He was on time, gave me a good price and little chatty. He took his truck to lower and got the vent pipes etc. the work was about two hours, he charges by the job but wants hundred dollars more. He suggested two or three tasks if small, but it sounded good to me.

I contacted two handyman services from your list. I made my selection based on the price and the owner's ability to do the work right away. There was some back and forth (on my part) because I couldn't decide which light fixtures to purchase. I delayed the work even longer because I wanted to try the dust to dawn screw in equipment rather than have an electrician replace the existing fixtures. We decided after a few days to have the fixtures replaced because we really wanted more light in the back of the house, so I called the owner and we scheduled a time to do the work. Mr. Birch arrived on time and replaced both light fixtures, as requested. I am very pleased with the lights. Thank you for providing this service. It saved me a lot of time trying to locate the right electrician.
Description of Work: Light fixtures in the back of the house were removed and replaced with motion sensor lights (flood light and regular light fixture).

I was not there when the job was done. I came home from work anxious to check on the end result. Bob did a nice job hanging the door and took the old door and hardware with him. I appreciate that. The shower fixtures looked good. They were new. However, the washer and dryer are in the bathroom and there was a large scratch on top of the washing machine. I assume that's where he placed his tool box. Yesterday I got a call from our new tenants. After taking his first shower my tenant told me that water was leaking into the living room which backs up to the bathroom. Apparently Bob did not assemble the hardware properly after replacing the new fixtures. Thankfully our new tenant is a plumber and he was able to solder the pipes and repair this fiasco himself. Hallelujah! In the kitchen where Bob installed a new faucet there were scratches in the stainless steel sink. There were also shards of tiny metal pieces all over the counter top. Bc this is a rental house I could overlook these sloppy repairs. But when I got a call about the plumbing I had to write a review. On top of all that, I paid for this service. That's why I rated the price an "F."
Description of Work: Initially I met with Bob Birch for an estimate. Bc he has such good reviews on Angie's list, I trusted he knew what he was doing. I had a door at our rental property that needed to be hung and some other jobs. I had new fixtures for the kitchen and shower to be installed.

Response from Resident Handyman
I'm sorry this member is dissatisfied with my services. I was unaware of any of these issues until this member reported to the list. I have been called back a few times in the past 30 years to remedy various situations. If only this client called me first before posting this report the grades would probably have been different.
Our overall experience with Bob was outstanding. He was very professional, friendly, responsive, accommodating, and obviously very skilled and produces quality work. He cleaned up all the mess and left things spotless. I would highly recommend Bob to do any handyman task.
Description of Work: Bob Birch installed and painted chair molding and framed decorative boxes as part of the overall molding design. He did this for our entire main floor and it looks awesome. It really provides an upscale look to the home. He also converted an area underneath the stairs in the basement to a functional closet. He installed a folding ladder in the garage to the attic and installed flooring fo the attic as well.

Contacted Resident Handyman on 10/31/11 to have a window leak inspected and repaired. Mr. Birch asked for my contact information and said that he would give me a call by Wednesday to set up an appointment. It is 9:00 a.m. Friday morning, and I have received no contact at all. I realize that we are all busy, but I do not make statements that I can't honor. I will not be using this service, and will locate another provider.

Bob was quick to respond to request for bids. He did good work and Carolyn (his wife) did painting and finishing work. What started as a 2 bathroom project expanded to the basement as I discovered they were high quality and fair in pricing, plus they work through the unexpected issues that arise with any remodeling (hey! there is tile underneath the tile!). Work progressed quickly, they cleaned up, they were professional at all times. I'm glad they are done - I have a MUCH nicer home now, but I will miss working with them. My highest compliment, will have them back in Spring for tax refund projects.
Description of Work: Remodeled master bathroom - tear out old shower, install enclosure, repair tile, install green board, paint. Remodeled half bathroom - replace sink, replace mirror, repair drywall, pain. Repair drywall - kitchen ceiling and paint. Basement - drywall (replaced from flood damage) and paint.

Bob came for an estimate for which there was no charge. He gave me an honest assessment of whether my "wish list" was practical and how much extra it would entail, and didn't try to sell me on the bigger job. So it wound up being a relatively small job, and I had to cancel once, but he rescheduled for another day at my convenience, arrived on time, and completed the job quickly. Left no mess behind. When I called a while later because I was having problems with my kitchen lights, he returned the call promptly and diagnosed the issue over the phone. He was pleasant and accommodating, and I will call him the next time I need a handyman.
Description of Work: Installed a hanging light fixture and an eyeball fixture in living room.
Bob was always prompt and communication was great. He was willing to adjust the plan as we went, and still produced an absolutely beautiful kitchen. Wish I could post pictures! Only reason it's not all A's is a couple leaks with the sink and dishwasher that were not caught with the install. That being said, Bob showed up late on Friday night to make things right. Absolutely recommend to anyone interested in great work at a great price.
Description of Work: Prompt and courteous. Great suggestions for the little problems that cropped up. Overall, we're thrilled with our new kitchen layout. Raised the counters, shifted counters around, installed ceramic tile under new refrigerator location, did electrical work for lights, outlet in counters and microwave, repainted the walls.

