Great job, high quality work. Great price, reasonable and cheaper compared to others. Not pushy to try and sell high priced items. He and workers were great. Very trustworthy too. Did a great job even painting the cabinets (other contractors tried to push me to get new cabinets). Would definitely hire again.

After months of living and cooking out of our basement due to a painful stop and start and stop DIY attempt at this massive project, Mike met with us during the Christmas holiday week and began work right away. We were so relieved to have such a skilled, knowledgeable, experienced, responsive and kind person taking over our nightmare renovation. Greeting him each morning on our way out the door was always a pleasure to discuss the plan for the day, and coming home to see what was done while we were out was extremely exciting. Mike has gone above and beyond to take the stress of this renovation off our shoulders, and has ensured that every detail is addressed to our particular (and sometimes fussy) standards. He is extremely responsive, a must for any renovation, and there has never been an issue that Mike has not dealt with promptly and professionally. We hope to have Mike back for years to come!
Description of Work: We had Mike renovate our entire 1st floor Fairlington townhouse, to including reconfiguration of kitchen, moving bearing wall, installing new ceiling, electrical, floor refinishing, cabinet installation, and custom built-in.

Mike and his crew do great work. Mike is very responsive and easy to work with. For both the kitchen and bathroom projects there were delays in the delivery of some of the cabinets, but both times they were able to work their schedule around the delays. Mike worked directly with the cabinets suppliers to make sure the dimensions were right. When unforeseen problems occurred (like the bathroom exhaust fan and kitchen light fixtures being too deep for the space) he let me know right away and was able to suggest good solutions. He turned two hideous rooms in an old condo into beautiful, functional spaces.
Description of Work: Remodeled my kitchen about 6 years ago and recently remodeled my bathroom. Both projects included a complete demolition of the old room down to the studs. For the kitchen they installed new cabinets and tile backsplash, replaced and painted painted the walls and replaced an old dropped ceiling with drywall and recessed lights. For the bathroom they installed a new bathtub, tiled the walls (including a 3-shelf niche) and ceiling in the tub area, replaced and painted the drywall, put in a new tile floor, installed a medicine cabinet, custom vanity and wall cabinet (recessed into the wall), and installed a new exhaust fan and light fixtures. They also installed grab bars including blocking behind the walls in the tub/shower area. In both rooms they also replaced outdated plumbing and added insulation.

We used Mike Staples to remodel our bathroom and were happy with the work so we called him first when we wanted some work done in our kitchen. We scheduled an appointment to go over what we wanted done which he forgot about. He did finally end up coming over to talk through what we wanted done but never got back to me with an estimate. I don't appreciate contractor's who don't want the work wasting my time or at least having the courtesy to let me know they can't take the job. Who's interviewing who here?

It went wonderfully. Staples did an excellent job and I couldn't recommend them more highly. Mike Staples was extremely responsive via phone and email when I had questions or needed to communicate, and always kept me informed and asked me about design decisions. He was extremely personable, professional, and realistic - we weren't looking for the world's greatest bathroom, but more one with quality fixtures - not cheap, but not over the top either. He had several good suggestions and didn't try to oversell us on work - he knew what we were looking for and worked with us. Staples work crew was great. They showed up everyday promptly at 8 a.m. and never left before 5 p.m. They stayed busy throughout the day - no long breaks smoking in the backyard or elsewhere or lounging around. They worked efficiently and steadily and were extremely productive. They put tarps and plastic down to keep the areas as clean as possible, were respectful and friendly, and could be trusted in our home. I was truly impressed with the work ethic and quality of work of the crew - all corners were square, paint was smooth with crisp lines, tile was solid and straight, and finishes like molding and caulking were very neat - there were very few items on the punch list. It was clear that they weren't cutting corners or rushing through the job. Quality was excellent - my wife and I now want to make this our regular bathroom instead of our master bath that we re-did a few years ago :-) Staples had a realistic and prompt completion timeline and stuck to their schedule - none of this show up for 2 days and then disappear for a week. They came and worked solid until the job was done. No headaches at all in any of my dealings with them. Staples prices were extremely reasonable and fair, and Mike was forthright when talking about what something would cost, sometimes offering more cost effective alternatives in both labor and materials/fixtures. They are the perfect mix of quality and value - the work is something I would expect from a much larger company. In short, Staples exceeded our expectations in every way and we wouldn't hesitate for a moment to use them again.
Description of Work: Staples Remodeling renovated our basement bathroom. This included removing a wall to move the washer/dryer from the bathroom (really) until the utility room and replacing the wall. Redoing the bathroom was a total gut - new drywall, vanity, sink, toilet, tile, shower...all of it. They also installed tile and new drywall in the adjoining utility room, scraped the popcorn ceiling, and most importantly installed several new LED recessed lights - a huge improvement. In addition, they scraped the ceiling and installed recessed LED lights in the adjoining rec room - again, a huge improvement. Staples also installed some pocket doors in these areas.

