We had an absolutely fantastic experience working with SunCrest Builders. ESTIMATE: We were on a tight budget and SunCrest Builders was the first company we have contacted in regard to some remodeling work on our first house. John Cantrall, the owner, came out for an estimate. At the time we had very little idea of what we wanted and how much things cost. John was very efficient and methodical during the estimate and provided us with truly brilliant suggestions. You can really tell he knows a thing or two about interior design. His idea of putting in a kitchen peninsula, as well as, painting the stairs white were brilliant. We?re glad we went with his advice. Over the course of about another two weeks John worked with us to tailor the scope of the work to our needs. One nice thing about John?s estimates is that they?re very detailed and you can easily tell what?s driving the cost. The initial scope was expensive for us and we asked John to take some things out and provide another estimate. That estimate was a little closer to our budget, but we decided to adjust a little more and as a result John provided us with the third and final estimate. This was a gradual process, but in the end we ended up with something that meets our budget and satisfies majority of our needs. As a side note, we had two other estimates with other companies. One company did not provide us with an estimate, other than a lump sump amount. We had no clue to what was driving the cost. When we asked for a detailed estimate, they got back to us a week later with another lump sump number - just a little lower to woo us in, we presume. We really appreciated John?s detailed estimate after that experience. The other company is also highly rated here on AngiesList and the price was close to SunCrest?s. However, we decided to go with SunCrest, because John?s estimates were a lot less stingy on certain points. For example, we needed to have a piece of drywall repaired in the living room. John included a complete repaint of the living room with two coats of paint. The other company was only going to paint over the area they ?touched? and with only one coat of paint. Another thing to add, is that of the three companies that gave us an estimate, John?s was the only one that promised to be done in a week. The other two needed two weeks. WORKSMANSHIP: The quality of the work that John and his team have produced made us very happy. The work began very quickly. We came home every night to check on the progress and were very impressed with some details. For example, every single day John?s crew cleaned up after themselves and made sure that everything was left neatly. We could really tell they took great care in making sure they don?t brake anything or spill paint on the carpet, etc. Bryan, the manager, was very accessible by phone and made sure he answered any/all questions we had throughout the process. The rest of the guys that worked on our house we could tell were true craftsmen. Whoever worked on our stairs must be a magician for he has really pulled out a hat trick. We had carpet on our stairs and in preparations of putting in new floors, John suggested we remove the carpet and paint the stairs white. It turned out there must have been what seemed to be a zillion staples in there. There were staple holes all over the place. The wood itself was far worse than that beautiful solid oak we fantasized about - in that case we would have polished it. We were worried. We thought the only possible (and aesthetically pleasing) solution was to put the carpet back. Well, once the staples were all out (it probably must have taken them hours to take them out), the carpenter was able to fill all the staple holes and repair any areas that needed repair. Once all that was done, they applied paint and it look now looks like a million bucks. We would have never thought it could look this good after seeing all the staples. One of the other major things that John?s team did was a partial removal of Kitchen/DR wall. We asked them to ready the knee wall for granite bar ledge installation. One of the complications that came up was that the wall ended up being a load-bearing wall. We were worried that this was going to put us over the top of our budget, but in the end John did not charge us a penny for putting in the support beams. We were also wondering exactly how much support the walls would need. John reassured us that he wouldn?t do a thing without first consulting a civil engineer. As promised, he provided us with an engineer drawing and put in the supports that were deemed necessary by the engineer. This really put us at peace. The knee wall, by the way, looks great and we can?t wait until the granite is installed - by the way John and Bryan went out of their way to find and install the granite supports that we wanted. We just signed a contract with the granite company and the owner complemented us on the granite supports and how nice, sturdy and low-profile they?re. The other things were also expertly done. Tim did a great job building a kitchen peninsula out of IKEA cabinets we had purchased. All the drywall and painting was also masterfully done. SUMMARY: We didn?t know what to expect given this is our first house. We were pleased with John and his team and in the end feel that we made a solid decision to go with SunCrest Builders. We?re certainly going to consider doing future business with them and we highly recommend them. They really went out of their way to make us feel satisfied. All the work performed was top-notch and very well managed. They managed to complete the project on time and within our budget. It is difficult to summarize, but given our small budget we really thought we were getting a Buick, but instead got a Cadillac. This is a gem of a company. John & Company - keep up the good work! Thank you guys.

