New counter top looks great. The provider was very good at communication and explaining how things work. The new sink they provided was much deeper and we liked it a lot more than the old sink. The old cabinets didn't have proper support so they went to the hardware store to buy some additional items to build up support.

It went well. Working with James River Granite was pretty easy. We had a couple of bumps in the road along the way (to be expected with an older home), but they were responsive and very professional. My counters look lovely!

From the first call I was treated with respect and REALLY listened to, all the way through the day the installers and plumbers were here. Deborah took the extra time to work with me because I had an existing granite island that needed to match the new granite. The three other contractors that I did NOT use just wanted to hurry me to a decision that would have cost hundreds more. I really appreciated that extra effort and I am so pleased with the other solution she helped me with in regards to the tops in the additional bath rooms. Our house feels like a fancy vacation home now.

We wanted granite counters for a kitchen in a rental property we own. Saw the deal on Angie's List for 40 sq. ft. of granite counters for 1,599.00. This was the kind of deal we were looking for. We contacted James River Granite and Marble. We first met with them at their shop. They looked at the drawing of the kitchen and determined that it required a little more than 40 sq. ft.. The total cost was going to be 1,850.00. The increase was fine with us. They scheduled visit at the house to confirm that the estimated square footage was correct. They were late for the visit so we called. There was a family emergency and would have to reschedule. It would have been nice to have gotten a call telling us of the emergency rather than us having to wait and calingl them. The square footage was correct. We went to the stone yard and selected the granite slab. There were several slabs of this granite. Most of the slabs were dark, we selected the one light slab. The kitchen cabinets were installed and James River Granite and Marble cane out to do the final measurements. The installation was scheduled for the following Friday. The workers arrived with the granite to install the counters but one piece was too short. Also, we believe it was the wrong granite (much darker than what we had chosen). They had to return to the shop and cut another counter piece that was the correct length. Also, this piece of granite was not the one we had chosen. We check with the stone yard where we selected the original granite slab. They gave us an inventory number that was different that the number for the granite that was installed. The delay in installing the granite caused us to have the plumber return for another visit (and cost) to install the sink. After the granite counters were installed and everyone left, we noticed a 4 inch crack in the granite by the sink. I feel sure the installers knew of the crack, but did not tell us about it. The owner and the installation supervisor can back and agreed there was a crack and asked whether we wanted it repaired or replace. By this time we just wanted them gone. We chose the repair option. I suppose the old adage of "If it is too good to be true, it probably is" represents how we feel about our experience with James River Granite and Marble.

This turned out extremely well! I’m extremely pleased with the service and product. Everything was as they advertised and then some. They advertised for 40 sq. ft. of granite and gave me more choices of granite. They included a sink, which is something they do routinely. I needed more square footage than what the deal covered but they gave me a great price. I had a lot of interaction with the company. I was able to go look at the granite at the warehouse and they let me pick the exact piece of granite I wanted to use. They were always on time and went out of their way to explain how everything would work out and what they would do. They delivered the product within the time allotted, about 10 days. They were very respectful when they came out to install. It was a very nice experience overall!

First someone came out to go over the kitchen design with me. She was very professional and knowledgeable and helped me pick a sample that I loved! Next another person came out to measure he was also very professional and pleasant, he worked efficiently and was very thorough. It then came time for the install which went very well. I expected it to be inconvenient and it wasn't because the installers who were also very professional and knowledgeable worked with the schedule and were able to get it all done in one day including the sink install. They were very hard working and efficient. It was obvious that they had a great deal of pride in their work because they did a quality job down to the most minute detail. Excellent workmanship and service this company gets an A+. If I ever need granite again I would use them in a heartbeat. Beautiful results!

They were very professional in all aspects of their work from measuring to installation. The countertops are very nice and we are very pleased with the whole process from workmanship to quality of the product. We will use them again for updates to the countertops in our bathrooms.
Description of Work: James River Granite and Marble replaced the countertops in my kitchen with granite. Because of an existing tile backsplash they had to carefully remove the old countertop not damaging any of the tiles since they are not longer available and I did not have any extra. Then they built a frame to raise the new countertop to the level of the tiles.

