Great company. Only disappointment was a no-show on the data/time promised to do the work, including no phone call. They did show up the next day and did the work excellently.

My house had my electrical line fall off my house during Hurricane Sandy. I had Michael and Sons come out and do an estimate. The electrician arrived at the appointment time. He gave me 2 estimates. The first estimate was for $1300.00 to replace my SED line. With this estimate, the electrician stated that I could be without electricity for up to 40 days. He could not guarantee that Virginia Power would come out when the work was completed. I stated that I could not be without electricity for 40 days. He then gave me an estimate to replace my circuit box which had been updated in the 90's and the SED line for $3,300.00. He stated that Virginia Power would be out the day they completed the work, because the would need to reconnect my meter. I ended up using another company that did the work for $163.00.

Contacted the vendor in order to arrange an estimate for a whole-house generator. Chose them due to a neighbor's recommendation about the good work they had done for him. I called the toll free number posted - which I found out was apparently not local; after being routed through a switchboard to the appropriate office, I made an appointment for late afternoon - between 3-5 PM of 6 December. I arranged to leave work early (at my expense) to be available for the consultation. Estimator never showed, did not call, nor was there any follow-up from the company whatsoever. A call to the toll-free number after 5PM was greeted with the standard 'call within office hours' message.

The fire department advised us to consult an electriction to see if there was any damage to the wiring in the wall from the fire. The repair person came and cut a small piece from the wall and conducted a test and found the wires were not melted in the wall. He then went on to check all the outlets in the downstairs, which one was faulty. He replaced that outlet, and also instructed us where our next fire may start, and gave advice on that issue. Highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We unfortunately suffered a small house fire, and this is the service that was recommended to check the wires involved in the fire. He was quick and checking the wiring in the walls, and other outlets in the house for safety. We were so impressed with his knowledge, it immediately made us trust him as a contractor. He did some education on some issues and I think that is just as important as fixing the problem. We then put him on as a preventative contractor for our heating and air conditioning. Believe me from our prior experience we have experienced some of the worst. One outfit, the repair person did not fix an item properly with the AC and we suffered water damage in our entire house. So having a quality HVAC person is very important to us.

Be prepared for a higher than the norm estimate, but if you want the job done in a timely manner by very professional techs, it might be worth it to you.
Description of Work: I called to have an estimate done on extending an existing gas line to my new range, as well as hooking up the new kitchen sink/faucet/disposal, a sink/faucet in the powder room and replace a toilet. All products were being supplied by me and the old items had already been removed and disposed of. The tech was timely, professional and took care by putting on booties, etc. I did not hire them simply because the price was quoted at $2135 for the jobs at hand and previous estimates were $600 lower from another company. I was then charged $29.95 for them giving an estimate, which I knew about, but still feel is ridiculous. If they had more reasonable prices, perhaps more people would actually USE them. If I had known their prices were so out of line, I would also not have asked for an estimate to begin with. On the other hand, my "regular" plumbing company has now postponed me from doing the work tomorrow until Nov. 30 and has been nothing but rude with me....I wonder if paying the extra $600 would have been worth it! 10 more days without running water downstairs? Over Thanksgiving. Ugh.

It turned out very good. I found them on Angie's List and when I called them, they returned my call back within five minutes. They set up an appointment for me that day on the phone and he arrived right on time. The man who came was very polite and respectful of my house. He had booties on over his shoes when he walked into my house. He took them off when he went into my garage and then put them back on when he came back into my home. He explained everything and even gave me a brochure if I was interested in any other jobs. I really think they are reliable, do the job well and quick, and someone you wouldn't mind letting into your house.

When they came on a Sunday and fixed out an blown out component of the air compressor, there wasn't a charge because of the contract. They came quickly and promptly as it was a hot day. They also offered to put new thermostats in our heating system, but we had someone else do it as we thought the cost was high. They are terrific and really excellent. When they come in, they put shoe covers on before walking in the door. They are very conscientious and they do clean up after themselves. I would recommend them to anyone with plumbing electrical, or heating needs.