Overall the process went very well. I would definitely recommed John and Suncrest - as a matter of fact we already have. Very close friends of ours living in a similar duplex in our neighborhood are just now starting their addition and are working with Suncrest, so we really do recommend working with John. When we first started exploring putting on an addition, we had at least 8 different companies come to our house to take a look at our plans. From the very start John stood out above the rest. He was the first one to really take it seriously, pull out a flashlight and start poking around the house. He also took our budget seriously and from the very begining helped us keep to our budget constraints. The design phase was very fun - he had great ideas and took our graph paper sketches and made them work. We worked together to get the price down to our max (I gave a little - no new windows on the existing house, no half bath on the main floor - and he gave a little by negotiating down to what we could sign on for). One major reason we are so willing to recommend him is that he did not once throughout the entire process nickle and dime us. We made one change to the HVAC plan, which was clearly an enhancement and new scope, which we paid more for, but other than that we only paid him for what we had originally signed on for. There were the usual headaches and hiccups throughout the process - it was a big project and those were expected - but every single time he was responsive, cleared up or corrected any issues, and did a very good job of not showing any irritation with the crazy homeowner I fear I became from time to time. He was professional throughout. Another reason we would refer John and Suncrest builders is due to the quality of the workmanship. Especially with the tile. Mauricio was superb! He absolutely took his time, and it was the one instance I didn't even blink at a schedule slip. He carefully planned the layout of each tile and made sure the variations in the stone tiles were balanced, the grout lines are like slivers and completely uniform. It is beautiful and I never expected that level of expertise. Everytime they would complete another step in the process, I had that same feeling of surprise. Every step surpassed our expections. The final big positive for John and his team is the ownership they took in the final product. Not only did he not nickle and dime us, but he also initiated things that probably qualified as scope-creep in order to ensure he was walking away from a house that felt whole, not an old duplex with a new box on the back. For example, they pulled up the existing wood floor in the landing and put down the same new hardwood floor throughout the hallway and landing. They could have just put a threshold in and only put new floor in the hallway, but that would have clearly delineated the new from the old and without question (or a pricetag) they did the entire space. Also, they were going to paint all of the upstairs and the old dining space downstairs because those walls were affected by the build. They went ahead and painted the whole house (walls, trim, everything) to match including the living room which was not part of the project, so the transition downstairs from the old to new is seamless. It made an enormous difference to the flow of the house. Finally, there was some minor damage to the existing hardwood floors in the old dining area that needed to be fixed. Instead of just fixing that section of the floor, they refinished the hardwood floors on the entire main level. I felt like the Suncrest team was invested in leaving behind a quality product. John made decisions driven by his desire to make us completely satisfied and willing to help build his business at the expense of, well, expense. John's team is great. Bryan was our project manager, and we really liked him. He was easy to work with and easy to get a hold of in the evenings when we were walking around with a measuring tape and level checking things out. There were a few hiccups in the project, but I didn't ding his grade for them because a) they were not completely under his control, b) he always made up for any problems, c) any project of this size will have hiccups and d) the good outweighed the bad. We did have a prolonged permitting process. It was the first time he had worked in Arlington, we live in a duplex so there are weird rules, and I think he just got unlucky with a county employee on a power trip. Regardless, it was a frustrating start and made us nervous - but worked out in the end. Also, unfortunately the carpenter assigned to our project was in an accident shortly after finishing the cabinets but before the trim. The trim phase was frustrating - there were a few redos and it took a while. However, in the end it was all finished to our satisfaction and we did understand that it was an unfortunate incident which happened to impact our build. Overall, we were very happy working with Suncrest. We would definitely recommend that you give them a call if you are considering a similar project. And make sure you get Mauricio to do your tile!!
Description of Work: We put a two story addition on our South Arlington Duplex. The footprint of the addition was approximately 24' x 15'. On the main floor we added a kitchen/dining area. The floor was tile with radient heating. The former kitchen was gutted and turned into a laundry room with a utility sink, shelves, coat closet, and countertops. Upstairs they removed the existing bathroom to make way for a hallway and put in a hall bath and master suite with a bathroom. The bedroom has vaulted ceilings. The hall bath has a tile floor and tile surround on the itty bitty tub/shower. The master bath has marble flooring, a double sink vanity and a tiled shower. Our existing house was built pretty much like a bunker in 1939 - brick exterior and concrete floors on each level (really), so Suncrest had a pretty challenging structure to work with and probably a couple surprises along the way. The foundation was a slab on grade, and after completing the build, they regraded our yard along with our neighbors, put in a landscaping box for our neighbor as a thank you for her patience during the process, rebuilt the fence and installed a new gate. As a major added bonus, our entire existing house was painted along with the addition and the hardwood floors throughout were refinished. The entire place looks brand new.

