I am filing a complaint against the Bank of America Starkey Road branch in Roanoke, VA. On Friday, August 29, before the three-day Labor Day weekend, I deposited a check for over $11,000 into my small business banking account. In spite of the ATM encouraging me not to request a receipt to save paper, I did request a receipt. On the receipt, the image of the check is clearly legible. During the holiday weekend, I checked online banking to be sure the check had posted. Immediately following the deposit in online banking, there was a deduction for the full amount with the cryptic description DEPOSIT ADJ/CORR IMAGE. I tried to call the business banking line but they were closed for the weekend and would not open again until Tuesday. I called the personal banking line and spoke to a kind person who nonetheless was unable to help me and told me I would need to call the small business support line on Tuesday. On Tuesday, after several attempts to navigate through the voice response system, I finally talked to a live human being in small business customer support. She told me she could not help me, I would have to call the local branch. My first four or five attempts to call the local branch were unanswered, and my call rolled over to the online banking support number. I finally got through to human being at the local branch, who promised to research the issue and call me back in 20 minutes. Two hours later, I had not heard back from her, so I started calling again. It took six or seven attempts to get through to the branch. When I finally reached the person who promised to research the issue, she told me the check had been made out to me personally, but deposited into my business account, so they pulled the check and sent it back to me. When I asked for clarification, she explained this meant it was being processed and mailed today, and I should have it back in 5 to 7 business days. When I explained that there had never been a problem before with checks made out to me, endorsed by me--the business account holder--and deposited into my business account, she said those checks should never have been accepted in the past, and furthermore, since there was no deposit slip with the check, how could they be sure that I meant to deposit it into my business account? I said I used my business check card, keyed my business PIN number, and deposited the check into my business account. That was a pretty good indication that I intended to deposited into my business account. And the ATM doesn t take deposit slips anymore, by the way. She insisted they couldn't be sure that s what I meant to do, so they reversed the deposit and returned the check to me. Without a phone call. Without an e-mail. By mail. In 5 to 7 days. I asked her why, when faced with such a choice, had they chosen the most damaging course of action for me, and then not even attempted to notify me.