Very competitive estimate for labor (material expense was at actual cost). Some growth in material cost, but that was a function of discovering additional rotten wood as pieces were removed. Labor was held at the estimated cost. Very satisfied with the entire experience. Would engage this firm again for future work.

Over the phone he told me $250 for everything. So when he first put the water diverter in he put it upside down so when u turned the water on it came out the shower head only and not out the tube spout. So he messed up so he had to take it apart and flip it. Now when u turn the water on most of it comes out the tube spout but still drips allot out the shower head without pulling up the shower plug. He told me he never seen anything like it before. Didn't have much a clue how to fix it. So now when i turn water on it comes out tube spout and shower head... Its only suppose to come out shower head when you pull shower plug. Thats why i hired someone because i didnt know how to do it but guess im not the only one... Well he was suppose to sheet rock the wall back and he did but before he started he went outside and got his sheet rock mud pan and the smearer. It had old dried up mud in it. He took it to my kitchen sink and started cleaning it out. Well he cleaned his pan out in my sink, but didnt clean my sink out. left dried up sheet rock mud all in my sink and on my granite counter tops. I Had to clean it out and wipe down my kitchen. Very unprofessional. Well not trying to be mean i just wasnt happy with it. Shower doesnt work right like its suppose to , he cleaned his dirty pan out in my kitchen sink and didnt clean up after and on top of it all he charged me extra $45 for parts. I bought the fixtures and all that at lowes myself for $275. He only bought 8ft 1/2 pipe and 2 shut off valves he says for $45. It only took him 2 hours because he didnt know how to install it. So i paid him $125 an hour for 2 hours to install something that doesnt work fully right he really didnt know how to install correctly. I could of got a well established company with two man crew who would of done it right and not washed there dirty mud pan in my kitchen sink for the same price...
Description of Work: I hired him to install New shower fixtures and piping and water diverter. He cut sheet rock to get to existing piping and water diverter. Put in new piping and water diverter and put sheet rock back.

Bob returned my call very quickly. Phone is the best way to reach him. Since he has worked on our house before, we discussed the type of toilet I needed to get, and if he had installed this kind of shower stall before (Swanstone, and ,yes, he's done them before). We set a tentative date based on when my order would come in, and when he might be close to my area, Lakeridge. He comes up from the south, and can dovetail different jobs. The first day Bob and Carolyn came, they basically demolished the old bathroom, and I mean old. Took out the shower, toilet, sink and pried up the old tile with a crowbar. Because the sub floor was so old, he replaced it. The next day, he started putting in the shower and finishing up the floor. Carolyn worked on painting the subfloor and finishing the drywall. She loaned me some solution to get the rest of the wallpaper off. It worked really well. The third day they finished up the shower, which was a bit of a bear because our two by fours are actually two by threes, but Bob worked around it. He installed the shower and recessed shelf perfectly, and this bathroom is not square. They took down the cabinets for me so I could more easily take the wallpaper off and paint. They installed the new toilet and vanity. After the weekend, they came back to finish the drywall and do the molding on the floor and put in the toilet paper holder and hand the cabinets again. We agreed on ready to paint status for the bathroom, and all I had to do was a little sanding. The bathroom looks great. Since I went with another company for the shower door, which included installation, Bob didn't have to put up a door, and so he took $150 off the agreed price, which evened out for the supplies he had to pick up for the installation: two by fours, drywall mud, primer, drywall. The total was $1500, I bought all the fixtures that I wanted, Bob picked them up for me. He and Carolyn are the best, communicate well, very helpful with advice, and just roll with the punches when things get tricky. They have now done my kitchen, two bathrooms and have repaired drywall twice. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Removal of old shower, toilet, sink, old tile flooring. New sub floor installed, Swanstone shower stall installed, damaged drywall fixed and adjusted to new shower. Vinyl square flooring installed, molding installed on floor (white primed). New toilet installed, new vanity, shower faucet. Drywall patched and sanded to ready to paint status, as we requested. They took down the cabinets and replaced them after I painted that wall. Installed a toilet paper holder and the faucet for the new vanity. Hauled away the old fixtures. Picked up heavy items at Home Depot after I paid for them (as we requested). Great job, this is the fourth time Bob and Carolyn have been out to our house.

We had already taped off everything. They just came in and did the painting itself. It took them three days to complete the job. It is a "mom and pop" type business. There are two workers. They are husband and wife. They come out and do it all. They showed up when they said they would. The quality of work was good. It wasn't perfect. Painting is not their primary occupation, but they claim to do it all. We were happy enough with the work. It looks good. It is a lot better than what we would have done. They were quick to come out.

