We recommend them for any upcoming remodel/restoration projects and will hire them again for projects that we have coming down the pipeline! Thanks so much!
Description of Work: We have worked with Virginia Building Services (VBS) for several projects in our home and could not be happier with the process and completed work! From installing a new roof/gutters, remodeling a bathroom, and helping with other restoration work (e.g., plaster repair, interior door replacement, rebuilding basement stairs, replacing and securing new footings for front porch, etc.), this team knows their stuff and did a wonderful job.

After a house fire our entire home had to be rebuilt inside. New walls/plumbing/wiring/floors everything. I was given a nice 4 month timeline (we were living in a hotel with our 3 dogs) and it seemed pretty reasonable. We did a few walkthroughs and went over several things and everything seemed like it was in order and the home was going to be rebuilt with no issues. I had full trust in them and was happy with our choice in renovators. I had chosen wrong. Weeks went by and nothing happened at the house. Nobody showed to do work and my house just sat. Once every other week a small team of 3-4 would swing by and work for a few hours to make it look like something was happening but 90% of the time my house sat. The whole time this was going on my wife and I with our 3 dogs were sitting in a hotel waiting watching as their 4 month timeline went out the window. When they finally did start the work things moved sporadically and when I would try to catch someone over there to talk to them there would be no one but workers, no supervisor. Everything that they do is contracted out, they do almost no work themselves so anytime you see anyone they aren't with VBS and can't help you. While I would love to just write everything down that happened it would take hours and would be almost to much to read so I will make it as short and to the point as possible. This is their work in a nutshell: They hire the cheapest labor they can find and it shows. My windows don't seal, they are crooked, and they look terrible. I got one coat of paint on my walls WITH NO PRIMER and you can see bare spots in every room. The plaster work is terrible. EVERY wall in the house has SEVERAL spots where you can see either the tape lines or the putty knife marks. Our bathroom was done wrong and will have to be redone at our expense. The linoleum is already starting to come up and it's been less than 3 months. They ordered the cheapest doors they could (even when we paid for the more expensive ones) and we had to replace them when we moved in because they were damaged. The hardwood floors were redone by Lees Flooring and is atrocious, you can see the sanding marks everywhere and he thinned out the lacquer so much there are bare spots everywhere. They were supposed to do our basement as well but it took so long to do the first floor (it was closing in on 6 months) that we just wanted to get back in and told them to forget about it (money they just kept). Now they do offer a 3 year warranty HOWEVER... they take weeks to come out (if they even answer your messages) if they even do come out and most of the time try to make repairs that look terrible so you will think twice about calling them next time you have an issue. They make promises that they either don't intend to or can't keep and will lie about it later putting it on you making you think you did something wrong. These guys are crooks and after leaving this review I know I won't get any of 3 year warranty but I'm not really missing out on much. I'm sure they'll get on here and give a bunch of excuses as to why things went the way they did but trust me, I wouldn't trust the Levan brothers to change a lightbulb in my house after all of this. They'll try to make it sound like it was me or my house or the weather that made everything take so long but it all comes down to poor management, poor work ethic, and hiring the cheapest labor you can. Do the work right the first time and you don't get reviews like this.

Though everything appears nice and neat to the untrained eye, we had a lot of problems with the bathroom reno, and since our glowing review of the initial renovation, we have had several problems with that as well. The upstairs closet that they expanded was poorly finished. After about a year, the door was coming off the hinges because they didn't use long enough wood screws, then a couple of days ago the whole rack (with all of our clothes) and shelf came falling down. The person who had installed it had not screwed it into a stud, so the weight of our clothes pulled it clean out of the wall over time. Also, we've noticed a lot of short cuts were taken that are coming into light. In our dining room, there is a nail sticking out where there used to be crown molding, and instead of removing it, they painted it. Under the cabinets where the kick plate was added, the wood is about an inch too short, so you can see the unfinished bottom of the cabinet. Also, we can't open two side-by-side kitchen cabinet doors at the same time because the necessary tolerance between cabinets wasn't allowed. Also, the person who installed the clips to hold up the shelves within the cabinets put them upside down which could have caused a huge disaster if we hadn't noticed and fixed it. The bathroom was gutted in order to make a bowing wall straight, but they never pulled the original studs, so the new wall is crooked as well and so the radiator, when put back in was much tighter to the wall than the other end, and they had to drill a new hole in the new tile floor to pull it out so it would look straight. I could go on... Basically, we keep noticing little things that come up that just show a lack of attention to detail or oversight. I'm sad to say, I would not recommend them any longer simply based on quality of work or lack thereof.
Description of Work: This is an amendment to a prior review of ours. They had done extensive remodeling in our 1919 house. The kitchen, walls were removed, a closet was expanded, a closet was added to make a fourth bedroom possible, and later they came back to do our bathroom downstairs. (cost includes both renovation projects, totaled.)

