+ 2 moreJoe's was one of three quotes for the job. He arrived a little late for the estimate, but had called to alert us. We explained what we wanted, he took measurements and mailed a quote within a few days. Work began as scheduled. It was messy and dusty, but he and his crew took care to minimize impact on the rest of the house, and cleaned the site and hauled debris away each day. He gave us daily updates on status and next steps. When unexpected discoveries required change in plans,he provided a written cost estimate before proceeding. We appreciated his guidance on paint color selection. His suggestions were on target and we are very happy with the result.
Description of Work: Joe removed old wood paneling, re-framed the room, installed insulation, drywall and baseboards, and painted. He also enlarged an existing doorway and moved the electrical outlet to a new position. He also finished prepping and painting our kitchen after we ran out of steam - and time - after stripping the wall paper border.

Description of Work: They refinished the front door. It looks nice but when you put your hand on it; it is a little rough. They also did some roofing repair.

+ 7 moreJoe did an amazing job. He ran into many problems (the house was built in 1955) and found creative solutions using his skills and he did not charge us extra. Most handymen charge by the hour, but Joe gave us a flat fee up front and charged by the job. He was at our house all the time and did the work himself, delegating tasks to his crew, who were closely supervised by Joe. We were not as diligent about decluttering our house and Joe and his crew did a lot of moving our stuff around without an extra charge. Our house sold in record time and I believe that Joe had a lot to do with that. Throughout the process (which took 3 weeks), Joe always bore in mind that anything he did was for the sale of the house. In fact, when our realtor came to see the house after Joe finished, she stood for several minutes speechless at how Joe had transformed our house.
Description of Work: We were preparing to sell our home for sale and needed to replace carpets with laminate flooring, tile backsplash on kitchen wall, as well as several other kitchen walls, tile kitchen floor, paint entire interior of house and much of the exterior, replace attic fan, convert two small closets into one large one in master bedroom.

+ -1 moreJoe's great. He recently did work for me shaving down a wooden door that had swollen so badly that it wouldn't close anymore. Not a good thing when its the back door to your condo. He showed up on time and tackled the job, which was to take out an old laminate countertop (w/laminate backsplash) and my old sink. He was really concerned about making sure that he didn't damage my tile backsplash and he went out of his way to figure out a way to take that old countertop out without damaging anything. At one point, a piece of drywall came off when he removed part of the backsplash and he immediately offered to patch up the wall so I wouldn't have to do it. After he was done, he cleaned up all the dust and left the place cleaner than when he found it. I've had some pretty bad experiences with handymen but I feel so fortunate I found Joe on Angie's List. I'd highly recommend him.
Description of Work: He removed my sink and countertops so that I could have new countertops installed.

+ 7 moreFantastic work. Joe was punctual, hard working, easy to get along with, and very skilled. He is an absolute perfectionist. The work took about a week longer than expected, but I kept adding on additional work, and the original work was far more complex than originally anticipated because of the age of our home and the hidden "renovations" the previous owner had made. None of this phased Joe. He just made adjustments and kept working. The finished product of the closets and the basement is amazing. Looks like a new place. We will be using Joe again for any renovation work in the future.
Description of Work: We contracted Joe to update our master bedroom closets by expanding the space and adding double doors. This required him to reconstruct the front wall of the closets, frame the doors, replace the molding, and repaint. We also had Joe renovate a large portion of our basement. When we bought our row house, the basement was partially finished as a DYI project by the previous owner. The rickety basement stairs were open and not in good shape; the washer/dryer were under the stairs and completely exposed. Joe enclosed the stairs with aa half wall, which he capped with a nice wood top and enclosed the washer and dryer under the stairs with bifold doors. The ceiling in the basement, inluding the bathroom was old acoustic tile. Joe removed this, framed the brick walls and finished off the ceiling throughout the basement. Because many of the pipe valves for controlling water flow in the kitchen and outside spigots are in the ceiling, Joe added access panels in the ceiling. While doing this work, he found that the previous owner had illegally combined the dryer vent hose with the bathroom vent hose, which were piped out of the old no-longer-used bathroom window. Joe fixed this and concealed the two new hoses exiting the window with a new bathroom cabinet that completely conceals the old, painted over window. Joe then installed 1' ceramic tile throughout the basement, repainted the walls, and installed molding throughout. Finally, Joe installed two exterior lamps on our back porch, along with an outdoor electrical outlet, and installed a ceiling fan in a bedroom.

The bolt was replaced so that the door will now shut properly and the mirror was centered and hung exactly as we wanted. Joe cleaned everything up, was very professional and his price was more than reasonable. Nice guy. We will use him again and highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Needed an old bolt lock removed and replaced - bolt had been on the door for over 60 years! Also needed a very heavy mirror hung.

