I placed a call to Woodfin early in the afternoon about having no heat. I was told a technician would come to the house between 5:30-7:30 pm and would call my cellphone first. Apparently he came at 6:30 pm but did not call first; I was not waiting in the cold house, I didn't know he had come. The next day he came, replaced a part and addressed the problem which involved air in the lines prohibiting gas from drawing into furnace.
Description of Work: Service on oil furnace.

Excellent. We found Woodfin on Angie's List. Larry S. was our service technician. He showed up exactly on time, listened to what we said we thought was wrong, did all the necessary work straight-away and was only on-site less than one (1) hour. Larry S. was completely polite, professional and trust-worthy. We had bought two (2) replacement digital thermostat's from Lowe's and he determined which of the two was best. The new thermostat was smaller than the original, which would not cover the same wall-space as the old unit (a portion of unpainted drywall was visible). So, Larry S. suggested and installed a vanity back-plate (which he had in his truck) to solve the problem. It looks like an original/new installation. We had a couple leaks in the crawl-space under/near the HVAC and April-aire units which Larry S. checked-out. He determined that the PVC drain pipe was clogged which was causing the normal condensation/evaporation water to not flow outside the crawl-space. He blew-out and snaked the drain pipe which solved both of our and quot;leakand quot; problems. Needless to say, we were happy to find out that no major malfunction existed and that no major (and expensive!) replacement/repair work was needed. We were impressed by the straight-forward approach and manner of Larry S. and Woodfin...plus, no unnecessary and quot;sales pitchand quot; for anything not needed. Woodfin is our new HVAC and quot;go-toand quot; Company.
Description of Work: Installed new (digital) thermostat inside house. Checked for source of leak in crawl-space HVAC unit. Checked and serviced April-aire Humidifier (also in crawl-space).

I called on a Friday afternoon and they arrived promptly on Monday morning. The technician was personable and professional. He gave us the estimate for the work and explained their pricing in detail.Apparently our old kitchen faucet was really difficult to remove - it was the original from when the house was built 28 years ago. The plumber had to struggle to get it loose, but stuck with it and didn't complain. He then installed the new faucet and drains and cleaned up completely before leaving. We are very pleased with the work and the personnel.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen faucet and repaired a leak in the drain pipe.

the technician called first to say he was on his way. he explained in detail the charges for each service and that they accepted checks or credit cards. i agreed to the charges and he removed my old thermostat and installed the new one - after reading the instructions to make sure it was installed correctly (a first!!). he then checked the heat pump and found it was a bit low on coolant and topped it off and then checked the rest of the system and showed me how to read the serial number to get the manufacture date (sweet!). the tech was totally professional and knew what he was doing. i highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: inspected the a/c system and installed a programmable thermostat. the tech had to add a bit of freon to the system and checked out the rest of the heat pump.

Old unit froze up again. Had to install a completely new system. The sales and tech people were knowledgeable and professional. The old unit fizzled on a holiday weekend, of course. They found a sales rep willing to come to the house on that Sunday and he arranged for installation later in the week (weather had turned cool, so there was no problem with waiting a few days). The system is the lowest priced one they offered - which is still quite high - but it seems to be super efficient. The installation is top notch. They are probably more expensive than other places, but the service and quality are worth it. We have been customers of theirs for decades.
Description of Work: Installed a complete new AC unit.

We chose to work with Woodfin for a couple of reasons. They were able to work with our budget, and we thought they provided the best quality service for the lowest price. They put a package together for all the things we needed done. It was a really good experience. They were very professional, polite, and courteous. They made sure we were informed about any changes. They were just friendly. They weren't the cheapest, but they weren't the most expensive. I would use them again.
Description of Work: We used Woodfin last fall for mold remediation. In addition to taking care of the mold, they installed a new duct system. They also lined under the house with a moisture barrier, and put extra intake into our system.