The final product we are completely satisfied with. The quality of the work was amazing, and was more than I expected considering the value we were getting. The quote that was provided was well below other contractors. Jon was great to work with, he was very flexible and completely handled all of the paperwork issues with the 203k loan. The only problems that arose were as a result of unclear communication on the front end that resulted in some problems later on in the project. Also, the timeliness was a bit of a problem. We expected things to be finished earlier than they actually were, and this could have been solved with better communication and expectation management. All in all, I would recommend Suncrest Builders to anyone who needed any remodeling work done.
Description of Work: We purchased a home using an FHA 203k loan. The home was a 3 level, 2 bedroom, 2 bath townhouse that needed wholesale cosmetic changes and some minor structural repairs. The list. Full kitchen remodel that includes replacing the floor, installing new cabinets, installing appliances (refrigerator, range, microwave, garbage disposal), removing a wall, building a knee wall to build an island bar, installed floor tile, installing new light fixtures, installing water line for refrigerator ice and water, installing outlets on the island bar, redirecting a air duct, and rewiring of lights. Full bathroom remodels. Upstairs bathroom - completely gutted the room to the studs, installed new subflooring, drywall, extended shower height, installed tub and fixtures, installed pedestal sink and fixture, installed new commode, installed new outlet, tiled the floor and shower, and installed accessories. Basement bathroom - removed two walls and rebuilt to add new space, installed new ventilation fan, installed sliding glass door, installed shower floor, installed new drywall, tiled the shower area and floor, installed new vanity and commode, and installed new light fixture. Basement - Gutted the entire basement, installed new drywall, new carpet, removed old closet, reframed two walls, and installed new finishing around stairs. installed new door in the kitchen to the basement, new tile for the utility room, installed washer and dryer, and framed and installed two new basement windows. Throughout the house - completely refinished the floors to include the stairs, installed new trim around the door, installed two new windows, and completely removed remnants of mold. Front porch - removed walls for enclosed mudroom, installed new flooring, wrapped beams with new wood, installed railing, and built new steps.

John Cantrall gave us his time and expertise in giving us a clear estimate and directing us to great suppliers. Work began on time and workes were trustworthy, respectable, and kept the job site clean. John and his project managers were accessible and responsive throughout the project. The end result is a beautiful bathroom with a walk in shower and separate laundry. We love it, and our guests do too.
Description of Work: We had a basement bedroom for guests, but they had to go upstairs for a bathroom, and two flights up for a shower. Suncrest helped us turn an oversized laundry room into a beautiful bathroom and laundry room. Plumbing had to be located under the foundation, electric and plumbing added, framing of walls, tiling and finishing work.

The project had many details in it, and we found Suncrest Builders to be less detail oriented than we are comfortable with. Communication with John was not good, but he tried very hard and his people tried very hard to make things right. Many items had to be redone, and some things in the bid weren't done, but other things were added, and he kept the cost close to the original bid, even with the changes in scope. He was very flexible, but my requests for tighter accounting for changes were unanswered. In the end the work was acceptable. If you use John be sure you have all your plans ready before hand and all the details (from what color wall, what carpet, what bathroom fixtures, what light fixtures, etc.) all picked out ahead of working with him and i think you will be very satisfied with his work.
Description of Work: Suncrest completely renovated our 700-800 sq. ft. basement including a) demolishing existing partially finished basement; b) creating a bathroom including breaking through concrete for plumbing, installing shower, vanity, medicine cabinet, accessories, etc.; c) creating a furnace room; d) roughing in electrical and cabling wiring; e) installing a new patio door; f) hanging several cherry cabinets; g) installing a bar sink and countertop; and h) installing duraceramic tile flooring and a berber rug. The project started April 8th and ended July 20th, 2011.