On the day the paperwork for the financing was to be finalized the service technician (Robert Webb) placed a laptop in front of me and requested that I complete the application. I did not know this at the time but Mr. Webb had given me the wrong application to complete. A few days after the installation, I get a letter in the mail from Wells Fargo with a Home Project Credit Card inside. I was under the impression it was necessary to activate the card to begin the billing process, so I called Wells Fargo and activated the account. The following week I get a message on my voice mail from Robert Webb telling me that there was a problem with the financing. Mr. Webb shared that Wells Fargo had approved our application under a Home Project Program and not a Carrier Program. I soon discovered the difference between these two programs was huge. The Home Project Program involved a monthly payment at 24% interest compared to the Carrier Program of zero percent interest for 3 years. I returned Mr. Webb?s phone call and he assured me that a simple phone call should solve the problem and Wells Fargo could change the account over to the Carrier Program. After checking with Wells Fargo I was informed they could not change the account to another account. I called Mr. Webb back and shared with him what Wells Fargo had said. Mr. Webb told me that the finance officer for Michael and Sons would be giving me a call within the hour to clarify things. That phone call never came. At this point Michael and Sons dropped off the planet. In all subsequent phone calls to resolve the problem I was always the one initiating the phone calls. During one conversation the main office told me for a second time that the finance officer would call me back. He never called me back. After a long and patient wait I called the main office again and finally got the financial officer on the phone. He was aware of my situation, but his tone of voice gave me the distinct impression that he was annoyed by my phone call. I could hear him fumble to find the paper work. He told me that Wells Fargo could change the accounts but didn?t want to. To resolve the issue Michael and Sons agreed to send a representative to my house so I could complete a second application for the remaining balance. This was done, but at this point I wasn?t sure if the $6000.00 I paid out was going into a Wells Fargo Home Project account or a Carrier Account. I?m still not sure until the monthly statements start arriving. In addition to the frustration we experienced, I now have a Wells Fargo credit card account that I didn't want and don?t plan to use. I?m not sure how this is going to affect my good credit rating when I cancel the card after 90 days. I had to take an entire day off of work to indulge in the phone calls necessary to resolve the problem. The nature of my job would not have permitted me sufficient time to take care of the things needed to get the financial questions resolved. Michael and Sons needs to improve on customer response and good customer recovery.
Description of Work: First and foremost Michael and Sons provided excellent installation of our Carrier 17 Seer Heat Pump at a cost of $8474. The service technicians of Edgar and Levy Hernandez were superb and came out on a weekend to do the installation. They called before they came and arrivedpromptly. Work began immediately. At all times they were polite and courteous and very respectful. My wife and I appreciated their attention to cleanliness and neatness. During the installation a leak was discovered and they used good troubleshooting skills to find the leak and correct it. Both technicians worked steadily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm without stopping for lunch. They were very dedicated and focused. When the installation was completed they took time to answer all of our questions and educated us on how to use the programmable thermostat. They cleaned up the area in excellent fashion. My wife and I give Edgar and Levy Hernandez an A + for service and installation. We hired Michael and Sons for two reasons: first, because they had great reports on Angie’s List; secondly, because they offered financing for 3 years at zero percent interest with Wells Fargo. We agreed to pay $6000.00 of the $8474.00 and finance the remaining $2474.00 But when it came to financing Michael and Sons was exceptionally incompetent. My wife and I have an excellent credit rating and in my estimation getting the financing correct is equally important as getting the installation and service correct. Michael and Son’s get a F- for financing.

The compressor in my a/c unit died and I got three estimates for a new unit. Went to Angie's List to see which companies had high ratings before making any calls. My first experience with M&S was over the phone to make an appt. The woman kept commenting on other services they provide. At this point I don't care, my a/c is dead. She gives me a 4 hour window of when the tech will be at my house. Not pleased with that timeline but need him to come out. Was VERY pleased when the tech called me earlier in the day to say he had availability now and would I be interested in meeting him at the house. He showed up on time and did an evaluation of the problem. Since my furnace is 21 years old, suggested I may want to replace that too. This was expected as another company also provided an estimate to replace the furnace with a heat pump. We discussed three options: a/c only, a/c and heat pump, and a/c and furnace. The price on the third option was below what I received from another company and in line with a third estimate I got. I asked to have the units put in the next day. The tech came back to write up the contract. The next day the installation guys called to let me know when they would get to the house. They were clean and efficient. Got home to find the new units on and functioning well. Was pleased to see such an improvement in the cooling quality. Got a call from the installation guy about 7 p.m. who said he forgot to light the pilot light on the water heater (gas was turned off for installing the furnace). Said he'd send someone out to light it for me. The man came on time and quickly finished the job.I will use Michael and Son again and recommend them to others. Was very pleased with their service, promptness and prices.