Description of Work: We initially contacted VBS under the guiadance of our home insurer after damage due to ice dam. Ostensibly at the time, VBS was included on their insurance company's preapproved list of network providers. | |We had experienced extensive damage to our home due to ice and water. Upon inspection, the damage was more extensive than intially thought. VBS came recommended; and my initial background check didn't find any red flags. However, just b/c it isn't listed; doesn't mean that there are not tremendous concerns. I have found out that a myriad of consumers are apprehensive in reporting concerns; therefore, complaints are not filed. | |In our remodel and repair, the initial crew and project manager displayed very poor craftmanship, punctuality and professionalism. In doing our master bath, they cracked two tubs and endeavored to cover it up. The project was considered "shoddy work" as espoused by our insurance adjuster and two other independent contractors. There were a myriad of things found wrong and or damaged: Window header that was "pieced together"; cracked tub (twice); uneven wall; improper installation of pipes; the drywall to the ceiling was left unpainted; damaged washer and dryer that was purchased new two weeks prior; scratched up our hardood floors and our master bedroom suite; contractors who did not show up for a two week span; and leaving nails, screws and debris scattered throughout our home. My youngest son was just beginning to crawl; and we could not allow him on the floor. We lived among the construction which was a nightmare within itself. | |The master bath had to be regutted and rebuilt by an entirely new crew. After having the prior work assessed by our adjuster and two independent contractors, we fired the initial crew and began accepting bids from other contractors. | |The initial project manager and crew lacked puntuality and quality and endeavored to lie their way out of damages. They tried to govern blame to the subcontractors that were involved, indicating that the subcontractors should pay for the damages. However, the subcontractors were hired by VBS who maintains resposibilty for all the work. | |The initial project mgr was a part owner of the company and worked with his own crew. The adjuster asked us to give another crew a chance to correct things. We later found out that some of the contractors at VBS would not work for this project manager because they found out that he did "underhanded and shoddy" work. | |Charlie, the contractor who finally repaired our master bath was professional, thorough and diligent in his tasks. He displayed fine craftsmanship and dependability. He and a subcontractor from GNE Tile (Nathan Kenny) I would rate with an A. | |I would not recommend VBS for anything if it is headed up by the same project mangager and part owner, (Terry Mullins), that was initially involved in our project. We still maintain photographs that display the shoddy and unprofessional work. I promised them that I would show any potential consumer evidence of their lack of craftsmanship, damages and efforts to beguile if I found out that the work was being conducted by the same project manager and crew that we initially used. | |I hate to think that one crew could bring such reproach to the entire company. However, their reputation is governed by each individual that works for them. If the majority owners condone this lack of craftsmanship, what does it say about the whole. | |I will say that after a major fire last year, our insurance adjuster did relay that he would not even consider that company. | |As a reiteration, VBS maintains some credibility and has some crews and contractors who display fine craftsmanship and professionalism. Yet, I would caution consumers to research the company's prior work. We learned the hard way. Go out and talk to property owners face to face and inspect previous projects. People are more prone to be forthright in speech than in writing. And remember, 'a "picture" speaks a thousand words'. | |An A to one of the contractors, Charlie and the subcontractor from GNE (Nathan Kenny).

[member name removed] derogatory comments have come to our attention. Here are the facts about [member name removed] sudden attack against VBS: •[member name removed] is commenting on repairs performed at his residence OVER THREE YEARS AGO – Why? •[member name removed] called recently to inquire if VBS would be interested in helping resolve his latest insurance claim (the truest picture of his opinion of VBS) •VBS declined to help [member name removed] – we had not forgotten [member name removed] skill at mean spirited attacks, self-righteousness and rudeness •Consequently, this gentleman attempted to savage our reputation of thirty years of serving the insurance repair community in this forum •[member name removed] is a self-professed expert on most all subjects and will gladly lecture anyone willing to listen VBS recommends that all contractors avoid any contact with [member name removed]. It appears that his insurance company feels the same way as they will not renew his policy. Mike Levan - President

David LeVan came out to do a estimate on our project. He was sent out by our Insurance adjuster to give a estimate. While he was here and doing the measuring I had a question, and was told he had been in the business long enough that he didn't need to answer questions, we decided to go with someone else and he told me on the phone good luck with getting the floors put down right, and thanked me for wasting his time. After being treated rude in my home, and then being told that over the phone, I wouldn't use this contractor to fix my dog house. I always thought you treat the customer with respect. But I guess with these people it only applies if you pay them and let them do your work, even if they over charge you.