Response from SUNCREST BUILDERS
This was one of our most difficult projects. The clients went through the same design & selection process as every one of our other clients but had much difficulty making any decisions together. We were often given one set of directinos by one of the homeonwers which we acted on only to get a seperate set of directions from the other homeowner. This resulted in us repeatedly having to modify work in place. Quite often we had to stand witness to "heated discusions" between the homeonwers which made all present quite uncomfortable to say the least. It is true that we had multiple employess work on the project. That is because we have employees that specialize in various aspects of the work. Our framer doesn't install trim carpentry. Our plumber doesn't install drywall. Our demo guys don't install finish trims. That is how we acheive a high quality product. We do not employ people that are ok at everything, we employ poeple that are fantastic at one thing. We regret that the clients had a less than favorable experience with Suncrest. We did our best given the environment we had to work in.

My experience with Suncrest Builders Company has been excellent so far. We liked them the most out of the five or six companies that we had interviewed for this work. We interacted with John from the company and he has been so good; we loved him. He gave us a great estimate. Everything he has done so far has been on the mark. He was very down to earth. He explained how he plans to do the work. He was willing to work with our budget and some other issues we have. We would certainly consider contacting him in the future.

He brought in some contracted crew that was completely incapable and we were having issue after issue. I was regularly contacting the owner to report the issues to him. In some cases, he would respond and apologize and say that he was going to fix it, but there were a couple of instances when I spoke with him and he was extremely rude and unprofessional and accused me of making things up. What really frustrated me the most was that he would be responsive when my husband spoke to him but did not show any respect when I was on the phone. I have had other people come in and tell that he ripped us off. Our whole project was supposed to complete in two months but it took five months.

Overall, this was a good company to work with for some major updates to our 1961 house. We had already had old wood paneling pulled from the stairwell and a basement room. They drywalled and painted both spaces and they look great. Cons: They didn't clean up well after themselves (left supplies behind), had us buy more paint than was actually required, and we weren't always sure when they would be there (though because we were not living in the house yet, and they had a key, that wasn't a huge problem). Pros: Work was done very carefully, very well, looks professional and really improves the space. We're very happy we got this done, and their price was much better than some other bids. We also had this company remodel our kitchen. We only got two bids on the kitchen, and Suncrest was not only less expensive than the other bid, they were also more flexible, more willing to work with our decisions, and, in general, much friendlier. We did not change the appliance layout in the kitchen, but everything else was a complete redo. They removed the old flooring and installed ceramic tile. They removed the old appliances and cabinets and installed new ones. They added a "peninsula" cabinet and counter. They refinished two small pantry cupboards with doors to match the new cabinetry. We had selected the materials we wanted for the kitchen on our own. John Cantrall helped us find the most economical ways to obtain the materials. For some, we purchased them directly, and with others, we purchased through one of his suppliers to leverage his contractor's discount. He was also able to advise us on materials we weren't sure of, such as under-cabinet lighting. Cons of the experience: I think we didn't spend enough time planning and documenting plans with John. As a result, there were details that didn't get done the way we wanted, and things had to be redone. I think this was a mutual problem, not entirely their fault, just not the best thing about the experience. We did not like their electrical subcontractor, and would definitely have preferred to work through John rather than directly with the subcontractor. The lead person on our job left before the final details could be completed, and his replacement did not have the same attention to detail. Pros of the experience: Their countertop subcontractor was great. The lead person on the job did an excellent job of cabinetry installation and tiling, including a glass tile backsplash behind the stove. They were totally willing to work with our design choices, helping us to work out the details as needed, but not pushing back on the overall plan, not pushing us to buy more expensive materials, etc. We had some materials delays, which caused the job to run long, but they were ready to come back and do the work that could be done as soon as materials arrived. John returns phone calls promptly, and will even schedule work dates/times by text message, which I loved. The overall result in the kitchen is stunning. Because we essentially did the design ourselves, and Suncrest implemented our design, the kitchen is just the way we want it. The work is high quality, and I enjoy being in and using the kitchen.