Bob came to our home, gave us an estimate, 2 days later did a 2-1/2 day job in less than 2 days! He was fast, efficient and his work was simply amazing! During the installation, the closets I purchased were shorter than my actual closet size. Bob was able to fix the problem without any issues. His painting was even cleaner and more detailed than the paint contractors we hired in the past! Bob also went beyond duty. I have a 19 yr old lab who decided to befriend Bob. Bob called to let me know "Bo" wanted in the house and my cat, Lucy, wanted out, was this ok? Of course, Bo & Lucy come/go freely and this was fine with me. Bob not only let my pets enjoy themselves, but he even let Bo out when he needed to go. I would HIGHLY recommend Bob's services. His work is amazing, he's very knowledgable about projects, even offering a less expensive alternatives. His personality is friendly & easy going, his price is more than reasonable (less than other handymen in our area) & most importantly, he's trustworthy!

Bob came by right after the big snowstorm we had at the beginning of the year and installed a new front door for my house. He reused a few materials I had on hand to save me money. He was very honest when I showed him some little projects I had around the house. He let me know which ones I could complete myself and wouldn't need to hire outside help for. I don't think many people would do that. I am very satisfied with his work.

Recommended by a friend of mine for whom Mr. Birch did some sheetrock work. Answered my call, came the same week for an estimate, came the next week and completed the job in one day. Tidy
Description of Work: Repaired broken cabinet drawers.
Bob Birch & his wife are quite the team! Not only did they do the sheetrocking, finishing, and painting, but they also had to create a bulkhead down the hall due to plumbing and relocate some ceiling fixtures. They did those at no charge. The quality of their work is nothing short of outstanding. They are both personable, capable, and I had no qualms about them being in my house while I ran errands. Just very decent and hard-working people, plus they played with my demanding dog during their breaks. I definitely would use them again. My husband and I have tried to do most of the remodelling work on our home but we are now rethinking some of the projects and will definitely use Resident Handyman again. OUTSTANDING in every aspect! Initially, we reviewed all the quotes in August 2010 and, even though prices were essentially the same and one price was lower, we just had a confident feel about Resident Handyman. We called them to see if they could start work late Sept & agreed on a start date. I met them at Lowe's to purchase the sheetrock (I like to get all the points possible on my credit card!) and then back to the house to review all the work. The previous owner's work was not exactly plumb and there were several instances where Bob had to reconfigure measurements because walls/ceilings were not straight. He and Caroline worked continuously and if he ran into a problem, he would discuss options with me rather than cover it up with a cosmetic fix and me none the wiser. They completed the sheet rock work, the finishing, painting, etc. and even painted the unfinished 6" or so at the top of the walls that the drop ceiling had hidden (Thank goodness we still had the leftover paint from that job). Because materials cost less than anticipated, I decided to have crown molding installed which they completed at a very, very minimal price! The basement is now truly just a lower living level, it has totally lost the 'basement' feel. The work they did is beautiful! p.s. I have never bothered to actually write a review on Angie's list because the limited work I have had done in the past has been ho-hum and not worth taking my time to do a review. Bob & Caroline Birch, dba Resident Handyman, are the exception.
Description of Work: My husband removed the old dropped ceiling from our walk-out basement & we obtained quotes from several vendors to install a sheetrock ceiling as well as do the finish work & painting. Although most of the quotes were similar in price, we decided on Resident Handyman due to the reviews on Angie's List.

I needed to do an "emergency" bathroom remodeling, and ended up having to piecemeal it with 11 different contractors. Bob agreed to be my drywall contractor who agreed to come up on a Saturday to get the drywall done and the first coat of drywall mud on the walls. That allowed my painter to come in on Sunday before the tile guys on Monday. He and his wife called ahead to let me know of their timing. They arrived on time and worked diligently and professionally to get the job done, and he didn't bat an eye when I asked if he could hang the 2 cabinets for me. I think the price was fair, especially for a last-minute Saturday job (I called him on Thursday). I would use them again for handyman type services.

Resident Handyman, Bob Birch, was always available to take my calls or return my calls promptly. This was great as several other places I had called never called me back. Several months before, I had removed the toilet and vanity in my powder room but had never gotten around to picking out new fixtures or finding someone to complete the job. Resident Handyman to the rescue! They finished my small powder room, which included picking up the toilet, vanity and a few miscellaneous pieces (light fixtures, etc) at Lowe's and installing the pieces. It's a very small space, so I really don't know how they did it. They also hung an old mirror over the vanity and wallpapered one of the walls. Everything looks great and I'm very satisfied with the results. I kept thinking of more things that I wanted finished, so asked them to extend my bamboo flooring into the hallway (he removed carpet and laid bamboo). Also had him replace the carpeted ledge near the stairway with bamboo. They also fixed an outdoor faucet, weatherstripped my front and back doors, installed a showerhead and several towel racks. They were punctual, neat and very easy to work with. Everything was completed in a day and a half.