I was sent to this claim as a follow up from his insurance company (which we are a preferred contractor), not his adjuster because his adjuster was finished dealing with him. They wanted another opinion/estimate for this customer who had this claim open for months before I got involved. My initial suspicions of [Member name removed] was that he was fishing for a free estimate to get more money from his insurance company but I relaxed that notion when he informed me that we would more than likely be getting the job because he was having a hard time finding a reliable contractor to finish it...first one sent by the insurance company did not come back, probably because they knew who they were dealing with. After spending several hours meeting with this gentleman, writing an accurate estimate for water damage repairs, and getting more money from his insurance (they went with my estimate on the revised scope), I informed him we were ready to get started and sent him a contract thinking he was a man of his word. I called after I did not hear from him for several weeks to find out that he had already hired another person, which is his right, but I was irked by the fact that did not have the decency to call me and let me know of his decision and whether right or wrong, let him know it how I felt. These are the facts and for him to besmirch our name in a public domain is ridiculous. Please see the other, more accurate comments about VBS on this website and local BBB pages (A+ rating). Thanks, David Levan

We were very pleased with their work. Our designer/point person Ron was super helpful and accessible throughout the whole process. He was happy to listen to our suggestions and make our and quot;dream kitchenand quot; come true. Very flexible staff, with a project manager, Mark, to make sure things happened on time, the lead contractor, Jeff was high on quality and mindful of our tight schedule. I'm pleased with everyone's work as our home is quite old and with that, always surprising (no level floors to be found). They reused some of the lumber from the demo of the closet to create the new one, and they have great connections with their contractors so they can pull a few favors when needed. One of the only complaints is that our painters weren't quite as detail oriented as we would have preferred, and some glitches arose with the kitchen that go with the fact that we went with prefab cabinets so it's not as customizable as it could have been. But overall we are quite happy with the results and plan to use them again for our future projects.
Description of Work: gutted and renovated the kitchen with new cabinets and counter tops and electrical, moved a doorway to create more space for cabinets, opened wall between kitchen and dining room, added closet to guest room, switched closet from one room to another to create a double closet in master bedroom, installed whole house fan, painted, replaced staircase, moved HVAC and plumbing

We were able to schedule repairs within two weeks after selecting the new materials. The workers came exactly at the scheduled time and worked continiously throughout the day. One of them walked around the house several times during their work to pick-up debri and nails that might have fallen on the ground and on the deck. The job was done professionally and efficiently. We would hire them again and would recommend them to anyone who needs roof work done.

Description of Work: We had a lot of hail damage to our house from a storm last spring. Virginia Building Service was on the recommended list from our insurance company, USAA. VBS did a wonderful job and were right on budget. We had our roofs replaced at the house, the dock and the storage shed, all the screen replaced on our screen porch and other work such as gutter and siding damage. I would recommend VBS to anyone. They are honest, timely and did a great job.

David from VBS was conscientious and amendable to making everything work to everyone's satisfaction. We were exploring variious ideas to solve our problem and he provided insight and guidance to help us along that pathway. The two gentlemen who performed the actual work were running a little late that morning, but the company contacted me to let me know tyhey were running late, something that many contractors don't do. The work went smoothly until they found the new door wasn't sized for the current opening. They conferred with me and proceeded to correct the opening and installed the door. They had carefully saved the old brick molding and trim, however we had to replace the inside trim due to the changed opening. David was very good in keeping to the original quote even though there was additional hours and materials required to correct the sizing issue. Ultimately, he only charged for the extra materials. Remodeling is never an easy process. Working with a contractor is even less so. David and VBS made this job far easier then others may have. I appreciate their efforts and effiecency.
Description of Work: We replaced faux french doors with a slider door system. They needed to remove the old system, adjust the opening to fit the incorrectly measured replacement slider, and install the sliding door.

I was less than satisfied. They weren't easy to work with and they required a lot of supervision to make sure things were done the way I wanted them done and particularly the finish work was not high-quality. The plastering around outlets and things like that, and the painting was not good either.
