have had the proper head on his equipment. In addition to all this, the second plumber was done in a half hour or so and did not charge me anything as the association was charged for this call. He also informed me that unlike Shreve-McGonegal, his company charged by the hour rather than a flat rate and that the charge, even with an assistant, would have been substantially lower than what S-M charged me.

My kitchen sink was clogged. I called several plumbers recommended on Angie's List, but Shreve McGonegal was the one who could come the soonest. They originally said they could come the next morning, but asked for a contact number in the event they could come sooner. They were actually able to come the same day I called. Thetwo men who came were clean, efficient, and gave me the cost estimate right up front. They had my sink unclogged in about a 1/2 hour. Thanks to the coupon on Angie's List, I was able to save $50 off the bill. Both men were friendly and courteous. I really appreciated the prompt and excellent service!

They did the job well enough, however, I was out of town and had to deal with them over the phone. As I explained the situation from N.C. I sensed an irritated attitude by the person on the other end of the line. I was about 300 miles from the problem and had to depend on them to deal with my sons who would only be home on a specific morning. Luckily, all went well, however, I do not want to deal with them again.

Repair tech arrived on time and was pleasant and professional. Explained simple repair for shower head that I can perform myself. Repaired disposal quickly and efficiently. After consultation, had sump pump replaced (couldn't risk another basement flood after recent hurricane and heavy rains). So far so good; repair prices relatively high but within reason. As to leaky toilet, repair tech said repair would be over $200. I still can't figure out what you can do to an existing toilet to cost more than $200. When I asked about replacement toilet, again the toilet cost and installation charges were sky high. Needless to say, did not repair toilet; I can turn water on and off manually until I find a more reasonable repair quote. We discovered a substantial leak under the kitchen sink during the course of disposal repair. Again, the estimate for repair was very expensive. On a related note, purchase and installation of a new faucet (which seems to be the cause of the leak) was over $1000. I was satisfied with the work I agreed to but completely astounded by the estimates for additional work. Grade B for professionalism: when requesting charge authoriztion, repair tech initially reported cost to home office without deducting Angie's List coupon, even though I had presented coupon and we had orally agreed on reduced price.

I called a number of companies that specialize in cleaning up flooded basements but because of the rains in the area everyone was booked so I called Shreve McGonegal because they could clean up the basement and look at some other plumbing problems I had. The plumber called ahead to give me time to get home. He gave an estimate on plumbing work for my upstairs bathroom that ranged from basic repair to high end and didn't push a solution. He cleaned up what he could in my basement but realized he would need additional equipment so he brought in another plumber but he didn't charge me for the overtime because he said he started the work during normal business hours. It took a long time to clean up the mess and it was a nasty job but they were extremely pleasant and professional. I would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: They pumped out my flooded basement (4-6 inches of water) and then cleaned out the sewer drain that had gotten backed up because of all of the rain.

We have a water filtration system for the entire house. We recently moved into the house with the understanding that the filter needed to be changed and this was something that we should have been able to do ourselves. Unfortunately, as it had been multiple years since the filter had been changed, the compartment was frozen shut. We tried to open it, but were fearful of damaging the pipes. We called a separate plumber and were told that we would need to replace the entire system to include cutting pipes. We decided to join Angie's List and called Shreve McGonegal because of the wonderful ratings. The company sent Hai out to fix the problem and within 15 minutes, he had the filter changed. He explained how to avoid the problem of the frozen filtration unit in the future and ensure my husband was able to change it himself when needed. Hai was absolutely wonderful and I would use this company again without hesitation.

I had a minor kitchen sink leakage problem and called them early in the morning in hopes of getting it taken care of within the day. By the time I made the call, to the time when my sink was fixed was a matter of several hours. They were extremely professional with their service and the problem I originally had (leak coming from my disposal) was remedied. My only gripe is the price. Even after using the Angie's List coupon, I still felt that I was overpaying for the service. However, given their speed and quality of service (all repairs come with an automatic 1-year warranty), I will be able to go to sleep to go to sleep comfortable tonight.
Description of Work: My kitchen sink has a disposal that connects directly to the sink along with to the dish washer. All water flow goes through the disposal and into sewage. The connection from the disposal to the sewage line had a leak caused by the vibrations of the disposal. The repair performed was strengthening that seal with metal pipes versus the plastic pipes I originally had been using.

We had a major blockage in our sewage line that was causing any water down any train or toilet to back up into our house. This company responded on a Friday night and had the line cleared in just a couple of hours. Gerry - the individual plumber who came - was very professional, knowledgable, experienced, and courteous. He took care of the problem and gave some good advice on stuff we would want to do prevent a relapse. He also answered some general questions we had about our house's plumbing (we just moved in) and advised us on some stuff we'd want to take care of and watch out for. He was patient and despite being there until almost 11:00 on Friday night never once seemed put out or in a rush. If we need a plumber again, we're calling Shreve McGonegal and if possible requesting Gerry again. The charge for an after hours call was $150, which seems reasonable enough, though the base price was a little steep. Still, you get what you pay for and the service was worth the cost.
Description of Work: Shreve McGonegal cleared a major blockage from our house's sewer line. They employed a 100 foot snake that unfortunately had to go down through a toilet line because our main line was rusted shut. After the line was cleared, the plumber reinstalled the toilet and cleaned the bathroom floor as well as part of the basement floor that had some back up. This was an emergency call on Friday night and they responded very quickly.

