I chose Exterior Medics for the fact that it seemed to me that they had the most thorough proposal. They were not the cheapest but they were the most professional, willing to work with the owner to satisfy our requirement needs, and they were very flexible. I already made a down payment and there is a contract so they will be starting the work in the next couple of weeks.
Description of Work: Exterior Medics gave me a quote of $21,000 for roofing service.

Someone came out and it was obviously not the person who does the work. He was a salesman. He spent a lot of time looking at the situation, made general recommendations and went off. He said he was going to work up an estimate and we were due to receive that last week but he had an injury to his girlfriend and was in the hospital with her so that's going to have to be rescheduled. My expectation is that's going to be high. He's going to estimate a lot of work and may be all that needs to be done but anyway we are not sure how that's going to go. His professionalism was fine and punctuality was fine except for what he told us about his friend's accident was true. He was punctual, thorough and very professional. We haven't actually seen the estimate yet so we can’t tell anything for price. I'm sure he's going to recommend doing a lot more work than another provider that gave us an estimate. I don't mean to imply that all that work is unnecessary. The impression I have about them is that they are going to propose to tear off the whole roof and do something over and we might want to do that because we have insulation issues up in the attic. We have other things we are thinking of doing to the house that might fit in with that picture. At some point we will make a decision about what we are going to do and we probably would go with one of the three estimates we got. I don't have any reason to say we need to reopen the whole bidding process.

The work went fine and they matched my shingles perfectly. They cleaned up very well. Had I not spoken to their lead over the phone, I would have never known that they were at my home. My only complaint was that I had trouble coordinating their work date with my availability. I get a voicemail stating that they had an opening and let them know if I wanted it. I called back and left a voicemail stating that the suggested day would not work with my schedule. I received the next call at my office informing me that the guys were at my house working. I guess we all have issues with folks working around our homes when we are not there.
Description of Work: Replaced defective ridge ventilation, plank decking, and shingles. They also cleaned up behind themselves.

Exterior Medics inspected my house but never followed through with an estimate. I really wish I could leave a better review, but I've given them a month and a half - and reminded them at least once - without any response from the company. I scheduled someone to come out to my house to look at water damage to the soffits from overflowing gutters. The technician from Exterior Medics seemed knowledgeable and professional. He promised to email me an estimate within a few days. (Evidently, he had my email address wrong, but I was able to correct it with him in person.) He called me shortly thereafter, asking if he could make a follow-up visit to look at a few problem areas again. I responded in the affirmative. And then... nothing happened. One month passed by. I called Exterior Medics to find out what was going on. I spoke to a friendly and otherwise helpful woman, and explained to her that I was waiting for an estimate. She confirmed my contact information and promised that I would receive a phone call right away. That was two weeks ago. Still nothing. I'm sorry that I won't be doing any business with Exterior Medics.

I had a meeting on May 24th to talk about the work I needed done. They came back on May 30th and I signed a contract with them saying I needed the work done by June 3rd, they said it would not be a problem. I have paid them 1/3 the total price of the work. They emailed me on June 3rd and let me know the gable vent needed to be ordered and it would take a week in a half to get it. I never heard anything so on June 18th I emailed them asking for a start date. They replied letting me know they have yet to receive the vent and they will let me know when they get it. Ben Matthews is very professional and polite but, he has not come through with anything. I feel like they have been very disingenuous on when the work will start. After all, work started 7.19.2013, from the point of scheduling the work through completion the service was fine. The schedule and the actual installers would get an A.
Description of Work: I contracted Exterior Medics to replace an outside gable vent, install a new gable fan, caulk and seal all exterior.

