Michael & Son Services Richmond

We have some minor electrical work we want done. (Unhooking a hot tub, fixing some wiring in the external shed, taking a look at our panel box because we had found the wrong kind of wiring to our hot water heater and wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else wrong). We had an electrician come out for a quote. Pros: Available on weekends. Technician was prompt and courteous. Phone call before arriving was accurate. Cons: Immediately went into scare tactics and told us we were in immediate danger of a fire if we did not switch out the entire electrical panel. He said he wouldn't be able to sleep at night if this were his house. He promised they could do the work that afternoon, and gave us an estimate that seemed really high. We didn't feel comfortable with this, and decided to have other quotes -- and more than one other company assured us that we did NOT need a new box, but if we did want to upgrade at any point, the price would be half of what M&S had quoted. We will never be calling this company again, and if you DO call them, we recommend getting other quotes.

The electrician from Michael and Sons that came out was prompt and professional. However, by the end of the quote we just wanted him to leave our house! He quoted us $3,800 for all of the work we wanted done! Outrageous does not even begin to describe that price! We used another electrician who did all of the work for less than 1/3 of what Michael and Sons quoted us! The electrician we used even suggested that we use motion sensor floodlights in the back instead of switch operated to save money - the electrician from Michael and Sons didn't even suggest that! Michael and Sons did call us after the quote to follow up, they asked us if we would still consider using them if they could do something about the price. We told them no. We refuse to do business with a company that is that outrageously priced to begin with and then offers to adjust once they learn how badly their price was beaten - clearly they cannot be trusted for honesty. Needless to say, Michael and Sons will NEVER, EVER do work in our home.

When I called company on the number on 01/30/14, I was given and emergency appointment and charged for the emergency call except that the technician never called or came at the time they scheduled the appointment. It took 4 calls for me to finally get a satisfactory answer. Although I had scheduled and paid for an emergency service call, after calling 4 times, we finally got the service on the next day. The technician was very thorough and helpful. He found the reason for the problem (roots growing in the pipes) and offered suggestions for following up and finding a way to find the causation for the problem and getting it permanently corrected. He promised to have another technician from the company come out and do further investigation into the problem without additional charge to us.

Very nice- gave me a call 20 min. beforehand. Nice technician and will use the company again.

Work was done without delay and the technician was professional and explained what was needed to be done. Thank you Micheal and Sons.

We live in a very old house. We had trouble with lights going out at different times and different places. The techs worked excellently as a team to locate and correct the problem. We still had 1900's wiring in some parts of the house. The techs display high integrity and professionalism.

Campbell did a terrific job troubleshooting and repairing an electrical problem at my home today. he quickly and expertly determined where the problem was and had everything repaired and cleaned up in no time. Thank goodness for skilled electricians like Campbell. i would highly recommend him and the crew at Michael & sons. We have two whole home agreements with them and it is well worth the money to have the peace of mind.

The estimate was very high and it was the highest from 3 estimated given. I did not choose to go with them.

Everything turned out fine. He found the problem and fixed it. I was pleased with their services.

I would have to say, the man they sent, Glen, was able to figure out what the problem was and the cheapest route. The fact that anyone I have talked to on the phone are pleasant, attentive, and get right to the point. The fact that the system is working since 2005. The service contract is going to be great as well knowing that I can call them without having to worry about when someone is going to be here. They were efficient to try and save me money, which was very great to me.

The Technician Billy Joe, provided excellent services during his visit very informative and professional .

My service man was punctual and very professional. He was even nice to my dogs (German shepherds).

The tech did a pretty good job of checking out our systems. There were no issues with our heating other than they are about 14 years old. He wouldn't cut out the trying to sell me two new ac/heatpump systems though. I mean he went on and on. I tried to explain that we don't have an extra $15,000 lying around and that we would have to get to that in the future. Then some time after he left our home, we noticed he had applied little Michael & Son stickers all over everything he touched. The breaker box, hot water heater, and both heatpumps. Didn't ask permission, just stuck advertising all over the house. We won't have them back.

The service man briefly looked at it and told me I needed a new disposal and new pipes. It was going to be between $1,000 and 1,500 to fix it their way. I declined and got a second opinion. In the meantime, I took a mirror and flashlight to look behind the unit. The pipe was totally disconnected from the unit and that was the problem. My second plumber came and connected it back up for $65. Now the problem is fixed.

I was disappointed in the sales rep. I know he was trying hard to be entertaining, engaging, and friendly, but I was looking for information about installing central air conditioning, not a new best friend. I had estimates from 5 different HVAC companies and at $15K, Michael and Sons was about average. I decided to use another company, though, because I didn't get an impression from the sales rep that he really understood the challenges and solutions to installing the AC. For example, he did not address how and where duct work would be cut, how long the installation would take,etc. I wasn't looking to be educated on a lot of technical issues, but I wanted to feel that he was more interested in the AC job than in sharing family stories. Also, I didn't like having him compute the estimated cost at my home when I'm really busy and don't have time to spare.

After enduring thirty minutes of hearing how dire my situation was and that I needed to proceed with the recommended repairs forthwith, I insisted that before approving a repair of that magnitude, I wanted several estimates and opinions on course of action. Thank goodness I trusted my instincts. A relative suggested I check AngiesList before spending several thousands of dollars on electrical repairs. I am so glad I did. After getting several other opinions and estimates, the original recommended course of action was apparently not the problem at all. I asked for a quote on the the original repair anyway as well as one for the surge protector and learned that I had paid over 100% more and would have paid 120% for the unnecessary repair. Were very prompt and arrived exactly on time. The service person brought in a whole presentation literature and contract for me to sign for a yearly service. I wasn't prepared to pony up the money and sign the contract. I hope the service was done to the unit! I felt like the service call was to get me to sign the contract.

They were very nice and polite. The only complaint I have was that I had it done in the wintertime and I thought they were checking the A/C and they said they couldn't do it because of the temperature and when the weather got warmer, it turned out I did have a problem with the air conditioning. I had insurance on the house and I had them come in and take care of that. They were very professional. They wanted to help out.

We had a home warranty, which this company did the work on. I was out of town and my wife made the calls. The garbage disposal was messed up. I called the home warranty company and they said it was not covered. I thought that they took advantage of her and I am frustrated that they did not honor the home warranty and that we had to pay for the service to be done. Also, I had sent an email and a letter to them asking to honor the warranty and they never even responded.

The initial service was great. Since that time my ac has quit three times. My old heat pump was 15 years old and I never had a problem. I've had nothing but trouble all summer. of course it stops working on the hottest days of the year. They did respond and come out at 2 am and they fixed it. They took care of the problem with the install so hopefully the problem does not continue. Also, every employee that I have come across has been professional, except for one.

They arrived and in order to check system he turned down the temp to 66. He allowed my system to run for app 1.5 hours at that temp. He didn't really find any operational problems But he said my freeon was low, app 2-4 pounds and wanted to charge 125 for first pond then 75 for each additional. When he tried to contact me I was in a meeting and i couldn't be reached, so he didn't chage the system. This was a Friday. However starting that night and all weekend when I ran the system it couldn't cool below 77. So I called them back and when they came out Monday they indicated it was frozen up and he showed me the ice that was still on it. This had not been an issued prior and I can not say for certain but letting this system run at that low of a temp for that long probably caused it to freeze up. Combined with me then trying to get it to cool over the weekend keep exacerbating the problem. I let it sit for a day. I found a local guy to come charge my system for 55 per pound. It has worked fine so far this summer. I know I will have to replace the coil or the system and I am making plans to his in October. You can draw you own conclusions from my experience ...