It went fine. It went from my phone call to repair in about two hours. Can't beat that.
Description of Work: They came out within two hours of my reporting my heat pump was not blowing cold air. He instantly found a corroded connection in the outside unit and replaced as part of the $89 diagnostic charge for coming out. He was fast, professional, and followed up with a signed thank-you from the tech. I had used them about six months previous on another failure of that heat pump and they replaced a board, including two trips to my house, for a very reasonable price.

My central air unit stopped sending out cool air, and the fan on the unit stopped working. I called Michael & Son on Thursday morning, and the phone was answered by a very polite and professional young lady. She was very helpful, and offered me several appointment times. I scheduled the visit for the following afternoon, since the unit needed to be off for 24 hours. The next morning they called to see if the technician could come earlier, which suited me better. The technician, Justin, called to tell me when he was 10 minutes out. Once he arrived, he turned on the unit, which of course started sending out cool air! Justin went ahead and did the diagnostic test, and came back with one required part replacement, and one suggested part replacement. He also mentioned their service agreement, but there was no hard sell. Once I signed off with permission to do the work, Justin had the parts on his truck and was able to complete the work within about half an hour. Justin was very polite and very professional, and answered all of my questions without a condescending manner, all of which I really appreciated. The only hiccup in the whole thing is that I mentioned the Angie's List coupon when booking the appointment, and was told to give it to the repairman. I forgot to do that, so I didn't get the discount on the repairs, but that was my fault. I don't know how their prices stack up against others, but I believe that you get what you pay for, and I'm guessing that their prices are fair. I would certainly call Michael & Son again.
Description of Work: The technician performed a diagnostic check on my central air unit. He told me that I needed to have my contactor replaced, and recommended that I have my dual capacitor replaced. I had him replace both parts.

Part of the reason I gave a B for overall experience is due to the customer service rep I spoke to when I first called to schedule work. She was pleasant but took down a totally incorrect phone number for me. When dispatch tried to reach me for my 30 minute warning that the service tech was coming they obviously could not reach me. Unfortunately they did not try to email me despite the fact that they had my correct email address in their system. So, I finally called back in the late afternoon for an update and was told I was not scheduled for service that day. Thankfully the gentleman I spoke with at that time was able to put me back on the schedule and a tech was at my house within an hour. Unfortunately I had rearranged an entire work day to accommodate someone who was unable to take down an accurate phone number or use an existing email address as a contact. This might not have been a huge deal but it was a 100* day, I have small children and the following day was a holiday so we were going to be without AC for at least 3 days. When the service tech arrived our experience went from mediocre to fantastic. He was incredibly professional, laid down mats, put on booties and kept us abreast of his activities. He determined what the problem was quickly and then tried to correct it with minimal cost to my family. Unfortunately that approach could not revive the broken compressor. Due to the extreme heat and the impending holiday he called another rep from work who promptly came and dropped off a window unit so that we could keep 1 room in the house at a safe and liveable temperature. The day following the holiday we were called promptly at 7:30 am to let us know the part we needed was not in stock but had been ordered and would be delivered the following day. The next day we received a call promptly at 7:30 to let us know the part had arrived, been picked up and the tech was on his way to make the repairs. Since the repairs our unit is running flawlessly. We could not be happier with the quality of the repair or the level of customer service we received from the service Tech. We were also happy with the customer service we received after the first issue was discovered. We'd be happy to recommend this business to our friends and will use them again if a situation arises.
Description of Work: A service tech assessed the problem, gave a quote and replaced the compressor in our AC unit.

Overall, this work went smoother and easier than any other service for our ancient Heat Pump unit in the last two years. We had an amazing father/ son team here for the better part of Saturday, it was HOT outside and warming up inside. They worked nonstop, were SO POLITE, explained every step of what was going on and made sure they were not in our way. With a family of five, a kitten and a dog, that was a lot to ask! The house is cool, the new unit is soooo quiet, and my husband is anxious to see the new electric bill for savings. Our new unit came with 10 year warranty - they will fix anything for no charge for 10 YEARS! Amazing! I know some other people have not had a good experience, I think the #1 thing is who your technician is and the first impression you get. NEVER let someone strongarm you into a decision you aren't ready to make. In our case, we knew that our HVAC would have to be replaced when we purchased our home. We will definitely call this company back in the future for some other plumbing and electrical issues!