The estimator climbed on the roof and took photos. He then came in and advised me that there was probably lead-based paint on the boards that were to be removed and that OSHA required special disposal of them, which would cost an additional $1000 (!) over and above the cost of the actual work on the house. The work itself was priced out at approximately $1400 even if the paint was not lead-based. He said a formal estimate would be emailed to me that day or the next, but it took a follow-up four days later for one to be produced. When the estimate arrived, it was actually over $2800. Because of what seemed to be an extraordinarily high estimate on the removal of the boards, I called OSHA the next day and was informed that that was untrue, that all the company had to do was wrap the boards in poly and take them away. He gave me his name, phone number and extension and said that, if the contractor had any problem with this information, to have him call OSHA. On 7/28, another company from Angie's List arrived. The estimate for the same work was $684, with the same type of repairs being offered by Exterior Medics. The estimator stated right up front, without any mention of lead paint by me or the appallingly high estimate I had received the day before, that the lead paint was not an issue unless they were sanding the surfaces, which they would not be doing. Needless to say, I went with the lower estimate. If the work is not performed promptly and correctly, I will post that information. At this point, however, I have no reason to believe that will be the case. Shame on this company for not only misrepresenting OSHA requirements but also overpricing by double the cost of the basic repair. Unless you have done a lot of comparison shopping, do not believe that this company is necessarily offering you a good deal on the work you want done. If this company did not want to perform this small job and was merely trying to price themselves out of the competition, it would have been so much simpler to have just said so and saved both of us a lot of time and trouble. It pays to do your homework.
Description of Work: The representative from this company arrived promptly to provide me with an estimate to remove and replace old rake boards on my small town house. I received an email a couple of days in advance and a call, reminding me of the appointment.

It's been a year so I can't but as far as I know they did a fine job. I remember I had to get a roofer out again later but I don't know if it had anything to do with them or not. For starters the introduction by both Representatives who were Estimators , was superb. However, during the inspection phase to see WHERE bats were coming from, even though it's not what Exterior Medics is known for, one of the Estimators missed two additional exit points in the front of the house (above where all Townhomes connect. He also missed a side of cladding at an angle where the townhomes connect). Still it was forgivable, because the technicians or workers they eventually sent to repair the roof, Soffit, clean the duct for the Dryer was able to see the cladding problem. The two workers completed the Cladding, Roof Vent installation and installed the Soffit material. They were NOT informed to clean the Dryer vent, and I had to call to make it clear with the initial Representatives/Estimators they're Production Manager hadn't informed them of that. When he spoke to me, he seemed bossy and when I let him know additional problem had been fixed with simply nailing the roof material to the boards, he said it would cost nothing, so I said. "So does that mean the $935.00 you quoted for repairing ALL (side cladding and part that was nailed for free) is now $300 or so, since you said the part he nailed would HAVE BEEN $600.00?" He shocked me and said I have to send an estimator there? I said WHY, since you already had photos from your worker just now and quoted me $935.00 originally! He couldn't stomach not getting that $600.00 from me. We parted ways with him. He was ridiculous also in stating the work was warranted for a year, normally. Funny, because the Representative quoted to my wife and I that it will last the life of the workmanship, that is NOT 1 year! He said to smooth things over he'd make it 5 years on the warranty. We didn't want pacification, word of mouth, arm twisters bent on a reputation from Angie's List. We also got a call from someone else later, probably to wear me down more with more talking. I just wanted proper Bat removal and repair of my home from a trusted source. We have been burned so many times. We feel the Price makers are nearly corrupt. He's just a voice on the phone, who doesn't show up at the work sight, gets photos, contradicts what he says and then comes off as street to me. I warn you, I will use the FTC, state law and whatever else I find that will make sure you aren't harassing or threatening me. I will also HOLD you to your warranty. I am disappointed in you missing those two spots because now we have to spend more money with someone else to clear that oversight up, whether it was your forte' or not. I hate to do this because the estimators and the workers who did the work were fine. It was that confusion from the middle man for pricing, that is also their production guy, well known and appreciated by others or not, that made us back off. I am giving a B in Quality because the Warranty period is not over yet. How would I know what is going to happen tomorrow. Might want to ask about Quality with anyone about 2 years later.

I scheduled service in June 2011, which had to get rescheduled a few times due to inclement weather and my travel schedule. Having said that, they honored the original Angie's List coupon deal price of $149 even though it was past the expiration date, which was great. Mark, their roofing specialist, came out to our home to inspect the roof, take digital photos of the vital exterior structures that needed work and provided a professional plan of action with recommendations on what needed to get fixed immediately vs later. The inspection included the regular maintenance of resealing around any unsealed pipe collars, exhaust fans/vents and chimney flashing. In the end, there were not any immediate things that needed to get fixed and my husband and I decided to get the recommended work done at a later date. About a year later, in August 2012, we were looking for the report to get the work done, but lost it. We contacted Exterior Medics and they were very responsive and sent us a copy of our report a few days later. They were personal, professional and didn't try the hard sell at the time of service, which I appreciated. All in all, a great experience and I would definitely use them again.