Company Owner: We had a really great experience working with John Cantrall, the owner of Suncrest Builders. John is creative, honest, easy to work with and, above all, someone who can be trusted! We never felt that we were being taken advantage of and always could approach John knowing he would take care of any concern. He was true to his word when he said "the job will not be finished until you are completely happy." Crew: John has really great guys working for him who were always punctual, polite and did a great job cleaning up every day. Estimate: John arrived on-time, spent about an hour with us discussing work to be done, and gave us some great ideas for some things we hadn't thought of or considered. His estimate was very detailed, which was a huge advantage over the other contractors submitting estimates. The actual expenses were exactly what was estimated. During the process, we expanded John's scope of work and were very pleased with his additional estimates. Client Supplied Materials: John works with several suppliers, such as Design House Kitchens (cabinets), The Tile Shop, Ferguson (fixtures), ABC Glass & Mirror (shower door), and Daltile (granite). He accompanied us to meet with design experts and this turned out to be a great experience as well. Work: We were very pleased with all of the work performed, which was professionally done. The crew started by gutting the kitchen and removing a load bearing wall between the dining room and the kitchen. Cabinet installation took longer than expected, but was expertly done [two identical cabinets were inadvertently swapped during installation. To his credit, John ordered two new cabinets to ensure a perfect installation]. John encouraged us to use Travertine stone for the kitchen floor, which turned out to be one our best decisions. John's tile guy did an absolutely amazing job installing the tile in a versailles pattern (another one of John's ideas). John's granite fabricator was punctual as well and did a fantastic job. And finally, the electrical work was done expertly and added just the right touch to our beautiful kitchen. After demolition of the kitchen, John's floor guys installed new white oak floors in the living room, dining room and master bedroom. The work was performed quickly and professionally. Since we tiled the kitchen floor, we needed a transition between the dining room hardwood and kitchen Travertine stone floor. Every prefabricated transition that was available just didn't look right. John came up with the idea to have a 4" wide, white oak transition custom made. It turned our to be a perfect solution and looks fantastic. In parallel with the kitchen work, the team gutted and worked on the master bath. We again choose Travertine stone and decided to install a frameless glass shower door. The tile work was masterfully done and the crew paid attention to every last detail. We decided to install radiant floor heating after work began and are really glad we did. While the kitchen is amazing, we can't believe the transformation that occurred in our master bath. It is spectacular! The final step was the guest bath. Work was done quickly and professionally. Our teenage girls love their new bathroom. Duration: The work probably took twice as long as we had originally anticipated. Some of that can be attributed to delays in delivery of client supplied materials and additional scope of work performed. Some to John having multiple jobs going and needed to juggle his crews. John is a very busy guy, which is understandable given the quality of the work performed and his reputation. He recently hired a project manager to assist him to keep his crews on schedule. In the end the additional wait was more than worth it! Summary: We are extremely pleased with our overall experience and intend on using Suncrest in the future.
Description of Work: Renovated kitchen, master bath, guest bath; installed new hardwood floors in living room, dining room and master bedroom; replaced electrical panel
Suncrest Builders were the best!!! We first started to use them for a backsplash installation on our old place. The tile work was amazing and the contractor was very detailed in getting my design correct so there were no confusion....also they hooked us up with the Tile Shop so we got a discount. When we moved, we called them back for estimates on our new place. They were the best prices and the contractors didn't annoy me like the ones we had before. We had a full basement remodel which included paint, new windows, bathroom, moving washer/dryer and setup the w/d hookup in basement...the transformation were so amazing!!! They also did our full kitchen remodel...and they gave lots of helpful suggestions that really improved the kitchen (i.e. change the old lights to recess lights, etc). Afterwards, we had 2 bedrooms' windows replaced....their guys were very detailed and matched the window pain moldings to that of each bedroom. I had asked for an itemized quote and it was the most detailed I have seen. (I hate surprises where they don't tell you that they weren't going to throw out your old toilet, vanity, etc). Wish we had use them for our projects for previous years. We got quotes for future projects that we planned to do and will definitely call them back.

I never ever heard from Suncrest again. I find it discourteous to waste my time and his, discussing the project and then delaying the starting of our project while I waited for his estimate, during which time I could have got other estimates.
Description of Work: Contacted Suncrest Builders to provide a quote for a master bath remodel. John Cantrall set up a date to come to our home. He came and spent approximately 30-45 minutes with me. I provided details of exactly what we required, which involved gutting of the bathroom and replacing everything. The remodel involvesh minor structural changes, relocating toilet and changing the walk in shower configuration. He mainly focused on the new lighting, unsure why, but agreed to provide me with a detailed estimate of the job in a week's time.