Mike Staples was responsive and punctual. The estimate was right on target for final price. The work was done well and the bathroom looks great. Would have been an "A" grade except for several areas of neglect by crew -- work was conducted while we were out of town and when we returned, circuit breaker had been left off, leaving air conditioning off and house very hot; box of trash was left behind; carpet in adjoining room was dirty where washer/dryer had been moved out during work. I notified Mike and he was responsive to my concerns.
Description of Work: Bathroom/laundry room remodel -- removed laminate floor, installed tile; removed old sink, installed sink with vanity; installed mirror, new lights, bathroom fixtures; removed shelving, installed cabinet; installed pocket door; installed recessed pocket in wall for laundry electrical wires; painted.

This is the second bathroom we've renovated with Staples Remodeling. For this bathroom, we took the bathroom down to the studs and removed all the existing flooring. My wife and I picked out all the tub, toilet, vanity, fixtures hardware, etc., and Mike's team did all the hard work. They worked quickly and efficiently, installing an oversized tub, creating a recessed ledge in the shower, adding a decorative strip in the tile work, rerouting some plumbing, and making the original 1970s bathroom look amazing. The only hiccup with the project was fixed fast. Since the home was built in the '50s and last renovated in the '70s, the house has settled and isn't exactly square. When laying the floor tiles square to the threshold and walls it was discovered that the room was a slight parallelogram, and the grout seams accentuated how the exterior walls caused the room to look odd. Mike and his team immediately recognized this, discussed a plan with me to redo the tile in line with the vanity and tub to give the appearance that the room was in square. Though they had to remove the vanity and toilet and rip up the tile, Mike had a commitment to making sure if looked right and we were happy. A day later the tile was in again and looking great. I'd use Mike again and recommend him to my friends.

Mike Staples is an honest, trust-worthy knowledgeable and competent contractor who made the three bathrooms we had him remodel look amazing for much less than we would have paid the big-name company who advertises on the radio. Thank goodness before we signed a contract with the other company, we remembered that a neighbor had used Mike and went to see her bathroom. One look was all we needed to make us decide to call him for an estimate. Because he is popular, he explained that we would have to wait before he could actually work on our home; but knowing that, we still got him to give us an estimate. When the other company had come to do an estimate, they wouldn't even list line items or leave us anything but a folder about their company and let us write down the prices they estimated. They covered "all" materials but your choices were limited to things in books they brought, with no prices listed at all for them, whether it was a toilet, a faucet or whatever. (I'm sure that's a good way to hide costs and the amount of mark-up they tack onto every item). Mike, on the other hand, gave us a detailed estimate, explaining exactly what was covered. What's even better, he allowed us to buy our own materials (other than the rough-in materials and things like paint that he provided). That way we knew the true cost of the tub, the tile, the cabinets, the countertop, the faucets, etc. and there were no mark-ups and no surprises. In every case where he had a contractor's agreement with a supplier, he made sure that they passed his contractor's price break on to us. He and his crew took pains to keep our house clean and to clean up after themselves every day. When the job was finished, it was really finished, not just "paint ready" as the other company had promised. The cost of service above was for master bathroom, hall bathroom and powder room remodels, including all labor and rough materials, including paint. Even when I add in the cost of the materials we purchased, which I actually haven't sat down and done, I'm positive it is still less than the total the other company wanted BUT wait until you hear the difference of what was included. For example, I'll use the master bathroom. The other company's estimate did include all materials BUT they were only going to replace the floor tile in the master bathroom and retile around the existing tub; retile the shower but only replace the (plastic) shower pan; reinstall the same mirror; reinstall the same cabinets, and only replace the countertop, the toilet and the two faucets on the counter. In contrast, Mike and his crew moved a wall of the toilet room to enlarge the shower; installed a pocket door on the new toilet room (with a full-length mirror on the bathroom side); removed the old tub and installed a new freestanding one and a new freestanding tub filler; put new tile on all of the floors and in the shower; including making and tiling a full shower seat (not just a little corner one) and tiling the bottom of the shower; installed a new spa shower panel; installed new cabinets and their hardware; installed a new toilet; removed a soffit and recessed lights and redid the wall and ceiling and installed nice lights over new dual mirrors; moved two bathroom walls to allow for pocket doors leading into the master bedroom, instead of the traditional doors that had been there; moved our alarm touchpad, which was on that wall; installed new drywall, primed and painted there and primed and painted the entire master bathroom and installed hardware on the pocket doors; installed a new recessed light over the new tub; installed a light in the shower; installed a new bathroom fan in the bathroom portion; installed a new light and fan in the toilet room; removed old curtain rods and hardware and installed new ones and probably other things that I can't even remember! I won't list everything they did in the other bathrooms or you'll get eye strain from reading this. Suffice to say, everything was done well and their work looks wonderful. I'm sure that's enough to convince you of which company provided more and better service. To find an honest contractor with old-fashioned values, who really cares about his work in this day and age is VERY difficult, but we found that in Mike Staples. We would not hesitate to recommend him.