Deborah was very nice, and worked with us to find the right granite and backsplash to meet our needs. She was willing to go to multiple stores with us on a hunt for the right tile, and provided very good feedback and insight into our decisions. The staff members who installed the granite were also very nice, and did a great job. The backsplash installation was contracted to someone else, and we were very pleased with the hard work and pleasantness of that team. The backsplash team went out of their way to get our kitchen fixed in a timely manner, as there had been a miscommunication with James River Granite about the caulk that was needed to complete the project (this led to a minor delay in getting the kitchen done, but the project overall was completed within a few days). The kitchen looks wonderful now, and we are extremely pleased with the end result. We only occasionally had trouble getting in touch with someone to ask questions or discuss issues, but overall Deborah was responsive and did work with us to address all of our concerns and questions. We would recommend James River Granite, and love the way our kitchen looks! Great job!

I shopped around and got 5 estimates. After speaking with Deborah and getting her very competitive quote, I decided to use James River Granite and Marble. Deborah's knowledge and experience was a huge asset to my kitchen project. She knew what my budget was and didn't try to pressure or upsale me. The granite selection for my price range was adequate and I loved being able to personally choose the slab of granite for my counter . The workers that came out were professional and did a great job. Deborah came by after installation to check in and make sure we were completely satisfied. I highly recommend James River Granite and Marble.

We are on Lake Gaston NC, an hour plus travel time from Richmond or Raleigh so we shopped around in both cities, as well as the local Lowes and Home Depot stores before deciding on James River Granite. It was the right decision. The results are stunning. Our initial phone and e-mail exchanges with Debra to scope the project, confirm we were in their service area, pass sketches and dimensions, and get an estimate were answered promptly and accurately. The job would need 2 full slabs. We decided to proceed further with James River Granite and happened to be making a trip thru Richmond then next day and wanted to look at full slabs, not just samples. Despite the short notice, Debra accommodated our request and met us at their suppliers warehouse. It was a great experience. First, we indicated that we wanted something more complex in pattern (called "movement") than the base price slabs and she guided us thru a huge warehouse, offering sound advice and ideas. We wanted the 129" long x 53" wide island to be made from one slab, which limited our selection. Once we narrowed our choices to two different patterns, she arranged for the local staff to move 2 slabs of each so we could view them side by side. We made our selection then Deborah used our dimensioned sketches and marked off the counter tops with blue tape so that we could see how the stone patterns would appear. It was a great technique. The norm would be for us to have gone back to their fabrication shop before cutting but because of the distance she worked it thru in great detail with us. One suggestion Debra made was on how to get the backsplash cut from the same segment as the counter so that the pattern continued up the wall. Ands he did so in a way to avoid waste and keep it to 2 slabs, not 3. While we waited, she then calculated the final price for the exact fabrication with the requisite cuts for the pattern, sinks, stove, outlet and faucet holes as well as demolition and removal of the existing countertops. They came out to the house within a week to make detailed templates, arriving as planned--no missed appointments. Because of the size of the island and weight of the single piece of granite a crew of six came out for the installation--including Ron, the owner. They were very careful of our home, cabinets and hardwood flooring during demo and installation. Final cuts for the stove were made outside so that the slab would not crack in transit. They ran the shop vac next to the bit while drilling faucet holes to keep the dust down. Very professional. We were especially impressed with the seaming of a 12' run of counter in the midline of the sink. Despite a complex stone pattern with "movement" the selection where to make the cuts and then and final fit and finish of the joint is unnoticeable. When done they painstakingly cleaned up the kitchen and scrubbed and polished the stone. We are very pleased with the outcome, the high quality of material and workmanship, and fully recommend them. This is a small family run business and attention to detail and professionalism is what gets them business, not mass marketing.

James River Granite was a pleasure to work with. Ended up being a little more expensive than I wanted, but I think their prices are competitive. I feel I definitely got what I paid for and the Angie's List deal was a great help. Communication was a bit difficult at time, but we were probably not patient enough. These kinds of projects take time and James River seems to have lots of work, which is a good thing. There were no real problems with the whole project, and I think they would correct them fast if there were. I was particularly impressed with their subs - the plumber took the time to basically re-plumb all the wonky pipes under our sink and install a new disposal in a very tight space. The tile installers were also excellent and were very meticulous. Again, the results were great, and I would hire JR again and have already recommended them to a friend.