My home is now six years old. My previous service provider originally installed the HVAC systems. The upstairs HVAC system was a and quot;lemonand quot; and has been the subject of numerous service calls (average of twice per year). The coil in the indoor unit was replaced less than two years ago, which was only four years old at the time. Warranty covered the material, but not the labor. The outdoor unit has undergone numerous repairs, incuding a warranty replacement of the condenser unit and multiple calls related to capacitors, controls, refrigerant, etc. In December 2011, once again, the unit failed to operate properly and I contacted my previous service provider, who came to the home without the proper equipment, charged me a $135 fee, and stated that I needed a leak test performed. Since he did not have the equipment (or the time to perform the test), he qouted me a me a fee of $45 for a return trip and over $200 to perform the test and said they could come back sometime the next week. He also indicated that any major work would have to wait until after the holidays. My dissattisfaction witth my previous service provider caused me to contact Woodfin to examine the situation. They came to the home, performed a leak test (charged me $100 including the trip fee) and diagnosed the issue as a leaking coil (yet again). I opted to replace the entire unit so as to obtain a new 10 year warranty on the equipment. Woodfin came out to reoplace the unit the next day (December 23rd) and had it operational in less than 7 hours. So far, the unit has performed flawlessly.
Description of Work: Replaced indoor HVAC unit in attic (air handler/coil/controls) and tie-in to outdoor heat pump unit.

They showed up as scheduled. Even called in advance to confirm. Work was performed exactly as they said it would be within the timeframe given. Looks very professional and nice. They took care of everything including county permits and inspections. We never once had to call them to find out the status. They were on top of everything and in contact with us. We were impressed with their promptness, knowledge, and professionalism. They started out well and finished the same way. We will use them again. 12/26/11. This is an update to the above. As far as we know, the work performed is satisfactory. However, the office personnel is not. We paid the second half of the balance owed by handing a check to the last workman who was here when the work was completed. The check cleared our bank several days later. Last month we received a bill for the balance. Called and left a message. No one returned the call. We called back, explained the situation and were assured it was taken care of. This past Sat. we received yet another bill for the amount. Account number on bill is different from the previous bill. Called Sat. and was told call would be returned today, Mon. Also emailed them and explained the problem. No response from either. Called back today and left another message. Office is closed until tomorrow. Sat. person didn't know that? I am afraid if this continues, it will hit the collection dept. and eventually end up on our credit report and we will have to deal with getting it removed. Should not have happened in the first place but mistakes happen. But to not rectify the matter immediately or not return phone calls is totally unacceptable. Hopefully, it will be taken care of for real tomorrow. I will update.
Description of Work: Installed a propane generator for the house, including an additional fuse box. Ran lines from generator to fuse box and propane tank.

The technician arrived within minutes of the ETA and had diagnosed and repaired the furnace in less than an hour. We have used Woodfin in the past for other heating and AC issues and will continue to make them our company of choice.
Description of Work: The thermostats for our heating system went blank and shut down the furnaces. There was a loose wire to the blower motor which was triggering an emergency shut off switch.

I spent less than $200 on that service. I liked that they returned my calls because there was some other company that I called too and they just never returned my calls. They seemed very nice. The guy that came here explained how the fireplace worked. I thought the price was fair.

After dealing with other well known organizations who are less than professional and try to "sell" in the background - I have found Woodfin's technicians to be rather "geeky" about HVAC rather than just having come out of a marketing sales class (which I have experienced from other vendors). I feel I received honest assessments of my system - with absolutely no pressure or scare tactics that others have subtly used in the past. Woodfin may not be the cheapest but do you really think you are going to get a professional organization for $59 or $69 to look at your system and have a high quality service? You might - or then again you might not. Woodfin has given me no reason to doubt them in the several years we have had them. In addition they do not CHARGE BY THE HOUR. It is absurd to use companies like that - a former provider need a part and had to go back to their shop to get it - I was charged $80 for that time - that is just crazy. Woodfin seems to be trying and for that I'll gladly pay for quality.

He showed up on time, took a look at the electrical box, looked at the hot tub and said the problem was the hot tub. The fuses kept blowing within seconds of putting them in, but he could not tell me why or what to do about it. When he said there would be a $60 charge (he was there maybe 10 minutes) I was floored. Not a happy customer.
Description of Work: He charged me $60 to tell me there was nothing he could do. What a waste.

I am sorry that you did not feel we were due a trip charge. We drove out to your house on a Saturday morning and checked out your problem. We determined that the problem was with your hot tub not in the wiring leading into the hot tub. Not being qualified to check out a hot tub's inner workings, our technician advised you to call a hot tub repair company to fix the problem. I am sorry you were not aware of the trip charge that the majority of the contractors in our area use for travel to and from a customer's home. We had over an hour in travel time to and from your home along with about 20 minutes of time checking out the wiring. If the resolution of your situation was resolved by repairing the electrical wiring feeding the machine, please let us know and we will refund the $60 charge. We have a special program and they check the furnace and air conditioner. It is a package deal like a warranty. They have been reliable when we've had them come out and they seem to do their work.