After having a bad experience with our last contractor, we were very hesitant to hire a new one for the work in our kitchen. However, Mike (the owner) and his crew did an amazing job and really revived our confidence in contractors. Mike was prompt in responding to my request for an estimate and was very honest with me off the bat about how far out he would have to book the work, if we chose to go with them. We found that his estimate was reasonable so we booked him to start work about 2.5 to 3 months out. Mike and his crew showed up on the exact date that he quoted at the time of the estimate and they had everything they needed to get started on the project. The few things they didn't have on hand, Mike went out and purchased that day. The work was done in 5 days, as quoted and for the exact amount estimated. Mike's crew was very friendly and respectful of our home. They did a great job of covering everything in plastic and keeping the dust out of the rest of our home (as much as you can do when the A/C is running, anyway). The crew arrived at 8am every morning, as expected, and Mike stopped by to check on progress at least once every day. Mike is a very hands-on owner which we really appreciated. He came by to check on the final product to make sure it met with his approval before he issued our final invoice. He was responsive to our questions and concerns via email and phone. In the end we were very happy with the final product and would absolutely hire Staples Remodeling for another project. As a sidenote I should mention that Mike is very familiar with the Fairlington neighborhood, the floorplans and the details of these homes. I would highly recommend him for work in this neighborhood, specifically.

Both renovations went according to plan with no work time lost. Any problems that occured were due to poor craftmanship on items chosen by us to replace old fixtures. In that line, I would not recommend American Standard products specifically their toilets. The Staples employees were friendly, extremely hard working and knowledgeable about all aspects of the renovations and left the workplace as neat as could be imagined for that type of work. Both jobs came in on time and on budget and look great.

The entire job was done on time and within the original estimate. It was a PLEASURE working with Mike Staples and his entire crew. They arrived every day as scheduled and cleaned up really well when they left in the evening. They were very considerate of my property and possessions, and my cranky neighbors! I have lived in my house for over 26 years and during that time I have used several contractors. Staples Remodeling is by far the best! Mike is extremely professional and went above and beyond to make me happy. My house now looks like a model home! I highly recommend Staple Remodeling!!!

Mike's estimate was exact. Even if a couple things were added he did not increase the price. He really wants everything to look good and wants his clients to be happy. He estimated 4-6 weeks and only went slightly over due to the fact that we needed some different decorative pieces that I decided on after the fact. His crew showed up every day right before 8am since they could start making noise in my area as of 8am and they were there until i got home most days by 5:30. They were extremely efficient, professional and kept the area and workspace very clean. Any issue that came up was immediately addressed. Mike went with me to select my cabinets and made sure everything would fit. He was also helpful with colors, styles and has a great deal of experience as to what may work. I would not hesitate to hire him in the future.
Description of Work: I hired Mike Staples to redo my entire kitchen, which included leveling the ceiling, moving baring wall and creating a new nook for my refrigerator. This also included new flooring, cabinets, fixtures and appliances.

Based on a reference from a friend, we called Mike Staples out to look at our kitchen and give us an estimate for tearing down a wall and repalcing a couple of cabinets. On March 1, 2010, Mr. Staples sent an estimate out, which we accepted and said we would like to proceed. Our HOA requires a variance, so we requested his help in procuring the necessary documentation. He referred us to a structural engineer who came out and performed an analysis. He also stated that we would have to purcahse the cabinets, so my wife and I went to Lowes and purchased custom cabinetry. During this time, Mr. Staples did not begin work as we had to wait on the variance from the HOA. After discussions with my wife, we decided to attempt to redo the floor in our kitchen as well. We sent Mr. Staples a request for a price on the floor. He provided one, which we asked for a reduced price. The floor, however, was never a part of the original contract. Roughly two weeks after we accepted his offer, Mr. Staples sent us an email saying that "I will have to decline the offer of doing your project due to prior contractual obligations." Never once during any discussion we had with Mr. Staples when we discussed timeframes did he ever reference any pending contractual obligations. I called him multiple times that afternoon to seek an explanation and left a voicemail requesting that he call me. Later that day, Mr. Staples called my wife's cell phone (not the number I left with him) to explain himself. He stated that he understood that we had a contract but that a bigger project, for a bank, had come along and he would rather do that project. As an upside, after hearing our story, Lowes waived the restocking fee and returned the cost of the cabinets. We had, however, already paid for the structural engineer. I cannot comment on the quality or type of work performed by Mr. Staples. I can, however, comment on his professionalism.

Member has posted a fairly accurate report of what transpired with the exception of the contract. We were still in negotiation of price and scope of work on this project when I declined his offer to do work. No contract was signed, no start date was ever established, no work was done, and no money exchanged hands.
