Michael & Son Services Richmond

My husband and I are in the middle of a horrific, drawn out experience with Michael and Son. The entire ordeal has been going on for 5 weeks, and began when our boiler died during the extreme cold in mid-February. The replacement job was complicated due to the boiler needing to be relocated, but we went with M&S over another company because they promised the job would only take two days and because we had heard good things about their quality of service. The job started promptly - and then things immediately started to unravel. What started out as a 2 day job turned into a 10 day job (issues remain even 3 weeks later), during which time we were shocked to observe extremely inefficient operations, unexplained delays, insufficient supplies, poor communication between teams and individuals, and a general lack of a sense of urgency. On two separate days, not one worker came to our house. At one point we were told that they were 5 hours late because they had to help an elderly couple who didn?t have heat. Noble, for sure ? but we also hadn?t had heat at that point for 6 days. Another day, they mistakenly installed a combination unit that functioned both as a boiler and a hot water heater ? which wasn?t what we had ordered, wanted and of course didn?t work. Another day wasted. All told, it ended up taking them 8 days to get us heat, during which time we nearly froze. I had to email the owner of the Company just to get their attention so that they would finish the job. Their delays and ineptitude caused all of the pipes under our house to freeze and burst, which dragged things out even further and created a huge mess. Just when we finally thought we were going to see an end to the nightmare, I was contacted by an extremely rude ?Customer Care Representative? named Vance. He was a complete bully who had an excuse for every concern I expressed or complaint that I made. He told me that my expectations had been ?unrealistic? due to the extreme weather, despite it being forecast well before they started the job. It was my fault that this had been such a nightmare, because I hadn?t taken them up on the hotel room they offered (due to our elderly/sick cats and the fact that we thought staying in the house with heaters would prevent the pipes from freezing). My husband and I were to blame because our house was old and didn?t have the proper insulation around the pipes. And so on. This ?Customer Care Representative? actually told me that I should be ?grateful? that Michael and Son didn?t abandon the job when things started to fall apart. I?m sorry? I guess my expectation was that a company as large and ?reputable? as M&S completed all of the jobs they started, especially ones that fell apart due to their own delays and incompetence. When I explained to this nasty guy that I didn?t think we should have to pay the remaining balance on our original contract (which specifically stated that the job would take two days) because I didn?t they had lived up to their side of the agreement, he threatened to charge me for all of the extra pipe replacement work that A.) Was their fault and B.) Several people from the company had already assured me we would not see a charge for. I promised the guy that I would use the internet to tell the public the ugly truth about this Company. He in turn said that he would write a harsh rebuttal listing out all of their excuses and all the ?extra? work they did for me ? so don?t be surprised when that pops up?. By the way, I finally agreed to pay our remaining balance on the original estimate because I needed the nightmare to end. Which I really regret doing, since in the past two weeks we have had ongoing issues with the $12,000 (parts and labor) Bosch boiler they sold us. Believe me - there is nothing quite like spending a lot of money and going through a complete nightmare to have an inferior result. As I type this, I?m waiting for them to ?try? to get a Bosch representative to come out and figure out the issue. The only positive thing about this company is that a few of their individual workers have a strong work ethic and seem very conscientious, sticking with us through the bitter end. I hope that these guys see the light and go work for a company with more integrity. All I can say about Michael and Son is BEWARE. Don't be fooled by the 24/7 plastered on the sides of their trucks - the only thing 24/7 about this company is the woman on the phone who sets up appointments for new business. Bottom line - if you want quality work and great customer service, go with anyone but Michael and Son.

We saw their ad on a billboard going down 95. They did a good job. They were more expensive than other people would charge, if we could find someone cheaper, we would go with that person.

Charged an estimate fee which was not applied to the work. Estimate phase took 5 minutes. Later the fee was a "fuel fee". Expensive, you have been warned.