We found James River Granite on Angie's list and stopped in at their showroom. Carol showed us around, explained what granite is, different grades, and answered our multitude of questions. She was friendly, professional and during the whole process always willing to help. We chose our countertop and made an appointment for someone to come out to create the template. Less than a week later countertop was installed and beautiful. We had some delays as our kitchen cabinets were not done and James River was very accommodating. The installers were prompt, professional and very neat and clean. They took special care in treating our newly finished wood floors (without me asking) and our granite with special care. I would highly recommend this company...they made this easy!

I bought the Angie's list deal. They contacted me within 2 days. Then came and did measurements the next day. After we choose our granite slab, our granite was installed. From first contact to installation it was 1 1/2 weeks. They did an excellent job and were very professional. We upgraded the edge, had them remove the old counters, and had a little more than the 40 sq ft. They did an amazing job and I would refer them to anyone that asks. The only down side is that I was a little too hopeful for the seam. Previous reviews mentioned they couldn't see the seem. Our seam is very good, but I was hoping for the impossible.

Our aging townhouse underwent a renovation this spring, including a new kitchen and an updated master bath. Funds were tight, and I shopped several vendors in Richmond. I chose JRG because Deborah Graham, one of the owners, understood our financial constraints and worked with us to achieve an elegant look on a tight budget. James River Granite is top notch - professional, punctual, and reliable. My "New Caledonia" tops look pretty awesome on top of white cabinets. Couldn't be happier. Thanks, JRG - Deborah, Ron, Isaiah, Wyl and Jonathan! My husband and I would not only use JRG again; we also recommend them wholeheartedly to Angie's List subscribers!

Worked with Deborah to design the counter tops. She was great resource selecting cabinetry and granite for the family bathroom. We have an L shaped design which she helped us select cabinets to fit the space and where/how to have the counter top cover the cabinets and provide a large space for curling irons, blow dryer and all the accessories. In the kitchen we have 1 large straight section and 2 remote cabinets with granite counter tops. We also have a 4 long raised breakfast bar as well. The counter tops were so well measured and cut, there is less than a paper widths difference between the end of the granite and the end of the wall. lined up perfectly. The installation team arrived on time, worked very hard, were very careful of the new floor in the kitchen and bathrooms, cleaned up afterwards, explained the care needed for the stone, how often to seal, what to look for if it need sealing more often and so forth. We did find one minor issue with the install, and the crew came out the next day and made it right. There was no pressure to pay up front, a deposit yes, but only half and the remainder after the job was complete. We are 100% satisfied with the workmanship and the professional staff was a delight to work with.

Purchased an Angie's List promo deal for Kitchen counter tops. An associate responded immediately once I had purchased the promo deal. Scheduled an initial product review and installation within two weeks of the product review. The installation took place on May 30, 2014. The technicians to do the install arrive within the agreed time frame and removed the old counter top and installed the new counter top without incident. Was pleased with the installation and color choice. The technicians gave me good instructions after the installation took place. After they left I discovered that they had left debris in my driveway and on my lawn. This included a leftover 1 x 3 inch piece of cut stone from the counter top install. I was not pleased with this discovery because had it not been discovered and I had mowed the lawn, potential damage to my lawn mower and myself were possible. I have since contacted James River Granite and Marble concerning the leftover debris. Otherwise, I have been pleased with the installation.

First person came by & measured countertops, explained procedure, and showed me choices of countertops for this special (very limited selection). I made my selection, and an appointment for the following Friday for a template measurement. Next person I had to call, as there was some confusion as to who was coming to do the template. One thought the other was coming, so I called the office after waiting 30 minutes past the appointment time. He arrived & apologized...no big deal. These things happen. He was measuring for the template, and told me that the old stove would have to be removed for him to measure properly. My only free days are Friday, so I really didn't want to wait another week. If the first person had mentioned this, I would have had the oven removed! He didn't know how to take it out (it was a very old drop-in oven), so he said he'd come back the next Friday. As soon as he left, I attacked the old oven, took out every screw I could find, and dragged it out in pieces to my SUV. I called him back and asked him to come back, which I am happy to say he did. So, template was done that day. The install was done the next Friday, and the guys did a great job. Everything went very smoothly, and they cleaned up nice, plus took away the old countertop. I was, and still am very happy with the new granite countertop. No issues, problems or complaints. So, besides a couple of miscommunications, I would recommend and use this company again.