Salesman showed up when the appointment setter said he would. He spent a few minutes looking around then went into the attic to see the old unit and duct work. Salesman tried to sell us a larger unit than we need and wanted to add additional ducts to accommodate the larger unit. It was very hot, since our very old unit had died, and instead of getting to the point with the price he spent at least 15 minutes going over a bunch of stuff that I was sure was meant to justify the huge price that was coming. Then he started breaking down the money. He quoted 2 days for labor, at $1000 a day. If I didn't know it before I knew it then that the price was going to be very high. When he finally got to the final price I couldn't help but laugh. We had the work done by another Carrier dealer that didn't try to sell us more than we needed and they did the job in 7 hours for well over $2000 less than the Woodfin estimate.
Description of Work: Gave an estimate on replacing old central air unit with new heat pump (without the electric backup for very cold weather) in a 1500 sf one story home.

I will investigate the sizing situation but it would be unusual for someone to sell someone a unit too large because that can create problems operationally. We cannot always have the lowest price because it is our goal to always have the best quality. We feel like for what we do and our unique guarantees, we are the less costly alternative because only rich people can really afford to get a cheap installation. I hope that you purchased the Carrier Infinity system because it truly is a wonderful system and you can't beat the warranty. I was recently burned by AHS and a mom and pops HVAC company. I was looking for a quote for very specific work I wanted done (P-Trap installation and cleaning of the outside unit). Seeing the very good ratings and “free estimates” these were the first folks I called. The girl that answered was friendly. I said that I was looking for a price on work I would like done to my system. Her response was, “OK, there is a $95 trip charge to come out”. I then inquired about the “free estimates” she told me that only applied to system replacements. I then said, “you can't give me a cost for specific service over the phone, I have to pay $95? She politely said yes. Needles to say I’m going with the second company I called off off Angie’s list. They gave me a cost over the phone and on top of that I plan on going ahead and entering a service agreement with them. This is assuming I’m happy with their actual service. Sorry, you only get a one shot at a first impression.

Sorry to hear that your are having so much trouble with contractors. Like most of the companies in our industry, we do not quote the cost of repairs over the phone. Every circumstance is different and allowing customer service people to quote a repair does not usually work out well especially when they quote too low. There are several types of P-traps and cleaning of an outside unit can be done very simply with a garden hose or fairly labor extensive when disassembly is required to pressure clean the coils from the inside out. Most HVAC Contractors charge a trip or diagnostic charge to check out the situation and advise the customer of what the exact cost of repair will be. The customer can then decide whether to proceed with the repair or not and the contractor does not waste his time and gasoline quoting small repair jobs. Hopefully the contractor you selected installed a EZ Trap with overflow protection. It may cost a few dollars more, but it is the only way to go especially for installations where overflows can cause damages to the home. There are 3 types of these traps so again, quoting over the phone by a non-technical customer service representative is difficult. I know this explanation probably does not satisfy your complaint, but thanks for giving us a call. We will change the free estimates listing on facebook. Rob Bailey, General Manager

I am very pleased with the work. When it comes to tankless water heater systems these guys are the best. They are not cheap but you get what you pay for. I didn't look for other estimates as I've used Woodfin for other projects and trust them, and they stand behind their work. Two plumbers (Jerry and Keith) did the majority of the work with a third plumber to install the dishwasher, and an electrician to do the electrical work installing the tankless water heater. All the work took 2 1/2 days. Everyone was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. They cleaned-up after themselves, important especially in the crawlspace. My wife and I are both pleased with the work and the results.
Description of Work: Installed tankless water heater, which involved removing the old conventional tank unit, hanging the new unit, re-routing new pipes and removing old ones, installing new exhaust venting through the crawlspace over my garage and capping where the previous tank's exhaust hooked into the furnace chimney, and getting power to the unit. Work in the crawlspace involving the repair of a leaking kitchen sink drain pipe and a leaking supply pipe to my lawn sprinkler system. Replaced and relocated the house's main water cut-off (installed a new quarter-turn valve). This work was incorporated into the plumbing work for the new water heater, resulting in much easier access to the valve. The garage's mop sink was moved from floor to the wall (using a bracket), re-piped and fitted with a new faucet with levered handles. A new dishwasher (purchased elsewhere) was installed using a new stainless steel supply hose and adding a water-hammer arrester for the supply line (something I requested).

Every time I call to get something repaired, they are able to be there the same day. They are thorough, informative, pleasant, and easy to deal with. He has pointed out things that could be fixed and I have trusted him to be honest with me. He has stayed until the job was done completely and correctly. Their receptionist that dispatches technicians is also very good at what she does.