We called Michael& Sons, solely because they could come immediately, to remove our kitchen sink and drop in a new one. We provided all parts & were charged over $500 for an hour's work w/ absolutely no complications. I thought at the time it was expensive, but had no experience to base my belief on. We called M&S a second time to replace our old dishwasher with one we'd purchased. Again, no complications. This time, we were charged $400. I was surprised at how expensive this seemed & subsequently inquired about the cost w/ several plumbers and the contractor who did our kitchen (who said he'd wished we'd just called him to do the job - he would have been happy to pop by and do it). All five plumbers said Michael & Sons severely overcharged us both times. Also, the seal around the sink has disintegrated and must be replaced, less than two years after it was installed. The management was unsympathetic/unhelpful. Ww won't be calling them again.

First HVAC guy appointment was from 2-6 pm -- he showed at 6:30 pm. Spent two minutes at unit and said you need new unit, no freon, and it will cost 8.000-10,000. He then bummed a cigarette and lighter from my husband. He went to truck for 40 minutes and came back with estimate paperwork (4 choices) with prices 8,000 to 14,000 and talked to us like we were 5 years old. Then he said he would be back in a few minutes. (he turned our heat up to 78 to test something and when left never turned it back down and neither myself or husband knew he did this and we left property after this meeting so when came back next day - our house was an over and heat must have ran all night -- that going to be big bill!!!) He came back 30 minutes later and gave us same paper again with his personal cell number and told us to call him directly not company with payment information - LIKE I GOING TO GIVE HIM MY CREDIT CARD or SOCIAL NUMBER!!!! I called company to complain on Saturday (next day) and they said someone would call me back - never did. I called Monday and after having to tell story to a customer service manager (who would not pass call to HVAC manager) without hearing entire story then put me on hold 10 minutes then hung up on me. THIS IS A JOKE OF A COMPANY

On time, assessed problems, offered solutions, offered products and discounts. Set up next day installation and was on time and efficient.

After finding and reviewing Michael and Son's on Angie's list, I called and scheduled an appointment to inspect an electrical circuital that was not working. The circuit fed a small building that has an internal overhead light and power outlet , which did not work, as well as 4 exterior flood lights which did work. The electrician was available the next day and arrived within the 4 hour window provided. The electrician inspected the situation and recommended not trying to fix the existing circuit rather to install a second circuit (~ $3,300). Having just had similar work done at another house, this price shocked me. I let the electrician know that I was not going to do that for that amount, then he started to negotiate pricing. After some "my manager will allow ne to charge this..." offers, in the end, even for $1,000 less, the work was not worth it. I then asked if we could simply extend the power from the circuit that was working to include the interior light and outlet. He thought about it and offered to do that for less than $300. He made the changes, I paid, and he left. A few hours later, the circuit breaker began to trip for that circuit. After calling M&S, the electrician came back out the next day and attempted to rework. On this visit, he was concerned about the outlet and said in order to fix it, it would be $180 to replace the outlet (another shockingly high amount) and almost $500 to replace the overhead light. I asked him to fix the circuit that he had shorted, which he did, and leave. In the end, I did get a semi-working circuit. The pricing offered for work that I did not accept was so exceptionally high and I will not ask them for any additional services nor will I recommend them to anyone.

GREAT JOB, CAME OUT SAME DAY CALLED, WITHIN 15 MINUTES

It went great! We thought they had accidentally disconnected an electrical line during installation. We called and they came out immediately the next day, no questions asked and no charge. Turned out we had a bad switch not their fault. Also another vendor had turned of our lights at the light fixture instead of using the switch. Everyone we dealt was very professional. I highly recommend this firm.

The Crew (William and Chris) showed up on time and went right to work .... old 30 year old furnace remove and new installed including a new exhaust and filter system in about 6 hours. As a side note I work nights and was sleeping in the bed room right below the attic space where they were doing the work and never woke me up. These guys were fantastic and we would gladly have them back for any future work.