Our estimate was thorough and extremely helpful. We did not feel the need to question their diagnosis because we knew the roof was in bad shape, but we also didn't feel the need to seek a second opinion or shop around for a better price because of the attention we received during the initial meeting and estimate process. I suppose we could have found a cheaper roof, but their proposal seemed like the best route for our specific needs and concerns, and we had lots of concerns! Price was a major concern, but we were equally concerned about protecting our family's health against mold and other asthma triggers. I was also concerned about the chemicals and agents that may be used during the removal process, as our former roof was made of tar. Secondary, but still a priority: ensuring the architectural integrity of our home. We have a mid-century modern home, with unique and tricky angles that really make the design interesting and worthy of TLC. The technician that assessed our roof and talked us through next steps was sensitive to this and helped us understand how their service would complement the original design, but not overshadow it. We asked lots of questions and we received thorough answers to each over what was actually a very pleasant and informative conversation. Through out the initial meeting, all of our questions were answered, and at no time did we feel as if we were being pushed to close the deal. We discussed the estimate overnight, and decided to go ahead with the purchase. We set a start date and talked through a few final details ( I requested no smoking on the property, we talked through how materials would be stored, parking, how to prep our home, etc.) and on the morning we set as the start date, the trucks pulled up right when they said they would. The technicians were all friendly and energetic, and I was immediately at ease with the entire team. Upon completion, we were invited to the roof to view and discuss the project - to ask any questions and talk through any surprises. I was especially grateful to see the technicians comb my yard thoroughly, multiple times, for any nails or debris. I'd like to think they were being cautious because I have a small child, but I bet they are always this cautious and courteous. This company seems to really get it - big investments are scary, especially when there's so much at stake - so their demeanor and personal attention made a big difference on a personal level. As for the roof, its beautiful and strong, and we've noticed a measurable difference in air quality and temperature regulation. We have other (smaller) plans for updating our home, so we will be return customers, absolutely.

They did an excellent job. They were very good. They were very detailed. They did photographs of the roof including all sides and all angles and downloaded it to their computer so they could show me. It was in deplorable condition. I kind of knew it because of the leaks. They were very prompt. They did it in two parts with the supplier delivering the shingles and then the worker bees come in to do the work. The shingles were very, very snowy looking and they were not the right color which the foreman noticed. They exchanged the shingles which only delayed it a few days. They did everything they said. The cleanup was impeccable. The color is perfect and blends in perfectly in the community. The warranty on the roof is transferable one time. I got a $200 discount for the roof. They were only $80 higher than another company and I got more for my money. They were very polite, courteous and patient because I talk a lot and I wanted to be sure I understood everything.

I had a detailed, very professional estimate the following morning via email. However, I was reluctant to approve the estimate at first, since the $1100 price seemed a bit high, though they did offer a 5 percent Angies List discount. However, since I do not live in the state where the townhouse is, and do not have the skills to replace the rake board aluminum cladding, I did agree. The work was completed by yet another project manager named Boris and his team within 5 days after approval. They did 2 coats of paint on the shutters, picked up the approved paint at a McCormick's store so that I could be sure it was the one the HOA had approved, and were very diligent about all their prep and cleanup work. However, once the shutters were painted, I realized the door would now need to be painted to match. Since I was back home in another state, I asked for an estimate to paint just the outside of the front door, which is steel, and which I have personally painted myself 4 times. The estimate was high- but I have since discovered that there was a misunderstanding over the scope of the work I was requesting. UPDATE: Let me just tell you that what happened after this note was posted has completely changed my mind about these guys. Mark, one of the owners, called me to apologize for the misunderstanding on the door estimate, and offered to paint the door FOR FREE to make it right. I was already planning to do the job myself, so I asked if they would be willing to replace a couple of shutters on another rental home. I ordered new shutters- and though they turned out not to be the correct size, Boris sent his team over THREE TIMES to try to complete the job- at no cost to me. Then they sent me a lovely note and cookies!! Mark must surely be one of the best businessmen I have encountered in a very long time, and I will not hesitate to use him and his crew again.
Description of Work: I have a 3-story rental townhouse that needed shutters repainted and a piece of roofing trim -rake board- replaced with aluminum cladding requiring custom-bending and installation. I had only until April 15 to complete the work which was in a different state from where I live and required someone going up to the 3rd level on a ladder to paint- which I did not feel I could safely do.
