I am on a yearly contract with them. I haven't had any problem with them. They just automatically come out. I have never had to call them.
Description of Work: They come periodically to check the heating and air conditioning unit. They put new filters in.

When I got home from work yesterday, my furnace was not working. I called my home warranty company and placed a claim. This morning I still had heard nothing from the heating company, so I called again. Their local service provider couldn't get to us until tomorrow - more than 36 hours later. So, I called Barnes Heating and Cooling about 9:00 AM this morning and they came before noon, replaced the igniter and I now have heat!!! The lady that took my call was very nice, as was the repairman. The price was steep but for emergency service, its probably the going rate. I have cancelled my home warranty with Cross Country Home Services. Don't ever buy their coverage!
Description of Work: Replaced the igniter in my gas furnace.

They were there when they promised and did a wonderful job. My home in Colonial Heights has a 2 1/2 ton and a 3 ton unit, dual fuel. It was around $16,000, but reduced my bills by about $300. I will be using them in the future 4 heat pumps in a year and a half. They will be installing another unit next Friday in Prince George. Highly recommend them!
Description of Work: I have had 4 heat pumps put in at my properties in the last year and a half. The last was a couple of months ago and next Friday they are putting in a unit in Prince George. The put 2 dual fuel heat pumps in my Colonial Heights house. I can't believe anyone gave this company a poor rating. The owner is very professional he came to my house to show me the units available and discuss pricing. I got 3 other estimates. Will use the company in the future!

Brought this company in to install new Trane HVAC systems. Paid a master electrician to be onsite the first day of the job and share with the HVAC company owner the very specific need for UF (underground feed) wiring between the attic-mounted air handler and the heat pump on the ground outside below. We knew the electrical inspector would be looking for UF wire. Our generator installation a few months earlier had failed first inspection for exactly that reason. The inspector referred to a clearly-stated requirement in NFPA 70 not only specifying the use of UF cable in wet locations but also precluding the use of NM cabling in those areas. (NFPA 70 334.12 (B)(4) and NFPA 70 310.08 (B) and (C). The company owner acknowledged the need for UF cabling and assured our electrician that it would be handled. Very talented installers. We gathered them around the table each of the three days they were here and made sure they had a decent lunch. Great bunch of humans - took great pride in their work. I was happy to see the inspector when he showed up at the completion of the job as we knew we had done all we could to be in compliance. At the end of his visit, the inspector presented me with a print-out of his findings and said "You failed these two items - call me when you're ready for re-inspection." Turns out the inspector spotted a 40 amp breaker left in the panel where a 25 amp breaker should have been. Then I saw the second item on the list. "Wire installed in gutter outside is not rated for a wet location." yes - read that again.... "Wire installed in gutter outside is not rated for a wet location." We had failed inspection for the EXACT item we'd been very specific about. Despite information having been provided by a licensed professional, the job failed inspection because that very specific information was disregarded. The corrections were made - by the previously-mentioned master electrician - and reimbursed by the company in question. It seemed reasonable to believe that our job had been thrown under the bus. There were a limited number of possible explanations here: (1) The HVAC company in question didn't know what they were doing and/or possibly weren't familiar with code requirements in their industry (2) The HVAC company in question had successfully disregarded said code on hundreds of other jobs and had never been called on it) or; (3) The HVAC company in question chose to disregard both local and national code requirements as well as specific guidance provided by the customer and the customer's electrician. "Just use what we have on the truck - the inspector will never notice." That could be called a calculated risk. The equipment works well and, while we were sure that the installation was done correctly, we brought in a different HVAC company to tell us if we were going to have any other surprises. After the job was done (and before our findings gave us any reason to believe that it would be futile to do so) we requested in writing an opportunity to discuss with the company owner some ductwork modifications on the air handler in the attic. Receipt of the correspondence was acknowledged by the office staff. No response - ever.

They did not do any diagnostics but treated a symptom. It was like giving an asprin to someone with a brain tumor. Our next technician was so thourough that they found a disconnected air duct in the crawl space.
Description of Work: called for service and diagnostics on why a/c system was not cooling. our direction to barnes was to advise us if we were better off replacing our 14 year old system or serving it. they put 2 pounds of freon in it and gave no indications of needing to replace our unit. 10 days later it stopped cooling again. I got a very snide receptionist who defended the technician indicating I did not ask for a leak test. I demanded that I talk to the technician that did the service but she said he was in the field and would not be back until Monday. Monday came and went without a call from the technician. Or ever for that matter. They would not guarantee thier service. Needless to say, I went to another technician to assess our system. It had very obvious leaks that could be detected with a simple water bottle spray test. I replaced our unit. Barnes will do sequential maintenance to suck you dry.

Appointment was made for next day. The technician called to let us know that he was on his way. He was on time. He was professional. My husband was impressed with his knowledge, as he was much more thorough than technicians from other companies that we had employed in the past. We will definitely use this company in the future for our Heating and AC issues.

Job was done right but very unprofessional, did not even have time to explain what the problem was, what was to be changed and waht the cost was. He just went and checked , remove the broken part and charged me , no explanation coming from him, I have to ask him myself to satisfy my curiosity about the problem, a bad experience.

They showed up on time daily at 7:30 AM and left around 3:30-4:00 PM everyday. The job took 4 days to complete with 2-3 workers per day. The workers were friendly and professional. However, it was not discovered until November/December (when the weather started getting cold) that they forgot to turn on the gas to the furnace and did not add the pipe connecting the pump to remove moisture from the furnace. We called on a Saturday morning about the gas heat not working and had a call back within 15 minutes from the on call tech who walked us through how to turn the gas on over the phone. We called on a Monday/Tuesday about moisture accumulating near the furnace and did not have a tech come by until Thursday when it was discovered the pipe connecting the moisture pump was never connected to the furnace. He was able to correct within 45 minutes. Overall, we are happy with the company and product, but a little worried with the two "oops" they left behind for us to discover 3 months later, but they were quick to respond once it was brought to their attention.

Very satisfied.
Description of Work: 1. Bought heat pump (May 2000,residential) and AC (2005,business in Hopewell) systems from Barnes. Both systems are Trane and have performed very reliably. 2. Service calls have been responsive and effective. Last (May 2010) was in last month of residential warranty and a major component was replaced at no charge. 3. Highly recommended.

The two workmen who actually did the installation were pleasant, professional and very knowledgeable. They arrived on time as promised, communicated what they were doing the whole time and cleaned up everything and even replaced the small door that leads into the crawl space where the heating unit is installed. Overall, a thoroughly pleasant and painless experience. I highly recommend this company if you have heating or A/C work to be done.
Description of Work: Our old air conditioner was ready to bite the dust (couldn't be recharged), so we solicited bids to replace the entire system - heat pump and backup Apollo hot water heat unit. The estimator was thoroughly familiar with the types of equipment needed (other bidders were not) and he provided two options for our consideration. We made a decision and the work was scheduled and completed within a week.

They are prompt and courteous and also very fair in terms of pricing. I would definitely recommend their service to others in the area. They are reliable and honest people.