The check up turned out to be more than expected. Raven came about 10:30 and left at 3:30. He would have stayed longer but I had to be somewhere. He was very thorough and explained everything to me. He made a lot of recommendations. Since I had a time crunch, he emailed everything to me as a requested. We set up a follow up appointment to discuss my options. I was so impressed with Raven and want him to come back. I ended up purchasing a Home Care Agreement for the upstairs area. Once the issues with the AC and furnace downstairs are resolved, I will add the downstairs area.

We have had them come out several times to fix things. This company does electric and plumbing. The price is very reasonable. They put booties over their shoes before they walk in your house so they dont get your floor dirty. They are very professional and all around excellent company. As a woman being home alone with a man coming in my house, I feel very comfortable. They are always very pleasant.

They showed up on time and completed a quality job.

They charged a lot of money and I had to get some body else to come and fix what they did not fix. They did some other plumbing work and they did not even charge me for what they were fixing but Micheal and sons charged me for what they did not fix, they came back the second time and did a follow up visit but they could not fix it. They did not provide good service and they and they try to sell you a bunch of stuff on top of that.

Duct work was cleaned and abated of all debris. The plumber was exceptional. None of the technicians overcharged and there is a full satisfaction guarantee. My husband and I were extremely pleased and will call them each and everytime we have plumbing, electrical, a/c, heating, etc. issues.

Dominion responded very quickly, took care of the issue. (One of a pair of lines coming into the house had faulted). Michael and Sons did basically nothing but charged as if they did.

Our A/C was having issues with freezing up so we had them come out and check on our unit. The only good thing about them is they are open 24/7. The guys were nice and on time but they were more interested in replacing my entire A/C unit then fixing the issue. They quoted me 4,100 and I just got another opinion and the other service was able to fix our leak for $190 and add freon. Also Micahel and Sons wanted to charge me $275 for the freon and the other service we used charged $110.

Colt and Josh were punctual and worked from 9 AM to 6 PM with only one short break. They made sure to clean up after themselves. They explained everything they did prior to leaving.

It went fairly well. I received a quote on the services I wanted but I went with another provider as they were better on price and came highly recommended from several friends.

They said they needed to replace the entire water waste line and redo all the drain system. I might have considered having them do the work if they could have unclogged my kitchen sink that day. When I told them I didn't want to wait a week for them to come back, I was told the bathroom sink worked and I could use that. I called another plumber and he came that day and unclogged the drain. He also checked the waste line and found no problems. It cost me $225.

Both the sales technician, Chazz, and the Installation team, Greg and Terry, were top notch. Our HVAC unit needed to be replaced quickly and they were able to exceed our deadline expectations. The three gentlemen were extremely friendly and fun to work with. Having an unexpected and expensive repair is a very stressful situation and Michael and Son technicians made the whole experience a welcome and appreciated relief. It was excellent. They were just top notch. The cost was for a number of things and I thought it was very fair. I would recommend their professional demeanour and their attention to details.

I was not satisfied with it. It was over priced. It took him few minutes to do. I asked him to take care of and the other part of the pipe is leaking and i have not used it yet. They were late.

The guy was very professional and nice. I called back to get them to adjust the temp. and the came back with no problems.

The MIchael & Son rep showed up promptly, as scheduled, after I purchased the Deal. He took care with measuring and estimating the unit size and installation requirements. He explained to me the necessary add-ons ( I knew they were going to be needed, the system was very old and the a/c unit was on the roof). He arranged the crane service, removed and hauled away the old units and put the new one up. All was hooked up and operational by the end of the day. I did get a bit of a sales pitch for the Michael & Son whole house care plan, which I politely declined. We called them back for warranty service about a month later when we couldn't get the heat to kick on, and whatever was wrong, they took care of it right away. Overall I am happy and I think that if you need a new system and a company experienced enough to deal with a tricky installation (on the roof, very old building, overhanging trees, no easy access) then they're worth getting a quote from . The system price itself was good also.