He ended up going over his estimate but didn't charge me for the labor on that. The other item he fixed quickly and painlessly. Overall I was very satisfied with Joe!

He works hard, is skillful and is good at solving problems This is especially useful when working on an older houuse. He is meticulous and neat and eager to have the job come out right. He comes when he says he will or calls if he will be delayed. I already have him lined up for several more jobs that didn't get on my last list.
Description of Work: Installed a handrail for the basement stairs (the old one was broken); Repaired and regrouted the tile wall and floor around a bathtub; Winterized two outside doors; Sealed drafty areas in the basement with wood and foam; Repaired three folding louvered doors; Measured and ordered two windows to replace old ones in the basement (he will install them when they arrive).

+ 1 moreIt was a good experience. I gave them a tip because the work was more than what we expected. Joe came with another person to do the work and showed up on the specified time in early morning. They were very courteous and trustworthy. One person was with me and the other one was working alone at my house but I was comfortable with that. They cleaned up after themselves before going. Joe helped me to pick up some supplies from the hardware store. I got back my money?s value. I used them as they responded quickly as soon as we sent the request. The next day they called to check whether everything was fine.
Description of Work: I used them to hang a number of art pieces on the wall and to repair the dry walls in a couple of rooms. They painted the regular walls.

He also wired in an electric light and outlet and matched the new siding to our house. Joe and his crew worked very hard and were extremely professional. Joe was very flexible and was receptive to my request to extend the concrete slab 4 feet to the outside front of the room. He kept me well informed of his progress and intentions for the day. I would highly recommend him.

Description of Work: --Install Whole House Fan-- Joe removed attic panel, widened the opening and added structural support for the fan. He then installed the fan, wired it up and installed a power switch in the hallway below.

+ 3 moreJoe estimated the work would take 3 to 4 days and ended up completing it in a little over a day and a half. He knows what he is doing, gives good and thoughtful advice, and is very personable.
Description of Work: Two sections of our front walk had become sunken and broken. I originally planned to have them broken up and hauled away and planned to replace part of the walk and along the front of the townhouse with paving stones myself. When I told Joe my plans and that we are getting the house in shape to sell within the next year, he suggested that I might want to just replace the sections that were damaged and put support under the concerete stoop to make sure it wouldn't sag, rather than going to the amount of work to remodel the entire yard. I also was concerned about our finished basement, as wainscoting which had been unprofessionally installed by the previous owners was now coming loose from the wall; I was afraid that there might be water damage and that we would have to address that as well as replacing the drywall. Joe immediately pulled a section off and reassured me that there was no water damage, and gave me a quote for removing the wainscoting and repairing the drywall that was reasonable, and that included replacing an exterior hose bib which required entering the pipes through the basement wall. When Joe came to do the work, he also did several minor repairs (spackling, etc.) that were not included in his estimate.

I contacted Joe based on the recommendations from other homeowners in the Northern Virginia area and explained what we needed done. We still own a house in Alexandria and have one room downstairs that needed replacement tile installed along with a bathroom that needed to have the caulk removed and replaced. He was able to come right out after contacting our current tenants, called me later that evening and gave me an estimate and was able to start the job two days later. This worked out fantastic because we were under a crunch with new tenants getting ready to move in and we needed the work done before the cleaning crew showed up. Joe called that evening to let me know the repairs were done and that it all looked great. Since we aren't there in the area I had to rely on his word and our current tenants as I would not be able to actually see it until a week after the work was done. He was true to his word - it looked great. I would use him again and again.
Description of Work: Install tile flooring in a room that only needed a partial area replaced and re-grout and caulk the tub.

He provided an estimate within two days and arrived about a week later to do the repairs. Joe called on the way over to begin work and brought along an assistant. Joe was mindful of keeping the house clean and making sure not to nick or scratch anything else in the house. Joe was professional, often making small suggestions for improvement (he was not selling himself) just informing me. As I am a new home owner, I found his advice very useful. Joe was polite and courteous the entire time and finished what was originally a two day job in one day. I am very pleased with the work they completed and plan to hire him again in the future for any household needs.
Description of Work: Installed a bathroom fan, caulked/cleaned newly installed windows, fixed a large hole in our carport, installed insulation in our crawlspace, and installed a new outlet in our bathroom.

He took extreme care--and made sure that his crew did likewise--to keep a tidy work area and not track debris, etc. through the house. Joe even tried to take the mop from my hand, as I was cleaning up a very minimal and expected dust mess one morning. They worked long hours to get the job done quickly, but were careful to make sure we were o.k. with a few later evenings of work.
Description of Work: Removing damaged dining room ceiling and 1/2 wall after a water pipe break. Replace the ceiling and drywall and replace and paint crown molding. Also painted most of downstairs (dining room, living room, kitchen, family room, and breakfast room).
