I am extremely dissatisfied with Merryman's Heating & Air Conditioning. I gave him a deposit some time before I actually decided what system to install, as I had first thought I was going to start the project sooner than I did and use only a heat pump system. When I finally was ready to start, I nearly asked for my funds back and went with another HVAC contractor, but the general contractor I hired to do the job thought that since Merryman already had my deposit and seemed to be a "good Christian man", we should let him do the work, so I agreed to go with his choice. It took a lot of phone calls to finally get him to install the systems or to give us a date and time he could actually install the system. It seems he prefers to work on a spontaneous schedule at his convenience and come when he fits you in, rather than by a set appointment, which clearly does not work for me. He ultimately did install a heat pump system on the upper level and a mini-split system on the main level, receiving multiple payments and when he made a change to the order, never gave me a change order NOR did he ever give me a written contract even though between my general contractor, co-worker and myself had asked him at least 10 times or more to provide one. To this date, I have not received any registration paperwork for the units. The only thing that was left for me was four booklets on the mini-split system. By the time he finally gave me the contract, it was dated September 8, 2014, at the end of the project. Up until that time, it was just invoices as the work was being completed...even those I had to insist on receiving in writing prior to giving his office personnel my credit card information. He has terrible communication skills. A seemingly nice man, but quiet and rarely willing to pick up phone and let you know when he will be able to do his job.
He installed the systems a few months prior to the completion of the renovation and the general contractor had not been running the air conditioners, only the fans, so it went unnoticed that they were not cooling. Near the end of the renovation it was noticed that the mini-splits were not working and Merryman's was called out. He said there was a small hole in the line and that the refrigerant leaked out so he had to recharge the unit to the cost of $1200, which quite honestly seemed extreme!!! He believed the siding guy had broken the line installing the siding. However, once fixed, it soon quit working again, truly making me wonder if this was at all factual. If that was the problem, then why didn't that repair fix the issue???
Once we got all the work completed, staging in, and house formally on the market, I noticed that one of the units was profusely dripping water down the wall Fortunately, that was on a Sunday during one of our first open houses (had it been during the week and I was not there to notice it, water would have severely damaged the wood floor in the dining room recently redone). I called him and he came over soon after and told me that the machines were clogged with dust and that is why one was leaking, He did clean them all while there, but actually only one was leaking. He did not charge for that visit. At that point, I felt it was my general contractor's fault for running the fans while sanding and working in the house. However, while they were all very dusty and clearly should not have been run while sanding in the house, I have since found out that the condensation line was not installed properly and that is actually what caused the machine to leak down the wall. There were four machines, all dusty, yet only one was dripping and after months of headaches, I now know that it was not the dust but the improper installation of the condensation drain as shown to me by the contractors that fixed the system recently.
Winter came and the mini-splits were not heating. He came by again and told us the valve was bad and ordered a valve and replaced it. Soon after it did not work again. The list of issues is so many, that I truly cannot remember all the reasons he gave, loose valves, bad valves, dirty filters, low refrigerant from a leaking line, the list goes on and on. Time frames may be a little off, but the facts of the constant breaking down of the system and his constant assurance that it was repaired are accurate.
Please note that this house was on the market for sale and about a 45 minute drive from my personal residence. We had to check the house regularly and keep an electric heater running in the basement out of concern for possible broken water pipes in case the units quit working again. Even though there was a working system on the upper level, we had such a cold winter that we could not count on the upper level unit keeping the main level pipes from breaking.
Then came Spring and again, the AC would not work. We called him again, texted him, etc. He went and looked at it again and said it was a loose valve and said he repaired it and that it was fixed. The next open house, we discovered it did not work again. We had suggested getting a manufacturer's rep to come and be sure it was installed properly, but he avoided that. He instructed us to pull the plug from the outside wall and re-plug it so it would reset. (By the way, when you do this, it erases all error codes previous so there is no way to see what went wrong). We called, texted and requested he set an appointment to come out and meet us but he avoided doing anything and told us he could not make it out for at least two weeks and since his warranty on labor was up, we could get someone else to do the work. Someone was finally making an offer on the home and I had to get the AC fixed quickly, figuring I'd battle it out with him after I found out exactly what was wrong with the system. Hence, I called a reputable company and the one I wished I would have hired to begin with, A-Advantage out of Manassas, VA and they quickly gave me an appointment time and came out to check the system. At first they thought it was a valve as in fact, a valve had gone bad again. Still, even after changing the valve, the system did not work. Jaycin and Tom were scratching their heads thinking a line was clogged in the wall or somewhere. After taking a short break, Jaycin decided to dig further into the issue and finally found what was wrong. Merryman's Heating & Air Conditioning had left a small plastic protector piece in the adaptor that was to be removed upon installation. This adapter connects to the line and ultimately the plastic piece was blocking air from entering the unit. Once they removed the protector piece of plastic, the machine worked great and continued to work great. Funny how when you do something right it works! A-Advantage also discovered that Merrymans' had improperly installed the condensation lines by having them going down, then up-hill so that water could never escape and the Daikon rep told me that when the condensation lines are not installed properly, it will cause water to leak down the wall. This was the issue with the condensation line and NOT just the dirty filters.
I've asked Mr. Merryman to refund the money that I paid A-Advantage to make repairs that had to be done to correct his faulty work and the amount he charged me for what he said was a leaking line that I don't feel was the problem, since it didn't fix anything for m
"We sent Ms. [removed member name] an estimate for this job in December of 2013. The job passed inspection October 8th.The initial job was finished and while we will agree with Ms. [removed member name] that a valve was stuck; we did replace it. We have given her a year warranty on all our labor (through October 2014), BUT Ms. [removed member name] took it upon herself to hire another company during this period. We will not guarantee our work IF another company comes in behind us and makes changes. Our permit # for this job is: [removed member info]. If there had been a problem at that time the inspection would not have passed. That is why there are inspections in place. To protect Home and Business owners from this type of fraud. The only time she was charged an extra fee was when the siding people she hired came out and destroyed the line. She was supposed to have been reimbursed by that company. We have always maintained an A rating we take all reviews serious and we do not like to have a complaint leveled against us.We regret that Ms, [removed member name] feels she needs to complain .and as we stated above she had someone else come out when she could have called us for to come out for FREE. . Now she wants us to pay for something that we did not go out and observe . Our suggestion to Ms. [removed member name] is to keep the new HVAC Company since she is happy with them."
"Thank you for the response. Customers like you are a joy to work for."