The project began in early November and we thought it would wrap by Thanksgiving. Work began with a flurry. The siding and roof were replaced in just a few days. I noticed the roof needed some "touch-up" work afterwards and the workers took care of it with ease. Then there was a short delay before the electrical work began. The eletrical work took longer than planned for reasons that were both preventable and unpreventable. For example, a county inspector refused to approve the electrical work until a special break switch was installed -- something that didn't occur to anyone until after the fact. A window was removed and replaced by a door. Nicely done. Exterior lighting was put up and this process too was delayed for a few days because the wall mounts weren't big enough support the lanterns I purchased. Project was completed a few weeks later than anticipated. Overall, we think the project went pretty well and are very pleased with the result. It took a little longer than it probably needed to (I'm sure we and the contracted firm feel this way), but no big deal. The project was very competively priced, the management was knowledgable and responsive, and the workers were skilled and hard working. Minor drawbacks that cost everyone a little time and energy included occasional miscommunication and minor construction mistakes/oversights.
Description of Work: Detached garage was renovated by replacing wood siding with new, top-of-the-line siding, replacing the roof (removed two layers of ancient shingles and put down new 30-year shingles), knocking out a window and replacing it with a door (once entryway was expanded), running electricity to the garage (there was no power in it previously) and installing lights and sockets, ripping out the old garage door and replacing it with a new one, and repairing some of the concrete foundation that was falling apart.

From the initial contact in May 2010, owner John Cantrall was pleasant, detailed and willing to make requested floor plan changes to try and address the problematic duct run. The project start was mid-July with an agreed upon timeline of 4 weeks to complete the project in order to accommodate visiting family in mid-August. In a call to John a few days before the anticipated start, we came to learn it would not start on the planned date but 3 days later. Once the worker arrived he had no idea of what the project entailed. Throughout the project lack of communication between John and his workers, along with plumbing and electrical permit issues caused delays, enough so that it took twice as long than planned to complete the renovation. Having to be involved almost daily turned out to be beneficial as it allowed us to incorporate modifications / suggestions with John to end up with the bathroom we desired. Other factors that contributed to some frustrations included workmen rushing to meet the original deadline which caused poor quality issues, failing to plan plumbing runs that resulted in unneeded damages / alterations to the existing structure, having to pull permits, use of sub-contractors who would come at the end of their day job working late into the evening, floors and stairs that were not protected against damage. And now, this is why we will strongly consider using Suncrest Builders again. At the conclusion of the project, John met with us, allowed us to voice our concerns for the things outlined above and worked with us to come to a fair and equitable financial conclusion. He was sincere in his apology for perhaps agreeing to an unreasonable time frame. He stated that he would make a valid effort to incorporate into his business some of the items discussed. The final outcome of the bathroom project was nothing short of spectacular and exceeded our expectations.
Description of Work: The project entailed combining two small, back-to-back bathrooms (one with only a bathtub, the other with only a shower) into one large bathroom with a different floor plan. The largest challenge was incorporating a large vertical ventilation duct and plumbing run that could not be relocated. The remodel involved new plumbing, electrical, lighting, floor tile, wall tile, leveling the floor and bumping out a bedroom wall for a 36" wide soaking tub.

John Cantrall the owner was personally involved in oversight of all aspects of the job - from estimate through completion. He is professional, friendly and communicates well. Very responsive to questions and willing to flex his schedule to meet ours. He provided several estimates and all have been competitive. The crews that John employs are also professional, timely, and communicate well. They are all craftsmen in what they do - not journeymen/apprentices. The quality of their work is excellent and either met or in many cases exceeded my expectations (and I am an advanced DIY-er so have a pretty good idea what is and is not quality work). These guys are quality. John and his team stayed on budget, on time, and were quick to communicate when it was needed. I will definitely continue to solicit bids from John on my upcoming projects. I recommend that you do so also!

