First of all, he misrepresented himself as a professional painter. Turns out that his father had been and then his father died so then he decided he was. His only crew was an uncle who was way past retirement age. When I paid him, I was no to make a check out to Todd or the make of his business but to make it out in the name of his uncle. What I realized later was you can't sue somebody if they don't have any assets. He didn't do what he said he would do in terms of power washing or properly preparing the surfaces. He had a nasty attitude. His work was sporadic in that a professional has a schedule of what areas are painted first and which are left towards the last. This guy would paint something on the north side of the house and then when he gets bored with that, he'd be over on the west side painting something. So there were parts in my entire house that had been painted and parts that had not. The painting itself was not quality painting. Where he used the brush, you could see definite brush strokes. He was very non-professional, very inept at the trade. He broke several of my storm windows because he took them out. He took a couple of them to an independent hardware to have the glass replaced but he never picked them up. When I fired him, the storm windows were still out. It was then that I discovered how many had been broken. I ended up having to take them in and having to pay the entire price to have every one of the storm windows replaced. The work was extremely poor quality. He actually said to me once, “I’m the painter and you’re not. Shut up.” He wanted payment every week. When I told my sister-in-law what was going on, she traveled 2 hours to come stay with me. She observed him for a couple of days and then she told me that I have to fire him now. I know he cheated me on the paint and I know for a fact, because I had a painter check it out, that he was watering the paint. I called him one morning before he got here and I said to him, “When you do get on my property, all I want you to do is pick up your equipment, put them on your vehicle, get off my property. You are fired. Do not ever come back again.” He did not understand it, he kept calling and calling. I answered one of his calls and told him that he’s not doing a good job and he has a lousy attitude. Some days he just wouldn’t show up. It was just a horrible experience. I did make a complaint to the BBB. So letters were exchanged between me and BBB and then him and BBB. What ended up happening was that he wrote a letter and then went in and he just charmed the lady at the BBB. The letter that I got back from the BBB is they could find no validation for my claims. I decided not to sue him because I didn’t have the money. The trick is to pay attention to the red flags.