Our ancient A/C etc. went on the fritz on July 4th! By the time I realized that the house was getting hotter instead of cooler, it was 6 pm. I waited until this morning, July 5th, to call Michael & Sons after finding positive reviews here on Angie's List. Our service call was to be between noon and 4 today, but our tech arrived around 4:30 pm. I understand since it's the day after a holiday and a lot of people have A/C issues when the temperature is so high. Our technician was wonderful: he gave my husband and I the various choices of fixing our old system, including replacing expensive parts, and gave us an estimate on a new system. We knew that we would need to replace this system sooner rather than later, so it was not a big shock. We have ordered a new Carrier system to be installed on Saturday, I will repost how that all goes. They will also be doing a complete rotary duct cleaning at that time.Today, Les put in more freon to keep our A/C going for 48 hours, at no charge since we ordered the new system. He wore the boot covers the whole time, and even brought his own mat to wipe his feet on by the front door! We were able to apply for financing online through Wells Fargo, got an answer and crediit line almost right away. I will post about the install on Saturday, hope it all goes well!

Tried calling Michael & Son several times to complain about my initial service and request my service fee back as I am confident that the technician did not run a legitimate diagnostic on my system. As of right now, I have called 6 times and failed to have anyone call me back.
Description of Work: The fan on my outdoor AC unit stopped working and was thus unable to send any cool air into my home. Based solely on the reveiews from Angie's List, I called Michael & Son to come out and take a look. A technician named Melvin O. came out, took a look at my unit, and reported that my compressor was bad as were several valves. He estimated the cost of the compressor alone to be $1700, and he stated that he did not think it would be worth it to fix the parts. He suggested getting a brand new system. He supllied 3 options: 1) price would be $4,321.00, the 2nd best option: $8,974.00 and the best option would cost: $11,655.00. He said that he could bring over some temporary units to help cool the house and replace the entire system within 24 hours. Because I had the compressor replaced 2 years ago, I told him that I was surprised that it was the compressor. I relayed that I wanted to think about it. I did have to pay him a $89.00 service call fee on the spot for coming out and running a check. I called the HVAC contractor that replaced the compressor 2 years ago, Kenneth Fischer. On the phone, he said that he would be shocked if I needed a new system. He immediately came out to look at my unit. He ran a diagnostic, and found that the extreme heat had simply blown out my capacitor--- a FUSE. He replaced it, had my system working just fine within 30 minutes, and charged me less that $100! He said that these technicians make a commssion if they sell a new system. When you are without AC in 100+ temps, it's easy to sell people anything to get cool again quickly. I waited 5 days before posting this just to see if my system blew again. Happy to report that I remain cool!!!

Initially, I was quoted 7600 to replace 20 feet of sewer main or 5400 to replace 10 feet, but my wife and I did not have the money to have the work done. Then, their fiber optic camera was caught in the line. We negotiated with them, but we still couldn't get their price down to a point that my wife and I were willing to pay for the work. They cut the line and left. I called them a few weeks later to ask about having the fiber optic camera and line removed from the sewer line because it would eventually cause a future obstruction. I called them 4 times over two weeks and was told that I would be called back, but I never received a call. Finally, I called back the last time and spoke with the customer service manager, who get me in touch with the excavation manager. He was going to send out his men to remove the line (free of charge) by yanking it out and leaving the camera in. When the first guy arrived, it was the guy who had run the camera the first time around, and we talked about everything. I finally threw another number at him, so he called the excavation manager back, and we agreed to replace the whole 20 foot line for $4000. They started the work two days later, and the work was completed two days after that. I had some pretty serious frustration when I called them to find out about having their camera removed and never received a call back after 4 calls, but when I finally got through, things all worked out, and we were extremely happy with the work we received for the price we paid.
Description of Work: Michael and Son were called out initially in February due to a clogged sewer main. They snaked the main for $500 and then ran a fiber optic camera through to see what the problem was and to ensure that they had removed the obstruction. What they determined was that the line had tree roots growing in it, and because the line was made of concrete, it would have to be replaced, either in part or in full, to completely remove the obstruction.