We were very pleased with the overall experience, starting with the free quote where John (the owner) demonstrated that he has an intimate knowledge of the entire buidling process. We had multiple companies quote for the work, but after meeting with SunCrest, it was always just a question of how we can work with them. I was also very pleased that they were willing to give a little on the price, and later our trust was rewarded when they showed that they were willing to be sensible about the price changes when the plans had to change in the middle of the project. Just remember, any remodelling project will not go as quickly as it does on "Extreme Makeover". That's TV. In the real world, projects like ours can take weeks, but I must admit that we were a little disappointed that it took 4 weeks. It's a minor flaw that we are prepared to forgive, as I think it is as a result of the care and "perfectionism" that their workers demonstrate. Anyway, the best part of working with SunCrest is the quality of the work they do. They employ highly skilled and experienced workers who do outstanding work, and it shows in the final results. The tiling work that was done is first-class and we get to enjoy it every single day. Thanks, Lubos. To leave you with a final thought, my wife and I could not be any happier with the work that SunCrest did, and our friends have been very impressed too. We plan to use them again on our next project.
Description of Work: We had our master bathroom renovated...gutted and then rebuilt from the ground up.
These guys are the best! Edwin and his crew really respected our home: hanging interior plastic sheeting over doorways and placing wide sheets of heavy duty paper over our floors and carpeting to protect the parts of our home not being worked on. (They even got rid of the huge number of stinkbugs that invaded the rooms they were working on when the guys had to work with opened doors & windows.) They were amazing when they needed to move furniture -- extremely gentle and careful with our furnishings. They worked with us to get the paint color-matching just right, did a beautiful job on crown molding, and made sure every room was done right. At one point they discovered mold growing under some wallpaper -- they removed/replaced/painted the damaged wall area.
Description of Work: John Cantrell and SunCrest Builders did a fabulous job for us. We had sustained substantial ice-dam and snow damage from the February 2010 snowstorm -- it ruined exterior siding, brought down some of our interior ceiling board (and damaging much of the rest of our ceilings), as well as stained ceilings and walls -- involving a total of 8 rooms (and some interior halls). We got bids from several contractors, but found John Cantrell's bid to be the most complete and usable (especially in working with our insurance company!) The quality of the work was excellent in terms of (exterior): replacing particle board siding and painting; and (interior): replacing/painting of drywall ceilings and walls, removing damaged wallpaper, installing crown molding, removing blown-in roof insulation for entire upper level of home (and replacing with rolled insulation throughout), preparation and clean-up. Additionally, SunCrest and John's crew even did work not within the contract price -- because John wanted to make things even better! The crew doing the work (Edwin & company) were real pros, as well as being pleasant and trustworthy people to have in our home -- even when we weren't there. John was always accessible. His price was the lowest of the best three bids we received. Would we use SunCrest again?? YES!
Overall experience was great. Price was right in line with other bids and quite a bit lower than one other person with high recommendations. John was very responsive throughout the work, checked in regularly, and was just very professional, likeable, and easy to work with. Doug and Eric did most of the job - on the first day, they were supposed to arrive at 8:00 am, and they called at 7:45 to find out if it was okay to come a few minutes early, because they had left extra time to be sure to beat the traffic! That was characteristic of the experience overall. Work was done quickly but all top-notch. They worked with our schedule, even trying to time their work around our toddler's naps when possible! The whole upstairs area they did looks terrific - we couldn't be happier with it. The only glitch came when some wood floor glue got spilled on our new mud-room floor, but John ensured that someone came out to fix it. In fact, when the first attempt to fix it wasn't quite right, he said he would have someone come and redo the entire floor. We were headed out of town, but we trusted him enough to pay him before the fix was complete. We'd only been back for about a day when he called us (he knew our travel schedule) to be sure we could schedule a time for the fix - he could have easily waited on it (it was just going to cost him time, since they weren't making money on it), but he didn't let it slide for a second. We've already recommended Suncrest to others, and plan to use them again. Excellent experience.
Description of Work: John's crew took up old flooring (linoleum) and carpet, and installed wood floors (which we ordered) in 2 rooms and a hallway. Framed and built new wall with door, framed and built new closet, filled in gaps in walls. Rewired electrical to allow for switch-controlled lighting and ceiling fans in two rooms. Re-did trim on windows and doors. Painted all interior.