We needed to have a utility sink installed in the laundry area of our basement. The plumbing connections were already there but the water supply, drain pipes, and connections were decades old in that spot and needed to be replaced. The drain, which had not been used in some time, also needed to be professionally snaked. My DIY snake wasn't able to do the job. We supplied the tub and faucets. We got two bids for the job and this one was a bit lower than the other. I appreciated that the estimator for Shreve didn't give me a hard sell, like the other company's guy. I would have liked to have gotten more estimates but most firms (including several highly rated ones on Angie's List who claim to give free estimates) just wanted to quote me their hourly rates on the phone. I still think that nearly $1200 for what turned out to be a four-hour job was on the high side, but admit that I have not had a lot of plumbing work done and so may not be familiar with prevailing rates. As noted, this was the lower of two estimates. The plumber who performed the job arrived a little late but not unreasonably so. The office did let me know that he was running late. He worked straight through for nearly four hours and did a few small extras that I did not expect, such as bolting the tub to the floor. Bottom line: they did the job quickly and efficiently with no problems. If I had to do it over again I might have looked into getting a different kind of tub rather than the cheapie one I got at Home Depot.

Overall, the service was average. At first I was pleasantly surprised by the promptness. I called in the evening and they were able to come by the next morning. Given that this listing was on Angie's I expected a reasonable price. When I spoke to the person in their office she said that and quot;all projects are priced depending on the workand quot; -- she refused to give me an hourly rate. She said there is a $50 dispatch fee, the electrician will give you an estimate and then you can decide to use them. So at the most, I would be out $50 bucks. Wasn't too happy about this, but thought -- they seem reputable, so why not. I gave her my number and we scheduled a visit the next morning at 7am. However, she took my number down wrong and I had to call them a half hour into the set time to figure things out. Instead of getting the work started at 7am, we were now starting at 8am. The technician came in, I explained what needed to be done and he got started. I admit my mistake in not asking what the cost would be -- however, if it is there protocol to give estimates...part of the responsibility lies on him as well. The work took about 2 hours. The service technician was knowledgeable, friendly, worked at good pace. I was shocked when I saw the total of $515. I asked for the breakdown because there was one line that said $450 and another line that said $65. I asked for the explanation -- the $450 was for labor... so, yes, indeed! there is an hourly rate. The 65 was for parts. I am now thinking that their charge is $225/hr -- what a ripoff!! After the technician left, I called the office again, asking for what their hourly rate is for an electrician...the same woman picked up and again, she told me that there was not an hourly rate. I told her what the bill said and what the electrician told me and I was promptly put on hold. A few minutes later a man picks up and asks if he can help me. I have no idea who or why this person is picking up. I then ask him the same question and he says, well... and quot;yes, we do charge $50 per quarter hourand quot; -- WHAT? Those are close to legal fees... They offered no discount for starting an hour late. The lady who said there was no hourly rate never came back on the phone. So disappointing. Long story short - yes the service was good, the price is horrendous. Would never ever use them again. Why wouldn't they just tell me their rates up front? Because they know they are too expensive.
Description of Work: 5 Electrical outlets were tested and fixed and fitted for fire codes, the microwave plug was fitted with an outlet as well.

Back in mid-July, I discovered a small leak coming from my upstairs bathroom through the ceiling into my downstairs bathroom. Shreve-McGonegal sent a very professional plumber promptly who found the problem (see separate report from me). It turned out that the old copper pipes in my 70 year old house had corroded and were starting to leak. The water for the upstairs bath was turned off temporarily. A couple of days later, I met with the supervisor and he provided me with a clear indication of the work needed: replace the old copper pipes with PVC pipes, replace the upstairs shower drain and trap, take out the old tile on the floor of the upstairs shower and up to a point on the sides of the shower and replace. Finally, put in a new ceiling in the downstairs bath to replace the one they cut into to replace the pipes. Shreve-McGonegal began the job as promised on August 9 with two very professional and courteous gentleman who consistently did an excellent job throughout! The job was completed one day earlier than expected. The work was professional, thorough, and I couldn't be more pleased. They accidentally broke a light fixture cover in the downstairs bathroom, and promptly without cost to me, replaced the light fixture. That is the mark of a fine and professional business - that if an accident occurs, they promptly make it right without additional cost to the customer. I am very pleased with Shreve-McGonegal and am happy to recommend them with a grade of "A".

While the price was a little on the expensive side for my budget, you get what you pay for and better to pay a bit more for a high-quality job by high-quality professionals.