Overall, the experience was great. I felt comfortable with all of John's employees and they did excellent work. I was really impressed with the tile and paint jobs. The tile was hard to put down because our floors weren't exactly even, but he took his time and they look wonderful. The paint I was really worried about. We have a red accent wall that needed to be touched up in areas from the demolition. It took a couple of days, but the guys were able to match the color and have everything look even. Whenever there was an issue, John made sure to have it addressed. He came by several times to walk through and make sure everything was going smoothly and see if I had any questions. I was really happy with his commitment to complete the job to my standards. I will be calling John for any remodeling we do in the future.
Description of Work: We had the kitchen completely gutted and reworked. This included tearing out a pantry and filling in an existing doorway. The laminate flooring was replaced with ceramic tile. All new cabinets and countertops. Took down the old lighting and added recessed lighting and a pendant light fixture. Painted the kitchen, to include a red wall that was very hard to match.

Having never done a remodel before, I was nervous but from the start, John was great at explaining what to expect. His team was always professional, clean (they completely sealed off the kitchen during construction), and did quality work, often suggesting details that would benefit the kitchen. Our kitchen gets rave reviews and we have already recommended Suncrest to a number of our friends and plan to use them again for bathroom remodeling and other custom projects in the future.
Description of Work: We used Suncrest to remodel our kitchen which included cutting a large passthrough in an existing wall, cabinet and appliance installation, granite, lighting, and the tile backsplash.
John, the owner, was very easy to work with and his crew was easy to work with. It did get off on a shaky start, it did seem slow to get the project started. In the beginning the communication among the workers was off, but John was readily available to intervene and get things rolling. The finished product was exactly what we wanted with good attention to detail. Their clean up was good, they did clean up after themselves.
Description of Work: They installed a basement bathroom and they remodeled an upstairs. They closed off a living room and added an extra doorway and closets creating an in law suite.

The quality of the work was excellent. I have had lots of compliments on the new look of my kitchen. Francisco, who did the granite work, did an excellent job, provided a sink at a competitive cost, and installed a larger sink than, technically, should have fit in the allowed space without a problem. The tile flooring in the basement was completed professionally and quickly. The wrong storm door was installed initially, but when I brought it to John's attention they replaced it with the correct one without any problem. The only problem I had was with the amount of time that it took for the kitchen. There were some timing issues, because the flooring had to be installed before the cabinets could be installed, but we waited until the cabinets were available before beginning the flooring to avoid having the kitchen torn up longer than necessary. John estimated two weeks of no kitchen, it turned out to be closer to four weeks...not maybe a big deal, except when you have no kitchen sink. To be fair, he did give me a discount for the delay. John was easy to work with and I really felt that he was trying to do the very best job possible.
Description of Work: Remove carpet and install tile flooring in basement. Pour concrete slab patio. Install new storm door in basement. Replace vinyl kitchen flooring, wood entryway flooring and living room/dining room carpet with prefinished wood flooring. Tear out railing and partial walls in living/dining room. Tear out and replace kitchen cabinets. Install new granite countertops. Install new tile backsplash. Reinstall old appliances. Install new sink and faucet. Remove ceiling fixtures in kitchen and replace with canister and track lighting. Widen kitchen doorway.

Our experience with Suncrest Builders was a positive one from the start. John was very professional in the beginning when he provided us the initial quote. He broke things down on the quote and gave us correct information that helped us determine the work that could be accomplished within our budget. Although the initial price was high he patiently worked with us till we could fix the price and scope of work with him. Even though we hit an early roadblock where we found the entire wall could not be broken down and would impact our initial plans significantly, John was very supportive as they helped us decide on workarounds. John would come meet us late in the evenings because it suited our schedule to discuss progress. They really wanted us to be happy customers and added a couple of features like recess lighting and extra electrical outlets. At one point they helped us out regarding an unrelated drywall issue in the house since it was something they could do relatively easily and did not charge us anything for it. They went over and beyond what we expected of contractors and always put our needs first. The quality of the work was very good. They finished every milestone on time so that other dependencies did not get pushed. The initial demolition and rewiring and the drywall reconstruction was also very promptly completed while maintaining quality. Overall our experience with Suncrest builders was very good and we would work with them again and recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Demolish wall between kitchen and dining room, redirect plumbing and electric lines, create breakfast bar, redo drywall, re-organize cabinetry.
